Premier League postponed indefinitely but plans remain to finish 2019/20 season

The Premier League have acknowledged that the 2019/20 season stands no chance of resuming at the beginning of May amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

In a statement released on Friday, the Premier League announced that top-flight football will only return when “it is safe and appropriate to do so” and said that the restart date remains “under constant review”.

However, the league’s administrative body and its 20 clubs remain committed to seeing the current campaign through to a climax if and when Government and medical guidance permits it.

In their previous video conference a fortnight ago, Premier League clubs and the powers-that-be agreed on a temporary suspension of play until April 30.

A resumption at the beginning of May is a non-starter, however, and we are set for a considerably longer period of downtime than initially bargained for in mid-March.

Fantasy Premier League may follow suit with an announcement given that the Gameweek 36-38 deadlines are going to be affected in the same way as the six sets of fixtures before it.

FPL have so far been retaining the pre-scheduled Gameweek deadlines, with no fixtures taking place but the usual rules surrounding free transfers, points hits and head-to-head scores still applying.

The next deadline (Gameweek 32) is on Saturday morning at 11.30am.

FPL confirm deadlines for Gameweeks 31-35 will remain unchanged

There were other issues on the agenda at Friday’s meeting, including an agreement that clubs would consult their players regarding a 30% pay cut.

The league also unanimously voted to advance funds of £125m to the EFL and National League, with some clubs further down the football pyramid starting to struggle.

The Premier League committed £20m to support the NHS, communities, families and vulnerable groups during the COVID-19 pandemic, meanwhile.

The full statement can be read here, with the most pertinent passage concerning the restart below:

At a meeting of Premier League Shareholders today, clubs discussed in detail how to respond to the COVID-19 global pandemic.

First and foremost, it was reaffirmed that the overriding priority is to aid the health and wellbeing of the nation and our communities, including players, coaches, managers, club staff and supporters.

It was acknowledged that the Premier League will not resume at the beginning of May – and that the 2019/20 season will only return when it is safe and appropriate to do so.

The restart date is under constant review with all stakeholders, as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic develops and we work together through this very challenging time.

The Premier League is working closely with the whole of professional football in this country, as well as with the Government, public agencies and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the game achieves a collaborative solution.

With this, there is a combined objective for all remaining domestic league and cup matches to be played, enabling us to maintain the integrity of each competition.

However, any return to play will only be with the full support of Government and when medical guidance allows.

I've tweeted them but don't expect a response as it's not a 'name the mystery player with this FPL record'

"Trying not to make any comment on the severity of the situation and all the rest. Hypothetically if FPL 19/20 can continue, can you confirm whether or not the platform can support additional gameweeks GW39, GW40 etc? Or will anything remaining just be lumped into GW38?"

I'm not particularly bothered (despite being well placed for a decent cash sum if it finished as-is) but I just don't understand why they have let the weeks tick on. From a technical perspective, if they can just let people know that the game cannot support multiple game weeks, it would mean half of us can probably just drop any lingering thoughts of FPL.

It's well and truly at the back of my mind but given how invested everyone was for 30GWs (and lord knows how many hours) would be nice to have some temporary closure.

That feels like a tweet they probably just wouldn't respond to. More likely to get an announcement and perhaps an article to go with it rather than responding to an individual tweet.

Fingers crossed it can be finished along with the league, whenever that might be

FPL will only alter the game once there's a confirmed decision by the PL which won't be anytime soon.

Still can't believe the decision the FPL took to just continue with the game regardless of the fact that there were no Premier League matches being played and nothing to score.

They should have just frozen the game as soon as the first postponement was announced by the Premier League. Going to cause them a lot of issues having to rewrite the software to accomodated GW39, GW40, GW41 etc.

but that would be a bad decision as well, because we would be stuck with the same starting 11 for 9/10 matches without the possibility of getting points from the bench if any of our players get injured, turning FPL into a total injury lottery.

With thousands of people dying I don't see that any serious person is going to be bothered about that. FPL players have nowhere else to go really and will be back in droves next season.

