Patience with Vardy wearing thin as Leicester attack continues to struggle

Leicester 0-0 Brighton

  • Goals: None
  • Assists: None
  • Penalties saved: Kasper Schmeichel (£5.4m)
  • Penalties missed: Neal Maupay (£5.7m)
  • Bonus Points: Schmeichel x3, Ben Chilwell x2 (£5.5m), Çaglar Söyüncü x2 (£4.9m)

There was a missed penalty. The end.

That’s how the match report for this Tuesday evening encounter should have gone but, luckily for you, we are committed to at least trying to find a lesson for Fantasy managers to learn as they start preparing for Gameweek 32.

Owners of Jamie Vardy (£9.7m), still 29.7% of managers worldwide, will be the most frustrated as his troubles in front of goal dragged on.

The centre-forward’s latest blank is his eighth from a possible 10 since Gameweek 19, registering just three attacking returns in that time.

There was even some captaincy interest in Vardy for Gameweek 31+ but his virtually anonymous displays against Watford and Brighton will have his owners already worried about the next two matches.

Everton host Leicester in Gameweek 32+ having kept three clean sheets from six at Goodison Park under Carlo Ancelotti, only conceding more than once against Newcastle in Gameweek 24.

After that, Vardy will face a Crystal Palace defence that did not give up a single goal between Gameweeks 27 and 30+.

Particularly concerning for Vardy is the fact that he has not been all that unfortunate to blank in each of his Project Restart matches.

In the first 27 minutes of Tuesday’s meeting with Brighton, the forward touched the ball just once with his colleagues unable to get him on the ball up against the visitors’ defence.

With two matches of Project Restart chalked off already, it is easy to see the problem for Vardy is not just his own but with the entire Leicester team, which looked especially sluggish against Brighton. It will be particularly alarming for Brendan Rodgers that on both Saturday and Tuesday, his side enjoyed the lion’s share of possession, did very little with it, and gave up the bigger and better chances to their opponents. Perhaps that should not come as a massive surprise given the Foxes pre-lockdown form. Between Gameweeks 24 and 29, only Sheffield United, Norwich and Aston Villa registered few big chances than Leicester.

Largely out of necessity, Rodgers shuffled his pack following the draw at Watford. He benched Harvey Barnes (£6.2m), much to the chagrin of his 3.9% ownership, replacing him on the left-flank of attacking midfield with Kelechi Iheanacho (£5.7m).

Demarai Gray (£5.0m) came in for Ayoze Pérez (£6.2m) and, like Iheanacho on the other side, offered very little in the way of creativity. Even when Barnes and Pérez came on in the second half, they could not find a way to trouble Brighton’s defence.

“(The short turnaround) was one of the reasons (we rotated). It was Saturday/Tuesday for players just coming back. We wanted extra support in midfield with Papy Mendy, who has good legs. Dimi was very good at the weekend, and we wanted to put a striker in too. The two systems cancelled each other out, without scoring.” – Brendan Rodgers

James Maddison (£7.5m) also put in another disappointing performance, wasting his direct free-kicks and blazing over any efforts from open play too. He had one of Leicester’s best chances in the second half, receiving the ball on the edge of the box from a Vardy knock-down, only to fire it high and wide. It is particularly telling that, for all his set-piece duties, Maddison has not provided an assist since Gameweek 16.

In arguably one of the dullest games of the season so far, there was a silver lining for the neutrals in the display of Tariq Lamptey (£4.0m).

Coming in at right-back for Brighton, the budget defender should be handed credit for his role in ensuring Leicester struggled on Tuesday night, especially considering it was touch-and-go over whether he would need substituting in the first half because of a cut to the face.

A particular highlight for the youngster was when Vardy tried to burn him for pace out-wide, pushing the ball past the defender, only for Lamptey to match the forward and dispossess him easily.

“I think you could see (Lamptey’s) attributes. He has got great speed. I thought he competed well, showed great courage because he took a heavy smash to the face and needed stitches. He had a big hole on the side of his face. But he played against some good players out there and I thought he was magnificent.” – Graham Potter

This result did, admittedly, make for one or two happy souls in the FPL community, notably those invested in the Leicester defence. Çaglar Söyüncü (£4.9m) and Kasper Schmeichel (£5.4m) are still owned by 15.6% and 13.5% respectively, both keeping a clean sheet and the latter saving a Neal Maupay (£5.7m) penalty.

“(Schmeichel) is invaluable. He’s one of the best in the league. He studies the players’ penalties. He’s been very good in the two games back.” – Brendan Rodgers

“A clean sheet, fitness was good and subs tried to make an impact and we didn’t concede so we’ll take a point. We haven’t won the games, but we’ve showed a good mentality to not concede so much and hopefully, after more training, we can find the goals to get back to winning.” – Brendan Rodgers

Leicester City XI (4-2-3-1): Schmeichel; Chilwell, Söyüncü, Evans, Justin; Mendy (Tielemans 69′), Ndidi; Iheanacho (H Barnes 69′), Maddison, D Gray (Pérez 73′); Vardy.

