Alli returns for Spurs as Bergwin drops to the bench

Dele Alli (£8.3m) is straight back in the Spurs line-up for Gameweek 31+ as Spurs host West Ham in a London derby.

The mid-priced midfielder missed Double Gameweek 30+ due to a social-media-related suspension but has no issues breaking back into Jose Mourinho’s team at the first time of asking.

Alli takes up the number 10 role, fulfilled by Erik Lamela (£5.7m) against Manchester United, hoping to get back to his pre-lockdown form, which yielded five attacking returns between Gameweeks 24 and 29.

The return of the England international sees Lamela drop to the bench, but Double Gameweek 30+ goalscorer Steven Bergwijn (£7.4m) suffers the same fate.

His wide-attacking midfield berth has been handed to the returning Lucas Moura (£7.1m), who missed the Manchester United game through injury.

While Alli poses some potential as a differential, the main Fantasy focus from this London derby will, of course, be on Son Heung-min (£9.7m).

The South Korean is owned by just 7.9% worldwide, but he still sits in 40% of squads inside the top 10,000 managers.

Furthermore, 6.7% of those at that level have handed him the armband for Gameweek 31+.

As ever, there is little interest in the West Ham assets, their 4-3-3 line-up probably more encouraging for the 6% invested in Serge Aurier (£4.9m) more than anything else.

Still without a recognised striker in the starting XI due to Sébastien Haller‘s (£6.8m) injury, David Moyes has named a front-three consisting of midfielders.

Pablo Fornals (£6.0m), typically deployed in the middle, sits on one side of Michail Antonio (£6.9m) with Jarrod Bowen (£6.4m) on the other.

West Ham United XI: Fabianski; Cresswell, Balbuena, Diop, Fredericks; Rice, Soucek, Noble; Fornals, Antonio, Bowen.

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Lloris; B Davies, D Sánchez, Dier, Aurier; Sissoko, Lo Celso; Son, Alli, Moura; Kane.

Think the issue is that offside can't be 100% with the cameras and in game about scoring goals VAR's threshold favours defense more than attack. E.g why not whole foot or body instead of big toe or nose

So be it. Would rather we disallow a few marginal goals than allow so many howlers like we were before.

The technology is better than the human eye and is therefore progress.

I'd rather we be smart enough to allow marginals (a la the old benefit of the doubt to the attacker) and stop the complete howlers since they are likely super obvious

I’m with you on that and the goal Son scored was a case in point in that he gained very little, if any, advantage by being an armpit too close to the oppositions goal. If you asked most football fans I think they would agree that marginals like ghat goal should favour the attacking team. The only issue is how they will create a football law based on what I have stated. They can’t just say, oh it was really close so let the goal stand. They would need something concrete.

I'd say we should all refs to apply their own judgement....but they are so bad it would never work

You could go the other way entirely. E.g was his entire body offside. That way you disallow slot less.

I'm not saying there is any answer but surely it can be better than it is

Has to be daylight between attacker and defender to be offside, or a certain distance offside. A toe being offside is not an advantage for the attacker

Lol how would you define a daylight and advantage?

Then you want VAR to spend ages trying to calculate if it is one daylight offside or almost one daylight offside

          • 14 Years

Agree with this but for it be a law the ref / VAR needs to know a precise distance. There can't be any grey area.

For the absolute marginal decisions (like Wolves goal vs Liverpool before lockdown), they really shouldn't be given offside.

If the line that they draw for the last defender is within mms of the attacking player, I think they should let it go.

There would still be a line drawn by which people are on or offside, so I don't see how that solves the problem that people are annoyed with. It solves a different problem

VAR should be used for obvious mistakes only.

Like cricket... they take into account the umpires decision so if less than half the ball is hitting the respective outside stump the ball-tracking decision goes along with the umpire's decision.

I believe they should give an allowance of... what... six inches? from the defender so that if Son's left foot - in this occasion - is within that allowance it goes with the linesman's decision of not offside and the goal stands.

Joking aside, I'd suggest that if an offside isn't clear to a VAR without slow motion or pausing the playback, it doesn't break the intention of the rule.

you're leaving it up to the refs there again. Different refs will have different reactions on whether somethings clear or not on first glance.

So? That's what they're there for, and what they do now. The rules were made with an intention, and that gets lost in the minutiae. The technology isn't perfect anyway.

And if it isn't clear, don't give offside. Most of the time, that will be consistent. This way it catches the obvious mistakes, but doesn't interfere too much.

I'm glad I used my FH this week. Vardy and Son not looking great options going forward.

This Spurs side is oozing mid table mediocrity. Amazing that they’re 8th.

Only been 8 first half goals in the 13 matches so far, plenty of time for goals yet.
