World Cup of FPL – Group D

The Fantasy Football Scout World Cup of FPL is now in full swing, as we drop into a tough to call Group D.

Vying for the title of the ‘Group of Death’, today we’ve got a Liverpool derby, Lionel Messi’s favourite rival and a man that, until recently, arguably divided opinion in the Fantasy community.

To keep you in the loop, here are the first-round groups in full detail, including the latest results.

3. Raheem Sterling3. Clint Dempsey3. Jamie Vardy3. Alexis Sánchez
4. Nemanja Vidic4. Gareth McAuley4. Cesc Fabregas4. Petr Čech

As you can see, we’ve now got a fierce clash battle between Andrew Robertson, Cristiano Ronaldo and Eden Hazard.

Take a closer look at each option before voting in the poll below or in the side-bar.

ANDREW ROBERTSON

Now one of the most expensive defenders in the game, it is almost unbelievable that three years ago, you could purchase Andrew Robertson for under £5.0m.

At the start of 2017/18, the former Hull City man was sharing minutes with Alberto Moreno at Liverpool but made the left-back position his own after the turn of the year.

Having depreciated from the rotation, a select number of FPL managers were able to bring Robertson in for a staggeringly low price of £4.6m before he lit up the end of 2017/18.

In his final 13 appearances of the season, the Scottish international racked up a goal, four assists and a clean sheet, registering a mega-haul on the final day of the campaign to boot.

Starting the next season at £6.0m, Robertson still provided excellent value, held through all 38 Gameweeks by many in the Fantasy community as he smashed the all-time FPL score for a defender.

Knocking Joleon Lescott’s previous total off its perch, Roberston got to 213 by May 2019, combining 12 assists with 21 clean sheets and 29 bonus.

So, in less than three years, Robertson went from a sub-£5.0m defender to a £7.0m as one of the crucial pieces of the Liverpool puzzle in Fantasy Football.

CRISTIANO RONALDO

It’s been a long time but since Cristiano Ronaldo graced the Premier League with his presence, but we still fondly remember his final three seasons at Manchester United.

By the time the Portuguese superstar left Old Trafford, he had become an essential £14.0m midfielder who simply delivered (almost every week).

Ronaldo’s Fantasy dominance began in 2006/07, his fourth in Manchester. After 16 attacking returns in 2005/06, he flexed his muscles by finishing the next campaign with 17 goals and 15 assists.

That was enough to earn him the first of three back-to-back appearances in the end of season Dream Team.

The following year, Ronaldo hit a 31-goal season adding seven assists into the mix before providing a Red Devils swansong of 25 goal involvements in 2008/09.

During this period, Ronaldo was a lynchpin in our Fantasy teams. It was never quite Ronaldo and 14 other players, but even £14.0m was a price worth paying for someone who delivered as regularly as he did.

EDEN HAZARD

Eden Hazard is a true Fantasy great, who displayed exceptional explosiveness and longevity, even if his latter years in the Premier League were a little topsy-turvy.

The Chelsea midfielder hit double-figures for goals scored in five of his seven years in the English top-flight, scoring over 200 points on four occasions.

In fact, he appeared among the season’s top 10 FPL points scorers five times between 2012/13 and 2018/19, was in the top five players on four occasions, proving the outright top-scorer in 2014/15.

It was only Mohamed Salah that stopped Hazard from being the top-scoring player in his final year at Chelsea, in which he smashed his personal best score.

Scoring 16 goals and assisting another 15, the Belgian amassed a 238-point campaign, beating his previous record of 233 (2014/15) by five.

There were some in the Fantasy community, of which this author is one, who felt a little trolled by Hazard at times, perhaps accentuated by Chelsea’s changeable form from one season to the next.

2015/16 was a memorable one when the Blues even battled against relegation for a time, and clashes with Jose Mourinho saw Hazard produce just five goals and four assists.

There were similar issues with Antonio Conte in 2017/18, which led to a slow start before Hazard was able to arrest the slide a little with a 173-point campaign.

However, despite those blips, over the course of a seven-year stay in England, Hazard’s numbers are very impressive indeed.

TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD

What Liverpool win at Leicester means for FPL assets involved

Like his Liverpool colleague, Trent Alexander-Arnold experienced a rapid rise to the top of the FPL world.

It means that in a short space of time, the right-back has proved to be both an extreme budget differential defender, an arguably essential premium stopper and outside bet for captaincy.

Again, like Robertson, 2017/18 was the year that Alexander-Arnold arrived on the scene, scoring 83 points as a £4.5m defender.

2018/19 was his breakout year though. After starting at £5.0m, he broke the record for assists produced by a defender in a Premier League season with 13, ending it as a £5.8m option. That was even without playing the campaign in full, starting just 27 matches and outscoring Robertson in the latter half of his own record-breaking campaign.

