Salah set to polarise top 10k FPL managers with Gameweek 31+ captaincy

Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) has the power to single-handedly define Gameweek 31+ for a much of the world’s top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers.

The Egyptian was the subject of much debate in preparation for the latest round of action and, after Tuesday’s 17:00 BST deadline, he was revealed as the most popular captain.

That fact is particularly ominous considering that Salah is currently only owned by half of the top 10k. Knowing that so many armbands have been handed to the Liverpool man will surely make the rest of Gameweek 31+ a tense affair for those that have avoided him.

As expected, the Gameweek 31+ captaincy has proven a fractured affair, with no asset managing to build up more than 30% support, even among the top 10k.

In fact, the gap between first and second place at that level stands at just 5.7%, opening the door for potentially sizeable green and/or red arrows depending on what transpires.

As already mentioned, it was Salah who emerged as the most captained option for the midweek round, but he managed only 27.2% backing from the top 10k.

A blank for the Egyptian combined with another haul from Bruno Fernandes (£8.7m) could see a sizeable change in rank for the 21.5% who captained the Portuguese international.

Likewise, any slip-up from Salah and Fernandes could leave the door open for the brave 12.6% of top 10k managers who skippered Raúl Jiménez (£8.2m) jumping for joy as well.

Sadio Mané (£12.5m) was backed by 8.3% while the 6.7% who went for Son Heung-min (£9.7m) were rewarded with an assist and clean sheet on Tuesday night – although they will be smarting at seeing his first-half goal disallowed for offside.

Not surprisingly, the Wildcard was the most fashionable chip for Gameweek 31+ after the Bench Boost and Free Hit took prominence for the Double Gameweek last time out.

43.2% of managers inside the top 10k pulled the trigger on new squads for the midweek round of action, taking the total usage of this chip at this level to 77.7%.

Interestingly, it means just under a quarter of them are holding fire before spending the second Wildcard, perhaps hoping to accumulate more data of football in the new post-coronavirus world.

The Free Hit also received some attention for Gameweek 31+, deployed by 8.5% of top 10k managers.

In the most part, those in the upper echelons of the Fantasy world rankings are keeping that chip in their back pocket.

As you can see from the graph above, it is the only one to have been used by less than half of those in the top 10k with seven Gameweeks left of the season.

For all the Wildcard’s attention in the top 10k, that did not make much of a dent on the overall usage of the chip.

As you can see, only 3.4% of managers worldwide deployed the second Wildcard for Gameweek 31+, and just under 70% still are yet to use it.

That goes some way to highlighting the drop-off of active players but also encourages those languishing in unfavourable rankings as it could theoretically mean green arrows are slightly easier to come by than usual.

The top 10k are proving to be big fans of Wolves and their upcoming fixtures, with three of their assets present in the ownership template.

The most popular of these Jiménez, owned by 83.6% at this level, nearly double that of the second-most-fashionable forward Marcus Rashford (£8.9m).

The England international forms one half of the double-up on Manchester United assets enjoyed by a sizeable chunk of the top 10k.

43.8% of them are invested in the centre-forward but it is Fernandes who is the more fashionable option. Having played just six matches in Manchester United colours, the Portuguese international already finds himself in close to 80% of squads in the top 10k.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.5m), who has excelled since Carlo Ancelotti took over at Everton, completes the forward line in the top 10k template, acquired by 43.6% of managers at this level. They will be hoping for big things from the Toffees forward when they travel to Norwich on Wednesday evening.

Exciting full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.8m) and Matt Doherty (£6.4m) are owned by 82.6% and 57.2% respectively, acting as a premium double-pivot in defence.

Therefore, it is no surprise to see the value offered by Jamaal Lascelles (£4.3m) taken up by so many as well, 43.5% of the top 10k including him in their Gameweek 31+ squads.

Interestingly, just under a third of managers at this level showing continued faith in John Lundstram (£4.9m) despite Sheffield United’s tough fixtures between now and Gameweek 38.

Considering the Wildcard was so heavily deployed by the top 10k this week, it is no surprise to see some level of overlap between the most popular players in such squads and the main top 10k template.

There are a total of 13 players sat in each template, but it is interesting to note where these two groups differ.

Bukayo Saka (£4.7m) appears to have become the new favourite fifth midfielder after his promising displays for Arsenal in the Double Gameweek.

