The Fantasy Flutter: Maupay to prosper against under-strength Arsenal defence?

We combine Fantasy football with a flutter in our weekly betting feature, which, like the Premier League itself, returns following a three-month break.

Wednesday’s FPL deadline has been and gone so there’s nothing we can do to influence our teams in Double Gameweek 30+, but we can put our Fantasy nous to some use with a punt on the weekend’s action.

As anyone who invested in David Luiz, John Fleck, Oliver Norwood, Sergio Aguero and/or Pepe Reina will confirm, there is plenty that can happen both on and off the pitch beyond our control.

However, we live in eternal hope that the data in our Members Area can narrow the odds in our favour – both in Fantasy Premier League and beyond.

So we’re turning to the vast array of player and team statistics available to Fantasy Football Scout subscribers to again inspire a bet or two ahead of the upcoming matches.

Those wishing to subscribe to our site to see more of the stats featured in this weekly feature should click here to sign up or upgrade your account.

Rolling monthly subscriptions are now available for £2.99, while annual memberships can be bought for £17.50 – this will not only see you through to the end of 2019/20 but gives you access for the whole of the 2020/21 campaign too.

And please always remember with gambling: when the fun stops, stop.

FPL 2019/20 In Review Part One - Goalkeepers and Defenders

As anyone who saw Wednesday’s night match at Villa Park will attest, goals might be hard to come by at St James’ Park this weekend.

Sheffield United didn’t manage one ‘big chance’ in that Gameweek 30+ opener but, as they so often do, kept it tight at the other end.

Only Liverpool have shipped fewer goals on the road than Chris Wilder’s side, and in only two of the Blades’ 14 away games have more than two goals flown in.

No club has conceded fewer goals than Newcastle United on home soil in 2019/20, meanwhile, with the Magpies having kept clean sheets in six of their 14 fixtures on Tyneside.

And no team has scored fewer goals on their own turf than Steve Bruce’s troops, either.

A 0-0 draw is 13/2 with SkyBet, should the match go the way of the season-long form book.

If there is to be a goal, might it come from a set play?

Newcastle have conceded more headed opportunities than any other team this season and the second-highest number of attempts from set plays.

Centre-half John Egan, who has had more attempts from free-kicks and corners than any of this teammates, is a 33/1 punt with Ladbrokes and elsewhere to bag the first goal and break his Premier League duck.

Many of us will have flogged our Liverpool assets to fund a splurge on Double Gameweek players, so we all know what will happen next.

No team conceded more goals than Everton in their last six matches before lockdown and the Toffees are without a clean sheet since Gameweek 22.

Add this to the plethora of injuries that Carlo Ancelotti’s side currently have and their Merseyside rivals will fancy their chances of adding to the five goals they scored in the reverse fixture in December.

Andrew Robertson is 7/2 with Grosvenor to provide an assist: only three clubs have allowed more chances from their right flank than Everton since Ancelotti took charge and the Toffees looked very suspect down that wing in their 4-0 defeat to Chelsea in March.

Sadio Mane, whose joint-highest FPL score of the season came against Everton in December, is 7/1 to score two or more goals with BetFred.

Arsenal could well be down at least three or four centre-halves when they visit Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday and look set to be missing defensive midfielder Granit Xhaka too.

Less than 72 hours separate the Gunners’ two Double Gameweek 30+ fixtures, with Mikel Arteta’s troops having had to play much of the second half at the Etihad with ten men.

This could be an ideal time for Graham Potter’s struggling Brighton and Hove Albion to meet the beleaguered north London side, then, with questions being asked of Arsenal on and off the pitch.

Neal Maupay has had more efforts on goal this season than all bar two FPL forwards and, although he can be somewhat wasteful with those chances, his joint-highest score of the season came in the reverse fixture at the Emirates.

One of PaddyPower’s price boost bets this week sees Maupay priced up at 6/1 to be the first goalscorer against the Gunners.

Is anybody else waiting to GW32 to WC instead of GW31? I think there's potentially a good advantage to be had by waiting another week - will have more info on injuries, rotation patterns, form, etc.

This is possibly wise. It's difficult to know how Liverpool will perform once they have won the league. Will they go all out to get as many points as possible? Will they rest key players and give the likes of Lallana and Origi lots of gametime? It's a pity they lost that one game, if not they could target an unbeaten season and their defensive assets would be good options still.

I've considered FH32 (when Liverpool play City) and WC33 but I think I'd like to keep my FH up my sleeve in case there is any further disruptions to fixtures later on.

