How has behind-closed-doors football had an impact on the Premier League?

There was plenty of discussion ahead of the Premier League’s mid-June resumption about what effect the congested fixture schedule, playing behind closed doors and the increase in permitted substitutions would have on the game.

Would more goals be scored? Would home advantage evaporate? And would rotation be off the charts?

It’s still early days in terms of the numbers, with two-and-a-bit Gameweeks far too small a sample pool from which to draw any proper conclusions.

But with this week representing our only real breather until after Gameweek 37+, we thought it was worth using the time to see if there are any early trends we can at least keep an eye on ahead of some more meaningful analysis later in the summer.

FPL Lessons Learned from Gameweek 32+

Considering some of the weekends I've had during the last few months it was not the worst by far.

Eeesh, thats quite steep. if u are gonna do this I'd maybe hold off on Mount > Pulisic this week and then do it for free next week. I think Sterling is a good option tho. I'd probably just do Auba, Barnes > someone

Repost from old article. The more I try to draft my WC team the more I am tempted to go big at the back and up top:

    Lloris Gazzaniga
    TAA VVD AWB Doherty Alonso
    Martial Mahrez (Mount Foden Doucoure)
    Rashford Jesus Kane

Ideas on how to best use of 2fts here with 0.2m itb. Sarr is the main issue but tricky price point and would need to downgrade someone to do Sarr > one of Pulisic/Mahrez/Son

    DDG
    Taa Doherty Aurier
    Salah Kdb Sarr Bruno
    Dcl Rashford Jimmy

The small sample size is of course a valid point but I don't think it's really misleading if I've repeatedly acknowledged it myself and stressed the limitations of it. Folk have been and continue to be interested in the effects of what these new conditions are having and, as I've said above, it's merely looking at any early trends and seeing if they continue over the weeks ahead.

    Pope
    TAA Doherty Maguire
    Mane KDB Fernandes Bergwijn
    Jimenez Rashford DCL
    Martin Guendouzi Simpson Ngakia

No idea what to really do with 2 fts here...
Ngakia + DCL > Aurier + Nketiah to do Bergwijn > Mahrez after, maybe?

In relation to the article it feels like there’s a lot less football being played too. There’s now two drinks breaks and more time being spent making substitutions. Officials are still only adding a few minutes of stoppage time so I feel like we’re losing up to 10 minutes of game time from previous.

    1. Brosstan
      • 9 Years

Its absolutely ridiculous the water breaks. Ad money speaking... the "summer" argument is just a poorly crafted excuse

    Martinez
    TAA - Doherty - Saiss - Lascelles

the lack of ball boys also slows down game a lot. Those extra few seconds make a big difference at elite level

That, water breaks, subs, no fans(in some cases) and then the lack of sharpness after 3 months all lead to less goals

Still got WC & TC to play, anyone thinking TC Salah @ Villa?

    TC Salah, KDB, Fernandes, Martial
    Jimmy, Rashford, Vardy

    McCarthy, Sarr, Taylor, Holgate

After the three difficult fixtures, is it worth getting in Ings. I’m still not convinced that he’s a good FPL asset..

18 goals is worth a lot of FPL points.

The Grealish to utd rumours are gathering pace - reports on BBC this morning that he’s now “bought a house in the north west”

Wondering whether he won’t clash with Rashford’s positioning though - if you load up him & Marcus in the comparison tool & look at both their touch heatmaps & average position by GW they occupy pretty much the same patch of turf

So one of them would have to vacate a position they’ve been going from strength to strength in over the last 12-18 months

If I were Olé I wouldn't be wanting him. He has an attitude problem, and that's not needed at OT currently. They might have enough in Bruno F to keep Poggers there, and between that front line and the Fred Macca dynamic Utd are sitting pretty.

I'm of the view he's way above the Fred/Macca standard and would improve United

That relocates Grealish backwards positionally though - taking him out of that attacking left sided midfield role in which he’s made his name...

My comment was that he's a better player than those already at United.

But he hasn’t been playing the same position as Fred or McTominay - Do you mean he’s a better defensive midfielder than them?

He hasn’t played there at all this season... seems strange...

If Grealish comes in, does that imply that Jaden Sancho is not gonna happen?

Someone who plays primarily on the right (like Sancho) would make more sense imo

Those rumours & links with Sancho seem more creative wishful thinking by Utd’s PR team than reality though

His numbers in the Bundesliga this season have been ridiculous (17G 17A in 33 games) - looks like he’s outgrown that league, at only 20 too - surely it’s a 100m+ minimum for someone of that age, ability - and the homegrown passport factor too

      Seems an odd addition

Centre back, defensive midfielder okay but attacking mid - not so sure

Mata is getting old tho & lingard doesn’t cut it

You've answered your own question there. They need an extra attacking midfielder. Not personally sure £80 million on Grealish is the wisest solution to that problem though.

You’ve just relocated Rashford out of the position he’s became so lethal in for the last couple of seasons

        1. diesel001

He'll be lethal on the right too. He has the instinct to score goals.

            • 14 Years

And maybe that’s the plan... he *could* be lethal on the right... he also *could* be lethal up front... but both are speculative

We know though, that he *is* lethal on the left - it’s a position he’s pretty much made his own, with his signature cutting in into his right foot being pretty unstoppable at times

So the Grealish signing opens that strange can of worms of either having either Rashford or Grealish vacate a position they’ve been going from strength to strength in over the last 12-18 months - just seems a little odd

Then again that seems to be how Utd roll in the transfer market the last 5-6 years

I think you're making too much of a positional overlap, they are very different types of players. Grealish takes the ball from much deeper positions and more of a ball player than Rashford.

Yeah Grealish isn’t really a forward, and Rashford isn’t really a midfielder but I still don’t think you can fit him & Rashford into the same team without asking them to compromise positionally on roles in which they’ve both excelled in this season

And I don’t think it makes sense to ask one (or both) of them to make that compromise

And pay 80m for it into the bargain - seems a bit of a strange one

Well they do need an extra striker once Ighalo leaves so maybe that's the point. Grealish will play on the left so Rashford can move up front when required.

Rashford can play more central if necessary and vacate the left hand side for Grealish..I think hed be a good signing for most of the top six.

I personally don’t see a massive amount of sense in signing him - especially for that money

Or Maddison, who they were also linked with

But their transfers haven’t always made a lot of sense in the last few seasons

Very true. Gone are the days when premium money was only paid for the best in the league

Utd now paying 80m for a player thats invovled in a relegation battle and wouldnt make the top 5 of man city midfield

          2. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
            • 14 Years

I actually think he’d do a decent job for for a team that needed an attacking left wing forward/midfielder

But Utd don’treally need that - it’s one of the few positions they have an absolute diamond of a player in already, so for that club I don’t see him as a great fit, unless they want to start taking risks on shuffling players around the park

That can work superbly of course (Henry springs to mind) - but is it a risk they need to take... is it really that broken that they need to fix it?

Utd have bigger transfer fish to fry than that they souls be focusing on imo
