The players and teams to consider for Gameweek 4 of Virtual FPL

Gameweeks 2 and 3 of Virtual FPL were played out at the weekend, with Gameweek 4 set to take place on Tuesday evening.

In this article, we look back on the simulated action from Saturday and Sunday before previewing the next set of fixtures to take place.

For the uninitiated, Virtual FPL is a Fantasy game devised and developed by long-time friend of Fantasy Football Scout, Ragabolly (aka Live FPL).

Just over 2,000 teams were entered ahead of the Gameweek 1 deadline and a further 900-odd have been registered since then.

Anyone still wanting to get involved who hasn’t already registered a team can still sign up, with the full details of the game available via the link below.

Gameweek 2/3 Notes

(The full results from Gameweeks 2 and 3 are available via the Virtual FPL fixtures page or the game’s Twitter account.)

City in ominous mood

Manchester City top the Virtual FPL table with a 100% record after three Gameweeks, having scored on 11 occasions (four more than any other side) in their opening trio of fixtures.

They’ve achieved this despite having a tricky-looking start to the campaign: their first three games were against Spurs, Wolves and Manchester United, while Chelsea are up next.

While they are conceding chances for fun (more than any other team, in fact, in this simulated 2019/20 campaign), the calibre of opposition has made little difference to their threat at the other end.

Pep Guardiola’s side are ranked fourth for team attacks (see section below) in Gameweeks 1 to 3, despite having had one of the most difficult starts to the campaign.

Anyone without City representation will surely be planning a move or two, then, with the league leaders’ fixtures from Gameweeks 5-13 perhaps as good as any other side’s over the same timeframe.

With two goals, three assists and four bonus points already to his name, Kevin De Bruyne (£10.6m) is Virtual FPL’s leading scorer in terms of overall points.

De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling (£11.7m), Riyad Mahrez (£8.4m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.9m) are all ever-present starters in the City attack so far, while Leroy Sane (£9.3m) racked up a 15-point haul in Gameweek 3 to further his chances of another run-out on Tuesday.

The return from suspension of Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m), however, adds to virtual Pep’s options.

Wolves at the Door

Rivalling City for the toughest start in this simulated Premier League, Wolves have faced Chelsea, Spurs and Manchester City in their opening three fixtures.

We wrote about their free-flowing attack in our Gameweek 1 review and, after a bit of a stutter against Spurs, they were back with a bang in Gameweek 3.

While Wolves succumbed to a 3-1 defeat to Guardiola’s side, they nevertheless recorded more ‘attacks’ (35) than any other team has registered in a competitive Virtual FPL match to date.

Raul Jimenez (£8.1m) and Diogo Jota (£6.4m) are joint-first and third among FPL forwards for attacking involvements so far this season, with both players recording two vFPL returns apiece.

Up next for Wolves is a double-header at Molineux against Crystal Palace and West Ham United.

After two goals in his first three appearances, Matt Doherty (£6.3m) would be high on our watchlist too – but the Irish wing-back picked up an injury against City and is now out of action until Gameweek 8.

Five at the Back Fix

While we’re on the subject of Wolves, we can report a ‘fix’ that Ragabolly has rolled out recently.

In Gameweek 1, all 20 Premier League clubs started with four at the back.

Virtual FPL’s creator has since deployed a change so that teams that usually operate in a wing-back system in real life, such as Wolves and Sheffield United, are now also doing so in this simulated game.

Pukki On the Radar

Like the league leaders, Norwich City enjoy a favourable fixture swing in Gameweek 5.

A budget forward to monitor for that crossroads, if not before, is Teemu Pukki (£6.5m).

No forward has scored more goals (three) or been involved in more attacks than the Finn (29) so far this campaign, despite Norwich having faced stiff opposition in the form of Manchester United, Everton and Chelsea.

Marcus Rashford (£8.8m) is the only Virtual FPL forward who sits on more points than Pukki as things stand.

Back Against Newcastle

Pointless and 19th in the table, Newcastle United’s prospects look grim in Virtual FPL.

Of particular interest to us Fantasy managers is their attack, which is proving as blunt in this simulated world as it is in real life.

The Magpies have mustered only 16 attacks in total in this virtual season – by far the worst in the division and actually fewer than Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.8m) has been involved in individually.

Newcastle recorded only two attacks against West Ham in Gameweek 2, although did score from one of them.

Go Big in Midfield?
Metrics

Seven of the ten highest point-scorers in Virtual FPL so far, and four of the top five, are midfielders.

Only one forward, Marcus Rashford, features in that list, with premium strikers like Sergio Aguero and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) a little further back.

