Plans for remainder of FPL season to be decided on Thursday

The future of the 2019/20 Premier League season is set to be reviewed at another emergency meeting next week.

The top division of England’s football pyramid, as well as all EFL leagues, has been suspended until April 4 in light of the recent outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the United Kingdom.

The Premier League postponed all matches from Gameweeks 30 and 31 on Friday and explained that there would be further decisions made about the rest of the campaign in due course.

Thursday, March 19, has been pencilled in for their next emergency meeting on the subject, so Fantasy Premier League managers may want to stay tuned for further updates then.

However, there are a number of other key dates for our diaries before then.

Tuesday will see UEFA host a video conference with all 55 national federations under its jurisdiction to decide the future of the Champions League, Europa League and, crucially Euro 2020.

The fate of this summer’s major international tournament is expected to hold the key to what options Europe’s top leagues will have when attempting to complete the 2019/20 season.

Fantasy managers should also pay close attention to any updates coming from UK prime minister Boris Johnson in the coming days.

It was reported on Saturday morning that the British government are contemplating a u-turn on their decision not to ban mass gatherings, such as sporting fixtures.

If such legislation does come into force in the coming days, it could well extend beyond the Premier League’s current return-date of April 4, although, at this stage, we do not know what the government’s exact plans will be.

Furthermore, England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty claimed that the peak of COVID-19 outbreak in the UK is likely to occur in May and June.

Meanwhile, another FPL name was added to the list of those that had tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, this time Wolves forward Patrick Cutrone (£5.5m), currently on loan at Italian side Fiorentina.

That news came on a surreal day for Fantasy managers and football fans worldwide, as we were left with no matches to watch other than non-league fixtures.

Southampton made light of the situation on their official club Twitter, attempting to play a game of noughts and crosses with Gameweek 30 opponent Norwich City.

The Canaries’ media team were conspicuous by their absence but Manchester City dropped by to accept Southampton’s invitation of a competitive match.

Naturally, the two sides drew their inaugural noughts and crosses bout.

Elsewhere, Saturday was a day for the executive members of football clubs in the Premier League to have their say.

Brighton chief executive Paul Barber was one of those, who expressed his concern over when the Premier League could resume.

“We’ve got several teams in self-isolation, which makes it difficult to think about that date. Those players have not just got to self-isolate for 14 days, they’ve got to get themselves close to match fitness again, which could take another seven to 14 days. So we’ve got a number of complexities here, which go way beyond thinking of the finances.” – Paul Barber

Meanwhile, West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady caused some controversy as she made early claims that the 2019/20 Premier League season would have to be declared null and void.

“There is no dodging the possibility that all levels in the EFL, as well as the Premier League, will have to be cancelled and this season declared null and void because if the players can’t play the games can’t go ahead.” – Karren Brady

Also, Wolves chairman Jeff Shi has called on supporters to do everything they can to stop the spread of COVID-19.

“I appeal to our supporters to follow our lead, and to stay as safe as possible during what will no doubt be a very testing time. Please don’t underestimate the threat of this virus, to you or those around you, and employ best practice to limit the spread, including good hygiene and proper social distancing, which are both key.” – Jeff Shi

In better news, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who was the first Premier League figure to contract COVID-19, has revealed that he is doing much better.

“Thanks for your words and support. We’re all facing a huge and unprecedented challenge. Everyone’s health is all that matters right now. Protect each other by following the guidelines. We’ll come through this together.” – Mikel Arteta

Karen Brady has said nothing wong. If the PL and EFL matches can't be finished the season is void. She's not asking for the season to be stopped, just that if it has to be cancelled than you can't start making up new rules.
and start awarding titles and promotions when all the matches have not been played, not to mention the amount of Litigation that will be involved..

Suggesting she's doing it for self interest doesn't make sense as all the alternatives being pushed by other parties would also see West Ham safe.

It really isn’t football’s decision now....that moment has passed. I’m fully expecting it to be nullified and no, or little, consideration about when it resumes.