What has been played of 2019/20 thus far has cemented Alexander-Arnold’s place in the history books though. After 29 Gameweeks, the right-back has already broken last season’s assist record, currently at 14. Furthermore, he went on a run of starts between Gameweek 14 and 27 when Alexander-Arnold went without a single blank, capping it off with a memorable 24-point haul at Leicester. That saw him register four attacking returns, a clean sheet and maximum bonus in one match.

Even more exciting is the fact that this young player is clearly at the very beginning of a Fantasy journey that, in five years time, could see him as one of the most reliable assets of all time. Hopefully, we’ll soon find out.

Record score for a defender. Surely that puts him above a great deal of picks. I'm torn. Trent is a cert here, but the other three is a good debate I'd say.

Ronaldo was an average pick in his final season but the 2 before were too good. Hazard with multiple 200 point hauls

Nah, CR7 and TAA for me.

Hazard may have had 4 200+ seasons, but having owned him for most of the last 3 seasons i remember going like 5 games without a return. TAA on the other hand for a def and only his 2nd full season has already been superlatively incredible, its only going to get better as he's what, still a teenager?

I find this group the toughest so far for sure...

Absolutely love TAA & Robbo - two of my favourite current FPL players

Robbo obviously has the highest score ever for a defender under his belt, and since returning from injury in GW26 last season TAA has been a man on a mission - In the 40 league games he's started since then he's accumulated a staggering 43 returns (18 clean sheets, 23 assists & 2 goals) - I think it's clear that we're going to see something special from an FPL perspective from TAA over the coming years if he can stay fit - he makes the cut for me, just, in front of Robbo

And CR7 - even though he may not have been consistently brilliant in FPL (Though he did hit the heights at times) watching him develop from a frustrating lightweight showboating show pony, with a hairstyle that looked like two dead scallions hanging from his fringe, who was literally laughed at in every away match for tripping over his own stepovers... to see him work obsessively for years on his left foot, right foot, heading, dribbling, crossing - every aspect of his game until he eventually became one of the greatest goalscorers of all time

Hazard, I'm less enthusiastic about, but he still did great things at times, and if you had the patience to deal with him, he invariably rewarded it.

If he hadn't had that weird season in 15/16 (The Jose out/Hiddink in year - he made 31 Appearances but didn't score a goal until late April & finished the season with only 4 goals & 4 assists!), and wasn't as prone to long droughts that tested patience levels he would possibly be viewed a lot more fondly by FPL managers

72 goals & 47 assists in the 5 seasons either side of the 15/16 debacle is not to be sniffed at... but CR7 managed 75 goals & 36 assists in just 4 seasons prior to departing for Madrid, and was obviously a class, if not two or three classes above Hazard ability-wise - so Ronnie gets the nod for me

TAA & CR7 go through - but its tough on Haz & Robbo

As there is no price factor in this competition, a forward/mid will.win hands .down. Same reason Ivanovic was out at expense of Persie, its CR7 and Hazard for this group.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years
        3 years, 12 months ago

TAA still gets chosen ahead of Hazard for me - but its tough on both Haz & Robbo - a tough old group... but TAA's step up since GW26 last year (his return from injury) has seen him produce elite-attacker levels of FPL consistency & explosiveness

Hazard's best ever FPL season was his last - where he notched 31 returns (16G & 15A) in 37 appearances... that was way above anything he managed in prior seasons

But even though Hazard knocked it out of the park in his last season - TAA has actually done better - notching 43 returns in his last 40 appearances (18 cleansheets, 23 assists & 2 goals)

I take the point about removing price - and Hazard also had 3 decent seasons out of the 4 before his last season, which is why its harsh on him...

But I still feel what TAA has achieved in such a short space of time makes him the better FPL asset - If i have to choose between the two I'd be picking TAA

As much as I love TAA and Andy, there is just no way you could put them ahead of the likes of Hazard & Ronaldo. Maybe if this was a young and up and commer FPL team world cup - this is the best of the best thus far in prem history. Get out you fullbacks

Very tricky. If I had to put together an actual FPL XI, TAA and Robbo would be almost certainly in there, whereas the other two would be touch and go. As you say, this is a world cup so perhaps a different approach.

With 3month lockdown in UK til June possibly extended to 6mnths till September, I think we may well have this season continue to next season, as again in flu season we will have lockdown with Coronavirus resurgence. Lot of matches left and fifa can probably get better planning for Euro 2021. Also justifiable rather than make this season void and put spanners in every teams efforts

Ultimately it'll all come down to which option gets the most money from the TV companies.

