Martial injured as De Bruyne blanks again in Virtual FPL

We preview Thursday’s action and look back at what happened in Gameweek 20 as we bring you our latest round-up of Ragabolly’s Fantasy management game.

FRENCH TOAST

The best-value Virtual FPL midfielder this season (based on points per million) is now out of action for the next six Gameweeks.

Anthony Martial (£8.0m) was taken off after just 20 minutes of Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with Leicester City on Tuesday and won’t return until Gameweek 27.

The Frenchman had registered nine goals and five assists in his previous 12 appearances for the Red Devils.

Marcus Rashford (£8.8m) blanked for the fifth match in a row and for the eighth time in ten Gameweeks in that stalemate with the Foxes.

LEAKY LILYWHITES

Tottenham Hotspur simply can’t keep a clean sheet.

The Lilywhites have recorded fewer of those than any other side in this simulated season, with their solitary shut-out coming away at bottom-of-the-table Bournemouth in Gameweek 10.

Even shot-shy Newcastle United, who have scored fewer goals than any other team in Ragabolly’s game, found the back of the net twice when the clubs met on Tuesday.

Serge Aurier (£5.0m) is pretty much the only Spurs defender worthy of consideration at present but only because of his exploits at the other end of the field.

The Ivorian, who returns from injury on Thursday, has recorded more attacking returns (nine) than all vFPL defenders bar Liverpool’s two full-backs and enjoys a fixture against leaky Norwich City in Gameweek 21.

Beyond that, though, matches against Manchester City, Wolves, Chelsea and Manchester United don’t bode well for the Lilywhites’ backline.

BLANK DE BLANK

After delivering attacking returns in 13 of the first 14 Gameweeks of the season, Kevin De Bruyne (£10.6m) has now blanked in four of his last six appearances.

The Belgian’s attacking involvements have also dropped off: he is averaging 4.7 of those over the last six Gameweeks, compared to 8.1 before that.

Still the second-most-owned player in vFPL, chances are the blip may be a temporary one.

This may simply have been a levelling off after a remarkable run in the first third of the campaign, with his conversion rate standing at a very high 17.5% after Gameweek 14 (most players are at 15% or under, with plenty of the big guns closer to the 10% mark).

The fixtures don’t look great over the next four Gameweeks but De Bruyne did rack up 31 points in the reverse fixtures.

Top Marx(G)

The indefatigable TopMarx has been hard at work again, adding more features to the team attacks spreadsheet he maintains.

The latest is “Virtual xG”, which uses fixture difficulty to work out how many goals a team is expected to score/concede based on the averages we have seen so far this season.

The above table ranks teams by their forecasted goals tally in the next six matches, with Liverpool, unsurprisingly, heading the pack.

The VxG tab can be found on the usual attack counter spreadsheet.

GREEN MEANS GOALS

A fair bit of research has gone into team attacks this season, with fixture difficulty seemingly making little difference to how many chances a team carves out in any given game.

There is, however, a definite disparity when it comes to actual goals scored.

TopMarx – who else – has produced the above table in conjunction with his VxG feature, which shows that most teams (bar Newcastle and Southampton) are finding the back of the net more often in the easier (green) fixtures than the tougher (red) ones.

Just out of interest, Aston Villa are the team who enjoy the most ‘green’ fixtures (four) over the next six Gameweeks. The talismanic Jack Grealish (£6.5m), who has played a part in half of Villa’s goals and who has scored twice in the last two Gameweeks, might be worth another look over this run, then.

Look for the ‘Goals’ tab in the usual spreadsheet for more information.

STATS TABLES

TopMarx’s spreadsheet that details team attacks (for and against, home and away) has been updated after Gameweek 20 and can be viewed here.

The interactive player stats spreadsheet has also been refreshed after the latest matches, meanwhile.

The stand-alone spreadsheet can be accessed via this link, with Fantasy managers able to make their own copy by selecting “File>Make a copy”.

