The case for Kane and Son as Spurs exploit Newcastle’s defensive crisis

Newcastle 1-3 Spurs

  • Goals: Matt Ritchie (£5.3m) | Son Heung-min (£9.6m), Harry Kane x2 (£10.9m)
  • Assists: Giovani Lo Celso (£7.3m), Steven Bergwijn (£7.0m), Erik Lamela (£5.7m)
  • Bonus Points: Kane x3, Ritchie x2, Lo Celso x1, Son x1

Following a recent dip in Fantasy appeal, Harry Kane (£10.9m) and Son Heung-min (£9.6m) were back in the goals again as Spurs ran out 3-1 winners at Newcastle on Wednesday evening.

With a Leicester side short of Caglar Söyüncü (£4.9m) and a porous Crystal Palace outfit the final two opponents for Jose Mourinho’s men this season, there are arguably worse options to take last-ditch punts on in Gameweeks 37+ and 38+.

However, it must be said that Kane’s recent display, which took his goal-tally since the Premier League restart to four, was more workmanlike than his 12-point score would indicate.

Yes, he did well to get on the end of two chances in the second half but they happened to be his only shots of the game.

That said, most objective onlookers would agree that Kane has been unfortunate not to come away with more attacking returns in recent matches. Accordingly, there is perhaps still cause for hope against Leicester and Crystal Palace, especially as he hit an important landmark at Newcastle: his 200th career goal.

“200 goals at this age, with the remaining years that he has in front of him, it’s very normal that he speaks about going for 200 more. (Kane) is a fantastic player, a top goalscorer, an ambitious guy, young. He has a lot in front of him. So let’s go for 200 more. I believe let’s go for 200 more.” – Jose Mourinho

Son was quieter than his usual self against Newcastle, but his 11th goal of the season does mean the South Korean has outscored Kane over the last four matches. Worth knowing for anyone considering a punt on Spurs asset. In that time, he has racked up 25 points to the centre-forward’s 18.

However, anyone looking at Son does have to be conscious of his increased rotation threat compared to Kane. Not only has he already been benched once since the Premier League restart, but Mourinho also admitted on Wednesday evening that he came close to not starting the former Bayer Leverkusen man from the beginning. Could that indicate a rest for the Leicester game?

“I had the feeling of starting the game with fresh players and leave Lucas and Son on the bench. My feeling was if they go on the bench when they come in, they come in tired. They would be tired anyway. So I thought it was better to start with the same players who started against Arsenal. Let us see where they could go, like it happened with Gio [Lo Celso] and Lucas and we had, of course, a couple more who were really, really tired.” – Jose Mourinho

The issue with Spurs midfielders is, of course, the fact that Mourinho has so many of them at his disposal. In starting Son and Lucas Moura (£7.0m) at Newcastle, he was forced to leave Steven Bergwijn (£7.0m) and Erik Lamela (£5.7m) on the bench, both of whom came on to get assists for Kane’s goals. Either one of them could come in for the Leicester game, especially as Moura was taken off on Wednesday night.

“I had the feeling that the impact could be done by really, really fresh players. So for Stevie and Lamela to come from the bench with that energy I think was very important for us, because for us it was the fourth match with two days in between.” – Jose Mourinho

It was initially assumed to be a knock for the Brazilian but the Spurs boss confirmed it was nothing more than fatigue. Still, in the current circumstances, that is more than enough reason to bench him for the next Premier League outing, scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

“I don’t think it’s an issue (Moura coming off). I think it’s just super fatigued, exhausted people.” – Jose Mourinho

For all the potential possessed by Kane and Son, it must be said that Newcastle were unfortunate to be on the end of such an unflattering scoreline at St James’ Park, as they were busy in front of goal as well. In fact, Hugo Lloris (£5.3m) ended the evening with more saves to his name than opposite number Martin Dúbravka (£5.1m).

A goal for Matt Ritchie (£5.3m) and energetic displays from Miguel Almiron (£5.8m) and Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.3m) might be enough to justify inclusion in end-of-season squads, especially with Brighton and an out-of-sorts Liverpool defence on the horizon for Newcastle between now and Gameweek 38+.

However, Fantasy managers may also want to consider attackers who face the Magpies in that time as their already painful defensive crisis worsened on Wednesday evening.

Fabian Schär (£5.0m) was taken off with a dislocated shoulder in the closing stages and, after the game, Steve Bruce revealed that Jamaal Lascelles (£4.3m) had undergone surgery for his ankle injury.

That means, ahead of Gameweek 37+, there are flags against a total of seven Newcastle defenders, Jetro Willems (£4.3m), Ciaran Clark (£4.3m), Paul Dummett (£4.3m), Danny Rose (£5.3m) and Florian Lejeune (£4.3m) the stricken players, alongside Schär and Lascelles.

