Over 75,000 FPL managers use chip in Gameweek 30

While Fantasy Premier League has scant relevance compared to what else is happening in the world at present, it’s still worth acknowledging that we’ve just had a Gameweek – and a very odd one at that.

Not one Premier League match was played in the weekend just gone but the Gameweek 30 deadline came and went as originally scheduled, with many Fantasy managers seeing green arrows despite scoring zero in this Blank Gameweek to end all Blank Gameweeks.

As recently as last Thursday, all ten top-flight fixtures in Gameweek 30 were set to go ahead as intended.

Mikel Arteta’s positive test result for COVID-19 four days ago was the first in a chain of events that led to the Premier League making a swift U-turn on their decision to proceed as normal, however, with play suspended until after the March international break at the earliest.

An emergency Premier League meeting this Thursday will hopefully firm up plans for the remainder of the season but the forecasted spread of coronavirus over the coming weeks and months may make a Gameweek 32 resumption difficult to achieve.

What happens in that upcoming conference will in turn shape FPL’s strategy for the 2019/20 run-in but we do anticipate that Gameweek 31 will likely be exactly the same as Gameweek 30, in there being a fixed deadline (19:00 GMT on Friday) and no fixtures played whatsoever.

At least we know the full extent of Blank Gameweek 31 well in advance.

We had less than 48 hours notice of the Gameweek 30 wipeout and there were plenty of Fantasy managers who had made an early transfer (perhaps to beat a price rise/fall) ahead of the cessation of play.

In all, over 2.3 million moves were made in the run-up to the Gameweek 30 deadline – although some of those trades may have been tactical ones after Friday’s announcement in order to burn an allotted free transfer.

Similarly, there were a significant number of us Fantasy managers (76,958 in all) who deployed a chip in Gameweek 30, with the Wildcard and Free Hit unable to be cancelled once activated.

The full breakdown was as follows:

Wildcard36,371
Free Hit10,811
Bench Boost20,080
Triple Captain9,696

Amongst the top 10,000 managers in FPL, just over 0.5% used a precious chip.

One solitary Fantasy boss from this group used their Free Hit, while two deployed their Triple Captain chip (both on Mohamed Salah (£12.7m)) and six played their Bench Boost.

Forty-two of the top 10k activated their second Wildcard of the season, meanwhile.

All of which leaves the top 10,000 managers in contrasting shape should there be a resumption of play in Gameweek 32 or beyond – and that does remain a question mark at present.

Just under 10% of this elite group, for example, have all four chips intact going into what could be a series of Double Gameweeks in the final stretch of the campaign.

By contrast, over one in five of the top 10k will have one chip or fewer with which to navigate the run-in.

If the Premier League grinds back into action in Gameweek 32 (and again, that’s a big ‘if’), then Liverpool will clinch their first title in 30 years with a win at the Etihad.

Fantasy managers are certainly well-stocked with Liverpool players at present: three of the top eight most-owned FPL assets in the top 10k are on the Reds’ books, while Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) also sneaks into the ‘template’ squad below.

Owners of Raul Jimenez (£8.1m) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) at least have the consolation of knowing that their FPL forwards have favourable Gameweek 32 fixtures if the top flight gets back underway in early-April, with Aston Villa and Norwich City providing the opposition for Wolves and Arsenal.

Bruno Fernandes (£8.5m) and Anthony Martial (£7.9m) were the two most-bought midfielders ahead of Gameweek 30 and their new and existing owners will be encouraged by the fixture schedule from Gameweek 32 onwards, should play happen to recommence then.

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.6m) was by some distance the most-sold FPL asset of last Gameweek, meanwhile.

Manchester City have four outstanding top-flight fixtures to rearrange and there exists the prospect of multiple Double Gameweeks for Pep Guardiola’s side should the hiatus not last too long – although COVID-19, the UK government, the Premier League and UEFA may between them have other ideas as to when we’ll see a ball kicked again.

Realistically, the chances of this season of FPL returning seem extremely slim.

It's going to take a decent amount of time before teams will have their full squads back and available to them, and by then most of the FPL gameweeks will have been and gone with zero games played.

If the euros are postponed until next year then it is feasible. They could have the “offseason” now and spend time with their families, then resume the remaining 9 gameweeks in late June to mid August, with the 20-21 season starting shortly after. Domestic cups could be cancelled for next season to cope with the congestion and its possible

The Euros need to be postponed now, I'm not sure why they're taking so long to make that decision. Whatever each of us all feel about the possibility of domestic football resuming in the foreseeable, surely we can all agree that the idea of this summer's tournament going ahead - particularly in this format of multiple venues all across Europe - is moronic.