INJURIES AND BANS

Aside from Martial, there were four other fresh injuries to report from Tuesday.

Adam Smith (£4.3m), Jan Vertonghen (£5.2m), Daniel Podence (£5.1m) and Dan N’Lundulu (£4.5m) will be out for between three and six weeks, with their exact return dates to be found in the table above.

Harry Wilson (£5.8m) begins a three-match ban after being shown a red card in Gameweek 20, meanwhile.

Along with Aurier, a number of other players return on Thursday.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.3m), Mario Vrancic (£6.2m) and Jorginho (£4.9m) are back from injury, while Sean Longstaff (£5.0m) and Matej Vydra (£5.3m) are available after suspensions.

RANKINGS

Fábio Borges is a comfortable 42 points clear of the chasing pack in the overall standings and in our Fantasy Football Scout mini-league, with Joe Gunbie in second in both.

Three of the managers above played their second Wildcard at the first possible opportunity.

There was a notable new entry into the top ten overall rankings: Hrobjartr, who rises to ninth, hasn’t used a single transfer or chip and has kept the captaincy on Salah all season.

Elsewhere, Greyhead and elfozzie stay at the summit of the Great and the Good and the Mods and Cons leagues respectively.

Got rid of TAA for Alonso and brought in KDB as form dictated this was the way to go (a few weeks back). Strange how these things work out.

As a side note, there doesn't seem to be a decent time to use the free hit or bench boost chip does there?

I used free hit in GW City had Norwich at home (because I didn't have any City players). Got KDB, Sane and Kun in and got lucky. This is one way of using it. Pick a week big scoring teams have plum fixtures and load up.

You could try what I did earlier - use your WC to get in some good players while also setting up a BB for the following week.

This is what I did,WC last GW and BB today, will have to downgrade 2nd keeper and 5th mid in the future but will deal with this over the next few GW.

I had a look at the remaining fixtures, and I thought that GW29, GW34 or GW38 looked reasonable enough for the FH chip:

In GW29, you've got LIV v AVL, SOU v MCI, TOT v BOU, MUN v WHU, WOL v ARS and CHL v SHU.

In GW34, you've got WOL v LIV, MCI v AVL, WAT v TOT, BRI v MUN, ARS v WHU and CHL v BUR.

In GW38, you've got LIV v EVE, MCI v CRY, TOT v LEI, MUN v AVL, SOU v ARS and CHL v NEW.

I haven't been playing vFPL but I'm interested how 'fair' or 'random' it equates to normal FPL in those who have been playing it.

Do you feel that a computer being 'random' with its choices (obviously even though it is based on past statistics to influence how it choose things) is more random than real life where a player could pull up at any time or skew a shot, or is it less random or basically the same?

I'd think it is a good example of how random real life is personally, and what luck is needed to often get the big points.

    1. GreennRed
      • 12 Years
      3 years, 10 months ago

For me team results are more predictable, close to the VPL fixture difficulty table, less upsets than FPL. But player performances are less predictable, the likes of Neto, Pulisic, Zaha, Perez doing better than FPL, but their runs of form are shortlived so then jump horse to the next form horse.

I could get into a big rant/discussion about how nothing in life is random but I'll leave that for another day. 😀

I guess in theory you could literally predict everything that is going to happen in vFPL if you had the time and know how, but I guess those playing the game won't have access to the details they need in order to drill down that far, so for all intents and purposes it's just as 'random' as real life. Luck playing a major factor.

Aside from the algorithm's randomness, there are two aspects of the Virtual FPL game that make it a lot more exciting for me.

The first is the lack of price changes. It means you can easily sell a big hitter without losing value on them, and you won't need to do much to bring them back. The second is that there are no BGWs or DGWs. It enables us to have more fun with the chips.

I decided for a laugh in vFPL (was only setting up a team for the hell of it) to TC Jack Grealish at home to West Ham.