Personally, I reckon after 3 months of lock down everyone will be so bored that a festival of football behind closed doors to finish off the season in a couple of weeks will go down a treat. Imagine back to back games from 10am until 10pm every day for two weeks 🙂

Schools are likely to get reopened soon. Its not that big a stretch to allow professional sport to happen behind closed doors.

The relaxations will look at the age pf people involved and the rate of virus spread.

Just said the same to her indoors. Don't let the UK numbers fool you. A drop in numbers suggest that something is working, but if people start breaking quarantine today it'll just kick off again.

When the league is voided blame Boris, Mount and Grealish... Had the UK shutdown like other countries were then you'd be looking at getting back up by late April, league is going mid May.

Yes. Most points in 06 07 and 07 08 at an affordable price

Was the last season where he started at 14

Ronaldo was utterly essential on a level that very few have hit since which makes him, in my mind, an elite FPL asset.

        06/07 - 12m - 31 starts - 17G 14A - 244 points (1st for Midfielder pts, 2nd scored 202)
        07/08 - 14m - 31 starts - 31G 7A - 283 points (1st for Midfielder pts, 2nd scored 205)
08/09 - 206 points, 3rd for Midfielders. Don't have exact FPL stats for this season.

          Was 12m in 07 08

          Even cheaper in 06 07

          Even more essential

Yeah, i was thinking the same.

Eden was an epic troll at times but when you caught him on a purple patch he was electric.

    Who is this ?

I began my career as a defender
My career has taken me to clubs in all 4 home nations
My two league titles were won in Scotland
I stopped playing football professionally due to a genetic knee condition when at Reading FC.

        Yes it's wrong.

I will give you all another clue.

After his injury he worked in John Lewis, before becoming a football manager.

Why don't they just put defenders, mids and strikers into their own groups?

When voting i seem to be leaning towards players that played more advanced but this is unfair to the others.

      Yep, thought the same.
The world cup team will have 1 defender 5 mids and 5 strikers.
      .....and Sergio doesn't track back......

Yeah, most people are thinking along the same lines i guess.

Should be separate groups for the respective positions for better balance.

Aye maybe, but it's only a bit of fun without looking into it too hard.

If it was to actually mirror a proper World Cup then those defenders would be spread across all the groups as bottom seeds.

Mods, Admin, TM: Will these votes be filtered to one vote, two players, per profile? I voted for Kane and Lukau, Group C yesterday on my phone. On laptop today I still had option to vote for Group C so voted for Sigurdsson and Drogba out of curiosity to see if I could, rather than divilment! Is a second option to vote in same group being blocked out in some browsers or can it be.Obviously people with more than one account, for whatever reason, can skew results but most of us appreciate the FFS efforts to do something interactive and vote in the spirit of fairness.

If anyone is sad enough to go to the trouble of constantly adding extra votes via various accounts/devices, then they should probably get the result they want for their own sanity.

Get your player stats here, though not FPL stats, no baps, a good indicator.

    Christy Ronny is here: https://www.premierleague.com/players/2522/Cristiano-Ronaldo/overview

Not that we need it for FPL but all the way back to 92/93 season, when English football began 😉

Was doing some research earlier and reminded myself of what an ridiculous season Suarez had in 2013/14

Missed the first 5 games through suspension, listed as a forward with no penalties - 295 points!

      I'd argue that's a better feat than Salah's 303.

31 goals and 12 assists - blanked just 9 times in 33 games.

      Absolutely outrageous

12 assists? You're underselling him lad - he had 25(!) assists when you include Fantasy assists! Absolutely mental.

Not too proud to say I stubbornly stuck with just Sturridge for far too long that season, which really hurt me. Certainly would have smashed all the records if he hadn't been suspended for the first 5 games.

That Suarez season was unreal, some of the goals were out of this world. To get 31G+24a, not have pens and miss the start of the season is unreal.

Undoubtedly the best single season from a player in PL history, and imo, I don't think any comes close.

Very generous of the USA to be helping out badly affected country's in Europe when lots of their closest neighbors left them high and dry.The way Trump has mobilized the private sector in the USA to fight this is not to be sniffed at.Maybe you might need to have a rethink when one of those ventilators saves someone you love.

Why would you chose to believe these comments when all he's done is lie throughout this pandemic and to be fair the 50 years previous to this.

There's better ones on FB but this'll do though it misses some of the massive lies and his bile against journalists.

This is the guy who's bragging about his ratings as people die.

As someone living near the epicenter of this pandemic, let me tell you that Drumpf (his real name) is f'ing this up so badly, it boggles the brain. He downplayed it for weeks, said things were 'under control'...he has NO CLUE on what to do. We're woefully undertesting people and just yesterday he implied that nurses and doctors were selling the masks to the black market. NYC desperately needs supplies and ventilators and he isn't doing squat about it.
