Plans for remainder of FPL season to be decided on Thursday

The future of the 2019/20 Premier League season is set to be reviewed at another emergency meeting next week.

The top division of England’s football pyramid, as well as all EFL leagues, has been suspended until April 4 in light of the recent outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the United Kingdom.

The Premier League postponed all matches from Gameweeks 30 and 31 on Friday and explained that there would be further decisions made about the rest of the campaign in due course.

Thursday, March 19, has been pencilled in for their next emergency meeting on the subject, so Fantasy Premier League managers may want to stay tuned for further updates then.

However, there are a number of other key dates for our diaries before then.

Tuesday will see UEFA host a video conference with all 55 national federations under its jurisdiction to decide the future of the Champions League, Europa League and, crucially Euro 2020.

The fate of this summer’s major international tournament is expected to hold the key to what options Europe’s top leagues will have when attempting to complete the 2019/20 season.

Fantasy managers should also pay close attention to any updates coming from UK prime minister Boris Johnson in the coming days.

It was reported on Saturday morning that the British government are contemplating a u-turn on their decision not to ban mass gatherings, such as sporting fixtures.

If such legislation does come into force in the coming days, it could well extend beyond the Premier League’s current return-date of April 4, although, at this stage, we do not know what the government’s exact plans will be.

Furthermore, England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty claimed that the peak of COVID-19 outbreak in the UK is likely to occur in May and June.

Meanwhile, another FPL name was added to the list of those that had tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, this time Wolves forward Patrick Cutrone (£5.5m), currently on loan at Italian side Fiorentina.

That news came on a surreal day for Fantasy managers and football fans worldwide, as we were left with no matches to watch other than non-league fixtures.

Southampton made light of the situation on their official club Twitter, attempting to play a game of noughts and crosses with Gameweek 30 opponent Norwich City.

The Canaries’ media team were conspicuous by their absence but Manchester City dropped by to accept Southampton’s invitation of a competitive match.

Naturally, the two sides drew their inaugural noughts and crosses bout.

Elsewhere, Saturday was a day for the executive members of football clubs in the Premier League to have their say.

Brighton chief executive Paul Barber was one of those, who expressed his concern over when the Premier League could resume.

“We’ve got several teams in self-isolation, which makes it difficult to think about that date. Those players have not just got to self-isolate for 14 days, they’ve got to get themselves close to match fitness again, which could take another seven to 14 days. So we’ve got a number of complexities here, which go way beyond thinking of the finances.” – Paul Barber

Meanwhile, West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady caused some controversy as she made early claims that the 2019/20 Premier League season would have to be declared null and void.

“There is no dodging the possibility that all levels in the EFL, as well as the Premier League, will have to be cancelled and this season declared null and void because if the players can’t play the games can’t go ahead.” – Karren Brady

Also, Wolves chairman Jeff Shi has called on supporters to do everything they can to stop the spread of COVID-19.

“I appeal to our supporters to follow our lead, and to stay as safe as possible during what will no doubt be a very testing time. Please don’t underestimate the threat of this virus, to you or those around you, and employ best practice to limit the spread, including good hygiene and proper social distancing, which are both key.” – Jeff Shi

In better news, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who was the first Premier League figure to contract COVID-19, has revealed that he is doing much better.

“Thanks for your words and support. We’re all facing a huge and unprecedented challenge. Everyone’s health is all that matters right now. Protect each other by following the guidelines. We’ll come through this together.” – Mikel Arteta

This. I don't know when but Leagues season should be finished before next campus starts.

And if the next season is just League only to shorten (no cups, no European competition, then so be it,.)

All of Europe/Worldwide contracts would have to have some sort of waiver policy to take into effect many contracts end dates aren't where the season now ends.

Players who agreed move before windows open will be post poned. Good will gestures will have to be made.

I think contracts typically end on July 31st.
I think if the season can’t be finished before then, it could be voided.
I expect they’ll cancel the CL and EL this season - too many games and travel obviously. Also we’re not that advanced into those competitions so no clear loser in that scenario (like Liverpool would be).

I think they’ll try 2 games a week, for 5 weeks, to get the domestic leagues done.

Mid June to end of July.

Its obviously an easier option to cancel the European games, but if it safe to play the league, the fact there is travel involved shouldn't come into it, unless there is some scenario where it's safe in england, and not in europe.
For el there are 6 rounds left, suppose a fair few, but as a supporter of united, I'd sooner see that continue, rather than the league!
I know the league has to finish, but at the cost of the other cups, I dunno.

I just don’t think it’ll be feasible to squeeze in all the league and cup games in what will be a very short period of time. Sadly the cup competitions would make more sense to cancel at this stage.
As I say, travel between Europe won’t be encouraged this spring/summer for sure.

I'm of the opinion to complete the season whenever the football can be played, be it July or later in the year and then alter plans for next season by tweaking/removing the domestic cups for a year.

You can't play 30 games of a season then throw it as null and void. Loads are saying but let's be honest, most have that opinion because of how their team is performing / don't want Liverpool to win the title, Leeds to get promoted etc.

