The FPL Gameweek 34+ team news and injury updates

Gameweek 33+ hasn’t even finished yet but we’re already looking ahead to Gameweek 34+, the deadline for which is at 17:00 BST on Tuesday afternoon.

Seven Premier League managers gave their pre-match press conferences on Monday, with Mikel Arteta facing the media yesterday.

We’ll round up what we’ve heard so far in our team news summary below, with further updates to follow on Tuesday.

Arsenal v Leicester City

James Maddison (hip) and Ben Chilwell (foot) are “big doubts” ahead of Leicester City’s clash with Arsenal.

Speaking to the media, Brendan Rodgers said:

We’ve got doubts over James Maddison and Ben Chilwell. They’re the two that could struggle, but we’ll see how that is today. We’ll just have to wait and see. There’s big doubts over both.

It’s the bottom of Ben’s foot which is giving him pain so we’ll just have to assess that and see what the specialists say. You can play through it. They’ll both be big doubts ahead of the game. We’ll give them every chance.

There was no word on Ayoze Perez (ankle), however.

Calum Chambers (knee), Pablo Mari (ankle), Gabriel Martinelli (knee) and Bernd Leno (knee) remain out, while Mesut Ozil (back) faces a late fitness check ahead of Tuesday’s game.

Lucas Torreira is fit, at least, while Nicolas Pepe may return to contention after missing the win over Wolves to attend the birth of his child.

Watford v Norwich City

Todd Cantwell will miss Norwich City’s trip to Watford on Tuesday night with a hamstring problem, having picked up the issue during the Canaries’ defeat to Brighton.

Daniel Farke said on Monday:

He doesn’t feel comfortable. I hope that he will be available [for Gameweek 35+]. We scanned him, he doesn’t seem too bad.

The City head coach also confirmed that Alex Tettey (knee) and Kenny McLean (ankle) are doubts for the game at Vicarage Road, saying:

We’ll have to make some late decisions as a few players are struggling with muscle injuries or hits or whatever. Kenny McLean rolled his ankle and we will have to wait. A little question mark behind him. Alex Tettey is also having some problems with his knee. I think they both should be fine.

Moritz Leitner (hernia), Grant Hanley (hamstring), Christoph Zimmermann (back) and Sam Byram (hamstring) are long-term absenteees.

Nigel Pearson reported no new injury concerns ahead of Tuesday’s game.

Gerard Deulofeu (knee), Isaac Success (Achilles) and Daryl Janmaat (knee) remain out for the season.

Crystal Palace v Chelsea

N’Golo Kante (hamstring) has joined Mateo Kovacic (Achilles) and Fikayo Tomori (muscle) on the sidelines, although the Frenchman’s injury isn’t too serious and he could return in Gameweek 36+.

Speaking to the media, Frank Lampard said:

Kante won’t be in the squad, low-level hamstring injury. We’re hoping it’ll be a week or so. I would expect that we’ll be very lucky to have him for Sheffield United.

[Mateo] Kovacic trained with us today, he’s not ready for this game, hopefully the next. [Fikayo] Tomori is still not ready. He had a small setback in training so hopefully next week. We’re all good after that.

Asked if the out-of-favour Jorginho could replace Kante, Lampard said:

He has handled it professionally and that’s what I would expect. We’ll see with my selection tomorrow [whether he plays]. I don’t want to go into personal details of why I pick my team. They’re just my choices.

Roy Hodgson has confirmed that Martin Kelly (calf) is back in full training for Crystal Palace but the Chelsea game may come too early for the budget Fantasy defender.

The Palace boss said:

We’re still monitoring one or two from the game at the weekend. Nothing’s changed in terms of long-term injuries, although Martin Kelly is now back in training. But it was his first day today, so it would be a bit early to throw him into the deep end.

Sheffield United

John Fleck (groin), John Lundstram (shoulder) and Luke Freeman (unspecified) will all be missing for the next two weeks or so but Chris Wilder didn’t report any fresh injuries and indeed welcomed back Jack O’Connell at the weekend.

Speaking ahead of the visit of Wolves, Wilder said:

There were a few tired bodies on Sunday afternoon but we can’t rotate it too much because I have to make sure we still have that fluency and rhythm to our play.

Brighton and Hove Albion

Graham Potter confirmed that Jose Izquierdo (knee) was his only absentee for the match against Liverpool.

Steven Alzate is being monitored daily after groin surgery was cancelled earlier this year and Potter said he was “struggling” in training.