I was specifically talking about FPL, not the premier league. I think FPL will continue to treat the gameweeks as normal with no games or they will simply shut the site down.

2 days without sports and I found out what I could do with long hours of uninterrupted writing. Nearly 2 weeks (or even more?) worth of writing done on my PhD Dissertation in the last two days.

Didn't realize sports had such an impact. Not that I spent long hours here and watching sports only, but the constant urge of rewarding myself with a hard earned break (5 minute break becomes 2 hours 😀 ) after half an hour of work (but thought it was 5 hours worth 😛 ) broke the flow. I really hope I can make the most of this break to reach towards the finish line (which I thought was a little far but much more positive of reaching there sooner rather than later). I hope others here are also utilizing this time to come up with productive outcomes 😀

Great post, saved me from having to look up the stats on chip usage. Providing the PL season is not canceled, managers that still have all their chips still or at least with the FH & WC left, may have a slight advantage over the managers that already played their FH & WC chip.

Though I still have all my chips, I think the FH & WC chips have the potential to have more of an impact than the BB & TC chip will. That said, the BB & TC chip can still give you an advantage, just not as much as the FH & WC could have.

The downside to having all your chips available may be if the fixtures are re-scheduled to still finish the season on GW38 instead of extending the season. If the fixtures are moved to be able to finish the season in GW38, it likely will have a few teams with a triple GW which I feel will have the potential for more player rotation than a DGW has.

Should the season be canceled, it will be irritating but likely will be the right decision. Player and Fan safety is more important than us having the chance to play this game.

I ma quite pleased that we are continuing to get FTs every week - assuming the season will go ahead but with a load of DGWs and TGWs (and maybe QGWs) seems to make sense just to stock up on players who have best remaining fixtures regardless of their order and something to play for.

It is not as simple as cancelling the season.

It is more likely to be finished at a later date.

Canceling the season and when exactly does the new season start?

      Then

Who gets relegated if the season is cancelled? Who gets promoted if the season is cancelled?

Who qualifies for Europe if the season is cancelled?

Just cancel it and cause a massive volcano eruption.

"Each Club shall play two League Matches against each other Club each Season, being the Home Club in respect of one such League Match and the Visiting Club in respect of the other."

Thus the season cannot be cancelled otherwise breach of rules.

Will have to be finished at a later date.

"Clubs have the opportunity to propose new rules or amendments at the Shareholder meeting. Each Member Club is entitled to one vote and all rule changes and major commercial contracts require the support of at least a two-thirds vote, or 14 clubs, to be agreed."

I don't envisage a scenario where 14 clubs vote in favour of 'voiding' a season so pretty much expect the season to be played out when it's safe to do so, unless the PL offer an alternative. The biggest factor at the forefront of their decision will be £££, which to me suggests they'll want to complete fixtures.

Voiding the season pretty much means no payouts for what position you currently finish in as it is void.

      Could be wrong.

What happens to tv revenue if the season is cancelled?

UEFA also would need to know who plays in the CL the next season.

I guess the FA can just cherry pick the four teams should this League season be cancelled?

Again, I am not a fundy when it comes to this but cancelling the season will open up legal cases left right and centre.

      1. goriuanx
        • 13 Years

Voiding the season is looking less and less likely given the information that is being made available - let's see what the PL say. There's only 9 games per team which need to be played - they can delay next season if needs be.

        1. FOO FIGHTER
          • 4 Years

Aston Villa have a game in hand so a scenario where they are just relegated would be massive breach of rules.

Each scenario other than moving the season to be completed at a later date holds massive legal implications for the FA.

Nothing to be surprised about. Chips usually bring an advantage, so people who use them get more points. More points leads to a higher ranking. The top 10K are not an elite group of FPL managers, they are the group that have the most points at this point in time. And at this point in time many of them are at this rank because they've used their chips.

Impartial news reporting has gone the way of the Dodo i am afraid.

It looks like every news outlet now has taken sides and forgotten what they are actually there for.
Still some individual journalists that are not totally daft and still have an independent opionion that I look out for but they are few and far between.

When I look at the modern media class pontificating about what poor and working class should think and do it Instead of doing their job it sickens me.It is the worst form of elitism in my book as they know nothing at all about real working class struggles and certainly never held a shovel in their hands in their lives.Mostly rich kids who went to private schools and universities where they were indoctrinated in communism where they got high minded ideas how the rest of should live.