He was sent off after 26 minutes.

While that 'might' happen, what do you think the actual chances of that happening are in the real game?

So I know the players I want, but it's a matter of timing as to when I want to bring them in. So which option is best?

    A. Sane to Son now, Son and DCL to Grealish and Vardy in 22 (-4)
    B. Sane to Son now, Son to Grealish in 22, DCL to Vardy in 23 (free)
    C. Keep Sane this week, Sane and DCL to Grealish and Vardy in 22 (free)

Leaning towards B because DCL has a great fixture in 22 that I wouldn't want to lose him for. Thoughts?

The Real Virtual Fantasy Premier League
    set to resume tonight.

I WCd last week, made 70+ but my rival almost got top score (89).

He has double pool defence and i fear that they are such good value but just too boring to me. i cant explain it properly but its like a necessary revolution for me to go without them.
i have double Sheffield and hope not to lose too much ground or say that my Mane can make up for it.

    Have Grealish Mane Salah Fernandes
    DCL Ings Vardy
    up top the English revolution

Vardy C at home to Everton or Mane at Bournemouth (away)?

    Pope
    TAA / Robertson / Alonso
    Salah / KDB / Fernandes / Snodgrass
    Jota / Ings / DCL

    Button // Ward / Hayden / Targett*

Both play opponents who typically score well:

    1) Play Alonso (MCI) or Ward (WOL)?

KDB off form, and potentially Snodgrass too (although West Ham predicted goals in the coming weeks?... https://twitter.com/TopMarx_FPL/status/1263518879378296833?s=19)

    A) KDB/Snoddy > Grealish/Trossard (-4)
    B) KDB > Grealish/Trossard & play Snoddy

I kinda have one eye on MCI vs TOT next week, and wonder if a City attacker is worth having since they're so leaky. Not sure if worth it given surrounding fixtures, however.

Nah not enough for a Trossard straight swap unfortunately. I'm more worried by Sané than KDB at the moment - so not beholden to keeping him.

Thank you. I'll probably play Alonso. Chelsea not terrible at the back, he's involved in attacks at least & Wolves are scoring too well anyway.

Just got my vfpl team bench sorted with a second to go but i had no time to make a transfer so it has been burned unfortunately. 🙁

If he could that'd be fab, but I'll live with my mistake if I have to.

        Team ID 14

Was supposed to be Ward 1st on bench, with Trossard playing.

Sold Snoddy & just believe I did not save the starting XI swap.

He's a defender, but he basically got no playing time as in real life the Sheffield starting defence is performing too well.

It's a "midweek" injury meaning it has nothing to do with the game.It happened later in the week.

Hey Ragabolly, would you kind looking at my post above?

If not no worries at all, I can live with the mistake. At least you can tell I'm telling the truth from my earlier transfer option post 😆

Took a hit for TAA this GW. It’ll pay off overall, but not this GW.

      Oh well...

Might be a good week to cap Trent v SHU.

10 AI this GW, more than any other pool player.

Mate of mine took a hit to bring TAA in this week too.
        This hurt him a little:
        - Auba to Vardy (8pt loss)
        - VVD to TAA for a hit (11pt loss)

19pts worse off than if he'd done nothing.
I can't talk though - he still beat me by 15 this GW!

Some great games today; Chelsea winning 4-2 at City, Newcastle and Norwich upsetting the odds. First time I've really missed the real thing....

Norwich was always likely to win this one without Alli Bergwijn Kane Lloris and at home and Ncastle even won in real life at home vs United. X is on the money.
Only complete shocker was Chelsea and Arsenal 3-0 😉

i have the same team almost o.O

I have Vardy instead of Deeney and Alonso Simpson Ryan Button Amartey instead of Webster TAA Lund and keepers but same two Sheffield Defenders + Holgate and 7 out of 8 starting attackers!
      Thats highly similar.

I d say your team is more balanced but Vardy gives me another CaptaincyOption