The Rest

We should expect to hear from at least six managers on Tuesday, namely the ones whose teams are in action on Wednesday: Pep Guardiola, Steve Bruce, Nuno Espirito Santo, David Moyes, Sean Dyche and Jurgen Klopp.

Six clubs (including Manchester United) have Premier League fixtures on Thursday, however, and there are no guarantees that we’ll hear from the head coaches of those sides tomorrow – some will face the media ahead of the Fantasy Premier League deadline, some after it.

Everton and Spurs are in Gameweek 33+ action on Monday evening, of course, so Carlo Ancelotti and Jose Mourinho may give us some words of wisdom after full-time.

More detailed information and predicted line-ups can be found in the Team News tab, which is being gradually refreshed on Monday and Tuesday.

Keep an eye on our Twitter feed on Tuesday morning, too, when we’ll post the daily list of press conference times.

Doherty + Jimenez --> Saiss + Kane (FT) to chase 50 pts in ML when two rivals have both D and J?

Is Saiss enough of a differential there though? That said it's only 50 points and I'm being outscored 50+ points by most people each week atm so you can overhaul that in no time

You'd have to say he probably isn't. Need a < 5.1m DEF so maybe Aurier?

Aurier has a high ceiling. Problem is he's got no chance of ever reaching it

Yeah could put a dent in the lead. As long as they don't get Kane.

Is Rash + Jimi to Greenwood + Kane -4 a good move?

Spurs don't look great even if it is Bournemouth next.

Just be prepared on switching quality assets with quality assets, they could turn up anytime e.g. Rash and Salah run riots at the wrong time we transferred them out ... but yes no risks no gains!

I just need Bruno. Suicidal to have ignored him thus far. And need to lose a United asset.

    Hi!

2 FT, 0.2 ITB. Advice greatly appreciated! Looks like I need Greenwood in, ASM out and another City Attacker!

    Ederson
    TAA, AWB, Egan
    KDB, Salah, Fernandes, Martial
    Aubameyang, Jimenez, Nketiah

    (McCarthy, ASM, Basham, Lascelles)

    A) Aubameyang, ASM & AWB -> Greenwood, Sterling & Digne (-4) (Leaves 0.0 ITB so need to do tonight!)
    B) Aubameyang & AWB -> Greenwood & Digne
    C) ASM -> Foden
    D) Aubameyang, Nketiah, ASM & AWB -> Kane, Greenwood, Foden & Tarkowski (-8!)
    E) Something Else!

    Cheers

You think mahrez will start? I currently only have him front of my bench as I can’t take another 1pter! My other four midfielders look better options this week perhaps. Still very unsure

I currently have no Spurs and no plans to get any in.

Feels suicidal given their fixtures, but they're so frustrating and unpredicatable to own.

    I have a solid team
    Pope
    TAA Doherty Taylor
    Saka Salah Fernandes KDB
    Kane Greenwood Rashford

    Martin Soyuncu Alonso Cantwell

I can replace taylor and Saka with Laporte and Soy and have good fuxtures bar Pope.

But should i WC then in GW36 or wait til GW37 after the cup games are being played and we'll know about the starting chances of City Arsenal ManU and Chelsea assets in Gw37.

This would mean to play BB in 38 and i am a bit worried that GW38 will be high scoring and 5defenders wont be the thing but Taylor Lamptey Martinez all have solid GW38 fixs and are cheap as hell.
Also if Foden starts in the cup, he might start GW38 for BB and will be rested in 37.
I know that Pepe is Roulette but we all knew that KDB was gonna be rested yesternight and we know now that KDB Foden will play the coming GW...

The good side in playing it in GW36 is the fixture swing for Ings Calvert-lewin and Richarlison start there and i could avoid cup players early.

But i would only change 2 or 3 players now. GW37 is a golden chance to change to a team without all the United assets, Foden etc.

I have a decent enough team until 37.
Why should i change it just for the sake of getting a new gk and maybe foden for this week..

Just a shame that Alonso had to lose his place so fast.

    The Review: GW 33+

Hi everyone, welcome to the latest edition of The Review. Presented below is my statistical analysis of the Premier League action in GW 33+ with a view on GW34+:

(Data taken from FFScout with permission)

    1) Mason Greenwood with two goals for Man United with a xG of ∼0.12 makes him the most overperforming player statistically this week. Is he a lethal finisher or a youngster brimming with confidence who will eventually run out of luck? Post restart, Greenwood has scored thrice with a combined xG of ∼0.46 which reflects serious overperformance even for the most clinical of finishers. In isolation, I think that Bruno Fernandes, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford are the best United picks registering between them over ∼80% of United’s big chances post restart. But Greenwood’s catch is his value, and at £4.5m he can allow for serious upgrades elsewhere. The likes of him and Phil Foden are throwing the game wide open, team value has gone out of the window.