Liverpool will want to break city’s 100 point record. They have nothing else to play for so may as well go hard to the end and beat that record

Yep, planning on next week now as I can sort of make my old BB/DGW team work for this week:

      Leno
      TAA, Saiss, Stevens
      Salah, KDB, Grealish, Cantwell
      Kun, Aub, Ayew

      Reina, Egan, Targett, Saka

      0 ITB

      Or do I WC??

            Leno

            Salah, Grealish, KdB, Sterling

I'd be careful. With Steer back, Villa have now got 3 goalkeepers to pick from.

Steer was really important to the team this time last season in the promotion push so wouldn't surprise me to see him back in sometime.

Does he name a better defensive fullback in PL though? Does that mean TAA is a better defender because he gets forward more? He isn't. TAA has to work on his defending and AWB has to work on getting forward. Depends on the game plan too. He'd be more encouraged to do so at LFC and TAA would struggle at United with a lot more defensive work to do.

Souness loves the sound of his own voice and loves the punditry cash. How many organisations does he do analysis for? Back and forth to Ireland for CL league games. A class player, an average manager, ruined LFC when he managed them. He'd be a better pundit if he'd listen to the opinions of others.

Terms get invented to suit a narrative - one hand you have United fans saying defensive full back and on the other you have Liverpool fans saying attacking full back.

Full backs used to *just* defend. The game has evolved way beyond that. The best teams in the world today all have marauding full backs - TAA + Robbo, Pavard + Davies, Hakimi + Guerrerio etc.

I think Souness' point is more of the fact that United have spent big on a full back who is limited. Does limited cut it out for Man Utd? The days of G. Neville type defenders are long gone. If you have elite tactical management combined with world class GK + CB, you can cover fullback deficiencies and that's exactly why Liverpool, despite having both fullbacks constantly getting caught out, have the best clean sheet and goals conceded numbers across Europe.

So in effect, I sort of agree with Souness. But I do agree with your analysis of him!

Attacking is so important for full backs in modern day football. Give me one who is great going forward but just okay defensively over the Wan-Bissaka type any day.

I'm hearing confusing messages from all angles. The voices won't stop.

Should we pick attackers against teams who have nothing to play for to exploit their complacency or pick attackers against teams who are fighting for something to exploit their desperation.

Should we pick players with low ownership to jump in rank or avoid players with low ownership to protect against rank drops.

      Where am I?

      1. Rostah
        • 9 Years

I think just sticking to picking attacking players with something to play for is more important than worrying about what their opponents have to play for. Complacency due to being on the beach and desperation due to needing points to survive will give opportunities equally to our attacking assets.

Honestly, nothing. I think attempts by broadcasters & the FA to make up for a lack of crowd, while a nice intention, ultimately just highlights the lack of crowd. Crowd sounds have been well incorporated, but stuff like showing fan reactions via webcams etc just breaks the illusion for me and takes me out of the moment. It's like really bad CGI in a movie taking you out of the moment and making you remember 'oh ya, this isn't real at all'. Think they should just lean into the current reality and go with it. I commend them for making an honest effort to make it more engaging for the audience but think their attempts will ultimately be fruitless.

My personal view is that commentators need to drive the engagement. There are reasons why cricket commentators go off topic a lot, its to make the viewing engaging. The spectator experience has changed, commentators need to react to that.

          1. Rostah
            • 9 Years
            3 years, 10 months ago

That's a good point. It is a learning experience for the commentary & production teams so I've no problem with them experimenting with how to improve the end result. ATM it seems like 'off topic' means talking about the lack of fans and how weird it is. I'd like to see that avoided, again for the breaking of the illusion factor. More interesting conversation about football, the teams, the players, etc would be very welcomed.

Top 10k metrics for Gameweek 30+ showed that almost 40% of the Top 10k managers kept an expensive Liverpool mid in their team. This is a topic which was not discussed much in RMT videos and scout cast leading up to GW 30+ (infact, I remember Andy quoting multiple times that he doesn't think many active managers will keep Salah or Mane for this week) .

Would the scoutcast team like to take a retrospective look and compare these two approaches?

Thanks for the reply Joe. Appreciate all the help that scoutcast provides in forward planning. I have learnt a lot from listening to the scouts.

One thing that I find missing from scoutcast is a 5 to 10 minute section where the scouts can also evaluate different perspectives that were in play during the previous gameweek and what an average FPL manager could learn from that. May be you can think of adding this in the next season. This might help folks like me become better at FPL.

