The Double Gameweek 30+ assets who could excel both for and against Aston Villa

“Football is the most important of the least important things in life” – Arrigo Sacchi

On June 17, the Premier League will return with two postponed fixtures, Aston Villa v Sheffield United and Manchester City v Arsenal – let the countdown begin.

Firstly, it feels good to be writing again. It’s been a challenging few months, but with Project Restart gaining momentum day by day, the buzz is back. So, as focus turns to Fantasy Premier League (FPL), I thought I’d use this piece to discuss several players I’m targeting for the run-in and why I think they can make a difference. I’ll also touch upon their respective teams’ outlooks, along with chip strategy.

It makes sense to start in B6, with my club, Aston Villa.

The reality is we sit 19th in the table, with the worst defence in the division, having imploded before the break – let’s say I’m realistic about our chances of survival.

But there is a Double Gameweek, and if we’re looking for positives, we sit just two points behind both Watford (17th) and West Ham United (16th) with a game in hand.

We rank 12th for goals scored, and in Jack Grealish (£6.4m) and a fit-again John McGinn (£5.4m), we have a midfield double act who are a level above what most teams around us in the table possess.

We also only have to look to the Bundesliga and Hertha Berlin to see how a team can struggle pre-lockdown and then emerge as one of the form teams following the restart.

For the majority of the season, Dean Smith has used a 4-3-3 / 4-1-4-1 system, designed to try and get Grealish, our talisman, on the ball as often as possible. In an attacking sense, it’s largely worked – Grealish has scored more goals and created more chances than any of his teammates.

However, our over-reliance on one outlet has often come at a cost – we can sometimes be predictable in possession and lack creativity whenever Grealish isn’t at the top of his game. McGinn’s return to fitness should at least ease the burden on the captain’s shoulders.

This heatmap below illustrates where Villa have created their chances this season, and emphasises just how much we rely on Grealish down our left.

Gameweek 14 Scout Picks includes Spurs triple-up

Looking beyond the double, Son Heung-min (£9.7m) will be in my starting XI in Gameweek 31+ and is a serious captaincy candidate that week when Tottenham Hotspur host West Ham.

Despite missing seven Gameweeks through injury and suspension, the South Korean has racked up five double-digit hauls and 18 goal contributions already this season, and with an ownership of just 4.7%, I feel it’s too good an opportunity to pass up.

Arguably, no team has benefitted from the break more than Spurs, with the likes of Harry Kane (£10.8m) and Moussa Sissoko (£4.8m) now fit for selection, and with some big games to come against teams around them in the table, it’s all to play for.

Having used my Triple Captain chip in Gameweek 24, I’m currently leaning towards activating my Bench Boost chip in Gameweek 30+, with a Wildcard to follow in Gameweek 31+.

The Free Hit chip can then be used as and when it’s needed.

For those still struggling to decide which route to take, check out Zophar’s article, ‘What is the best FPL chip strategy for Double Gameweek 30+ and beyond?’, from earlier this week – it’s well worth a read.

At this stage, I’d usually post my team for the forthcoming Gameweek, but as I’m still debating several selections and the fact that things will no doubt change between now and deadline, there seems little point.

Instead, I’ll jump on the forum early next week and post my final squad, if there is enough interest.

Thanks for reading… until next time.

    Hi everyone !

Got no WC left, but still have my BB and FH. Looking to build something long term, that would look like this in GW30+ (planning to use BB this GW as well) :

    Henderson, McCarthy
    TAA, O'Connell, Saiss, Taylor, Lascelles
Salah/Mané (currently own both), KDB, Fernandes, Mahrez*, Barnes
    Auba, Jimenez, Nketiah*

Does it look good? What is the best option in your opinion?
    A Mahrez - Nketiah
B Grealish - 6.5m forward (could be DCL, Jota, Deeney or Wood)

    Thanks

I would suggest Kun instead of Auba. Kun will get good minutes surely and will be explosive against Arsenal & Burnley. Can't see Auba outscoring Kun with games against City & Brighton. Also I don't trust Arsenal.

I should have mentioned that I had 0 ITB, so I don't have the funds for Kun, which is why I went for Mahrez. Also, I'd want rid of him immediately after the DGW, while Auba could stay longer with his fixtures, even if like you said Arsenal can't really be trusted.

You've a very good point. But I really feel going without Aguero for the DGW is very risky!

Yeah I know he could very well punish me, but the hope is that if he goes mad, Mahrez will be involved in some way too. Also, I've already been burnt massively by Aguero this season, so I'm a bit reluctant to go down that road again. But you've provided food for thought.

Good point for Mahrez. I hope he does good and you're decision works for good!