    2) Is it worth ditching a United defender to triple up on their attack? Yes, I think so. Post restart, United are only second to Man City for big chances and their mid-priced assets are offering tremendous value. I don’t think this is the week to do it though. I don’t expect Villa to be as open as Bournemouth, they will make it hard for United. Their improvement defensively post lockdown has been extremely noticeable. Pre restart, Villa were conceding ∼12.21 shots in the box per game (compared to 5.00 now) and ∼3.18 big chances per game (compared to 0.80 now). However, over this spell they have one of the lowest xG’s from open play hence there is a good chance of a United clean sheet this GW.

    3) Is it worth holding onto Riyad Mahrez? Yes. I guess unless your name is Pep Guardiola, it’s impossible to know whether or not he is starting this week so one can only make an educated guess. A quick glance through the City forums tells me that the vast majority of fans expect him to start, and when he does start at home he averages ∼9.29 FPL points. I don’t think he is worth selling when the ceiling is as high. It’s not as if he has a low floor either – there’s always a chance he can come off the bench and wreck havoc against tired legs.

    4) “Just five shots inside the box at ∼44 mins per shot inside the box and zero big chances registered over four appearances is extremely uncharacteristic of a Man City striker. Gabriel Jesus has been peripheral in terms of FPL goal involvement.” I wrote this about Gabriel Jesus last GW. His numbers have certainly been more promising this week. Three big chances in the game and a xG of ∼1.40 suggests that Jesus was unlucky not to come out of this game with any FPL returns to his credit. He may not be as prolific a finisher as Agüero but with the ridiculous amount of quality chances City create, a goal is coming – surely.

    5) Wolves have lost their attacking fluidity post the restart. Raúl Jiménez’s stats have dropped off a little because he isn’t getting the service. In the last four GW’s pre restart, Wolves created 12 big chances as compared to just the five post restart. These stats are worrying for Jiménez’s owners who’d be hoping Wolves pick up their form quickly. Another player who has slightly disappointed me with how he’s faring statistically is Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, who has accumulated just one big chance in the three games he has played. He’s the kind of player who can brace in any fixture so whether or not to sell him is an extremely tricky call. I can only wish you luck in any decision as a Salah owner you make!

    6) No team has conceded fewer big chances and big chances per game than Brighton post the Premier League restart. This is seriously impressive, given that Brighton have played Leicester, Man United and Arsenal in three of their four fixtures in this period. They will be up against Liverpool and Man City in the coming weeks and I don’t think they will make it too easy for the big boys when they come to town.

    7) Who have been the whipping boys since the restart? Translation: Who are the teams I should target as a FPL manager? Sheffield United and Bournemouth come out on top here conceding 2.60 and 2.50 big chances per game respectively. This might be good news for the owners of Raúl Jiménez and Harry Kane, who’d be hoping that Sheffield United and Bournemouth continue to be as obliging as they have been in recent weeks. Contrary to popular opinion, the likes of Norwich and West Ham haven’t been as bad relatively – conceding 1.75 big chances per game since the restart.

    8) Is Kane a good captaincy shout vs Bournemouth? Kane’s numbers since the restart have been extremely encouraging. I am typing this before the Everton game – Kane, despite having played a game less than his counterparts, is still top for big chances in the league since the restart. I just mentioned how obliging Bournemouth have been in terms of big chances conceded, so if you add two and two up Kane is likely to do well. However, there are a few caveats. I’m not sure I trust Spurs enough. It’s a ballsy call to back Kane over a City asset this week. Pep and his men will be out for blood. There’s also the fact that Spurs will have just two days of rest compared to four for Bournemouth.

    9) I watched the West Ham game and they looked going forward once again this week. Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen were the most impressive assets. I wrote about Antonio last week and he continues to top the tables for the highest number of big chances recorded over the past six GW’s of all players in the league making him West Ham’s chief goal threat. Bowen recorded two big chances created and had a big chance to score himself. He seems to have nailed down a starting position given his stellar performances off late and will continue to be in the points if he keeps going at this rate.

    10) Arsenal’s defence is showing serious signs of improvement under Mikel Arteta. Arsenal are still a work in progress defensively but some of the solidity that Arteta has tried to instil in order to make Arsenal harder to beat is visible. Over the past three games, granted fixtures have been somewhat favorable, Arsenal have conceded just ∼0.67 big chances per game as compared to ∼2.42 big chances per game in rest of Arteta’s tenure. Under Emery, Arsenal conceded ∼1.61 big chances per game which again reiterates the point of massive progress being made recently. Emiliano Martínez looks as if he has a reliable, safe pair of hands and has been a revelation for FPL managers who have invested thus far.