Favourable upcoming matches for City and Arsenal, of course, could change all that.

In terms of the ‘underlying stats’, a similar picture develops.

Six of the top ten players for attacking involvement are midfielders, including all of the top three: Bruno Fernandes (£8.5m), Sadio Mane (£12.4m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.7m).

Twenty players, including two defenders and nine midfielders, have been involved in more attacks than Aguero, meanwhile.

Bench Fodder Watch

For those Virtual FPL managers looking for playing budget options to pack the bench with or even start from time to time, there are some candidates emerging.

In attack, Andre Ayew (£5.1m) and Shane Long (£4.6m) have played all 270 minutes for their respective clubs so far.

John Lundstram (£4.8m) continues to rack up the attacking involvements (16 in all) as a Virtual FPL ‘midfielder’, as does Todd Cantwell (£4.8m), although the Norwich man was benched for one of the Canaries’ first three games.

For pure non-playing bench fodder to be used only in an emergency, Isaac Hayden (£4.3m) has started every Newcastle match so far.

At the back, Mason Holgate (£4.3m) is third among FPL defenders for attacking involvement – although did suffer a benching in Gameweek 1 and faces some tougher fixtures next.

Diego Rico (£4.2m) has started all three matches for Bournemouth and has already grabbed an assist but has been hauled off in two of those run-outs.

Charlie Taylor (£4.3m) is another cheap defender who has lined up in all three games for his club but no-one under Rico’s price has been an ever-present starter so far.

Tom Heaton (£4.3m) is the least-expensive goalkeeper who is currently getting a game between the posts but Angus Gunn (£4.2m) does return from suspension in Gameweek 4, so is one to monitor.

Tight at the Back

Liverpool are the success story of the simulated season at the back, having not conceded a single goal in their opening three matches.

Behind them on two clean sheets are Crystal Palace and Sheffield United.

The Eagles rode their luck in Gameweek 1, of course, with Neal Maupay (£5.7m) twice missing from the spot.

The Blades have been quietly impressive, much like in the real world.

Chris Wilder’s troops have conceded just once in this virtual campaign (against Liverpool on the opening weekend) and no side registered fewer ‘attacks against’ in Gameweeks 2 and 3 combined.

Three fairly favourable fixtures against Burnley, Norwich and Newcastle follow next, although all three are away from home.

Virtual FPL Premier League Table

Upcoming Fixtures

Arsenal and Liverpool’s fixtures look the most favourable over the next five Gameweeks, while Manchester City enjoy a fixture swing in Gameweek 5.

Everton’s next five matches are arguably the worst in the division, meanwhile.

Spurs now have three successive games on home soil, while Sheffield United are on the road in Gameweeks 4-6.

Team Attacks – For and Against

As hinted at earlier, we’ve put together a spreadsheet that details team attacks (both for and against) by Gameweek.

These are documented using the commentary in Virtual FPL.

The updated standings are below:

Injuries and Bans

Ashley Barnes (£6.1m) and Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) will both serve the final games of their three-match bans this evening before returning in Gameweek 5.

Davy Propper (£4.8m) and Issa Diop (£4.3m) were dismissed in Gameweeks 2 and 3 respectively and are also serving three-game suspensions.

Christian Atsu (£5.3m) has joined the injury list since our last round-up, as has Watford’s highest-scoring vFPL defender Craig Cathcart (£4.3m) – both of these players will be unavailable until Gameweek 7.

As we discussed earlier, Wolves will be without Doherty for the next four matches.

There are some players returning in Gameweek 4, however: Harvey Barnes (£6.2m), Jan Vertonghen (£5.2m), Sam Byram (£4.3m) and Angus Gunn (£4.2m) will all be available on Tuesday night.

Gunn’s return puts Alex McCarthy‘s (£4.5m) start in some doubt, although form – according to Ragabolly – is apparently a factor regarding team selection in Virtual FPL and the Southampton shot-stopper did keep a clean sheet in Gameweek 3 in his positional rival’s absence.

Rankings

Andy King remains top of the overall rankings while DeltaFox, who heads the Fantasy Football Scout mini-league, sits just three points behind him.

In total, four of the top ten Virtual FPL managers in the world are signed up to our mini-league: DeltaFox, Eddie Campbell, Burgerboy and gapester.

Liverpool Attacks By Team please ?

As someone owning Mane / Salah double up and questioning it everytime I look at my team, that info is absolutely critical 🙂

I started with both but decided to downgrade Salah to KDB and upgrade elsewhere.