      No Thanks.

They have a slant, and will use anything to go against the person they don't like but having said that, I don't think there needs to be any great bias against Trump, just reporting his actual behaviour and decisions should be enough for normal decent human beings to see he's garbage

For the integrity of the competition to be upheld it must be completed it’s as simple as that. There is mass panic at the moment but give it a month and things will have significantly calmed down, with people thinking a lot more rationally. There is a 4 month window where this season can be completed and I fully expect that will happen, the people making the decisions need to look at what things will be like in a few months time and not the panic station situation mode we are in now, people need to calm down, having this break is horrendous but if we didn’t have this forced suspension we may not have football for a significantly longer period.

No I don’t, and of course I am not for one minute suggesting coronavirus will just disappear, I’m just saying the hysteria will have calmed down a lot and when panic and hysteria have been removed from a situation you see things a lot differently. The English premier league 19/20 will be completed at some stage later down the line everybody will just have to be patient.

Realistically the season has to be completed before June 30th (player contracts ending) and it seems very unlikely Premier League can be completed in that timeframe.

There are still 10 matches to be played which would require at least 30 days and it would mean they would have to restart by the end of May. That’s when the virus is expected to be at its peak in the UK.

Great Explanation of why this is concerning...
Feeling confused as to why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it is in a nutshell. I hope this helps. Feel free to share this to others who don’t understand...
It has to do with RNA sequencing.... I.e. genetics.
Seasonal flu is an “all human virus”. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year... you get immunity two ways...through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot.
Novel viruses, come from animals.... the WHO tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1) (birds in the case of the Spanish flu). But once, one of these animal viruses mutates, and starts to transfer from animals to humans... then it’s a problem, Why? Because we have no natural or acquired immunity.. the RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isn’t human, and the human immune system doesn’t recognize it so, we can’t fight it off.
Now.... sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human, for years it’s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to human... once that happens..we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, thats what decides how contagious, or how deadly it’s gonna be..
H1N1 was deadly....but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish flu. It’s RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently, too.
        Fast forward.
Now, here comes this Coronavirus... it existed in animals only, for nobody knows how long...but one day, at an animal market, in Wuhan China, in December 2019, it mutated and made the jump from animal to people. At first, only animals could give it to a person... But here is the scary part.... in just TWO WEEKS it mutated again and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, “slippery”
This Coronavirus, not being in any form a “human” virus (whereas we would all have some natural or acquired immunity). Took off like a rocket. And this was because, Humans have no known immunity...doctors have no known medicines for it.
And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus, changed itself in such a way the way that it causes great damage to human lungs..
That’s why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1 or any other type of influenza.... this one is slippery AF. And it’s a lung eater...And, it’s already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain s, and strain L....which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine.
We really have no tools in our shed, with this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. Philadelphia and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in the US during the Spanish Flu.
Factoid: Henry VIII stayed in his room and allowed no one near him, till the Black Plague passed...(honestly...I understand him so much better now). Just like us, he had no tools in his shed, except social isolation...
And let me end by saying....right now it’s hitting older folks harder... but this genome is so slippery...if it mutates again (and it will). Who is to say, what it will do next.
Be smart folks... acting like you’re unafraid is so not sexy right now.
#flattenthecurve. Stay home folks... and share this to those that just are not catching on.

Definitely easier said than done. Shite is getting real here in the states with the CDC saying today that they recommend no gatherings larger than 50 people for the next 8 weeks. Many cities have already gone into quarantine mode. Today in Pittsburgh, we have been told that all bars and dine in restaurants are to be closed for a minimum of two weeks, and only those restaurants that can provide delivery or take away service can remain open. The state of New Jersey has instituted a 20:00 curfew for all individuals who do not have to be at a job, and this is just the beginning

Very good read - what is the general consensus on how China’s have dealt with this?

