Chelsea squad self-isolate as Hudson-Odoi tests positive for coronavirus

The spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) throughout Premier League personnel increased in the early hours of Friday morning, with Chelsea the latest club to be hit.

The Blues announced via a statement on their website that Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.3m) had tested positive for the virus and that their training facility would undergo a partial closure.

Crucially, in line with government health guidelines, Chelsea personnel who had recent close contact with Hudson-Odoi, which includes the full first-team squad, will now also enter into a period of self-isolation.

“Chelsea men’s team player Callum Hudson-Odoi had a positive test result for Coronavirus returned this evening. Chelsea personnel who had recent close contact with the player in the men’s team building will now self-isolate in line with Government health guidelines. These will include initially the full men’s team squad, coaching staff and a number of backroom staff.” – Chelsea statement

Hudson-Odoi becomes the first Premier League player to be announced as having contracted COVID-19 but the virus had already hit Arsenal late on Thursday.

The Gunners announced that manager Mikel Arteta had tested positive for COVID-19 and that their full senior squad would also self-isolate.

Shortly after, Brighton confirmed that their Gameweek 30 meeting with Arsenal was postponed.

No announcement has been made about Chelsea’s scheduled fixture with Aston Villa, although this is expected to be postponed as well.

The football community now awaits the results of an emergency Premier League meeting on Friday morning.

The league had officially stated on Thursday evening that all matches would go ahead as planned this weekend, although this was less than an hour before the Arteta news broke.

In response to that, the Premier League’s hand was clearly forced and an emergency meeting scheduled.

What to do if you think you might have coronavirus*

If you think you might have coronavirus or you’ve been in close contact with someone who has it:

  • stay at home and avoid close contact with other people
  • do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital
  • use the NHS 111 online coronavirus service to find out what to do next

The 111 coronavirus service will tell you if you need to continue to stay at home (self-isolate) or if you need medical help.

    The Guardian

That Premier League meeting, thought to be a video-conference call between all 20 clubs, is set to have significant implications on the landscape of the coming weeks and beyond. Eddie Howe is an early bird but Bournemouth have understandably delayed his press conference as they await further guidance from the league, pushing back his 9am press call until 1.30pm GMT. Steve Bruce, it says, here, is set to defy logic and speak at around 9.30am this morning.

Even if they let them play enough games till they win and then call it off, there would always be an asterisk by this season.
Better to suspend the whole thing for a few weeks and then carry on to the end.

Well for that you'll have to understand how China operates... its an entirely different (and vast) topic of discussion and dont think FFS is the right forum to have it at.

I’ve seen that article. Yes they did not spread the message across quickly enough. A lot more people having it than is being mentioned.

But I’m also not some idiot who thinks all Chinese eat bats and rats. Chinese people are more hygienic than the English here. They’ve cracked down on it there. The virus does not seem to be transmitting much in Africa/South America. Maybe when the summer comes here, there will be a lot less of it.

I agree that not all Chinese eat bats and rats. Its not about them but rather controlling the flow of "correct" information. That's the only thing. BTW, the Indian Medical Association has said there is no correlation between the spread of disease and temperature and its when its almost summer time in India. So not sure how that will pan out for Africa/Latin A.

This. Also, if heat would kill the virus, then our bodies are normally hotter than the usual summer temperatures already. If temperatures of mid-30's can not kill it, I don't think the British summer will. At this point when the scientific community doesn't know much about the virus, I think it isn't too fruitful for us to debate 😀

I am in Japan and I don't understand what you mean by look at the cases there and 'so close to China'? It is an island and sharing borders doesn't mean much if there is so much of air travel involved in this day and age. Influenza is serious here every year and almost all Japanese take preventive measures for that which happens to be the same for Covid-19. Masks, sanitizers etc are commonly used and people are 'more hygienic'. I don't think you can just say if a neighboring country Japan doesn't have large scale spread it isn't much dangerous. But I agree that the mortality rate looks similar and China this time around may not have lied too much.

It is impossible for any one to really know but from what we are hearing if it peaks in May or June , it stlll needs time for its decline to a level where it is 'safe'. Budweiser? Coors?

Sam Adams gets a pass I suppose.

Budweiser I guess. And now I have to excuse my English. There is joke that I find difficult to phrase: "Budweiser is the most consistent beer of the world. The taste is same when it enters your body and when it exits".

              Nice. How about this one?

The CEOS of Budweiser, Miller, Heineken and Guinness sit down for a meal... The waitress comes by for a drink order, and each orders their own.
Budweiser CEO: “I’ll have a Bud”
              Miller: “Miller Lite for me”
              Heineken: “I’ll have a Heineken”
              Guinness: “Coke”
              Everyone stares.
Guinness replies: “What? If you aren’t drinking beer, neither am I!”

Watford cancelled training on Thursday because several members of the first-team squad felt unwell, with one player awaiting results of a test following symptoms associated with coronavirus, Nigel Pearson has confirmed. “We are talking about sport versus the well-being of people here,” Pearson said on Friday morning. “We are trying to be proactive and hopefully the Premier League will make a strong decision based on what is good for everybody.”

Loads of people don't think coronavirus is serious.

That footballers are now getting tested positive is making those people think again.

How can they wait this long for an announcement? This is a matter of public health and safety for millions of people around the globe. It is impossible for the games to go ahead, absolutely impossible. If the FA don't take that decision, the government should impose the suspension of all sports related activities in the country.

That's the problem, the Government haven't made the decision to cancel, it shouldnt be a private entity making this decision.

Guess it all comes down to money, imagine insurance is different if it's Govt forced..

That is not the question to worry atm. If footballers are this sick, so is the public. You will have serious crisis probably next week there.

There was a report yesterday that Premier League regulations only void a season once a suspension has run for 65 days. Given that there are exactly 65 days to the last Sunday of the season the clubs facing relegation have a strong motivation to argue for suspension from today on the grounds that if no further games took place there could be no legal argument as to whether relegation should be imposed.

Newcastle’s manager, Steve Bruce, says the Premier League should shutdown until “the situation is clearer”. Newcastle are due to play Sheffield United at 3pm GMT on Saturday and Bruce says none of his players nor staff have shown symptoms of coronavirus. “Touch wood. The doctor has been in contact with the other doctors [in the Premier League] I believe and we’re awaiting this phone call [about tomorrow’s game]. We’ve prepared for the game and people talk about it being behind closed doors but if we play it’s for one thing – the supporters.”

I don't think you can blame one country. This is a global problem in a global society. There's no absolute certainty it originated in China yet. It could have been doing the rounds anywhere before finally being identified for what it is.