    11) Jamie Vardy finally caught my eye this week accumulating the highest number of big chances of all players this GW. He was gifted his first rather fortuitously courtesy a slip at the back from Palace’s Mamadou Sakho but there was no looking back once he notched. His second was a finish full of confidence, and it gives plenty of food for thought to FPL managers who might have written off Vardy for the season already. Leicester were joint with City for big chances created this GW, which is worth noting given Leicester’s barren spell in the creativity charts off late. Vardy is now up against a resurgent Arsenal defence this GW, before the tastier fixture versus an out of sorts Bournemouth next GW.

    12) What is the best time to Free Hit? I think playing it in the GW 38+ could be a good idea. History suggests that the last round of fixtures in the Premier League is more high scoring than usual and with all games kicking off at the same time, there is a high chance of early team leaks. Imagine the City team sheet getting leaked before Norwich at home. Imagine. I read a piece on this by my friend and FFS poster AK and he echoes my thoughts. I will quote some of his points here:

*34 goals in nine games were witnessed in the last round of the Bundesliga this year. That is an average of ∼3.78 goals per match compared to an average of ∼3.22 goals per match in the rest of the Bundesliga games. Final rounds are usually high scoring

*Players chasing records (Golden Boot, for example) will have added incentive

*Teams with something to play for usually turn up, especially against opposition that are on holiday already

*Expect mixed lineups with many youngsters getting debuts. Opens up possibilities of crazy punts. I remember Greenwood starting as a ∼£4.5m forward for United last year at home to Cardiff

Currently 33k OR. And sitting atop ML by 18 points with essentially the same team as rival.

Is it too risky to dump Salah and/or Jimenez to accommodate Kane if he does well today?

PS, fwiw - If I got rid of Salah and Jim, I could afford Martial and Kane. Otherwise, it's more likely Foden and Kane.

Dumping Salah is always a risk. IMO people on here are buying too much into Man City and Chelsea assets

Touché on dropping Salah. I suppose the question is more: "Is TAA enough Liverpool cover?"

Or maybe "Am I chasing OR too much?"

      You can win without Salah.

Martial performs better at Old Trafford tho.

Kane is a goalscorer and i think it's a calculated risk.

    B) Greenwood, Jimenez, Nketiah, Digne (Basham) (Sterling next GW)
    C) Kane, Jimenez, Foden, AWB (Nketiah)

    Please need some opinnions???

    De Gea
    TAA-Saiss-Holgate
    Salah-Son-Bruno-Saka
    Vardy-Rashford-Jimenez

    Martinez, Taylor, Lascelles, Guendouzi

I have 2 FT and 1 million itb

I really have to get KDB, so this is currently my idea:Rashford&Guendouzi&De Gea to Reina&KDB&Greenwood. Is that stupid plan? Or do you make better idea?

Im always a bit ambivalent when watching a team whose players I want to bring in for next game week.

    A) They play like crap and get no points this game week, meaning less people will bring in for next game week, but I will also be less confident about bringing them in
    B) They play well and its a slam dunk transfer in, but tons of others will join the bandwagon.

What do you guys who are considering Spurs assets hoping for? I think its A for me.

Its such a good feeling when you are rhe obly one to bring them in and tgey exolode then.

A lot of people don't actually watch the games but notice who scores / gets the headlines. Best case scenario is hope your players looks really dangerous but is unlucky not to brace.

Depends for how long I'm getting a player. If it's just a punt for couple of weeks, than I don't really care whether that player do well or not (in current GW), I'll just go for it.

If it's a long term player, than B.

DCL and Jimenez to Kane and Greenwood for a -4? The problem is that it gives me a benching headache as I can't bench KDB or Mahrez, or Bruno or Martial. Don't fancy benching Willian or Ings either. Also, Liverpool will likely rotate and I have both Gomez and TAA with only Lascelles (against City) ready to step in if one.oe.borh of them get dropped. So maybe I should focus on my defence? But I do like the thoughts of Kane against Bournemouth

Salah out to Mahrez or sterling? Also for hit debating Duda to Foden (newc) for -4 (or just play DCL Vs Southampton)? Just think newc might absol get smashed

    Neither
    Both or just
    Salah out?

If not captaining Salah I don't think he is justified and Liverpool look off

    Help!

    Rash Kane
