How important are free-kicks and corners in FPL?

With the 2019/20 season on hold for some time yet, we again switch our focus to broader topics surrounding Fantasy Premier League and football in general.

In this latest Members’ article, we take a closer look at the importance of free-kicks and corners.

We study the dead-ball specialists and their teams in greater detail and ask just how much attention we should be paying – or not – to those who are on set-play duties.

HOW MANY GOALS ARE SCORED FROM SET-PIECE SITUATIONS?

Standard Liverpool that said they could go down in history as the unluckiest team ever.

That would be such a shame

Hard to believe that only 2 of KDB's 18 assists came from set pieces but there the numbers are.

Why is that i wonder?Maybe because City are not the tallest team in the PL or just Pep's tactics.
I refuse to believe that it is down to a lack of talent from Kevin that is for sure.

Thanks for yet another excellent article Neale.

We need football back on the telly even if it behind closed doors and streamed to individual homes. People need some kind of normality back.

Football is well down the list of needs Virg.

Even if you tried to play behind closed doors then people would still congregate outside the stadiums as we seen in Europe and would also tie up essential personal to police the events,it is just not on.

You are right though that people need to be entertained but not to the detriment of public safety.
Make your own fun i guess to help relieve the pressure cooker of self isolation.I have no silver bullet Virgin,i wish i did.

It's ironic that there was more worry on this site re possible fixture cancellations etc,. way before anybody in government was doing anything. Supermarkets were still planning their Spring advertising instead of stocking up on dry goods (Pasta, Rice, Beans etc)

22 people running about a football field is quite a bit in excess of a maximum gathering of 2 people.

After one or two months lock down people will have mental issues and need something to do. "Bread and circus pleasures"... Mentality about playing behind closed doors will change when public finds out that they are not going to watch live football this year.

Closest I remember to this historically, albeit infinitely less serious, was the three day week, along with long power cuts virtually every night, during the 70's

People had no tv to watch, smart phones computers and the internet were things you read about in Arthur C Clarke novels. So what did most do? Went to bed early, and the result was a baby boom the following year. πŸ™‚

We do inspection work. Technically its needed to keep roads and rail open. We cant not do it, but it should be the only thing were doing away from home. We travel in cars in the same teams, with frequent sanitiser and avoid everyone else. This was a speedy straightforward business decision last week. You dont send people to work without precaution.

All offices are now skeleton staff only and everyone is 2m+ away from each other. I went to collect my PPE early and there were 4 people on what is normally a floor of 100. This should be the story everywhere.

They have been too vague throughout this, tonight was another example, sadly.

My wife was sent home from work on Thursday with a cough and told to stay home for 14 days. She works for a timber merchants, can’t work from home and after tonight’s announcement she doesn’t know if her workplace is shut down or not.

Thankfully I’ve been homeworking since last Wednesday, but others who should have been doing the same have had to go and expose themselves to this virus.

They reckon that the virus made the jump to a human form a pangolins in a wet meat market in Wuhan and mutated thereafter to the strain/strains that are sweeping the world now.

This is what a pangolins looks like EF.....

A whole-genome comparison found that the pangolin and human viruses in fact share only 90.3% of their RNA, thus ruling out the animals as a direct source. The initial speculation about pangolins being the origin of the virus may have led to mass slaughters.

A bunch of Chinese researchers traced it to a biowepons facility in Wuhan where they think it made the jump to a human.Their research was pulled by the Chinese government and swept under the carpet so we might never really know.

That's a fair opinion. It's the way they handle these animals though, treat them and butcher them. Obscene.

Absolutely. I'm fine with people eating anything they want (cats, dogs, slugs, whatever) as long as it is both safe and humane. I know very little about the wet markets but it doesn't sound like it meets my criteria.

I think it is illegal in China tbf but they were obliviously not enforcing their own laws.

What i am really pissed off with is the criminal enterprise that is the Chinese government and their blatant cover up of what is really going on over there.Like for instance the drop in new cases in China at the moment.....

Stopping testing people is one way to get the recorded number of new cases down to those bunch of utter scumbags i guess.

