Plans for remainder of FPL season to be decided on Thursday

The future of the 2019/20 Premier League season is set to be reviewed at another emergency meeting next week.

The top division of England’s football pyramid, as well as all EFL leagues, has been suspended until April 4 in light of the recent outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the United Kingdom.

The Premier League postponed all matches from Gameweeks 30 and 31 on Friday and explained that there would be further decisions made about the rest of the campaign in due course.

Thursday, March 19, has been pencilled in for their next emergency meeting on the subject, so Fantasy Premier League managers may want to stay tuned for further updates then.

However, there are a number of other key dates for our diaries before then.

Tuesday will see UEFA host a video conference with all 55 national federations under its jurisdiction to decide the future of the Champions League, Europa League and, crucially Euro 2020.

The fate of this summer’s major international tournament is expected to hold the key to what options Europe’s top leagues will have when attempting to complete the 2019/20 season.

Fantasy managers should also pay close attention to any updates coming from UK prime minister Boris Johnson in the coming days.

It was reported on Saturday morning that the British government are contemplating a u-turn on their decision not to ban mass gatherings, such as sporting fixtures.

If such legislation does come into force in the coming days, it could well extend beyond the Premier League’s current return-date of April 4, although, at this stage, we do not know what the government’s exact plans will be.

Furthermore, England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty claimed that the peak of COVID-19 outbreak in the UK is likely to occur in May and June.

Meanwhile, another FPL name was added to the list of those that had tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, this time Wolves forward Patrick Cutrone (£5.5m), currently on loan at Italian side Fiorentina.

That news came on a surreal day for Fantasy managers and football fans worldwide, as we were left with no matches to watch other than non-league fixtures.

Southampton made light of the situation on their official club Twitter, attempting to play a game of noughts and crosses with Gameweek 30 opponent Norwich City.

The Canaries’ media team were conspicuous by their absence but Manchester City dropped by to accept Southampton’s invitation of a competitive match.

Naturally, the two sides drew their inaugural noughts and crosses bout.

Elsewhere, Saturday was a day for the executive members of football clubs in the Premier League to have their say.

Brighton chief executive Paul Barber was one of those, who expressed his concern over when the Premier League could resume.

“We’ve got several teams in self-isolation, which makes it difficult to think about that date. Those players have not just got to self-isolate for 14 days, they’ve got to get themselves close to match fitness again, which could take another seven to 14 days. So we’ve got a number of complexities here, which go way beyond thinking of the finances.” – Paul Barber

Meanwhile, West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady caused some controversy as she made early claims that the 2019/20 Premier League season would have to be declared null and void.

“There is no dodging the possibility that all levels in the EFL, as well as the Premier League, will have to be cancelled and this season declared null and void because if the players can’t play the games can’t go ahead.” – Karren Brady

Also, Wolves chairman Jeff Shi has called on supporters to do everything they can to stop the spread of COVID-19.

“I appeal to our supporters to follow our lead, and to stay as safe as possible during what will no doubt be a very testing time. Please don’t underestimate the threat of this virus, to you or those around you, and employ best practice to limit the spread, including good hygiene and proper social distancing, which are both key.” – Jeff Shi

In better news, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who was the first Premier League figure to contract COVID-19, has revealed that he is doing much better.

“Thanks for your words and support. We’re all facing a huge and unprecedented challenge. Everyone’s health is all that matters right now. Protect each other by following the guidelines. We’ll come through this together.” – Mikel Arteta

      if they ask you to explain, i got away with;

'well i did a big shop at the grocers so when i got home, I needed to clear some space in the cupboards.

I climbed up onto the kitchen surface and my trousers fell down (taking with them, my underpants).

This caused me to lose my balance and i fell onto the unpacked shopping, and those vegetables went straight up there'

Just heard interesting rumour. That for next season if games cannot be completed, Liverpool will be crowned champions, there will be no relegation but West Brom and Leeds will be promoted. Then in 20/21 5 teams will be relegated to set numbers right.