To make it easier...and as we are absorbed in the game of English football as fans...consider this...

How much thought do you think is going on in Italy right now about how they finish their league off...and who do you think will decide when any football resumes.

Once we’ve considered that then we have an understanding of exactly where football, in this country, stands in respect of resuming the PL....Nowhere...This season is over.

When one plays out the different scenarios with the path we are on now then the logical conclusion to come to is this season will be declared null and void.

It is tough for lots of clubs, players and fans but we must pull together now and think of the greater good.

At the very best I think the league could start afresh again in August 2020 but I would not be surprised if it did not resume again until August 2021.

Here's a fun hobby to start while you're self-isolating. I'm brewing a barley wine today, and I have another Smart Keg almost ready to serve me some fresh, fresh IPA (Drop it like it's hop!). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toeCY2bIrkY&t=1s

A few of my mates are into brewing ale but their setups don’t look as fancy as that bit of kit while at the same time producing a very good ale.

I have been thinking of making a poitin still for a while now and with the pubs already starting to close their doors where I am from my hand might be forced.I will probably go for a few in the locals that still open tonight as I reckon this will be my last chance for some time unfortunately.

Watch this video of the way we have been doing it for thousands of years.Pity I can not find the full doc But you will get an idea all the same.

If the seriousness of the virus will reach its peak in May and June then they really ought to try and cram the remainder of the league games in before then to get the league finished. So having this postponement in place until 4th April is not helping matters.

I remember when I was a nerdy type as a student discussing which Sci fi film was the most accurate representation of our future.
I picked Mad Max back then, with the lesser known 'Idiocracy' close behind. Not a bad call I think - but any takers given the mental state of things 🙂

Amongst all the people on here who know exactly how to complete the football season, and fix coronavirus, I have an fpl question.

With no knowledge of order of fixtures, what would your ideal team be for the remainder of the season?

      City: Ederson, KDB
      Pool: TAA, Salah
      Wolves: Saïss, Jimmy
      Utd: Bruno, Martial,
      Everton: DCL
      Leicester: Vardy

Then pick another Def & a bench with whatever’s left over

As long as CL isn't cancelled, I'd avoid City almost entirely, and likely only 1 Liverpool as I'd expect rotation with nothing to play for after the title is assured. 4-3-3 has worked well for me lately, so I'd probably stick with it.

      Something like:

      Pope (Hendo)
      TAA Doherty Alonso Maguire (Saiss)
      Fernandes Martial Son (Barnes Foden)
      Vardy Jimenez DCL

I wonder if there will be something built into FM2021 to generate a pandemic based off of this season.

I remember having Robbie Keane serve a global football ban for assaulting a referee in a preseason friendly against then-lower-league Bournemouth when i was about 7 or 8 seasons into dominating Europe with Wigan back in Champ Manager 3.

Had signed Keane from Wolves as a teenager, and he'd gone on to become the worlds best player. I'll never forget being that flash up on the screen, must have been the smallest chance as i never ever saw it happen again, but it was there in the code. Amazing.

I hope not as things are bad enough without being able to play games for a bit of escapism.

Robbie of all people doing that is a surprise.I think he was hardly never booked during his career and the one red card he got was a mistake by the ref.A gentleman if there ever was one.I would not mind if it was Roy but Robbie.

I thought so too, fortunately, i was able to press and hold the power button and pick up from a few matches earlier in preseason 😆

also, as much as I agree about Robbie, he did flip at the end of his career in real life

Just read on FB that rubbing an onion on ya junk can cure you from Covid-19.

Anyone know if this is true? I have two onions in my freezer.

Deep heat is best but if you can't get any an onion should do fine

Make sure you shave your pubes first though, nobody wants their pubes smelling of onions.

not sure of the medical benefit on offer here but i can attest to the human body internal temperature being optimal for defrosting your frozen vegetables.

Done a few parsnips and carrots, but still building up to the marrow.