Meanwhile, Serge Aurier (£4.9m) has been turned to as a replacement for Lundstram and immediately provided a reward in the form of a clean sheet against West Ham.

Not one single person asked for offside; really I’m more irritated at west ham for not having one single defender in any kind of proper position

Yeah I tend to agree but any goals they do score will likely come through Vardy. I've got a kun spaced hole in my team so trying to decide between Rashford and Vardy myself or another option (already have Jimmy and Auba). I like the look of ings but afraid he may be rested

For me they will almost score similar points. Ighalo can share minutes with Martial surely. That's the effective thing for me to decide.

Also, Rashford will come good as soon as he gets some minutes under his belt. But i won't say no to anyone going for Martial too !

but humour me with a reply anyway

    A. Patricio and Lascelles
    B. Martinez and Ritchie
I do have Doherty and is it correct Leno is out for a few weeks ?

        Patricio
        TAA Doherty Aurier
        Lascelles Holgate.

He’s very cheap, but Arsenal’s form is so dire that you wouldn’t trust them to keep a cleansheet against anyone.

Are you WC’ing for GW32+? If yes, I would leave Martinez alone.

So... now that I’m somehow not posting in a thread from last September 🙂

Anyone looked at Kane’s stats from last night versus his averages from the rest of the season?

    - Way further forward on heatmap
    - Nearly double the number of penalty area touches
    - Double the amount of goal attempts & attempts in the box
    - 3 big chances (compared to 0.5)
    - 3 shots on target (compared to 1.1)
    - XG six times higher (ok it’s from a baseline of 0.3 per game, but still)

    WTF did Mou do?!

I didn't see the game - was it the yellow card that scuppered his bonus chances?

3 shots off target, 2 unsuccessful dribbles (ahem), 8 misplaced passes, 56% pass completion, non-winning goal & yellow card all co-conspirators in the bonus stakes

Was the September thread any good?
Would the stats have anything to do with him being surrounded by possible the best attacking team they can put out. I don’t know how many times that attack has been fielded together this season.

            It was West Ham !!
Nothing to do with spurs best attack IMO.
They allow shots left right center under Moyes

Burnley, Spurs, Arsenal, Newcastle, Bournemouth, Norwich & Villa (7 teams) have all conceded more shots than West Ham this season

Since Moyes has came in, Spurs Bournemouth, Burnley & Villa have all allowed more attempts on goal - but they are towards the bottom of the league for a reason

Kane’s positioning though was much further forward, and that type of across the board statistical jump is very interesting imo - if he keeps getting 3 big chances and a couple of non-penalty XG per game things will get spicy

Could be a once off anomaly though

He got one good chance in the first half. That must be the reason his XG is high.
                Hmm

Still, I'm not convinced by him as i said below his basic instinct is to take control of play rather than making a lung bursting runs in opposition box. If he gets them back, after a fee seasons i guess we'd had a sure shot premium striker in our hands (Aguero is always rotation risk so discounting him)

The slower pace to the game is suiting him. He was absolutely out on his legs after being played through by Son, which is understandable given his injury layoff. Should get stronger and sharper now.

I watched the game till 60 minutes i guess. Seeing that I'm still happy with my choice of Son over Kane.

Basic instinct of Son is running towards the opposition goal as soon as they win the ball. But kane almost 8 times out of 10 runs towards the ball and let Moura Son Alli Lamela overlap. Not good enough for that price tag for me

    Best GW 32 punts-

I am looking for 2 one week punts for GW 32 before a WC in GW 33.
    Pope.
    TAA, Saiss, Maguire.
    KDB, Fernandes, Salah, Barnes.
    Aubameyang, DCL, Jota.
    Stek, Holgate, Stephens, Dendoncker.
    2 ft's, 3.2m ITB.

Barnes -> Son is 0.5m short atm.
Salah-> Son (leaving room for a big upgrade elsewhere) is an option too.
PVA, Alonso, Pepe, Martial, Pogba are some other considerations.

      I don’t see the problem.
Saka /Foden Is good enough as rotation 4 mid or you can play 4 of those defenders.
I don’t think having a decent bench is a problem it might be ideal right now.
If anything you probably could have gone a bit cheaper on some of the defenders like Saiss for Bolly or Lascelles for Ritchie but that defence looks great.

