Another post-title off-day leaves FPL managers with doubts over Liverpool assets

Arsenal 2-1 Liverpool

  • Goals: Alexandre Lacazette (£9.2m), Reiss Nelson (£5.3m) | Sadio Mane (£12.2m)
  • Assists: Lacazette | Andy Robertson (£7.0m)
  • Bonus: Lacazette x3, Mane x2, Robertson x1

A classic smash-and-grab raid by Arsenal ensured Liverpool will not be breaking the Premier League points record this season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side needed to win their last three matches to eclipse Manchester City’s 100-point tally from two campaigns ago but came away with nothing from last night’s trip to the Emirates.

That they did was down to uncharacteristic sloppiness from key players and an Arsenal team that seems to be relishing the chance to showcase their more gritty side these days.

Liverpool dominated the match, scoring first when Roberto Firmino (£9.3m) released Andy Robertson (£7.0m) down the left flank and his smart cut-back was swept home by Sadio Mane (£12.2m).

The Reds then went on to have 24 attempts to the home side’s three.

The only problem was that Arsenal scored from two of those rare opportunities and, if truth be told, they should probably have netted from the other one too, Joe Willock (£4.7m) fluffing a big chance when set up by fellow substitute Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m) late on.

Mikel Arteta’s men were level after 32 minutes when Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) dallied in possession long enough for Reiss Nelson (£5.3m) – preferred up front to Aubameyang – to nick the ball off him.

It fell to Alexandre Lacazette (£9.2m), who rounded Alisson (£6.2m) and rolled the ball into the unguarded net.

Van Dijk’s claim that Nelson had fouled him was as half-hearted as his initial resistance to the challenge, almost like Liverpool had won the title five Gameweeks ago.

That is increasingly the issue for those Fantasy managers still clinging on to their high-value, but low-returning, defensive assets from the champions.

Since winning the league in Gameweek 31+, the 43.4%-owned van Dijk has produced just 12 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). His even more costly teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.7m and 40.7%) has scored a mere nine points.

At least the 17.7%-owned Robertson has delivered more points – 25 – on his own than the much-vaunted pair have managed together, thanks to attacking returns in each of his last three appearances.

Liverpool have clearly lost their defensive swagger in recent weeks, leaving huge swathes of managers with players offering all the buck with none of the bang. Even the previously reliable Alexander-Arnold has lost his way, the last of his 14 assists coming in Gameweek 27.

The right-back lost over 100,000 owners heading into the Arsenal match and he’s in the top five for Gameweek 37+ sales as more and more people realise £7.8m gets them a Burnley or Sheffield United defender and a hefty slice of change to spend elsewhere.

And it could have been worse for those who stuck by their man last night as he was lucky not to be shown a red card for a high challenge on Willock that went straight into the ‘I’ve seen them given’ category of co-commentator cliches.

At least he wasn’t at fault for either goal, with Lacazette turning provider for the winner when he intercepted Alisson’s casual pass out to the flank and moved the ball quickly onto Nelson, who scored with a precise finish.

The goal confirmed the theme of the night – highly-owned players failed, less popular ones excelled.

While the 21.6%-owned Aubameyang was given only a 32-minute run-out, Lacazette (2.0%) scored, assisted and was awarded maximum bonus to produce an 11-point haul – only his second double-digit return of the season.

More pertinently for most Fantasy managers, the duel between goalscorer Mane (20.5%) and Mohamed Salah (£12.5m and 34.5%) went to the former, although the Egyptian did have his moments.

The Arsenal meme factory might have churned out countless variations on the excellent Kieran Tierney (£5.3m) keeping Salah in his pocket, but the Liverpool man could have had a couple of goals anyway.

He produced a glorious drag-back that put David Luiz (£5.7m) on his backside, only for his stabbed shot to be tipped over the bar by Emiliano Martinez (£4.3m) – the pick of the eight saves the Arsenal keeper made on the night.

And Salah should have beaten Martinez when presented with a free header at the far post, only to nod the ball weakly into the Argentine’s arms.

Overall, Mane out-performed his attacking partner for attempts, chances created and, crucially, points on the night.

Since lockdown was eased, Salah has outscored Mane by 41 points to 35 – and from one appearance fewer. But with just two matches to go, the prospects of neither are looking that clever, particularly with a Chelsea side desperate to secure a Champions League place up next.

Klopp’s post-match comments, or at least the first few words, could have been an accurate summary of many Fantasy managers’ night:

I’m disappointed and angry about a few things but the game was good, the attitude was good, but we took a break and that is why we lost the game. Today we made some human errors, which is not so nice but not completely surprising that it can happen whenever. Tonight it happened.

And while ‘it’ might not happen again this season, many Free Hitters who went without Liverpool assets for the Gameweek dodged a bullet. They might even be tempted to sell on their expensive Reds stars – most notably their defenders – on a more permanent basis now.

Defence has not been a thing at Arsenal for a while now, but under Arteta there’s no doubt that a backbone is returning.