Just add the points gained this season to a full season next season. Then teams fighting for promotion are not penalised and teams in the relegation places are not favoured. I appreciate that some may have played the top teams twice but you cant please everybody.
I'm speaking as a Leeds United fan but I think it would be unfair to deny liverpool a deserved title. I appreciate that clubs will have different contracted players next season but again, cant please everybody.

I wonder if the league accept Leeds and West Brom into a 22 team league and use the relevant corresponding games (9 or so for each team) in 2020/2021 to count towards final positions in the 2019/2020 season. This would allow Liverpool to win the league without jeopardising health etc.

And what about Fulham and even Brentford? They could reach automatic promotion spots if the games were played on.

I agree with this but flowing through the football pyramid. Then for the next 2 years you increase the amount of teams relegated each year before we get back to the previous numbers.

If this virus persists, it may be necessary to reduce the amount of games played. I'd like the Premiership to have less rubbish in it to be honest.

Isn't the truth this season that none of the teams are bad, Norwich being the "best worst team" historically and one that would unlikely be bottom of any other league globally?

Think they just finish this season when they can before next season starts. If that means August next year, and next season start is delayed and/or cups are cancelled so be it. At least for those subsequent competitions some agreement can be made up front such as reduced games or whatever.

Players could still become infected before a possible gameweek. Hopefully not but not having it today is no guarantee you can't become infected or even have to go into self isolation because you've flu-like symptoms.

Here are my thoughts, this season will be completed behind closed doors before end of May to avoid the peak of the outbreak in May and June.

Football will kick off again at a later stage next season with the length of the season being reduced. Cups to be cancelled.

We possibly could have no CL or Europa next season due to traveling being a volitile situation.

    Just my take on it.

Close to zero chance of early behind closed doors footy imo. The BL tried this after all. More chance of country lockdown around May.

Cynic in me says too much money involved for a cancellation.
TV money would need to be repaid (domestic and international), no prize money (this comes mainly from TV income as well) . Figures this morning put that around a billion pounds.
TV companies will want games or else people will be cancelling subscriptions.

I’ve already cancelled my rolling monthly subscription.

I noticed F1 had been heavily pushing a deal to sign up early to the F1 full season. Something like £150 up front for the full season, just before the opening weekend was cancelled.

TV companies are to blame for the financial imbalance in the game. If a few of them do fail and clubs revenues drop they will just have to cut their cloth to fit. Players will have to settle for a measly £50,000 a week

There’s a big difference between posting on FFS and analysing transfers using the RMT tool.

If you can’t see the difference then I can’t help you lol

@ FANTASY GOLD. Neck wound in. Thank you for pointing out the differences and finer workings of what constitutes a higher and lower level of involvement in FPL activity.

Your esteemed help is much appreciated. I wont be able to see any more replies in this thread as I'm taking your advice and logging-off now. I've got a ton of East Enders episodes to re-watch.

Maybe I am in a minority of one on this but Sport is irrelevant in times like this and FPL is just a silly fantasy game.

If we don’t get any sport of any kind for the next 4 months it would not bother me in the slightest. People’s health is the priority and the government will need to step up to support those businesses who need it most.

Your probably part of the majority.
People’s health is far more important than any sport or entertainment.

However we can still talk about outcomes, sport etc. We can’t just crawl under a rock and do or talk about nothing while this horrible situation goes on.

      Most will agree with you.
The thing is, when people post something about FPL/football here & get shot down is funny.

I mean, we all know we're in danger. No need to repeat that all the time. It's literally everything we see is related to covid.

Deep down, when it comes to the risk part everyone will know what is the right thing to do. (Hopefully 🙂 )

At this rate, they will see a massive failed Olympics even if they organise it. I agree it will be telivised but the whole economic investment a host does takes into consideration of incoming foreign crowd which gives ££ to the host nation.

I don't see Many people going ahead with the plan now & visit a fairly populated country (international airports are the most dangerous places i guess)

I think they have to make the final decision before May because they have to start the preparations so they could still decide against it yet over the next month.

It is definatly a money thing not sure if they can postpone the Olympics or whether they cancel it completey. Like you say though if they are not selling tickets it could be a total disaster for them money wise.

In the grand scheme of things of course sport is far less important than health and the well being of society but sport is an escape for many of us and a form of relief from many of life's stresses, worries and pain. Those with families and kids may find it easier to stay distracted but those who aren't as fortunate will find the next few months harder than they already will be.

P.S If you pin any hope on the government to support anyone in any reasonable manner let alone small businesses, I think you're going to be left disappointed. We're about to see the true colours of Boris and the Tories, if we haven't (or chose to ignore) already.

There has to be a balance. We can't just say we can live without sport for X months. There will be 10's of thousands of people that will be made redundant as a direct result of no sport and thousands of business will fold due to lost revenues, which will bring a huge recession and almost everyone will suffer financially - so it will bother a lot of people in many ways.