Germany are coping better than most other countries too

Their death rate is (in relation to other countries - not in absolute terms) phenomenally low

They have 29,956 cases, with 129 fatalities

To put that into context - the U.K. has around triple the fatalities (335) from around a fifth of the cases (6,650)

Remains to be seen if Germany can maintain that (comparatively, not absolutely) low fatality rate over the coming weeks - but hopefully they can, and can also share how they are managing it

I read somewhere that Germany can record primary reason for death as pneumonia (secondary as Covid-19) wish would explain their low rates.

I can’t however seem to find a source for this so take with a pinch of salt.

I found this a very interesting read https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/why-is-the-coronavirus-mortality-rate-so-much-lower-in-germany-

The TLDR attributes the low death rate to a combination of 3 things

              (1) That Italy were (and are) way too complacent on testing compared to Germany

              (2) The age demographic - Italy’s median age of fatalities is 81, with average age of cases being 63. Germany’s median age of cases is 45

              (3) The way Italy are reporting deaths - they are doing posthumous testing on all deaths, and if the deceased tests positive for Covid19, the death is attributed solely to Covid19. Now I am no doctor - but this seems like a borderline irresponsible way to inflate the Covid19 fatality numbers in a country, and the panic/fear that would come with it

Important to be wary of the supposed numbers.

Ultimately, there's enough clarity from Italian healthcare workers:

It’s a dark time, but Italy’s death toll, whilst utterly tragic and growing at a terrifying rate - has an average age of 79.5, a median age of 81 (80.5), and 99% of fatalities had at least one or more other underlying health conditions or illnesses:

Germans have been testing more also milder cases, so numbers are therefore better. And they are also behind France with this epidemic. (Here in Finland for example we have only one death atm and 700 hundred verified cases. Cases are so new, that most just haven't had enough time to die.)

Yep testing is being called out as one of he biggest reasons for Germany’s lower mortality rate

Basically the more you test, the lower the fatality rate - as you pull more & more of the mild cases into the sample size, getting closer to the effective “true” mortality rate

Interestingly this article suggests that the actual mortality rate for Covid19 is around 0.5% (I.e very close to Germany) rather than the current 4.2% global WHO tally, the 9.5% rate in Italy or the 5.0% rate in the U.K.etc for precisely that testing-driven reason:

yeah this has been obvious for ages too, it's still terrible (and way worse than 'normal flu') but it's not 4%+ levels, and is overly concentrated in vulnerable groups.

I don't know the viability of it but I can't help but think they should have gone nuclear with their over-65 (and im-compromised) population isolation (maybe offer free/heavily subsidised food/medicine delivery) and just kept the show on the road for everyone else (with as much social distancing as possible of course)

David Icke suggests a similar “cocooning” type policy for at risk demographics here:

                  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gMTZu6_TjU8

I do personally find some hope though in the thought that rather than defying medical science with such a low fatality rate, that Germany may be the ones who are actually getting closest to it with their exemplary focus on testing

As said above though, it’s a very dark time, and you have to look very hard/dig very deep to try find any good news in the current climate

could have given me a timestamp πŸ˜€ a LOT of very questionable (but also very interesting) ideas in the first half, but completely agree with the ending - I don't really understand why we are putting pressure on everyone's livelihoods when the most vulnerable can be 'cocooned', it makes little sense to me - but maybe the virus has potential long term affects on the 'invulnerable?' that we are being protected from, who knows

obviously don't agree with the very end conclusion either, but it's far from the realms of possibility that certain people are taking this as a perfect opportunity to profit from the collapse and eventual recovery of the financial markets

The cocooning in particular resonated as a sound course of action, implementation practicalities not withstanding

yeah - if he just said 'cocooning makes sense but they are not doing that because they wanted to put an end to the recent bull market/bubble and then eventually profit from the recession', whilst more likely to be true, it wouldn't be as punchy/interesting/captivating as 'they aren't cocooning because lizard aliens want to enslave us all' or whatever (I'm exaggerating obv).

Yeah, people dismissed as crazy can often have some pretty good points - dare I say the Unabomber's ideas can potentially be looked on with hindsight as being 'right' (no need at all to blow innocent people up though).