Brighton and Hove Albion XI (4-4-2): Ryan; Burn, Webster (Duffy 24′), Dunk, Lamptey; Mac Allister (March 58′), D Stephens, Bissouma (Bissouma 58′), Mooy; Connolly (Murray 82′), Maupay (Trossard 57′).

It’s not a beer, it’s a stout. Very earthy and heavy. I like it but after 3 you’ll want something lighter!

I used to enjoy Caffreys at uni. It’s halfway between a beer and stout and very smooth. Not sure they make it now.

Its great stuff, like pints of lovely smooth Alcoholic milk if you can get a good pub & barman who can pour it right

Just prepare to have some absolutely apocalyptic smells emanating from you the next day - people seeking the use of a commode directly after a previous-night Guinness drinker have often been reduced to tears and/or PTSD

Haha, well didnt know about the smells tho. Good to know. Anyways I think I cant enjoy drinking it here where I live as much as I would there in UK in some great pub.

Guinness gives you the trotts like nothing else. It is easier to get through several than the way they brewed it 30 years ago but I steer clear.

What do you enjoy Ginkapo. My favorite nowadays is pale ales. I think most IPAs get a bit too bitter but pale ales strike a nice balance, especially now in the summer.

      Stouts are great in winter.

    KDB - Salah - Bruno - Sarr - Cantwell
    Vardy - Jimenez - DCL

    to this:

    Foster - Pope
    Doherty - Maguire - Aurier - Saiss - Lascelles
    KDB - Son - Bruno - Sarr - Saint-Maximin
    Jimenez - Jesus - Rashford

Still holding my BB so I want 15 playable players

    A Vardy/Salah to Kane/Fernandes

I've picked son because of their good fixtures and get the feeling I've been duped. Starting to think that spurs attacking assets may be a trap as I get flashbacks of their pre-covid 19, unattractive and bland style of football that had most Man utd fans happy to see the back of mourinho. Kane only scored because of West ham's inept defending and most times he seems to come to deep to collect the ball. Hopefully, for you, I'm wrong. Good luck!

I have Vardy and only 1 FT so I will hold for one more week and asses.

I may even consider shifting to 3-5-2 from 3-4-3 Have you looked at that?

Vardy > Nketiah upgrade Saka and Dendoncker -4 or do dendonck this week as Ars play norwhich so could get away with playing Saka.

But I almost certainly will get rid of Vardy.

Also Jesus to consider depending on Kun injury. I would probably give Kane/spurs one more week but I thought it looked promising.

I am looking for a couple of 1 week punts for GW 32 before a WC in GW 33.

    Pope.
    TAA, Saiss, Maguire.
    KDB, Fernandes, Salah, Barnes.
    Aubameyang, DCL, Jota.
    Stek, Holgate, Stephens, Dendoncker.
    2 ft's, 3.2m ITB.

Barnes -> Son is 0.5m short atm.
Salah-> Son (leaving room for a big upgrade elsewhere) is an option too.
PVA, Alonso, Pepe, Martial, Pogba are some other considerations.
    Anything standing out?

How does this WC team look for GW 33+ onwards? Not WCing this gw.

    Ederson - Button
    TAA - Maguire - Taylor - Holgate - Robinson
    Mane - KDB - Son - Fernandes - Mount
    Rashford - DCL - Connolly

Will keep the Mount spot flexible. May target the Norwich fixtures. For e.g. Trossard in 33, Sarr in 34, formals/lanzini in 35, mount in 36, etc.

    Thoughts please? 🙂

well then you were lucky, escaped by the danish pen saver majesty

I wonder what in the chelsea game that made you not wanting to play KDB? Chelsea with that defence is not very good.
You do have good fixtures for most of them you play, i´ll give you that, not easy to leave any out. Even in hindsight and 5 points i would not have played Justin though.

            Indeed I did get lucky.

Gut feel I guess and to try something different. Im in a tight battle in one of my leagues in second place.

Perhaps KDB may play a little deeper against Chelsea and without Aguero to feed he may not have the same quantum of assist opportunities. Saying that I do know he somehow finds his was in to the action and has set piece duties. I can also see Chelsea really trying to step up against City too.

It could be terrible call but lets see!

That’s the main reason I played my FH and not WC this week so that I get Aubameyang back for Norwich.

Auba May be rested. Arsenal have nothing to play for. He is likely to have played in the fa cup game 3 days earlier and the league game 3 days before that.

No chance. If Arteta wants to save his job, he’ll have to start his best player and win some games in the league. He can’t afford to take chances vs the bottom team.

May be an early sub if the game is wrapped up.