Excellent article and every welcome as somebody who is planning to WC for the fixture swing.

PS Ayew is 5.1m in Virtual FPL (not 5.0), Taylor is 4.3m (not 4.2), Maupay 5.7 (not 5.8m)

    Great article.
Its nice to feel like FPL is back. I really enjoy it.

For me best players to own are TAA, Mane and Fernandes. Also great value is Wood. If you have enough cash than its worth investing in Alonso imo.
I have a big problem with City players. Sane brace put a spaner in the works and we will see big rotation there imo. I own Mahrez as he looked great in preseason but decided to sell (big haul this GW probably) as cant be sure he will start. Like in real life owning City player is a good idea but which one? KDB is more expensive but looks nailed.
As for strikers dont really like Auba pick. He doesnt fit my tram structure but most important there are cheaper forwards who can match him like Wood, Pukki or even Ings. My feeling tels me that Jota pick may be worth considering too and along with Fernandes he is joining my team this GW.

Will wait and see but there are 3 ways: pick KDB who is more expensive but nailed or pick one like Sane/Mahrez/Jesus and just stick even id he is benched or simply avoid.

How's this looking as WC ?

      Pope (Button)
      TAA, Egan, Soy, Ward, AWB
      Mane, KDB, Fernandez, Barnes (Hayden)
      Vardy, Jota, Wood

It's the D that is doing my head in, I'm not sure whether to go with the current 5 that rotate extremely well for the foreseeable future, or loss AWB, and use the MITB to upgrade Ward to PVA or Egan to Stephens (with MITB 0.9m to upgrade when necessary)

Thanks. It is very close to what I've got in real life FPL, the big difference is Wood instead of Auba. I can afford him with a 106m budget in that.

Personally I would downgrade Vardy (esp as you have Barnes) and upgrade AWB/Soy to Alonso.

My concern is how nailed Alonso is, given that he only started about 30% of real life Chelsea's games this season and this game is stats based.

So Mesut Ozil the most lazy underperforming player in the PL won’t take a 12.5% pay cut in these trying times.

He is already giving 100k a week in wages to help the less fortunate.

All it takes is a simple google search of 'Mesut Ozil charity work' to see that he does a hell of a lot to help out.

Shouldn't your question be why are footballers having to fund the NHS, instead of berating a man who already does a lot for charity and pays the highest tax bracket already?

Direct your fume to those who have put us in this position, not those who actually have helped out.

V-FPL set up for this gw.

    Pope (Button)
    TAA Stevens Robbo
    Bruno Grealish Mane Barnes
    Auba Jota Ings
    0itb 1ft

    A. Gtg
    B. Ings to Wood

Route to city after this week. Very tricky...
    1. Robbo+Fernandes (short term) to KDB+4.9 def
    2. Grealish+Auba to Pukki+KDB.
    3. Robbo+Grealish+Ings to Long+KDB+Gomez (-4)
    4. Robbo+Grealish+Ings to Ayew+KDB+4.9 def (-4)

What is your plan for BB in vFPL?

As TC or FH doesnt need to be really planned, BB needs strong 15 which means you will have a bit weaker (cheaper) starting XI later on.
I think most of us missed the trick and we could start with strong 15, than BB in one of first GWs and WC to "clean" the team later. From the other hand we didnt knew who is nailed etc. It doesnt really matter now so my idea is to build strong 15 using FTs (already made one move this GW and my cheapest attacker is 6.1), than BB and WC after that. I want to do it in near future to stop thinking about it. Also dont want a situation where I may need WC with BB still not used from the reason I wrote above. Its better to use FT to get players for BB than using em to clean the team imo - psychology 🙂

Playing casually is easier and more fun than you'd think. Just stop trying hard when you're feeling bad about it, does wonders for your mental health. Watch the games you like, have a bit of fun with some punts, and log on here minimally. Helps if all your mini leagues are also casual, though.

Yes I believe FPL has taken the joy out of watching football for me. Found myself upset more often than not on PL weekends this season, it's hard to enjoy when so many goals, assists and clean sheets are bad for your OR.

    Suggestions for Vfpl team:
I have mount in my team who has done nothing lmao.
A Play either Shane long or Bednarek (Choose one)
B Remove mount get in Harvey Barnes for -4
C Remove Mount and long for Jota and Lundstram for -8 Thanks !

Looking at Neale's spreadsheet, the worst five teams for conceding chances are:
    - team, chances conceded, (goals conceded)

    Arsenal 52 (3)
    Chelsea 55 (4)
    Wolves 57 (8)
    Man Utd 59 (5)
    Man City 74 (3)

    What's going on there?

