How the Bundesliga can help FPL managers prepare for Project Restart

Fantasy Premier League managers should make sure they keep an eye on the Bundesliga ahead of the Double Gameweek 30+ deadline.

The top-flight of German football was the first major European league to resume play following the continent’s coronavirus outbreak – and there have been plenty of changes.

These alterations to the usual way of playing have had an impact there and they are likely to affect the Premier League too.

I did try my hand at Fantasy Bundesliga to see if I could get some sort of engagement but it just wasn’t the same as our beloved FPL.

However, watching the Bundesliga has convinced me that football without fans could still make for compelling viewing and provide a great distraction during challenging times.

For example, the meeting between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich was one of the best 90 minutes I have watched, with intensity, aggression and end-to-end action.

But these matches have also provided a chance to weigh up what factors are likely to affect the Premier League when it returns. Here are a few things I learned…

Home advantage is severely diluted

What does the latest government update mean for the Premier League and FPL?

The lack of fans is bound to have some impact on Premier League teams

In the thirty-six matches played since the Bundesliga’s resumption in mid-May, there have been only eight home victories so far.

That works out at just over 20 per cent, almost half the season average of 40 per cent. You can read more about that HERE.

This is worrying for teams like Aston Villa and Norwich, who have typically relied on their home crowd for the points this season.

Dean Smith’s men have secured 17 of their 25 points at Villa Park, while 15 of the Canaries’ 21 have come at Carrow Road.

Even worse for Daniel Farke’s troops is the fact that they have scored 76% of their goals at home, the highest percentage in the league.

The lack of a home crowd could affect teams even higher in the table too.

Everton have picked up 68% of their points at Goodison Park this season and conceded 31 goals on the road compared to just 15 at home.

Arsenal are in a similar boat. They rank sixth for points secured at home this season (25), but recorded just under half (14) on the road.

It also worth considering the teams that typically do better away from home, especially if they may have a greater opportunity to punish their upcoming hosts.

Chelsea have arguably fallen into this category in 2019/20. While they have the same number of wins home and away this season, they rank eighth for home points and third for road points.

Southampton follow this trend too. They have the lowest number of points accumulated in home games this season (14), but are the sixth-best on the road (20).

Rotation is to be expected, especially for fullbacks and wingers

Five subs allowed when Premier League restarts

Guardiola could follow the trend of Bundesliga managers and rotate more

With short turnarounds, Bundesliga line-ups are unpredictable and players are often left out without any prior intimation of injury. It would be reasonable to expect this in the Premier League too.

Centre-backs have been relatively safe compared to the full-backs so perhaps we need to deviate from the traditional strategy of going heavy on the wide men.

A deep Fantasy squad may be important moving forward, with your bench players likely to be called upon more often than usual.

However, the changes to substitutions could even up the threat of rotation.

Now that real-life managers will be able to make five changes in a match (only changing their team on three occasions, of course), the likes of Raheem Sterling (£11.7m) could get more minutes than usual, even if they were benched initially.

It is also worth saying that, in the Bundesliga, the teams at the top-end of the table and those motivated to achieve either the title, European football or safety from relegation have not actually rotated all that much.

For example, key players such as Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and RB Leipzig attacker Timo Werner have started every match so far, which is somewhat encouraging for anyone worried about Manchester City or Liverpool assets.

Injuries are more likely

Vardy cleared for EFL Cup semi-final action ahead of Gameweek 25

The Premier League could see more injuries after Project Restart

There has been a massive upturn in the number of injuries in the Bundesliga since they resumed the 2019/20 season.

Before lockdown, the German top-flight saw roughly 0.27 injuries per game, but the first round of fixtures played after the restart produced an average of 0.88 per game.

While it may not look like a massive leap, it was still an increase of 226% from before.

While the impact of coronavirus on worldwide sport is largely unprecedented, there is still some evidence to back-up the idea that long periods without competitive action can lead to more injuries.

For this, we travel back to 2011 to study the NFL lockout.

Following a league-wide pay dispute which prevented players from accessing team facilities for 136 days, pre-season training camps were cut from the usual 14 weeks to just 17 days.

In the first 12 days of training camp, 10 players ruptured their Achilles tendons and the number of injuries during the first month of the new season was more than double the average typically observed over an entire season.

Both of these examples make for rather ominous reading ahead of the Premier League’s return this month.