They do not seem to have the best experts on it.
Over 200 top scientists have openly disagreed and asked to see the data on which the government's scientific advisers are basing there recommendation.
          https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-51892402

WHO does not understand why UK reacts that way either.

Former UK health ministers also surprised.
And so on and so on.

Just because some come up with fancy graphs and talk of herd immunity as well as behavioral science mumbo jumbo, does not make it right.
Especially when many more experts point to the opposite and that the terms are used in a wrong context and under wrong assumptions.

In fact, the UK government is starting to back track on some of the statements they made. Utterly incompetent.

Google those 200 'scientists'. One of them has a specialism in Astronomy. Didn't realise an Astromony degree was so useful in predicting how a virus spreads.

Per the BBC report you linked:

"the 229 specialists in disciplines ranging from mathematics to genetics - though no leading experts in the science of the spread of diseases"

Thanks for your input and appreciate your points!

They have a wide range of specialisms, some more or less related to it.

When it comes to interpretation of data, experts from a wide field can give an input.

But if you want to rely on experts from a closely related field only: Why is it then that virtually no one else from other countries says: Hang on, we got it all wrong, let the virus loose and herd immunity is the way forward?

Not sure if this guy is more credible, but here we go (obviously US based, so did not sign the UK stuff I mentioned earlier):
              https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/mar/15/epidemiologist-britain-herd-immunity-coronavirus-covid-19

Too early to say incompetent government, IMO. If there was an obvious right answer then every would be doing exactly the same thing.

Thought these tweets did a good job of explaining what the UK Government are trying to do.

        https://twitter.com/amyvoce/status/1239161277454442498?s=20

Spain and Italy in lockdown. But who is to say they won't get screwed in the next European winter because loads of the population have been locked up?

At the moment I trust Whitty and Vallance and the teams backing them up. I do think the Government could be better at communicating the message though, starting with daily press conferences.

          I see your point.
And you are right as well, they could be right. But that would be because they are gambling with lives.
I watched the press conference live. When pressed, they did not want to commit to a figure of how many people could possibly die with their strategy.

Certainly they way how they communicated could be improved.

Guess we will all have to wait and see.

I think that the scientists are doing OK - they have the necessary degree of gravitas and explain things well. Politicians I am less sure of. If everything shuts down who is going to look after all the children of the NHS workers? We're in unchartered waters and I hope that the UK approach turns out to be a sensible one.

They do have gravitas and make it sound good - that is part of their job in this context (scientic advisors)

But they were lucky it was only questioned by regular journalists.

I am not surprised other scientists have questioned them publicly afterwards.

There are just too many question marks and they can blind some parts of the public by using flatten the curve, herd immunity and behavioural fatigue, talking about the right timing of measures etc.

Anyway, it is what it is.

The thinking here is that a vaccination is only a matter of time so the less people die until then the better. Boris & his circus look to be gambling on the herd principle & "over 70's locked down for a very long time" which simply will not work.

Joe Rogan #1439 with Michael Osterholm is a great watch/listen on this if you have 90 mins to kill

This guy is director of CIDRAP (Centre for Infectious Diseases Research & Policy) in the US & has written books on this stuff - including one in 2017 on the possibility of a global influenza pandemic

Lots of sense talked, lots of myths debunked, lots of sobering advice

FPL could offer a free WC to all given the situation - completely unprecedented turn of events. Who know what will happen

Could work. I guess people could see it as having a wildcard over somone who doesn't at all is a huge advantage. More so than having 2 vs 1. Imagine if world number 1 who had a wc left and the 3 or 4 below disny

I presume that you mean "That doesn't sound fair on all the one's who have a wildcard left" . To give everyine another WC lessens the value of a retined existing one. To make the game fair they should lock the game after GW31 and only restart it when the matches start.