You’re in a very specific position there. It has worked out really badly for you, sorry. I generally think fpl did the right thing though the wildcard was going to be a huge advantage with all the blanks and doubles to come and that was preserved. It’s only really bad for people who Wildcarded in gameweek 29 but they can’t base the decisions rules around one small sample of people. With the blank weeks gone and villa sheff.u rescheduled as a new immediate double etc it would have added a huge element of luck if they didn’t give unlimited transfers. You were just really really unlucky I’m afraid. Hope you didn’t TC mane as well!

But they would have had the advantage of a bigger double where they didn’t have to get arsenal and villa players for their BB and Wildcard anyway. I feel bad for 66 6g because he has been really screwed by this as a dg29 wildcarder but I don’t feel bad for people who used wildcards in January.

It’s impacted other Wildcarders but they were going to have to deal with this disadvantage at some point anyway with big DGW and blanks coming thick and fast they’d already had their advantage and this was going to happen at some point the break nearly saved them but unlimited transfer stopped that. GW29 WC are really unlucky as they gained no advantage at all and essentially lost a wildcard.

Unlimited transfers and BB in the same week followed by WC is unprecedented and everyone would have saved for this scenario if we had known.

Wildcard holders let people have an advantage earlier and chose to save for big gains In doubles though without unlimited that advantage was lost someone had to get a rough deal in the end unfortunately. All planning was lost by the removal of blank weeks and future doubles it made sense to reset and give unlimited transfers on balance in my opinion. I’ve never been a fan of chips myself (not wildcards just chips) and it would all have been a lot fairer if they didn’t exist at all.

If they didn’t add unlimited transfers everyone would have used free hit this week. That would have been incredibly unfair on anyone who had used their free hit chip (especially if they’d planned and used transfers to cover off the planned GW29 free hit strategy) so someone was going to get screwed whatever they did. The fixtures were changed significantly with the blanks going and new DGW unlimited transfers was fairest for most. Genuinely do feel bad it didn’t work out for you though that’s rough and I am sorry. Most important was getting the game back though I’m glad fpl made a decision and got on with it rather than being scared to upset people and ending it.

A bit like Australia scoring 400 and England on 100 for 9 and saying we must start again and do away with Duckworth Lewis because we can get another days revenue out of the crowd

I'll answer this now as its more retrospective.

I can see why they did it - to keep everyone engaged.

But those like you and me have been handed a massive disadvantage having played ours around March.

Not only have we missed out, but those that kept their WC have in effect been handed two WC.

But I can see why they did it and Ithink its a good idea, even tho not ideal for me and you.

As said on last scoutcast - we are the underdogs..... we are the rebel alliance against those WC Vadars. Its up to us to make the best of it. 🙂

Everyone in GW30+ either played their Free Hit or had unlimited transfers, which is equivalent to a wildcard.
No-one ever gets 2 free transfers the game-week after playing their Free Hit or Wildcard.

Is it worth investing in Man City assets over and above KDB?

      Reasons For:

      - They are clearly showing form
      - They will dominate possession in "away" games as much as "home" games
      - Pep will want to keep standards high, in preparation for the CL restart
      - Fab fixtures from 33+

      Reasons Against:

      - Pep roulette, opportunities to really test different players and combinations vs stability of lineup for CL restart
      - High player cost / risk of not playing
      - Motivation - they're going to be runners up, regardless
      - Chelsea/Liverpool up first

If the case is for additional City players, which ones? Defence (Ederson, Laporte), Mids (Sterling, Mahrez, cheeky punt on Foden?), Kun? Any others?

Maybe look to save 2 transfers for 33+?

Should I prioritise De Bruyne or a Liverpool midfielder on my Wildcard. Is it also too big a risk to go without TAA?
What’s the best way to balance between these big guns currently in our teams and the Utd, Spurs, Leicester, Chelsea and Wolves assets I want in my midfield and attack?

Are Leicester being completely overlooked? Especially Vardy, who is still the top scoring striker in the game, who is nailed, on pens, recovered from injury, etc. I see very few Leicester players being talked about and practically none in WC teams. I feel Leicester still have a lot to play for (solidify CL spot) and have good fixtures for the most part.

Restart of Bundesliga - fewer clean sheets and more away wins.

Restart of Premier League - 3 clean sheets in the first two matches, and no away wins.

What can we learn from this apart from the fact that The Premier League is not the Bundesliga?

After 11 matches of the Premier restart, there have been:
3 home wins, 4 away wins and 4 draws
4 home clean sheets (36%) compared with a total of 86 in the previous 288 matches (30%)
5 away clean sheets (45%) compared with a total of 59 in the previous 288 matches (20%)
11 home goals (1.00 per match) compared with a total of 434 in the previous 288 (1.51 per match)
12 away goals (1.09 per match) compared with a total of 351 in the previous 288 (1.22 per match)
So unlike the German Bundesliga, we have so far had fewer goals and more clean sheets than usual.
But the sample is probably too small to show whether the lack of crowds is nullifying home advantage, especially as more of our big sides had away matches than home matches in GW30+.