Not everyone is going sub crazy

While some FPL teams may use more substitutes, it does not mean all of them will

While there does seem to be plenty to worry about when it comes to injuries, it does look as if the better teams are not taking too many liberties with the five substitutes rule.

The Bundesliga’s top two teams in Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig have used only 3.75 subs per match since play resumed, the joint second-lowest rate in the league.

However, the average number of substitutions made across the league has still gone up by a relatively significant amount.

Before the current pandemic, Bundesliga teams made 2.92 substitutions per match, but this has risen to 4.29 since the restart.

That said, what FPL managers are probably most worried about is assets being brought off before the 60th minute.

Thankfully, the precedent being set in Germany is that not all real-life managers are necessarily making earlier changes.

The average number of substitutions within the first 60 minutes of matches has gone up by only a tiny amount, from 0.62 to 0.88.

Villa fans... Is El Ghazi first choice right winger and do you expect him to start both games in the DGW?

I expect him to start, but was dropped pre lockdown for El Mohamady, and Trezeguet is lurking too. Problem with El Ghazi is he's inconsistent, and gets subbed off a lot. That's not to say he can't do well over these two games though.

Thanks, really helps. Surely Elmohamady won't start over him unless parking the bus?

He’s as nailed as anyone really.

But Tierney was injured in the last 6 games, was he not? In the friendlies he played in midfield with Tierney as defender. Will he keep that spot?

Tierney only started two games all season, I’m not sure when he’s actually been injured and when he’s just been dropped. But I would say Saka would be ahead of him anyway, he’s done well in the games he’s played.

And as you say, they both started in the recent friendly so that’s even better for Saka, as he’s playing more advanced.

It was billed as two training exercises rather than a friendly, and I don't think the scores have been revealed, but Trezeguet scored a today goal for us. Grealish scored a beauty the other day vs West Brom too.

Not much info around at the moment I'm afraid, but there were a few posts on Twitter which suggested we lost 1-0 at Villa Park, with both teams fielding first choice 11's. In the second game / training exercise at Leicester it was the reserves playing and we won 3-0 - that's the one Trezeguet scored in.

He might join training. They might just send him on holiday until next season starts, but either way, he won’t be registered to play PL games.

Don't think he'll rip it up when he does arrive.

For sure, maybe one to watch for later, assist and goal scoring potential similar to Mahrez

As hamezmace stated, Ziyech won't be involved in this PL season. Next season i think he'll need some time to adjust but he'll nail down a spot for sure. Hopefully he'll become an assist king like KdB is now, only difference is ManC is a better team than Chelsea so i guess he'll be 7.5/8.0 and worth getting after a couple matches.

How many times have we fallen into the trap of a DGW with 2 poor fixtures and loaded up on dross and got what we deserved? Or am I wrong. Anyone got any stats?

Yeah, but with the 5 subs rules and lack of match fitness, I’m happy to have 12 players who should all play at least 90minutes, even if that’s over two games.

I feel the empty stadiums will 'ease up' those fixtures a lot tho. Arsenal and Sheffield have two away matches but without much home advantage those fixtures aren't bad. On Villa on the other side i agree, they have two home fixtures but since this doesn't account for much anymore i think Grealish is the only good option there.

Yeah, I agree. This year many of us at least have the wc to save us next week. The loss of team value is scary to me since I will have no chance of getting the old team back after this dgw mayhem.

Hi guys, pls help to RMBBT.

    Leno // Pope
    TAA // AWB // Egan // O'Connell // Saiss
    KDB // Salah // Bruno // Fleck // Hayden
    Kun // Jimi // Long

Going Kun + Fleck -> Rashford + Son in the next 2 GWs

I'm afraid Leno/Pope will give you the biggest benching headache possible. They both have simular fixtures 31+ on. I'd rather take Henderson+Krul for example. (I know you have 3 sheffield already but just saying look at the 'rotation' plan for your gk's)

The planned transfers look great since ManU and Spurs fixtures are amazing after 30+.

    Salah, KDB, Fernandes, Grealish, Saka
    Vardy, Jimenez, Ings

If you still have your WC the most obvious move is to use unlimited transfers to get a DGW/BB team, and then WC the following week to a team for the rest of the season.

But even with that squad? Doesn’t really need ripped up and then have the flexibility of the WC for later when the inevitable injuries creep in. Swaying towards FH actually.

Do what you think is best mate.

I’m saving FH for 38 so I can load up on the players who still have something to play for.

