What does the latest government update mean for the Premier League and FPL?

The UK government have laid out some detail on when the Premier League could return to action.

On Monday afternoon, they published a 50-page guidance document on how England will ease the lockdown measures currently in place, following the outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19).

‘Step Two’ of that plan includes “permitting cultural and sporting events to take place behind closed doors for broadcast, while avoiding the risk of large-scale social contact”.

There remains no confirmation of a fixed date for the return of the Premier League, although the government has provided some criteria that need to be satisfied first.

‘Step Two’ of their lockdown easing plan cannot be allowed to start until June 1 at the earliest, and only when ‘Step One’ has been executed satisfactorily.

As things stand, that would still keep the Premier League on target to complete ‘Project Restart’ in time for the previously discussed date of June 8, although this government update is a reminder that the country’s rate of infection could play a part.

“To aid planning, the Government’s current aim is that the second step will be made no earlier than Monday 1 June, subject to these conditions being satisfied. Until that time the restrictions currently in place around the activities below will continue.” – Extract from The UK Government’s COVID-19 recovery strategy

“The content and timing of the second stage of adjustments will depend on the most up-to-date assessment of the risk posed by the virus. The five tests set out in the first chapter must justify changes, and they must be warranted by the current alert level.” – Extract from The UK Government’s COVID-19 recovery strategy

The government’s latest announcement acts as an official confirmation of the fact that any Premier League return will occur after the Gameweek 38 deadline on Sunday, May 17.

We are still waiting for an update on what this means for the remaining FPL fixtures, as 92 of them will need to be played after the passing of the Gameweek 38 deadline if the season is to complete.

Meanwhile, the government document states that reopening Premier League and other football stadiums to crowds, “may only be fully possible significantly later depending on the reduction in numbers of infections”.

The announcement comes after Boris Johnson addressed the nation on the evening of Sunday, May 10.

As promised, there is more detail in this new document on issues communicated to the public on Sunday.

For those who want to read the document, YOU CAN DO SO HERE.

Hopefully this will prompt FPL into making another announcement regarding future GW,'s but I wouldn't bet on it given that they have already put out a statement that includes GW38.

It says that "Given each fixture in these Gameweeks (which includes GW38) has been postponed, all players will earn zero points.", so that GW has been covered. So I wouldn't be at all surprised if we don't hear any more from them until we know more about how the seasons fixtures are going to progress.

Looks as if the PL are set to backtrack on their neutral grounds plan, presumably due to a lack of support?

The Independent have already reported that voiding the season remains completely off the table.

"The Football Association has told the Premier League clubs that the season must be settled by “sporting merit”, potentially splitting the six bottom clubs over how to finish the season.

It means that issues like relegation or the title must be settled by either playing the remaining fixtures, or a formula like points-per-game."

From an FPL perspective, they have six days to work out what to do. My hunch is that we'll probably not find anything out, the deadline will come and go with no advice, then 3 weeks later we'll be wondering whether or not the first matches will result in any points scored. I'm seriously considering playing my bench boost just in case.

They have to communicate in advance of deadline. The game shouldn't be about guessing which fixtures fall in which gameweek - that'll just turn people off the game. It's not in their interests to do that.

I agree on an integrity perspective. But if that is the case they will need to get their finger out if its going to be extra GWs (unless work is happening now in the background)

I have a suspicion though that FPL won't be adding game weeks after 38 ... :). Just a hunch.

As a BB chip holder I hope for a mega 38...but I also think it will be an unfair advantage. Maybe they would limit a BB/TC chip to only 2 consecutive fixture batches somehow if mega 38 happened.

It is totally unfair. But I TCd Mane and WCd for the Man City/Arsenal DGW so it'd be nice to be on the right side of totally unfair for a change.

The reward is huge compared to the risk.
With a 92 match gameweek 38, that could be 100+ points from the bench.
The risk I guess is wasting the chip which might have scraped you an extra 20 points in a double game week.

The Football Association has told the Premier League clubs that the season must be settled by “sporting merit”, potentially splitting the six bottom clubs over how to finish the season.

It means that issues like relegation or the title must be settled by either playing the remaining fixtures, or a formula like points-per-game.

Voiding the season remains completely off the table.

The announcement came at the very start of Monday’s crunch videoconference, and immediately took some of the expected tension out of the meeting. The Independent has been told that the FA’s hand was forced by the amount of politicking over ‘Project Restart’ in the last few weeks, and felt the need to act.

Good timing, right before I could put it up 😆

Nothing too surprising here I think. With UEFA saying that UCL entry had to be decided on performance from this season, either PPG or a restart looked incredibly likely.

Really interesting. I'd hate to see the season voided. Somehow they have to decide on how to deal with positions 4-8 and the bottom 6. Maybe it will come down to a play-off. It feels unlikely that the European tournaments will restart soon.

Looks like the UK government has passed the buck back to the PL.

I think secretly lots of the PL officials were hoping that the government would do their dirty work for them but no politician is stupid enough (especially Boris) to make what's going to be a very unpopular decision either way in some circles.