Reason I ask - they were the earliest/first impacted country - but their death toll currently stands at 3,213 - from 80,860 cases - whilst those numbers obviously dwarf anything yet seen in Europe (Although Italy looks to be heading to a much worse set of numbers), they still seem a bit on the low side versus a population of 2.5 billion

Is it just China have no testing capacity therefore these published numbers are the tiny tip of a massive iceberg? Or did they implement a really successful lockdown to contain things in Wuhan? Or is it that Chinese New Year finishing is just now releasing the flood gates in travel around China again & we’re about to see an absolute explosion in Chinese cases? Are they really much further on in the infection curve Han other countries etc

From what I have been able to gather, China was very aggeessive with their lock down protocol, administering test kits and building brand new hospital facilities in a matter of weeks. Doing this, they have been able to slow the spread and flatten the curve to where they seem to have made progress. Unlike over here in America, where our leadership first began by denying itbl existed, then called it a hoax, then told the WHO we didn't need their free test kits because we could make our own better ones and now he's just saying nobe of this is his fault or his responsibility and that each state is pretty much on their own

It’s actually astounding when you take a step back & think that they’ve somehow managed to limit a country of 1.5 billion to only 80,000 cases & 3,000 deaths - from what is effectively a 3-5% mortality rate disease that has been loose for over 3 months

Maybe too good to be true & the real situation there is much, much worse, or maybe just timing & the situation there is about to get much, much worse?

Even worldwide the current death count is a relatively low 7,118 from 180,501 cases - albeit if that doubles every week as it could then we’re at 32 million cases worldwide by June

The description of Covid19 as a “lung-eater” is pretty chilling - mass pneumonia-driven demand for respirators/oxygen will cripple any health service & leave 15% of Covid19 cases lungs scarred for months, years, and even permanently 🙁

On Miami Beach - Business as usual

On Saturday, there were Russians and various other Europeans everywhere. People in pools, ocean, hot tubs, and night clubs.

I would say that China only having 70,000 infected in the epicenter city (8.5M) with 3,000 dying is probably closest we will get to worst case scenario (outside of aged, smoker-culture Italy)- if China is telling the truth about the numbers. Also Iran's outbreak is a practical experiment on Herd Immunity. The Iranians can't print money or call upon the greatest companies on Earth to manufacture Respirators. Iran currently has a 5.2% death rate on 14,000 confirmed cases. Which means probably 1.0% death rate when you include all the blokes that have it and show no symptoms.

The thing about Coronavirus is that it CAN be a lethal "lung eater" in CERTAIN people. For the vast majority, it will cause a snivel. For some, you need a respirator and a modern health system.

I bet India and Sub-Saharan Africa will simply ask people to wash hands and keep on trucking. The US may end up bankrupting itself to prevent not that much.

I hope the powers that be at FPL are looking into the option of adding additional game weeks beyond GW38 as this seems to be what will be required if the league does conclude later in the year. It would be ridiculous to have a massive GW38. Personally, in regards to fairness I can't see any fair outcome away from completing the current campaign. Even if it means delaying (or even cancelling!) next seasons.

More rises in rank were caused by transfers than by hits.

If you look at the first page of the overall standings, you will see that Christopher Berchoux dropped from 14th to 15th after making one transfer, but Simon Evans dropped from 44th to 57th after taking a 4 point hit, with the 10 players immediately above him all getting green arrows as a result.

Why do you care? Have same points

Interesting, didn't know that. Still I don't think it's worth burning a FT in order to gain a few ranks. If the season resumes at some point, that FT used on reshaping your team will come in a lot handier.

Use the transfer. GW rank of 1 means nothing at the moment, literally

How can a free transfer cost points during 'non-GWs'? Am I missing something?

Not points, but overall rank. If players have the same overall points those who have used less transfers are ranked higher.

That makes sense. You learn something new everyday ... Cheers for the reply!

I assume you didn't use one last week then?
Did Ryan to Krul myself - so just one here I think (unless I have lost fpl focus)

Seems like a good time to sort out those sideways moves - e.g. Boly to Doherty

I assume BGW31 will now become a DGW if it happens? So choose carefully

Ings > DCL is a logical move currently right?

That’s the move I plan this week assuming season not cancelled on Thursday

I did that last week. Was only holding Ings for Norwich anyway then was planning on getting Chris Wood for the blank.

        I'm doing one of...
        A. Holgate/Soy/Stephens to Man Utd defender
        B. Ings to DCL
        C. Button to playing cheapie (McCarthy for example) and pair with Krul

Atleast they used, doubt I'll be able to use any of my four chips

Think I'll get rid of Dendoncker this week. Not nailed and taking up a potentially useful Wolves spot. Hayden the best option for 4.5m max?

Not a bad idea. If you have cash...Saint Max would be nice for their fixtures. But at 4.5 you are right I expect.

Seems to have one his place back , cheap as chips, occasional return, one of NUFC's - so far - postponed games will be against Villa.