Thousands of people die every day at any point in time. You should just stop everything you are doing in life and mourn for those who have passed away at any point in time then.

If they had frozen the game they would have had to write the code to freeze the game within around two days from Arteta getting confirmed to the next gameweek. They would then be left with all the game weeks with fixtures in the wrong order because who knows what order the fixtures will be rearranged. By letting the weeks play out, it would be easier to continue the season if it had resumed in say gw36. They have more time now to add the additional game weeks when they are confirmed. This should not be too difficult if the code is well written and I expect them to do it.

I also think that most of the game development would take place during the summer usually and they would hire developers on short term contracts for this and keep minimum development staff throughout the season.

I don't think football as we know it will be playable again until an actual vaccine is available

The strain was discovered in Nov'19 - so ~18 months from then would leave somewhere this time next year (In an absolute best-case scenario)

It's looking like such a serious situation - one bigger than single team, league or country - there's surely a staggering amount of clubs throughout the divisions that could go under when no TV money has been paid for 12-18 months - this could possibly be the end of football as we know it, could take years to get back to "normal", if ever

We might see return to 90's money in football and end of mega 100m+ deals.
What is worrying is how smaller clubs will manage to stay afloat during this crisis, I might be bit romantic about it but strongly believe that in a long run there cant be top football without grass roots one.

As for world in general - we will have to learn to live with the virus, lockdown can't last forever.

Many people will also need to reevaluate whats important for them in their lives.

I guess its even tougher on my wife - being all day on her own with 2 very energetic kids.
You could argue that my life\routine didn't change that much.

My thoughts are genuinely with you guys.

I’m lucky I am working from home and my wife has been furloughed on 80% pay.

I’d rather have 20% less money and know she’s staying as safe as she can be in this current situation, than have her going into her office with 20 other people every day.

Even though they were situating them at various different points in the office.

I hope you and your loved ones stay safe through this.

Thank you for you kind words.

I wanted to be furloughed but my boss said that I'm one of the critical people for the operation. Could always self isolate for 2 weeks but a) touch wood dont have genuine reason(yet) and b) 2 weeks and then what ?

80% with money saved on commute and feeling that I'm staying safe would be great but for me is not an option at the moment 🙁

          Take care.

As soon as you arrive home from work ignore everyone and head straight for the shower, put your work clothes aside from the rest of the family. Kids will always want huggies from Mam and Dad but reassure them they just need to wait a bit more now before you see them after work. Work helps I think, can talk to others and takes your mind off things.

Reckless are you home alone or sharing or with family? Open up the windows for a while and let some fresh air into your place. Set a daily routine and stick to it. Get out in the fresh air at least once a day and if not get some exercise with windows open to get some fresh air in your lungs, helps you sleep. Try not getting into a staying up until 4 in the morning watching movies routine, have a regular sleep pattern, good for the immune system. I was off for a few days the last few weeks, just cold symptoms, but I found the more I heard about COVID symptoms the more I imagined I might have them! If you're on your own ring family or friends to check in and let them know you're good. Physical illness is one thing but isolation not good for the head for me, easy to get fairly down if you dwell on things.

Stay well and happy everyone. FPL needs us 🙂

Same as you, but less. I'm in 2 weeks+. Not trying to think of 3

I like my work, but I'm trying to stick with the thought that there were a lot of times when I reckoned I needed some time off. Well this is it .. time for the wife & kids. Time & energy to read & engage in a book or pastime I wanted or one of the kids wanted. We may never get this opportunity again as we'll be busy doing other things like life.

I think coping is a plan and then daily trying to change it up/out to make it interesting. I've found exercise useful in keeping the mood up. Have a look P.E with Joe Wicks on YT. Kids love it & I'm into it myself - great laugh & burn of energy - think of how we'll all look in June 🙂

I started digging up some CDs and seeing how our two girls, 4 and 10 get on at musical history. Eased them in gently. Not impressed with Def Leppard, disbelieved the one armed drummer story. Like that the Housemartins sing about sheep and farmers but not impressed with their music. REM making a bit of impact. Can't see Metallica, Dylan, PJ Harvey, Pixies making an impression!