If they can reset your team after a freehit, they could offer those who did the 2nd wildcard the after gameweek just before the postponement was announced, a similar WC revoke and team reset? In fairness it's extraordinary circumstances and we're using that WC expecting a fairly stable set of fixtures.

Big fear there is that some fans will try and congregate near the closed door grounds, risk of infection and/or public order offences and clashes with police. Given the eejits still heading to the pubs here, totally irresponsible, it's more likely than unlikely.

You just stated play these games behind closed doors. It is only because the clubs took it seriously that Arteta even knew he was infected. You want to play Russian roulette with the infection and use the football teams as guinea pigs. Exactly like Rooney said.

Also, this disadvantages teams with more home fixtures left.

As some managers and journalists have said, football is entertainment, so what’s the point in playing without a crowd?

I caught the highlights of the Man Utd LASK game and it was like watching some blokes have a kick around on one of the local community pitches. It ruins the game.

Also, as a season ticket holder, I personally would rather wait until games are deemed safe to attend, rather than play them without fans. I’m not massively bothered if they’re cancelled and I don’t get to see them at all if the circumstances dictate that though.

      1. GreennRed

They want to run the games off to sort out relegation/ promotion/EL and CL qualification and players futures based on those outcomes. Some players can decide to move, stay at same club based on end of season finish. Plus the revenue v relegation/ promotion/ staying in PL/ qualifying for Europe. That's football's reason. It's a load of bollo# though. They should start negotiating on how to keep players under contract or on loan spells beyond the end of June but ultimately be prepared to abandon the season because people's lives are more important.

If the PL gets voided, what is everyone doing about their Mini Leagues?

We have a guy in ours who has been 5th all season, just got to the top thanks to the Arsenal vs City game being postponed (many teams with 3/4 to play in our ML) and now claims he should be paid for 1st place if the PL is voided..

Bookmakers would refund all long term bets if voided. You could do the same. You could consider paying out 50% if the pool ti the winners. Paying out in full too the winners would be unfair to those that still havs a shout. GL

No way. I just got into the lead 2 weeks ago with a 8 point lead right now. I have BB, WC and FH left, while everyone trailing in my league has used all of their chips. I was also prepared with 9 for GW31 while they had like 4. If that 8 point lead was 9 points the other way, I would be seething if they were declared the winner. The PL has no chips that cause variance so I don't see why we should follow their lead. Following their lead in the draft game is fine but not in FPL.

That is going to be a tricky question to answer for league admins.

Options would be payout to final standings or money back which would be messy especially in large money leagues.I am in a largish 50 a man league with prizes and 50 for manager of the month which has been payed out to date. Not easy to sort out to everyone’s satisfaction.

I am happy to leave any decision to the wisdom of any league admin I am involved with.

I'm in a league of 92 and it was a £20 buy in. I'm currently 9th and my mate is 5th. So we are in the prize bracket.

Personally I think everyone should just be refunded their £20 if the FPL season doesn't end.

I'm confident I can get higher than 9th so I don't see why we should pretend the current positions are final.

If the season stands null and void then so does FPL. All entrants should get their entry fees back in this case.

If the season is completed and so is FPL then winners should be paid out.

There could also be a case in which EPL season is completed in June and FPL is scrapped before. In that case also all entrants should get their entry fees back.

I’m doing whatever fpl do. If the season is voided and they award their prizes on current standings I will award them too. if they void the season I will too. I personally think if it’s PL void then FPL is void and people should just get their money back but I’ll defer to whatever the official game does all the same

Sounds like there is not much trust/friendships between people in ML's? I am 60 points up, been leading all season and we have agreed to pay any money due so far (due to spot prizes through year) but in event of no more games /incomplete season then the big end of season money won't get paid out.

The effects from lockdown measures are not being reflected yet.
The deaths now (and if I understand correctly for a few more days) are because of not having enforced lockdown earlier.