Do one really need Kun when they have that many games and in reality nothing to play for? In my head Mahrez at 8.5 is as likely to get the same amount of minutes and then you can have Auba who is super nailed and have nice fixtures also after the double. Going triple City is risky no matter how you choose them and in that circumstances i feel that Sterling and Mahrez alongside KDB is as good as it gets. Kun is not on pens either. But everything is down to how you makes your teams structure and plans, i plan to keep Auba for a while and with Sterling and Mahrez (with some cash itb) it´s easy to switch to Salah/Fernandes for example. And i´m not overly keen on Arsenal mids, if one are, it again affects your teams structure. Points is, Kun can do well in the double, but so can Mahrez/Auba.

if no injuries is reported i would lean toward 2 as Pukki is a very good bet, this is one of the games Norwich have to win if they stand a decent chance to stay up. Southampton were decent defensively when the break came to interupt, but hardly anything to go by imo. Southampton also less to play for. Norwich seems to have all their best 11 intact which also helps Pukki. Jota more likely to be subbed earlier than Jimi, and is by all means not as good as pick but in a short period of time he could match Jimi at least if you take those 1-5 ish difference in price. Between Sterling and Kun there´s really just a guessing work who will be best.

      A. Doherty explosive and great fixtures. Laporte is such a good player but hard to tell how much he'll play given injury record.

hm, difficult to know anything atm, but Laporte were absent for a long while and was not entirely back before the break, so my (not a medical expert) guess is Laporte will be somewhat managed in terms of minutes.

That said, Doherty also at risk being a wide player, but Wolves got a lot to play for and he is so important for them. I went Doherty, as i weighed up those two and Doherty got good fixtures from here to eternity and let´s face it stands a much better chance of getting attacking returns, so i´ll chance the odd bench, if it happens.

I have taken him out for Sterling, rolling the dice on the DGW and Everton will make life difficult for Liverpool so I don't see pool scoring more than once whilst City should score 3 or 4 goals over their 2 fixtures.

Mane, KdB, Grealish, D Luiz, Saka*
    Auba, Kun, DCL

    0.3 itb

I am not happy to have two weak midfield players. DCL has Nor gw31 so Liverpool isn't that big issue for me and I have .4 tied in him. I could "upgrade" him to Jota though. Doherty to Saiss perhaps, but who would I get for Saka? Thx for ideas in advance.

Team looks good for 30+ and 31+. I would go Jota instead of DCL. Evertons fixtures are mixed but Wolves have a great run in.

Maybe dowgrade Doherty and upgrade D Luiz? Doherty is awesome but there is value in the cheaper defenders from Wolves.

If I made transfers during lockdown before the unlimited transfers were announced and decide to FH this week, does my team revert to what it was pre lockdown ?

    Auba, Kun, Pukki*

    B)

    Mahrez, KDB, Grealish, McGinn, Fleck*

Those setting up their teams for BB in 30+ and WC in 31+ are you not worried about the TV you are losing?

I've made a BB team but losing 0.9 TV on transfers

I don't like it, keeping TAA therefore at least, perhaps some other players like Mane and DCL also. I could lose over two millions, but that means something like Salah to KdB or Son for me.

I made a WC draft which I'm happy with and can still afford with the TV I'm losing so no not worried about it.

I’m keeping the players I’ve got a lot of value in—TAA and Jimenez

I'm only losing value on Söyüncü, Ings, Salah and McCarthy so not really worried.

Not too many games left and no other doubles. Plus rotation is going to be rife so expect gw scoring to be all over the place.

Losing 0.5-1m to get an extra 20-30 points (maybe more) is worth it in my view. Also rewards having built up team value (107.6 atm) to make decision easier.

ur only losing value on players u want to bring back in afterwards. I'm holding onto a couple players like TAA and Jimenez to maintain some value which means i'll only realistically be losing value on a few players that I'll want to bring back in for the rest of the season, potentially around £0.6 which I'm happy to give up for this big points opportunity.

From the players I've kept I'm saving 1.0

      Auba/Mane/KDB/Grealish/Saiss/Lascelles/Cantwell/Button

From the players I'm losing I'm losing 0.9

      DCL/Jota/Salah/Robbo/Soy/Rico/Pope

Is it worth it do you think?

BB team will be this. Can WC in 31 and also have FH

      Hendo/Button
      VVD/Stevens/Lund/Saiss/Lascelles
      Mane/KDB/Grealish/Saka/Cantwell
      Kun/Auba/Jimi

I had to go for him because of the price! Nice enabler to have the 4 big hitters.

I have 1m itb but was saving to get salah next week, but I could just get Aguero (C) for Auba this week and then take a hit to get salah next week..

    Leno Reina
Wan Bissaka Trent Doherty Stevens Egan
    Sterling DeBruyne Mount Grealish Fleck
    Aubameyang Jimenez Pukki

    Any thoughts?

As template as can be but here is my BB team for GW30+.

    Leno - Hendo
    TAA - Otamendi - Baldock - Boly - Lascelles
    KDB - Fernandes - Grealish - Cantwell - Saka
    Auba - Agüero - Jimi

WC and FH still in my pocket but I think I will get a decent GW31 team out without using any chip that week.

    Bring it on!

I can see Cantwell doing great in a couple of gung-ho relegation battles.

Ota and Saka are 2 punts that I can take benching GW31+.

I replied to your post also. Cheers!

Tough one, few on here have said with McGinn back, Douglas Luiz isn't an assured starter but that extra 0.3m can go a long way.

Both good options, I've currently got Fleck as my 5th MF but it's between these 3.