The Spaniard said after full-time:

It’s our way. You can see how they go into every duel, into every action, how intense they are, everybody’s willing to do that and if you press the pass you’ll force mistakes from the opponent. I am extremely happy. Mostly for the players because it was a big blow when we lost against Spurs, the way we played. But today they came back again.

They rode their luck against Liverpool, but they also did the dirty work – the top four players for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI) were Arsenal players, including a star defensive turn from the previously-maligned Granit Xhaka (£5.1m).

Rob Holding (£4.4m), handed a third start since football returned, also impressed and, should he keep his place for the final two fixtures, offers a cut-price way into a defence that might well add to its post-lockdown tally of three clean sheets in the remaining two fixtures, against Aston Villa and Watford.

The bargain basement delights of Martinez, unlucky not to earn any bonus after a busy night, shouldn’t be overlooked either, although using transfers on keepers at this late stage of the season is likely to be the preserve of only those with their Free Hit chip still to play.

Arsenal XI (3-4-3): Martínez; Tierney, Holding, D Luiz; Cédric (Maitland-Niles 76), Xhaka, Torreira (Ceballos 57), Saka (Kolasinac 85); Nelson (Aubameyang 58), Lacazette (Willock 57), Pépé.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Robertson, van Dijk, Gomez, Alexander-Arnold; Fabinho, Wijnaldum (Shaqiri 83), Oxlade-Chamberlain (Keita 61); Mané, Firmino (Minamino 61), Salah (Origi 83).

TAA might be a problem, have same problem with him he is not worth now keeping but also i don't want to take hit to change him

CTaylor is porbably out for this GW - he have nice fixture in GW 38 but i don't know if he will play.

      Greenwood also a doubt.

So wait and maybe remove Vardy? You want to keep Pulisic for last GW?

    TAA AWB Saiss

Is this team good enough for this GW? Any suggestions?

    Salah is in my mind

    Patricio (Martin)
    TAA Doherty Kiko (Taylor* Lascelles*)
Mane KdB Bruno (c) Pulisic (Foden)
    Rash Jimenez Greenwood*

    1FT £0.4m

I've been a bit screwed by Taylor's injury, as I was hoping to save a FT for a mini-WC in GW38 to ditch Wolves players and make sure I've got right Man City players. Greenwood doubt is also a worry.

    a) Save FT and play Kiko against MCI
    b) Lascelles > Burnley defender (hope Taylor recovers and play double Burnley defence last day against Brighton)
    c) Something else

Arsenal honestly only need 3 or 4 signings to challenge for CL imo. Example:

    Leno
    Cedric, Saliba, Upamecano, Tierney
    Torreira, I. Diallo, Saka
    Auba, Lacazette, Martinelli

Spares: Martinez, Macey, [Malang Sarr], Mari, Holding, Luiz, Chambers, [Xhaka], Bellerin, Maitland-Niles, Willock, [Smith Rowe], Ceballos/Coutinho, Pepe, Nelson, Nketiah

Leaving: Sokratis, Mustafi, Omole*, M. Dennis*, Bola, Kolasinac, Sheaf, Elneny, Guendouzi, [Xhaka], [Balogun]

Loaned: Mavropanos, Medley, Ozil, Osei-Tutu, Mkhitaryan*, [Smith Rowe], [Balogun], John-Jules

Extensions from 2021 needed: Auba, [Balogun]

New signings: Macey*, Luiz*, Mari*, Upamecano, [M. Sarr], I. Diallo, Ceballos (permanent or loan)/Coutinho (loan)

    [] = optional
    * = done

Quite excited, especially if Arsenal have a similarly good, promising transfer window as last Summer.

From the sounds of Arteta's interview, I doubt the board will back him

        Which interview?

Honestly, I think Arteta can do a job with whatever he's given, so long as there are some players leaving and joining. I'm sure the executives will take Arteta's relationships and plans into account., even if he doesn't have a final say. There should be some progress, I think.

With Sky Sports - On Youtube, talking about the gap is enormous between Arsenal and Liverpool alluding to financial might and ability to compete at the top

how do you gather from that intrerview that the board wont back him? If anything, a public plea for backing is could result in the opposite

You can look at it both ways

I think it is great for Arsenal with Arteta at the helm, he knows what it takes to challenge at the top and is pushing the board to back him.

          2. Deulofail
            • 8 Years

Sure, well he's not wrong, but he's taking the opportunity to exaggerate to manage expectations, take the pressure off etc. He does the same for lot's of things, e.g. downplaying Saliba's importance, and reliance on Saka etc.

I don't see any message in that interview that he doesn't expect the board to back him tbh. More that he doesn't know if they can afford to compete. They aren't exactly the same thing. It also depends on if players are available at the right times at the right prices. But again, I think he's managing expectations.

Fair enough, but if one leaves, then it should guarantee an extra player incoming. I don't really have an issue with that. Lacazette hasn't impressed many people with his form or attitude this season. I only included him here because he had a good couple of games and Arsenal aren't blessed with experienced CFs.