And apart from Wolves, there doesn't seem to be a big correlation between chances/attacks conceded and goals conceded...

Wondering if I should do Alonso to Gomez, but are the fixtures really that bad for Chelsea? Thinking double Liverpool defence might be a good way to take advantage of their nice run.

It's all about how clinical the opponent is. Some teams are very wasteful, many attacks but not as many actual shots, and goals

I guess some of that is fixture-related - City and Wolves had perhaps the toughest opening three games, while United faced City and Leicester. Might see those standings improve when the fixture difficulty improves?

I thought before on the transfers page attacking involvement didn't show all the attacking involvements. I think I got confused from reading this http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/21827232

Yeah that's true-ish. I didn't save the full attack data for GW1, so for GW1 I only included the most involved players. Then GW2 and GW3 stats are complete. So now the total will always be missing a few attacks from GW1 but shouldn't be a big deal. Hope that makes some sense.

Attacking involvements are in the match reports. Kinda bettwr for me that way. You see a player with 20 attacking involvements and that looks good nut could be skewed by 12 in GW1 and very little after that. Attacking involvement not a great pointer to points for some players. I got Cantwell for Hayden because he had decent involvement, but little return 🙁

Seems fairly true to life! Thinking about xG, teams with good underlying numbers normal improve their goals total over a decent period of time (10 to 20 GWs) so hopefully Cantwell will improve for you soon!

1FT 1.4 ITB - any vFPL transfer suggestions? Cheers 🙂

Going to want some City guys in next wk.
Mount has been the biggest disappointment so far - he was electric in my preseason friendlies 🙁

    Henderson
    TAA Alonso Mina
    Salah Mané Bruno Mount Lundstram
    Jota DCL

    (Button Webster Greenwood Masina)

Presume you will be swapping either Salah or Mane for KDB next week,as you have stated mount has been poor so swap him for Barnes

      TAA is a budget killer.

The problem I have with him is that his starting price is £7.8m.

In FPL most of us got him when he was £7.0m. Buying him nearly £1m more seriously eats into what you can afford for the rest of your team.

I got VVD because he’s £1.2m cheaper, but if the sim keeps giving Trent CS and assists and VVD nothing then I may have to WC early and get TAA in.

My team is/was very similar. Same structure with TAA+Alosno, double Liv mid, light attack.
I did Salah > KDB. First thing is Salah + Mane make team a bit too weak as things look at the moment. We have WC and no price changes so can easy watch how it works for few GWs and than can change it.
As for City its tricky. Players attacking returns makes them more nailed so after Sane brace I expect a rotation plus Jesus is comming back soon so KDB may be best pick or simply take Mahrez/Sane and accept the odd bench.

I would make Salah > KDB and than one of those:
      1. upgrade Mount to Alli/Martial/Mahrez
      2. Greenwood > Pukki/Wood and prepare team for BB soon

Did Vardy and Richarlison to Tielemans and Auba (c) last night with my 2 FTs.

    May WC after GW5 too.

Just did willian and Auba to Jota and KDB with my 2ft, looking at using BB sooner than later possibly before 1st WC or after not sure yet . My thinking is to get it the way sooner than later to use all funds on first 11
      Cheers

I need to WC before I BB as my bench won’t get me diddly squat (Button, Lascalles, Hanley, McCarthy).

I have Jota at the moment, but think Jimi is going to start raking in the points and leave Jota far behind.

Chelsea look to be very sporadic in this version. Barkley kills it in my friendlies, but I wouldn’t gamble on him in the real simmed games.

If Tammy was scoring that would help.......

Also got las and Hanley all other players ok and have a 1 mil in bank after the fts so will next change Hanley out and depending how Newcastle fixtures go could possibly do an early bench boost , like I said still looking at it.
Enjoying this format no end and is a great distraction from every day Life which I think we all needed .

    Bruno, Vardy, Auba

The one I’d want is KdB, but that means losing Bruno, which I wouldn’t recommend.

Maybe Vardy to Kun if funds allow?

I don't have much money to play with. Maybe I could lose Grealish for someone cheaper - Villa still have a few good fixtures but he hasn't had the impact I would have liked.

Hey Rag, if you're around just one suggestion. If two players have the same surname in the same position but for different clubs, could you possibly add their first initial? For example, "C. Taylor" and "N. Taylor"

Ragabolly - Are players suspended if they are on loan from another premier league club when these teams meet?. Example of this is will the Sheffield United Goalkeeper Henderson be suspended in GW12 when the fixture is against his parent club Manchester United.