You can’t use a WC to predict injuries, we’ll be getting multiple injuries and rotations every single week.

Best single gameweek 5th midfielder for £5.2 for one week?

    A) Cantwell (plays Southampton)
    B) Noble (nailed and pens)
    C) other?

    I am so confused.

As a gw29 wildcarder I cant see an obvious way forward.

I either demolish my wildcard with unlimited transfers to bbq and make the most of this dgw. Hope that I hit it out of the park and that the 4 dgw teams have great form in the final weeks. Long shot but at rank a million might be the kind of move that can save a shocking season.

    Or

I ignore unlimited transfers and back my wildcard team which has 6 dgw players and better balance going forward. If i did this i could free hit now to maximize this dgw from 11 players and have a better team moving forward. But then I am hoping that the players I picked 4 months ago are gonna fire and the new rules make me doubt fullbacks especially.

Gw 29 wildcarders have been absolutely shafted

It’s a difficult one to call I’m afraid.

Personally I’d use unlimited transfers to bring in some DGW BB fodder (if you still have BB)?

What’s your team anyway? If you have at least one of Aguero or Auba, and KdB, then that’s probably good enough as you say.

I have bench boost and free hit left

        Pope 3.9
Taa Robertson otamendi saiss Burnley defender
        Sterling mahrez pepe saka snodgrass
        Auba Rodriguez jota

I think you could benefit from tinkering with that team with the unlimited transfers, few players in there I wouldn’t want in a post lockdown season.

But saying that I don’t think you should go overboard on DGWers either.

          Like I say, it’s a difficult call.

I WCed in 29 and am taking a potentially dangerous route with BB this week. Gonna have close to 10 DGW ers with Jimi TAA Fernandes and a couple of other defs with SGWs. This is gonna mean a couple of hits in the next two weeks but I still think it's a better option than FH this week. I got a lot of players in my team who I suddenly don't want after this break

Yip. I am leaning that way. Have to make use of up to date info. But going all in on the dgw scares me. Think it's our best option though. If it doesn't work the season was already ruined and if it pays off top 100k is back on the cards for me.

In the same boat and it's tough. But, double game weeks often don't work out how we imagined, and so it's also a chance to do something slightly different and hope it works out.

I'm pretty set on saving free hit - I think it could be useful another week if things become a bit chaotic. If not, using it in the final game week could be a big advantage.

I might bench boost this week, but also wondering if that's a potential red herring, given we might be surprised by the amount of benched players who aren't as fit as we might have hoped. But equally, it might be the best week to play it with the doubles.

BB or not, I think 6 ish double game week players and some strong (and overlooked?) single game week players, with strong fixtures for the run in, has a great chance of keeping up with those picking triple arsenal etc and wildcarding later.

Basically, I'm looking to capitalise on overlooked single game week players this week, carry a strong squad into the remaining fixtures, and save the FH for the future. I think this is more likely to work out than going all in on this unpredictable double with teams like Arsenal and Villa etc. Double Sheffield defence, Kun, KDB, Grealish and Saka - reckon that's enough dgw players. And then can bench half of those afterwards, for a while at least

    Can someone help please.

I’ve made loads of changes - setting myself up for a BB then WC strategy.

Completely forgot that I don’t have my WC. Trying to find a way to recouperate that lost value.

Quite happy with my pre-Covid team. So can I simply activate my free hit, and in GW31+ I will have my pre-covid team back?

Yes. If you play your FH now, your GW31+ team will be the team you had prior to lockdown.

Three SGW players in this FH draft. How does it look?

    Henderson
    TAA Walker O'Connell Egan
    Salah KDB Grealish
    Aguero Auba Vardy

    3.9 McCarthy Guendouzi 3.9

Vardy could be Laca or Pepe but I'm not convinced on any of them.

    Leno Henderson
    TAA Egan O’Connell Targett Lascelles
    KdB Ozil Mahrez Grealish McGinn
    Aubameyang Aguero Jimenez.

I see a lot of comments like 'Will X start?' or 'I'm concerned about Y's minutes'.

In terms of the DGWers you will have players totally not match fit, with 5 subs available and a 2 games in 5 days or less. Coupled with the fact that the main teams City and Arsenal have big, fully available squads, with two managers big on rotation anyway.

Pick your weapon, hope for the best and don't beat yourself up about it if it fails. Biggest lottery week possibly ever in FPL.

    B) Leno, Lacelles and Mahrez