My son introduced me to Lil Nas X - Old Town Road ft. Billy Ray Cyrus. It's good & video is worth a watch on YT
I introduced him to Eminem - Stan. He liked it. I wasn't a fan, but it was popular at the time, and now welll ... we'll see
FUN, REM, some classical going down well so far. NOT big on the eagles AT ALL!

It would be a struggling to fit in the cups (including those in Europe) as well, maybe a north and south league would work better with a final between the winners. It would also help reduce the spread of the Coronavirus which is likely to be around again next winter.

When they finally restart, I can envisage 9 rounds of 10 matches equivalent to the GW's left.

Depends how quick they want to finish it, it could be done in 6 weeks, with 6 full GW's on weekends and 3 in midweek, along with midweek dates for the EFL Cup Final postponements, FA Cup QF's and SF's. Leave just the FA Cup Final, which could be played 6 weeks to the day after the season resumes.

No chance you will get Eriksen back (he wouldn't be interested in playing for Spurs anyway), I assume all records would be expunged (but it would be tight on the players, so theirs might stand), Son would be an interesting one.

This actually simplifies things for FPL.

Suspend FPL, add an additional wildcard to be used when games resume, all other chips remain. It was the rolling/uncertain nature that kind of kept FPL on this odd week-to-week thing, but now with games off for the rest of the season, they can just reschedule/restart. No need for super DGWs either.

BTW, this shouldn't be that difficult from a programming perspective either. Given that we've already seen the game add an additional wildcard before and can manipulate teams/schedules for BGWs/DGWs. I really think it was just this odd waiting game that generated the week-to-week weirdness...

The simplest thing for FPL to do is nothing - have one mega GW in 38 and no extra wildcards, chips etc. Why wouldn't they do that ?

But why would you take that approach when you can just make it "business as usual" whenever the season resumes/concludes? I don't see any reason to have a mega-GW when you can just re-slot all the matches into new GWs. The pile-up that had been going on was simply the result of the uncertainty of when the season would resume, not because one massive GW actually makes much sense.

"Business as usual" is actually having a mega GW though. Just by doing nothing and carrying on as normal will result in a massive GW.

They won’t do that as if kills interest in FPL if the season restarts - once 38 side is selected people will turn off for weeks. It’s in their interest to keep people interested in the game and logging into their accounts.

Pangolin anteater hosts a pathogen that is benign to him and the animals in his environment.

China's illegal wildlife trade comes along and trafficks the pangolin away from its natural environment and into a market full of humans for bogus medicine and sickening delicacies.

Humans then come into contact with a pathogen that is deadly to them.

Ouch not the best time to be graduating and starting a career in retail. Going to be a hopeless few years for some!

Any transfer you'd make to this team to use up one of 2 FTs? 0.8 itb, only BB chip left. Cheers.

    Pope, Button
    Ward, TAA, Stephens, Cathcart, Doherty
    Salah, KDB, Fernandez, Hayden, Saka
    Auba, Vardy, Jota

Thinking Ward out, probably for C.Taylor (because I've been considering all the alternative transfers for ages and head hurts)

Yeah, got Taylor in last week, maybe switch Hayden as well? Dendoncker?

Want to keep the third Wolves place open in case I want to double on Jota and Jimenez. what's wrong with Hayden as a 5th mid? Upgrade to better option for BB?

I don't get why some people think they should be given an extra wildcard. They know what fixtures have to be played, they've had several free transfers, they'll have several more, get on with it.

Agree. Any transfer you'd make to the above? Cheers.

Not sure Ward will stay fit or nailed so yeah. Saka obviously not but I'm delaying that sale myself as he's such a bargain if he is.

Controversial opinion: the goals imminent table doesn't tell you who is about to score.

It merely shows you which players have low shooting accuracy and poor goal conversion rate.

All stats, but no follow through.