“With turnaround being quick we have to look forward to next season. We are down the bare bones, we have had eight or nine people missing.” – Steve Bruce

Newcastle United XI (4-2-3-1): Dúbravka; Yedlin (Lazaro 55′), Fernández, Schär, Krafth; Shelvey, Bentaleb (M Longstaff 86′); Ritchie, Almirón, Saint-Maximin; Gayle (Joelinton 69′).

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris; B Davies, Sánchez, Alderweireld, Aurier; Winks, Sissoko; Son, Lo Celso (Lamela 62′), Moura (Bergwijn 57′); Kane (Vertonghen 90+1′).

Fine to hold for the final day?

    Pope
    TAA - Doherty - Egan
    Salah - Bruno - Martial - KDB - Mahrez
    Jimi - Ings

    3.9 - Greenwood - Lascelles - Robinson

Weak bench but hopefully won’t need more than 1 sub

      Should be.

I'm not expecting many minutes from the city boys, but should come on at least. Mahrez may well start

With 5 subs confirmed next season (more rotation?) what are people’s thoughts on changing (c) chip?

This is a game and we want to score points. The (c) choice is currently way too important in how a week goes and seems increasingly luck based.

If you could change each night (a normal game week of Sat / Sun / Mon would give up to 3 (c) choices if you changed each night).

It would reward proactive FF players, bring an elements of stick or twist and overall re emphasise squad choice over whether you nail (c).

    Thoughts?

Without luck/ variance, does ‘fun’ exist?

        Agree. But...

I think it's the balance between risk/reward from skill and luck.

Captaincy (and triple captaincy) seems to swing the needle slightly more towards luck than my liking.

There's already a huge amount of luck involved in team selection alone imo.

You pick 15 players, more than enough luck and skill there!

It’s more an observation on how huge an impact a single choice has

Captaincy is there as a tool to massively increase variance which means that in any given gameweek anyone can get lucky and beat anyone - it’s how you attract the masses to a game having a high variance short term luck element.

If we all just got given the expected points for our team each week the ‘casual’ wouldn’t bother.

Those who spend a lot of time on the game hate the ‘needless’ variance of captain as in the short term it can negate any ‘skill’ advantage.

Longer term over a season the skill should generally win through

To finish in the top 1k of a 7m player game which has high weekly variance of course you will need to get lucky...,

.... but the harder I practice the luckier I get 😉

I think that mass appeal point is a good one. Alternatively would an option to log in and change a (c) choice drive more regular users?

Being able to change once or twice would be driven by fixtures and still have a lot of luck (say you picked D Silva over other city assets).

Is this what you can do in the CL fantasy game? It’s a nice concept to be able to stick or twist but it also rewards poor decision making even if a lot of luck is involved. Get out of jail free card for casuals!

I think Sky does it as well?

I don’t see it as rewarding poor decisions, but reducing importance of (c) while allowing a bit more punting on choices. I’d expect there still to be blanks and rubbish choices punished

Or just remove the captain chip?

Let's face it, 5 sub rule = cap fails galore and your cap pick will be like a lottery.

No cap chip will make the game more tactical.

        How does that follow?

Captains have been hauling in restart.

Let's be honest, this is a reflection of people going gung-ho into the Sterling captain trap last night when there was plenty of rotation risk in reality.

I’d be equally happy with that, though captains are a part of football!

I just want to tweak the luck element. I’ve scores 504 (c) points ~14 points average. What this would probably do is cut the 13 blanks I’ve had and slightly improve the average score.

I think there is still merit in keeping the captaincy chip. There are many teams that approach the 5-sub thing differently to City with a nailed starting XI and rotating fringe players in at different points in the second half.

What I would like removed is the vice-captaincy. Make it a one shout selection.

As much as I hate it from a variance stand point. It has to stay in the game. It gives managers a weekly decision, it makes for some dramatic highs and lows. It's a fundamental part of the game. And there is a lot of luck in FPL. We just have to deal with that.

Like most big online games the developers will cater heavily to casual players, it doesn’t make sense to
Reward only highly active dedicated players, casual players still make up most of the player base.

The rules should not change. Our behaviours should.

Plenty of people captain the big ticket item players every week, even if there is speculation about how many minutes they will get and if they will even make it onto the pitch. Sterling last night was a classic. If we'd all known he was going to start and play 60+ we all probably would have captained him, but the uncertainty makes it a risk, and more exciting in the long run for those with (and without) that player.

If more cameos are going to be more likely in the future then we are going to have to consider being more creative with our captaincy choices. If Sterling is likely to get 30-45 mins then perhaps it's best to go for the likes of Antonio, Jimenez, Willian if they are pretty much nailed for 90. I'm hoping to see a little more bravery and a little less group think. Plenty of us (me included) fail to take potentially fruitful risks because we don't want to be left behind by the crowd.