Hence why a lot of the other countries such as France, Spain are going into lockdown having seen that any delay will cause dramatic rises (not sure if word exponentially applies here).

      That could be pretty bad

Apparently Italy’s 2019 mortality rate was 10.5 deaths per 1000 people... in a country with 60.48m population, that’s ~635,000 deaths per year - or 1,740 deaths per day

If this means an EXTRA 368 deaths on top of the “normal” 1,740 per day then this is getting pretty out of hand - you could extrapolate that to some pretty big numbers over a year

Hopefully my maths is all over the place here & it’s just totally wrong

      1. Klaren
        • 6 Years
        4 years, 13 days ago

Those mortality rates assume that all cases are 'confirmed' whereas in reality majority of the cases don't even get tested. Therefore the reported mortality rates are significantly higher than they actually are.

The actual mortality rate is estimated to be 0.3% to 1.0%.

      WWE lost the plot, IMO.

Pushing part-timers (Cena, Undertaker, Lesnar, Goldberg, Edge, Hardy) rather than promoting their existing talent who turn up every week (Styles, Rollins, Sheamus) and the youngsters (Velveteen Dream).

Trying again after new article ended it last time. Just a thought:

Which players start the season well historically? Are there a few that are always quick of the mark?

Given the long break we are likely to see, before PL restarts (If it does this season), could be worth looking at the early pace setters.

Salah, Aguero, Sterling, Richarlison. Antonio tends to do well when he is back from injuries.

In terms of defenders probably those with settled teams and not many transfers in and out like Burnley and maybe Sheffield Utd.

How about the rest of the FPL schedule be played on a FIFA 2020 game console?

In simulation mode with no human player?

We can play the rest of the game weeks without disruption.

Would be just a fun as the FPL season if they stream the simulations online.

Would be awesome solution to a sad situation

      I had same idea 🙂
Not gonna happen obv but someone could make a new fantasy game based on that till we get real football back (it can take a while Im afraid)

World Cup 2022 gonna be in Winter so we need to change system/callendar of leagues at some point so lets change the way we play leagues just now.

We can finish this season in May/June/July/August. Euro gonna be in December on in 2021 anyway. Next season can start later and we can simply not play any domnestic cups like league cup etc. so there will be enough dates to play next season.

Just heard about herd immunity thing. It seems crazy. Sounds like a huge gamble.

There are only two ways to stamp out the virus before a vaccine becomes available about 18 months from now
      1. The entire world all go into total effective isolation for a month at the exact same time.
      2. Develop herd immunity while keeping a lid on the vulnerable getting ill.

Otherwise all a local shutdown does is have it aĺl kick off again as soon as the shutdown ends.

Seems logical if they want the league to resume with full stadiums! Could have a customary group makeout during the break

It’s not a huge gamble. It’s a strong option in taking on a virus of this kind.

London is obviously the covid19 epicentre here in the UK. Government bangs on about hand cleanliness.
Yet no tube stops (as an example) have any hand sanitizers or hand washing facilities yet. Why?

      Good point.

Couple of things that spring to mind are the speed with which things are developing, and that TFL are skint, like most public bodies, after the two millionaires Cameron and Osborne imposed austerity for the greater good. Hmm.

It has been known that you can (I think I even read it is more likely) infect others while not showing symptoms.

Hence why many countries have chosen to enforce lockdowns.

No, you it is much less likely to pass it on while showing no symptoms. You are infectious while showing symptoms (eg coughing particularly).

Those with mild COVID-19 infections may not be infectious after about 10 days of symptoms. ... People infected with the novel coronavirus shed large quantities of the virus early in their illness and likely become less infectious as the disease wears on, according to a small study.

Many will show no symptoms, very very many won't even get tested (vast majority). You won't even hear about most people who have it and have mild symptoms or no symptoms.

Thought we knew all this as we're all reading up on this all day (between games of Connect 4).