I watched a video about someone who passionately hated roads the other day, the concept of them and all the negative effects (in his opinion) they have on society (some indirect that most wouldn't even consider, big corporations being one); obviously the comments were filled with people calling him an idiot, but it was pretty interesting

I have read the Unabomber's manifesto (Industrial Society and Its Future) and scarily found it to be a very rational assessment of modern society.

His logic was impressive which should not surprise considering he had a higher IQ than Einstein did but his method of dealing with the problems of modern society was crazy.

Fascinating case how someone like that could turn to the dark side and the case has a lot of parallels to the Oklahoma bomber's.Ted Kaczynski actually met Timothy McVeigh in prison and said what he thought of him in a interview.

Fairly well known now that Unabomber turned violent as a result of the CIA psychological "study" he took part in as a student at Harvard... It was a mind-control experiment obviously, and he determined a way to prove they couldn't control his....

                        Maybe so.

I have carried out enough of those "study's" on myself in my younger days to know that such things are pretty mind bending and have seen people that never recovered from the experience.

I have been down the rabbit hole of the Oklahoma bomber conspiracy theories too and the CIA link.

The Diamond Princess makes an interesting case study - that was the cruise ship left isolated of the coast of Japan. Basically a confined lab experiment on the infection rate and mortality rate

There were 3700 on board (passengers and crew) - 700 people were infected. 18% of those were asymptomatic and 8 people died

I live in Japan. That case you say is in fact like a lab experiment but we shouldn’t forget that this was one of the first cases found outside China. Meaning, Japan’s health system wasn’t strained and they could solely focus on these group of people. A person who was in close contact or in proximity of an infected person was immediately tested and taken out to hospital before they showed any symptoms. So, most were taken care of before they even got sick. I do not think similar is the case across the world at this moment. Not everyone is tested and not even sick people are finding hospital beds.

Russia is a different animal than the western democracy's though. Not as open a country as the likes of the European states are and Vlad did move quickly to close the borders tbf.

Maybe it is just me and my imagination running wild but i would not be surprised if dark forces have weaponized this thing. It would be easy for enemies of the likes of the UK,USA and others to grow this thing in a petri dish and spread it among the populations.

Lets hope that their are not people that crazy in the world but my experience says otherwise unfortunately.

Just assist the takeaway in getting government loans. Or cancel rent for a while.

firstly just wait to see if they pay it, or just suspend payments for 2 months as a matter of 'goodwill'? no-one is going to take over the rent for that shop over the next two months anyway, and it makes it more likely that they will be able to operate again when they get the go-ahead from government.

should be the possibility of grants and interest free loans too, but the business should be looking into that really - guess they could help as Gink says

Thanks both I am a asking to see a copy of the contract and also when the lease is due for renewal.

Think you guys are right we will have to be flexible, as otherwise no good will come from this.

Work something out that can let both sides survive.

If they can't afford the rent and you can, give them a 2 month moratorium as a goodwill measure.

If you need also, try to work something out - maybe pay just half or something like that?

It's all kicking off. 1 FT left.

        Pandemonium.

        Transfers left, right and centre.

Who knows how this conundrum will unravel itself.

        Henderson for Shilton perhaps?

Numb has a lot to answer for recommending Aaron Ramsdale in his first wildcard article for FF Hub.

I live on the main road into my town opposite a Morrison’s petrol station.

Genuinely seems like business as usual out there.

What is wrong with people in this country!!

If I had my way, they’d all be locked up or at the very least given some sort of fine.

Wake up and smell the coffee, PLEASE!!

Blaming government is much easier than self discipline !

        Couldn’t agree more, Amey.
The sooner they start to get a bit more heavy handed with these people, the better.

I think the trouble with people in this country is we don’t like being told what to do.

        Ask my wife πŸ˜‰

Actually it's easy to get urge to go out IMHO. But you are creating a trouble to government + risking your safety + Risking everyone else's safety too. No brainer to stay home.

I mean I'm also having a tough time sitting home like a duck πŸ˜›
I'm doing things which generally i wouldn't do to pass some time. Actually working 2 hours extra from home to avoid more free time, LOL

I’d even go as far to say that there’s a high percentage of people in this country, with the mentality of, the more they’re told to do something, the more they’ll try and resist it...