It’s a good point and I want to be more brave in choices. The problem is you are so punished if a high ownership player hauls. The risk reward heavily favours safe choices as 1 bad week can cause a 30+ point swing

        1. Make Arrows Green Again

True but I wonder if there is some basic psychology involved too. I always feel worse about a bad gameweek than I ever feel good about a good gameweek. Plenty captained Sterling to a monster score in 35+. I think it's just a case of realising how those scores average out, and seeing whether a more 'average' player might, in some gameweeks, be a better pick.

Yeh I went Willian due to definitely starting, on pens, set pieces, attacking player v Norwich who had just conceded 4 to West Ham. What was not to like?

Seeing him blank, I was annoyed I didn't captain Sterling cos I was sure he would start but the doubt put me off and after how last night went it was exactly the reason I didn't captain him in the first place.

        1. Make Arrows Green Again
          • 7 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

Exactly the same with me! I went Willian because he was nailed for 60+, had good stats, was a bit of a differential, and was playing Norwich. It didn't pay off but the stats were there before and after the match. He made seven key passes after all. I would do the same again, in fact I think in 7/10 games he would have produced a return with those stats.

This's how the game is based on luck at times. There's definitely skill and planning needed but when a pick like that doesn't pay off and he's a massive differential it's bad luck. Annoying but that's how the game is at times.

What change should I make for 37?

Thinking of bringing in a heavy hitter: Sterling or Aubameyang. Most probably Sterling for Dilva or Foden. Open to taking hits did a -8 and 4 transfers brought in Dilva (C) and on 53 (-8) atm with 4 to play so if the hit feels right will do it.

I wouldn't risk another Pep masterclass captaincy so soon after the Semi. Martial or Bruno much safer bets.

Would captaincy on just one of Silva or Sterling final day be enough City cover vs Norwich with only two City players?

            TAA Boly Egan (Taylor* Kiko)

            Salah KDB Pulisic Bruno (Foden)

Hard to judge transfers with FA Cup starting after deadline. Think bench is going to be key this GW for injuries and rotation more so even than this week.

            Patricio (Martin)
            TAA Doherty Kiko (Taylor* Lascelles*)
Mane KdB Bruno (c) Pulisic (Foden)
            Rash Jimenez Greenwood

            1FT £0.4m

I've been a bit screwed by Taylor's injury, as I was hoping to save a FT for a mini-WC in GW38 to ditch Wolves players and make sure I've got right Man City players.

            a) Save FT and play Kiko against MCI
            b) Lascelles > Burnley defender (hope Taylor recovers and play double Burnley defence last day against Brighton)

Or keep money in the bank and keep moving for those big hitting players who have just been rested. There are ways to always have the best possible captain pick in the team, but you're right, in order to do that you need the rest of your team to be very stable. Not too many punts.

Sure, Pep will take out his 5 best players when they're winning easily (which is quite often) but those players are likely to have already hauled if they're winning easily

He's a classic case of being a bad differential.

Inferior stats, inferior positioning, no set pieces, less threat. This is not a differential, this is a downgrade.

A differential is a player like Antonio, or Trossard or McNeil. Low ownership but can haul given the right fixture.

Look at the minutes for Wood over the Christmas period. 5 starts from GW17-21, and only subbed off twice and both after 70 mins.I'd say he's nearly back to full match fitness now and is good to go against Norwich.

            Salah KdB Bruno Pulisic
            Rash Vardy Greenwood

            3.9 Fernandez Holgate Guendouzi

            1ft, 0.2itb

Any ideas? Keep ft and have two for final week? Maybe Vardy+Pulisic for Auba&some mid for -4?

            For a -4? Y or N

A week early perhaps but nice call

He's been on my radar ever since 30+ but just find other priorities. Contemplating him over Sterling in 38.

                Tarkowski | Saiss | Kiko
                Salah | Sterling | KdB | Bruno | Martial
                Kane | Greenwood*

                Button | Connolly | Elmohamady | Lascelles*

David Silva or Vardy is tempting.

              So is Antonio...

              Dilva TC here

Kane is an intriguing differential shout. I'm guessing Dilva will be fairly template come 38.

Tricky - he had a huge impact when he came on having a hand in both goals (literally for the second). It was a huge two points to drop but don't think Nuno will hold it against him massively. Can see him starting vs Palace.

I was going to make the boring transfer of Giroud to Ings this week, but given how much Bournemouth have improved over the last two GWs (and still fighting for their lives) coupled with Newcastle's (with nothing to play for) injury problems, what do think about a cheeky punt on Maupay (rested last game)?

If you've got no injuries I would. You're kinda running out of time now, so I'd just be happy to have 4 playing subs
