Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 33+?

Fantasy Premier League managers must decide between the best options at Manchester United and Liverpool for the Gameweek 33+ captaincy.

The two clubs come into this next round of action atop the popularity charts for the armband, but there is still plenty to decipher when picking the right skipper.

As ever, the Captain Sensible article is here to help you do that with data comparisons of each candidate’s statistical form, as well as that of their upcoming opposition’s defences.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those with a valid subscription can read it in full.

Captain Poll

So soon after letting down his followers in the 3-0 win over Sheffield United, Bruno Fernandes (£8.8m) is back at the top of the captain poll once again.

A blistering double-figure haul in Gameweek 32+ has handed the Manchester United man 34.5% of the vote this week.

Despite that Gameweek 31+ blank, the Portuguese midfielder has a remarkably consistent record since joining the Red Devils. In eight Premier League appearances, Fernandes has already racked up five goals, three assists and, as far as we know, retains control of the club’s penalties.

An unfortunate blank at Manchester City on Thursday night was not enough to stop the support of Mohamed Salah (£12.6m) for the Gameweek 33+ captaincy.

 1

The Egyptian was denied early by Ederson (£6.0m) and the post as Liverpool crashed to a 4-0 defeat, a result that 19.5% of our voters are convinced will produce a fierce backlash when Aston Villa come to Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

Indeed, Salah is a reliable asset at home, averaging 10 points per game in his last six league matches there. An improved Aston Villa defence stands in his way for Gameweek 33+, but Dean Smith’s men have only kept one clean sheet since they tightened things up.

Solid returns in their last home match are enough for Anthony Martial (£8.2m) and Marcus Rashford (£9.1m) to act as differential options for the captaincy in this poll.

The Frenchman scored a hat-trick against Sheffield United, 10.5% of the voters reading more into that than his Gameweek 32+ shotless blank at Brighton.

Meanwhile, Rashford’s midweek two-pointer has done little to weaken the resolve of the 8.6% backing the England international, who registered two assists in his last home outing.

Despite coming into a Gameweek 33+ meeting with Crystal Palace devoid of form, Jamie Vardy (£9.7m) completes the top-five but is unlikely to play a huge part in the debate. He has two goals since Gameweek 19 and is backed by just 4.1% of our voters.

Kevin De Bruyne‘s (£10.7m) latest world-class performance has not been enough to allow him entry into the top-five for the latest captaincy popularity contest, perhaps on account of playing 90 minutes against Liverpool, and a quick turnaround before the Southampton game.

Those interested in the Liverpool attack do seem to be presented with an opportunity for serious gains if the performance of Sadio Mané (£12.5m) in this poll is anything to go by. Just 2.7% of our voters have backed him for the Gameweek 33+ armband.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.5m), Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.8m), Mason Greenwood (£4.4m), Harry Kane (£10.9m) and Christian Pulisic (£7.1m) are the only other options backed by more than 1%.

OK it's a dangerous game but if anyone's up for it, I want to play Pep Roulette. I've seen a lot of posts about Foden, Sterling & particularly Mahrez. And others questioning KDB being potentially benched. Like me, some are on a FH and it's a great opportunity to jump on low-owned City assets. So with the massive caveat that this is all a minefield, this is my prediction:

    Ederson
    Walker Fernandinho Laporte Mendy
    KDB Rodri Gundogan
    Mahrez Jesus Sterling

Basically, I think away from home & given the way Southampton play Pep may want the intensity of KDB & Bernardo, the physicality of Rodri & that back line, & the width & pace of Mahrez & Sterling.

I think against Newcastle midweek we may see KDB rested, in what will likely be a similar game to Burnley at home. Against a side defending deep, city at home may play Gundogan with technical players in front again: the two silvas & Foden - possibly with Sterling false 9 to bring movement.

With such high ownership, I don't think there's a convincing enough case for going without KDB this week even on a FH. Mahrez would be the best to double up with, and Mendy may be worth a punt.

There is a very small chance that both Silvas do not start together at Southampton given the minutes played over the last 10 days or so.

I think you're right - but he could easily play BSilva in the KDB spot for Southampton, and draft KDB back in for a deep Newcastle team

After only 48 hours I can see a lot more rotation. Maybe Zinkenko and Celly(?) at wingback, both Silvas and Mahrez in attacking midfield behind Jesus.

I agree with most of that, especially Zinchenko - it's really hard to tell when Mendy will play - there's no pattern to the type of games he usually starts in. I think there is a slight pattern for some of the others though, eg it's slightly less likely Dilva will play in this game based on the type of games he usually plays (mostly home games against defensive sides)

You mention the intensity of KDB and Bernardo but Bernardo isn't in that team. It's therefore quite likely that Bernardo does in fact play, in place of KDB. However Bernardo could also potentially play in place of Sterling who also could do with a rest. Alternatively Foden could play again in that role in which he did so well yesterday. Also you didn't mention David Silva a single time but he is also available. Not saying you're wrong - I think your points are very much valid. It's just so hard to play Pep Roulette.

Sorry just seen that you did in fact mention the two silvas. Too many options!

No you're right it was a typo - I initially had Bernardo in there instead of Gundogan but looked at the minutes and it seems Pep just loves Gundogan these days! So I agree & think there is a big chance Bernardo plays, I just think the chances of the others I listed is slightly bigger ha

I had a look at David Silva and his minutes just seem very managed.. he's started 17 of 32 in the league, which correlates with Pep's comments ages ago about using him more sparingly in his final season. So looking at the two games this week I just have a hunch it's more likely he'll play against Newcastle, given the type of game Silva usually starts in.

Can’t believe I’m getting cold feet about selling Son...

Can I justify keeping him for the Bournemouth game? Even in poor Spurs performances he’s picked up points.

But the only other move would be Rashford + Guendouzi to Greenwood + Mahrez. Madness? Or will Greewnood play?

Good point, that was my thinking last night. Downgrading Son to Mahrez/Willian/Puli could upgrade Guendouzi into a playable fifth mid like ASM this week too. Decent moves?

Cool, thanks. Reckon Mahrez over Chelsea options? He has seemed more reliable this season. I did consider Rash+Guendouzi to Greenwood+Mahrez but as good a prospect as Greenwood is I guess Rashford isn’t someone I need to change right now.

You could make your bench cheaper though that probably would not affect that starting XI.

I'd be looking at something similar but I can't see Greenwood starting. As you say though, it's not far away from my current team either!

        Might save

I think the most predictable aspect of Peps player management is how he uses Sterling. He either starts and plays >80 mins or is benched and doesn't feature at all. Knowing that I either get a full game from sterling or another crack at the whip with my first sub was a major factor in why I chose him over Mahrez. Not having to worry about substitutions when the clock hits 60 mins and late in the game cameos blocking my first sub makes the game far more enjoyable. Cue Mahrez 90mins + hatty.

Not easy KdB looking a risk. Vardy home facing palace and Jimi against weak Arsenal defense