Even if he starts... are you confident in him hauling? He's spending a lot of time POO & whilst he does pop up with the occasional haul, he's still miles behind the benchmark for strikers (Vardy) on points, despite Vardy giving him a 10 game headstart around Christmas to try & catch him

Maybe being away will help him... but his home record when he's expected to deliver is something else - he's fluffed his lines at every turn:

        - 10 "Blue" home fixtures (BUR, AVL, BOU, CPL, WOL, SOU, BHA, SHU, NEW, WHM)
        - Have yielded (6,5,2,2,8,5,2,0,8,2)

Maybe Norwich is the catch up & he gets a monster haul though who knows, game makes no sense sometimes

Wolves are a funny one. Likely to score 2 or 3 vs Man City then struggle vs Southampton. I think they’re the most well equipped team to use your strength against you, if that makes any sense. Just not sure I’d rely on any of their players for double attacking returns.

i can see the fuzz with players being injured after the deadline but Arsenal home to Norwich is good, Auba is mine and i will just be careful with my vice cap, probably Fernandes and in that scenario confident that lightning won´t struck twice-) and if it does well nothing to do about it. Jimenez for the ones who got him, as vc could be a smart move?

At what point do you start defensively blocking your exposure to explosive players?

For example, my rival 35 points behind has gone Salah on WC while I have Mane. One Salah captaincy haul pretty much wipes out my lead.

Would you swap Mane to Salah ahead of GW33 (AVL) to protect rank?

    1. iL PiStOlErO
      • 4 Years
      3 years, 9 months ago

Depends on the rest of the team but yeah I would block him with Mo. Pretty much same players, you can't lose much either way so why risk Mo haul.

Depends on the players and depends on the circumstances.

Wouldn't have an issue swapping those players as they're likely about as good anyway, so you're just reducing potential variance.

Just don't do it at the cost of more valuable improvements elsewhere. If you have an actual weakness (which owning Mane isn't) then address that first.

between a and b for me, but when it all comes down to dust, al three could get clean sheets or score, Wolves do have a game from time to time where they just can´t, like vs Brighon right before the break. Leicester everton game could be a tight affair and Bou looked really off the pace but at the same time desperate times for them might be a factor in mind.

Sorry for no clear answer. I would perhaps look closely on those teams involved this week and then maybe re-evaluate then?

BBC showing another PL game today (Norwich vs Everton). But showing the first half on BBC2 and then the second half on BBC1. This is why I don't like the BBC having football. They don't take it seriously. Why are they switching channels?

They also over hype every football match they have because they don't have much of it. It is Norwich vs Everton. Not that great a match. Think I will watch Man Utd vs Sheff Utd instead.

not sure how that works in england but with the norwegian broadcaster NRK if a program or events is moved from one channel to another if you watch it as a a stream from the homepage of nrk.no you overcome that problem (that is, if you watch it on a computer or smart tele)

not sure you have that in BBC though?

There are millions of people in the UK who don't like or want to watch football. They would be very upset if the programme they like was cancelled to show "22 men kicking a ball around". Hence why the BBC, to prevent thousands of complaints, will swap channels. Remember this world is made of two kinds of people. those who love the beautiful game and those who couldn't give two figs about it.

I'd rather press a button than watch the ads on Sky, BT, ITV etc, plus your not be a charged to watch.

There have been some terrible "Super Sundays" that receive the same hype treatment. Sky are also guilty of moving sports around from the main event channel, admittedly not with the football.

Personally think BBC should just have had football on one channel and put a note to say The one show is on BBC 2 for the 10 minutes prior to show start time and 5 minutes afterwards

I would happily swap channels every 10 minutes if that's what was required , it's good to have it back

Jesus will be rotated normally imo, not certain about MU defense, Mount is rotation risk, Sarr is good, but his team mates not.

I think Jesus is a great 'wildcard' pick but i may bottle it and switch back to rashford. Mount's minutes have been great this season and chelsea have arguably the best remaining fixtures out of all the teams so I want an attacker.

Remember gw1 when Sterling was used as a striker and scored a hattie. Now with Sane back he may get that role again.

Doesn't make much sense for Pep to utilize sane as a common starter. Also makes less sense to not play Jesus frequently when aguero is injured. If I was Jesus, I'd expect to be starting now

        No faith in the program?
I think the match tonight will make my decision if I go with a defender or not.

        If not:
Would you rather have double Wolves? or Aurier?

I have Patricio and Doherty (+ unorthodox TAA + VvD.) Aurier is more explosive option and Saiss+Doh better choice also imo. Wolves have been tight with Boly. MU def looked shaky. Whether it was balance as said or not, I'd want to see it fixed before getting their def.

That tree isn't as fast as VvD for example and that can be an issue. De Gea is also small liability. I expect them to concede and score even more, since with Bruno and Pogba they now have the creativity they desperately needed earlier.

140 point gap closed in 7gws, which is pretty crazy(have used bb and tc in that time) 328k to 41k.

Slender lead, and he still has his bb,tc and fh to play.

    Will be interesting run in!

yeah, agree with this. If you're going down this route then no point in waiting. They could easily score against city.

However I'd look into having a better squad depth with the tight schedule, but each to their own of course