There will be new cases for months to come so if there is a global shut down when there are only 150k officially diagnosed, what is going to happen when that figures reaches millions? Under current protocol of 2 week self-isolation when you have been in contact with someone we will never start so 🙁

    Forgive my ignorance lads
but I am completely confuzzled as to why FPL scored this week as a regular week rather than freezing all leagues and scoring , i dont see a reason at all for them punishing managers that took a hit , used a chip or jsut plain made a transfer , ft or not.
It is probably not going to be reversed but is shameful nevertheless that they did not freeze the game until further notice.
Thankfully i didnt use any chips but did do a hit and lost in my head to head league purely based on that hit

    how has everyone else faired?

    1. Fred54
      • 9 Years
      4 years, 14 days ago

Probably freeze it after GW32 deadline passes. Think they were buying time/seeing what the real Premier Leagues doing.

I except the Premier League to say that football will be suspended indefinitely after their meeting next week, no return on 4th April.

      Relax mate.
      Shameful is an overreaction IMO.

They took a stance & i don't see much wrong in it. Even if the deadline postponed the guys with early hits would have been punished IF the games starts somehow in the future.

The way i see it within short period of time they took a fair call. I really think they'll postpone the GW 32 deadline now till when we get some football action

      1. OleGGMU
        • 5 Years
        4 years, 14 days ago

With the uncertainty of will they or wont they play i can cut em some slack, i agree that a hit will impact you but i still dont get the logic of scoring the gw and updating leagues , rank etc. Keep the gw active so transfers are locked in , teams are locked in and let everyone await the fixtures to arrive rather than scoring it without any fixtures .
Shameful is worthy given viable and non conflict causing resolutions that couldve been utilized , especially with it being announced in advance of the deadline that matches and the pl were suspended till 3 april.
To score it means gw 30 was an active gw yet it was not
Active gws have actual matches played, think of say world no1 losing to no2 due to a early hit for gw 30 and the league being canceled , now he/she has lost the fpl win due purely to a hit and the gw not being frozen unless they just void eveything entirely.

Ah well what's done is done and cannot be undone seemingly so moving on , hope all you lads are safe and healthy, football manager is a good comfort wiv no footie on now, ease the pain away in a fake universe haha

Early hits have always been risky. Is it shameful that they don't reverse early hits for players who turn out to have their games postponed due to the weather? If they intervene in this situation, would that justify interventions in slightly less serious situations in the future? Taking a hands-off approach is the best way to ensure consistency.

That's a worry for clubs, the biggest worry for PL is parachute payments and the money in the game etc. which will probably at the forefront of their decision. It's why I believe they will complete this season before starting the next one.

It won’f be possible to play matches before end of June and teams will lose some of their players and obviously can’t play new signings in the remaining games so realistically I don’t see any chance of rest of the season being played.

The possibilities are either to declare current standings final or declare the season void. Of course both are controversial but one of the two will have to be chosen.

For next season, what things would you like to see changed in FPL to spice up the game?

Remove captaincy and chips, keep 2xWC

Would love to see live subs being intoduced.

I would also only like to see 1 WC for the season. Only being able to be made active from the winter transfer window.

        Agree re captaincy being removed.

Captaincy and chips gone. One wildcard and being able to roll as many FTs as you like.

One wildcard to be used at any time, no other chips.

I'm definitely gunna go against the grain here...

I'd like to see chips doubled like the WC is - with one set of chips to be used before January, and one set for after.

Because, I actually quite like having chips. It makes the game a bit more interesting as it brings in more points. But, the BGW's and DGW's dominate usage of the chips.

It would be really good to see how they got used pre-January if my idea was adopted

      Extra points for braces.

      Pen saves bonuses reduced

      One WC

Choice of either BB or TC

The story of Ronaldo opening up his hotels as hospitals is fake. It's silly to think how many people believe things and retweet them irresponsibly without looking into it.

I opened up my apartment to the infected to build up our herd immunity and then we are going to live a nomadic life in the fields.

The decision whether to restart or not isn’t even within the football authorities jurisdiction anymore.....that moment has passed. It’s totally inconceivable that they would, or could, announce a resumption autonomously.

I fully expect that football will cede authority to the government this week....because they’ve already taken it anyway in practise.

..,”We will take advice from the government...blah blah...cooperate...blah, blah....at an appropriate time...blah, blah blah,....future date...await further instruction...blah, blah...”

That’ll be the thrust of it.

Chris Wilder interview 30 mins in. Before that former-Leeds and Ireland legend Johnny Giles does his weekly football show. Fairly nostalgic at times but still a good judge of a footballer. Also infamously known as the man who KO'd KK in the '74 Charity Shield!

I took annual leave for 10 days, if things really kick off, I may get to stay in the boonies.

I work for the Government and there's no need for us to come in to work but they can't let us work from home because that would be hypocritical considering they haven't advised it for the wider public let alone their own staff.

My company didn’t implement a working from home policy either and I’m not against the decision, this will go on for months and a lot of people don’t end up getting any work done from home.

When the new season starts do you think Liverpool will win their first Premier League title or will the others put up a better fight this time?

I see what you did there and I would be mad if it wasn't you who posted this.

Fek off back to the championship 😉

Re live subs as a feature, will be difficult for some to make use of this feature due to different time zones.

Perfect solution, start of each FPL season you are given a choice of autosub or live subs and that decision cannot be changed.

Will change the dynamic of the game completely 🙂