After gameweek 30+ my the players to think carefully about and my views are as follows:
Rashford not on his game so wait until after this GW to get him in
Kane chronic over 2 games. His goal is fools gold.
Son not great 1st game but better last night when he moved inside and Hammers starting to tire.
    Barnes unreliable perforances and gametime.
    Grealish playing deeper
Jesus fit but his positional play way out of sync

    Guys who played well considering:
DCL Sarr Bergwyjn Traore Jimmi Foden Mahrez Ings SaintMaxim Mount

There are others but these are choices to be made IMO

Having cash for all the “name” players doesn’t mean we should get them but it sure is an easy trap to fall into and also leaves your team pretty template
But do I have the balls to go Mahrez over KDB for instance I am not sure.

Ownership is huge but I never seem to have cash ITB so a lot of the time I must just getting the most expensive player I can afford but maybe not the best. I think I feel more comfortable that way as it doesn’t feel like I taking a risk or playing a diff and yeah that is where the ownership worry kicks in too.

I think Foden is a case in point. The lad could go mental and is likely to get reasonable minutes. It might "waste a space" in Citeh but most won't get him because they are drawn to expensive, well known, highly owned players. I have left out Salah/Mane for the first time this season. At 12.5+ I am going for history if I got them and not a logical pick. The 5 subs rule screws things up big time though. Getting 1 pointers from the likes of Foden will be more common. Why do people mend things that are not broken?

Not having Mané or Salah is going to blow up in your face big time, imo. Liverpool played that Everton game without Robertson and Salah and a workmanlike midfield. I don’t see Klopp being so cautious vs Palace.

The Son pick is a strange one. Yes he’s a great player and has been proven in FPL but I don’t like the system Mourinho has him playing in. It’s far too rigid to get the best out of him.

Son has picked up most of his FPL points through the middle when Kane was injured.

I doubt it. They M City after CP and usually they both won't haul big time. I guess 2-0 is enough for Pool and Klopp will rotate like Pep. Risking key players when others need game time means limited minutes and there are many other teams that have something to play for.

Cheers. I probably should’ve taken a hit for a Man Utd defender given their fixture run, but am now in a position where I need to sell Mount to free up funds. Really do want Foden after the Liverpool game so I don’t mind moving Mount on.

Stevens to Aurier is an option or Boly/Saiss.

After deliberating for a long time who to bring in, I was held up at work and I never double checked the time the first game starts as I assumed it would be the normal 8pm GMT. Got found out and missed the deadline after I did really well last gameweek. Son getting that 6 pointer was a huge relief, another one in DCL/Rich whom I missed could still cost me more points. On the brighter side, I have 2FT to go with in the next GW so that helps.

Games coming thick and fast will be difficult to manage for FPL Managers and injuries to players which would be undeniable would be difficult to handle in the run in I reckon.

That’s unlucky. I think a few people missed the deadline.

Do you still have 2 x FTs or used one or both already?

Still have the 2 FT. Would wait and use in on Friday.

        My team:

        Pope
        TAA Doherty Lasc
        Mane KDB Mahrez Bruno Grealish
        Jimi

        Leno Abraham Nketiah Egan

        Thoughts going forward?

Similar balance to mine above. Abraham and Grealish the obvious weak spots. I’d be tempted to switch to Rashford and Foden (you could throw in a Leno downgrade).

Tbh, I wasn't keen on taking out Grealish, more so before Newcastle. Now fixtures are becoming more difficult. He is their talisman, and I think he will remind us again how good he has been this season. McGinn back helping his course?

On my transfers, Rashford is interesting, hopefully this gameweek throws a few surprises to make the game even more interesting. 🙂

Grealish is the most fouled player in PL. If only they fouled him inside the box, he would be a points magnet.

Lol, he is their main man, can see points against the Magpies.

Abraham is a rotation risk. Giroud seems the preferred starter. Rashford, DCL and Deeney are some of the options.

Playing Nketiah vs Norwich could be a 1 pointer or a haul.

Downgrading Leno could free up cash.

Double wolves def is an option (Egan to Saiss?). Everton, Palace, Southampton, even Spurs def have also looked solid.

Thanks. Looking at all options atm. Will watch as many games as possible and make a decision on Friday. Cheers.

Watch especially Foden and Minamino minutes. They can have ridiculous value towards season end. They want to show off and get regular XI spots for next season.

Thanks mate, makes sense when Pool and City can wrap up 1st and 2nd place early on.

Everyone is a rotation risk. Bench can come into play.
