Premier League confirm June 17 as return date following suspension

The Premier League have confirmed that the competition will “provisionally” return on Wednesday, June 17.

The first two fixtures to take place will be the outstanding games in hand as of the coronavirus suspension back in March.

To be played on the evening of June 17 are:

  • Aston Villa v Sheffield United
  • Manchester City v Arsenal

The news was reported by the Telegraph and BBC following a key Premier League meeting on Wednesday afternoon.

However, this information now carries the full ratification of the top-flight as well.

“Today we have provisionally agreed to resume the Premier League on Wednesday 17 June. But this date cannot be confirmed until we have met all the safety requirements needed, as the health and welfare of all participants and supporters is our priority. Sadly, matches will have to take place without fans in stadiums, so we are pleased to have come up with a positive solution for supporters to be able to watch all the remaining 92 matches. The Premier League and our clubs are proud to have incredibly passionate and loyal supporters. It is important to ensure as many people as possible can watch the matches at home. We will continue to work step-by-step and in consultation with all our stakeholders as we move towards resuming the 2019/20 season.” – Premier League statement

The weekend of June 19/20/21 is set to be the first full programme of football, with matches on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

As things stand, we do not know which matches will be played on that weekend, or indeed when the next FPL deadline will be.

Crucially, we do not know if the midweek fixtures on June 17 will comprise a very small Blank Gameweek or form part of a Double with the following weekend’s matches.

However, we now have more confirmation about the time slots used for matches.

Weekend matches will be scheduled as follows (all times BST):

Friday 20:00
Saturday 12:30, 15:00, 17:30 and 20:00
Sunday 12:00, 14:00, 16:30 and 19:00
Monday 20:00

Midweek matches will be scheduled as follows (all times BST):
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 18:00 and 20:00

I was just about to say the same! I was in the middle of typing a different message.

Can't see a statement but it's like the start of a season with 15/15 players selected and 3.7 ITB.

Doesn't say a wildcard is active. Best to take advantage of this situation? Assume there will be a statement soon...

Feel a slight mug for saving my WC and chipping away at my squad with transfers during lockdown!

Got excited for a moment there.

Intrigued to see how the fixtures work out, how the chip strategies will unfold.

I think my mental healthy benefited from an FPL break but football's return is at least a step towards some kind of normality.

Eagerly anticipating what FPL Towers will have to say next...

    vFPL:

    A) Alonso/Salah/Jota >> Laporte/KDB/Firmino (-8)
    B) Alonso/Salah >> Laporte/Mané (-4)
    C) Salah >> Mane

A is high risk, high reward. B is a bit more sensible, but Chelsea have been keeping CS. C is safer.

Just C for me. I have done Salah to Mané move and wondering if should take -4 for DCL to Jiménez?

Jimenez is a sensible long-term move, so I wouldn't personally regret that move too much, even if DCL scored.

I'm certainly no-where near Top 10, or even Top 100 for that matter 😆

Mane is a safety blanket with the EO these next two weeks I suppose.

Amazon Prime I wasn't expecting that I thought they had already had the full quote of 20 matches they paid for in the 2019-20 season so wouldn't get anymore.

It looks that way, I was offered a free month of prime this time last month and took it for the movies. Looks like that was mistake now, I should have held out until the PL resumed and took it then to watch that for free as well. I expect Sky/BT will get the pick of the games however, so probably not a biggie.

BBC only originally paid for highlights, and Amazon have already had the 20 PL games they paid for. So I presume that Sky and BT will get the picks of the games each GW (which will be the most appeal matches), and the rest will be on BBC/Amazon.

Whatever your team is now, assume you keep it. FTs have rolled on as usual, so can't see why they would reset. Although minimal, price changes have already occurred. Whilst they could reset that too - can't see it happening.

Do FPL fill you with confidence that they’ll add GW’s 39-47?

I’m hoping they do, reasonably confident they will, but under no illusions that they possibly won’t either

            1. No Kane No Gain
              • 5 Years

If they were going to end the season in fpl terms, they would have done it by now. They obviously couldn’t say much because they had no idea when or if the fixtures were to resume.

More gameweeks and more games mean more people will use their website over the summer, plus the other advantages this comes with. Why would they refuse this?!

Have FPL game weeks been running as originally scheduled, so people have been re-shaping their teams the past 10 weeks with 1FT each week? I've not given FPL a moment's thought since the games were stopped and lockdown.

Btw I'm pretty sure you can get BT Sport free for 3 months on EE.

How are you getting BT for £5? They want to charge me £15.

Which I’ll still pay. After two months of watching shows like Tenable, and the father brown mysteries, I’d remortgage my house to watch Norwich v Burnley.

How much does the BT Sport app cost?

The BT Sport app is £10 per month for mobile, or connected tablet, access only. Alternatively for £15 per month you can watch BT Sport on multiple devices and on the large screen. And if you also want to add BT Sport Ultimate to your subscription it's £20 per month.

Well I just checked it through the EE app on my phone. My mobile contract is with EE.
It just says ‘get BT sport for £12.50 per month’. (Which is £15 inc VAT.)

How about continuing with 1 transfer a week until the restart? Not sure if FPL can do that or not though, but that would be good when the fixtures are announced

Daft. It's one per gw, not one per calendar week

Yeah I know that but just until it restarts, 1 a week. If you already had 2FTs saved you'd have 4 transfers to sort your team out. Would just have to hope the fixtures get announced sooner rather than later

I think they will try to keep the structure tbh. You get the 2FTs but that will be it.

Excuse me for this dumbass question but is the British time 4.5 hrs or 5.5 hrs behind the Indian Standard Time now? When the PL stopped it used to be 5.5hrs behind, not sure what it is now?

I’m surprised it looks like they’ll let a team play their 2nd game against a team who has played their first. seems like an advantage to the four who get a game in to kick it off. I expected those ties to be played early I even the league up but after a full round of fixtures so that everyone had played a game.

10 rounds of Premiership (counting the first 2 odd games as a round) plus 3 rounds of FA Cup = 13 rounds = 6.5 weeks if they play twice per week. Hence season to end the weekend of 1st August. Then onto Champions League mini-tournament

I think it is literally everyday.

        GW runs Fri - Mon
        Then Tues - Thurs

        I’ve seen that reported anyway.

The statement (from the PL app) says:

"Aston Villa v Sheffield United and Manchester City v Arsenal... will now take place on 17 June, followed by a full match round beginning on Friday 19 June."

Looks like those reports can be believed.