The short intervals between matches do appear to be a problem though - the 3 teams that have played twice so far all lost their second matches.

There were also fewer cards than usual given in GW30+: 2 reds and 27 yellows (0.18 and 2.48 per match), compared with 35 reds and 1013 yellows in the previous 288 matches (0.12 and 3.52 per match).

There were probably also more substitutions (mostly after 60 minutes) and injuries, but I haven't actually counted them.

For those who had a squad already set up for GW31+ onwards and still had their Bench Boost and Free Hit chips and Second Wildcard all still available, which strategy is likely to turn out best in the long run:
      (a) Using the unlimited transfers to set up the squad for the highest possible Bench Boost score in GW30+, followed by playing the Second Wildcard soon after, but being unable to afford to buy back all the players in the old squad because of the money lost when selling them
or (b) Playing the Free Hit chip in GW31+ but taking the risk that it might be more difficult to have a full 15 players for a later Bench Boost.

I think the optimal strategy was A) thus far with the sheffield utd/villa cleanies, leno & the stacking up of city attackers. The average GW score is so high. Let's see what happens with the remaining GW fixtures though. I lost 1.0m TV by flogging some players for the BB this GW, but still have a decent 106.3m to attack the WC for GW31+. Happy that I kept Fernandes!

My TV wasn't quite as high as yours. My TV for my GW30+ Free Hit squad was only 104.9m but will return to 106.6m (if there are no relevant price changes before then) for GW31+, when I will probably play my Bench Boost since my squad appears to be pretty well set up for that.

I already have 17 points on my bench from Fernandes (unless Abraham is a no-show) and McCarthy, so with hindsight perhaps I ought to have Bench Boosted in GW30+ instead or included Fernandes in my Free Hit starting eleven, but I would then have had less budget to play with in subsequent game-weeks.

It will be interesting to look at mini-leagues such as The FFScout Charity Shield that started scoring in GW30+, to see whether the GW30+ Bench Boosters are still ahead of the GW30+ Free Hitters after GW31+ and also at the end of the season.

I ended up with 22 points on my bench.
It would have only been 13 if Abraham hadn't come on for a cameo, blocking Fernandes from being auto-subbed for him.

Can we think of some examples from the past of players from different price points who've finished the season strong from an FPL perspective: What sort of players have done well? What teams have they been playing for? Were some playing for a contract or on their way out? Been quiet up to this point but had a burst in the last 6-8 games? etc.

(Taking into account that these are not normal run-in circumstances...)

Looks ok to me, Cantwell will play all home games in odd GWs 31,33,35,37...Nketiah in GW 32...so you just need a def who covers 34,36,38. TOT, MCI and WHU seem to have best fixtures then.

    Should I play:

    a) WC GW 31+ and FH GW38+

    or

    b) FH GW31+ and WC GW33+

    Team for GW32+ would be:

    Leno (NOR)

Doherty (av) PVA (BUR) One of Lund, Stevens, Baldock (TOT)

KDB (LIV) Mount (wh) Grealish (WOL)* Mahrez (LIV)*

Aguero (LIV)* Jota (av) Aubameyang (NOR)

Nyland, El Ghazi, Two SHU defenders

*I can sell some of them for a hit if needed.

    Currently on b).

    Thanks!

So I am pretty bleak with what's happened in my team -

I used the complimentary wildcard to set up my team for the post covid/end of season run. Once conformed, I then used the free hit chip to capitalize on Dbl game week...
However, my core team is now reset back to Pre wildcard play

The big doubt i have with my WC is to go cheap on the bench or have a decent 5th mid option like Traore.
The two points of view i have are that there might be sudden injuries we don't here about so its good to have a couple bench options.
The other is with 5 subs your first eleven have a high chance of playing even if they are benched.

i.e. I could downgrade Traore, 5th mid, and upgrade Saiss to Doherty but that would leave my only real bench option being Lascells.

Like in a normal season I just want to have a budget bench of players who will get minutes. GK I don't mind being a non-starter but will have my 3 outfield players be people who either definitely get minutes or are now more likely to get minutes. Cantwell, Guendouzi, Jack Robinson, Brandon Williams, Nketiah, Mousset etc etc are all fine picks for bench options IMO. Not perfect options, not guaranteed minutes, but fine options for how often you'll need them IMO.