Leaving aside for a moment that this decorated veteran withdrew his plea what exactly was his crime, what was the evidence and who instigated the investigation?

Does this not make you worried as a US citizen and a human being the way this man was set up and the motive for doing such a thing or does political partisanship outweigh justice in the USA now?

If you think he was guilty of anything well then that contradicts what Comey,Clapper,McCabe,Strzok,Page and many more of the top brass were saying there was no case but still set him up and went on their political witch hunt thereafter.

This is a huge scandal and shakes faith in US justice to it's core.

Golf courses in Virginia have remained open with certain stipulations, namely social distancing and no touching flag sticks, etc. Furthermore, stay-at-home directives encourage getting outside for exercise, with the proper caveats. I have walked, hiked, or biked everyday since the plague started.

Weather it's Obama,Trump or whoever i don't see a problem with someone going out and doing some recreational activity as long as they try and maintain best practice in social distancing.

What scares me just as much as the virus is the way some people want to make others prisoners in their own homes. It's like they want to punish them for something that's not their fault.

I am a keen angler and the rules here in Ireland at the moment is that you can't go outside 5km form you home unless it's "essential".Now i live in a rural county with loads of pristine secluded beaches but i happen to live more than 5km away from the closest one so if i went out fishing for the day then i would be risking falling foul of the law.

Considering that there is little or no chance of me coming into contact with anyone unless i run into one of the many Garda checkpoints around at the moment then i think stopping someone playing golf, biking, hiking or whatever is very daft as long as they are keeping up best practice which everyone around here at least is being very good about anyways.

i certainly wouldn't I'm just saying there's no way there'll be no footy till there's a vaccine so what difference does it make whether they start in 2 weeks or 2 months

Could be a massive difference. You'd hope that in 2 months the R will be much lower than it will be in 2 weeks.

Feels set for a mega BB if a massive 38 occurs?

    Pope / McCarthy
    TAA / Saiss / Fernandez / Baldock / Dunk
    Salah / KDB / Bruno / Martial / Son
    DCL / Jimenez / Ayew

I will be playing 352 most weeks..

Really sick and tired of Sky reporting comments from Football people with quite obvious agendas.

Tony Stewart the chairman of Rotherham says he doesn't see Leagues 1 and 2 starting. Where are Rotherham? second in league 1 behind Coventry, just 2 points ahead of 3 teams. So if the league is voided who are the teams likely to be given promotion?

Newsflash; everyone has an agenda, even midtable clubs will want the most lucrative option for them rather than what's right for sporting integrity. Just because the Rotherham chairman wants promotion doesn't mean he's wrong. It's difficult to see any league below the prem completing, sucks

There's currently only 1 GW left. Unless there is something said about GW38, it will be another blank GW. Either GWs get added if PL returns or FPL is over imo.

Even if (and a big if in my opinion) they go the mega GW38 route I'd imagine they would give managers the opportunity to set their teams up, perhaps by moving the deadline. It would be a highly controversial move if they didn't and simply took teams as they are set up this Sunday. Feels risky to activate a chip on what is currently still set as a blank game week. I'm going to hold and hope for news.

It's going to be controversial in any case i guess. If the games do get played eventually, we should get FPL too though. Fingers crossed.

I certainly think it's more risky to activate a chip than not. FPL have stated GW38 is blank and players will score 0 points (they could go back on this of course). They've also clearly said chips used in these 'blank' weeks will not be reinstated.

I actually think one of the most likely outcomes is FPL will end on Sunday, regardless of what happens in real life. They are under no obligation to complete the game. Some people think they will simply leave GW38 'open' so that they can add all the fixtures in at some point. Some people think they could add more game weeks. Until we hear off FPL we just don't know.

It is probably manic within the Premier League management structure, they are having a meeting one day about all sorts of problems in relation to politics, life & death issues etc and some geek raises his had and says ‘the Fantasy Premier League last game week finishes next week, what are we going to do?’ ... umm ... silence ... until someone shouts ‘shut the front door’ and throws his out the window 🙂

Whenever I've contacted FPL they always give the impression they are a separate entity, or at least a seperate department. It could be the case whoever works on FPL isn't actually in work currently.

            You're probably right.
But with advertisement money, global appeal & so many people who keep asking questions about it, I don't think they will just put FPL down as useless thing.

I think it's FPL's decision to not change deadlines.

I am an addict. But the thing that i have missed 3 deadlines on the spin & was thinking that this was GW 37 deadline upcoming, i am not sure how many are even looking at FPL website atm.

I post here because of love for this community (as for others too) but don't think many people are doing anything re FPL.

If they reduce the threshold transfers needed for price changes it might have a dynamo effect on the game hence they might be reluctant to do that..

I'm happy with the rest of my team structure, but you never know with injuries and stuff.

Not spent ages looking to be fair but given there's no dgws in vfpl i reckon the value of the 2nd wc diminishes. Using my 1st wc to gst a nice bb then using 2nd one to restructure. Enjoying the distraction cheers Ragabolly

I've just realised. The only reason people were asking if there will be a mega 38 is so they could use their WC and BB and rake in the points if the scenario happened. What a bunch of selfish so and so's, 😀