        1. PapaWengzz

Jovic could be a good replacement. Though i think Martinelli and Nketiah would be worthy backups for whoever stays, and i would focus the funds on getting big ticket CB and CM. Also would love to see Grealish join us

True. I think it's a bit of a stretch to think Arsenal will compete for CL next season. Needs all the players brought in to actually perform. Would be very surprised to see it happen, but it's always a possibility

    3. PapaWengzz
      • 4 Years

I would take Partey as i dont think French U20 Diallo who hasnt really played much top flight footballl can be 1st choice dm for a CL club...but overall I agree, Artetas got them in the right direction.

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years
        3 years, 9 months ago

I would certainly take Partey, but I'm not convinced he'd even want to come. He's suggested that he will be staying put, and Arsenal may not even have European football next season. He'll also be one of the most expensive options, while simultaneously having little promise of a profit given his age. I'm surprised the links are persisting tbh, but a potential swap for Lacazette is also helping to fuel the transfer talk.

        1. PapaWengzz
          • 4 Years

unfortunately the profit potential is a factor yes. It really shouldnt be and we should be prepared to spend on a player who would help us immediately, without thinking about his sell-on price

would be a big mistake to let Xhaka go, their best midfielder imo, seriously under rated

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years
        3 years, 9 months ago

Under rated? That is crazy talk. He's improved recently, but he has big, big mistakes in him that will come out again in the future, while also being very wasteful in attack. His quality is just not high enough. The conundrum for Arsenal, really, would be replacing his personality. That would be the one reason I'd be okay with him staying tbh. Credit where it's duethough, he genuinely has been a 6-7/10 player recently. That'll help increase his value 😀

But yeah, I doubt he'll be sold, which is why I expect to be disappointed, especially if he continues to play and the mistakes creep back in again.

I agree, but I think he has the ego of someone who wants to, and feels he deserves to, be starting week-in, week-out. So he positive contribution in the dressing room could diminish or become toxic if takes on a support role. Who knows, though

Nah I don't think that team is great. I don't think it can beat a well-drilled and bolstered Mourinho Spurs team let alone Liverpool, City or United. Even Chelsea are looking pretty scary next season if they can sort out their defense. I think Arsenal are comfortably the worst team out of the top 6.

Only Aubameyang is really worthy of getting into any of the other top sides.

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years
        3 years, 9 months ago

Well Arsenal already had a comprehensive victory over United this season. Only the addition of one player has helped make the rest of the team look class again. Arsenal also have quality waiting to be unleashed. Saka and Martinelli seem to already be good enough to compete for places in most top 6 sides, and if given the opportunity to start consistently at Arsenal, could just get better and better. Lacazette on his day is better than both Chelsea strikers this season. Pepe isn't there yet, but could be as good as Son next season, who knows.

I really think it's a matter of bolstering CM and CB with quality, and then it's just a wait and see what happens for the top 6 teams, because I can't write Arsenal off with these players, given the introduction of a new system and motivation.

Maybe it'll all go to sh*t, but I do believe you are slightyl underestimating that team (and squad) - considering that there will also be 5 subs per game next season.

How many points would you have scored if you left your team as is? If you got more than 10 points out of it, it was worth it.

    What’s your opinion on greenwood?

Takes a rest tonight then starts the next 3 including cup ? Or takes a rest in the cup as well ?

I’m a bit worried he’ll start in the cup and then be benched for West Ham

Cup is Ighalo territory so he may get the rest in the cup.

Really can't see him playing tonight, then getting some action in the cup but not entirely. Then completely fresh for Champs league final push in the league

      5?

He was 50/50 starter imo, one of him or Jesus had to start. Himself or Mahrez hadn't been benched together recently, it was unlucky.

Thoughts on these transfers for next two GW. Plan to bring in Dilva in GW38 for Pulisic.

    A) Greenwood & TAA to Auba & Tarkowski (-4)
    B) Greenwood to Rashford
    C) Connolly to Wood

Auba has burned me in past but as two appetising fixtures & Tark too. If Greenwood looks fit then may just do Wood or save free transfer to use two in GW38

Have free hit in gameweek 38. Would you rather do TAA and Vardy to Tarkowski and Aubameyang for a -4 or Maguire and pulisic to Tarkowski and Martial? Hope this isn’t too confusing!

Best 1 gw move(s) with 1FT and 1.5m itb. Big decision whether to bench any of my 3 city mids and whether to get a 3rd utd attacker

    DDG
Taa • Doherty • Holgate ----------- Lamptey Kiko
    Mahrez • KDB • Bruno (c) • Foden --- Pulisic
    Jimmy • Rashford • Ings

    Potential solutions
A: Holgate >> Digne. The front 7 seems good and pulisic a good bench if one of them totally miss out
B: DDG + Pulisic >> Pope + Marital (c) (-4) and bench foden. Punty but no martial has my rank plunge so cover myself
    C: Foden + Pulisic >> Son (c) + benchfodder (-4)...bit punty

Thoughts here? Likely chasing 10-15 points, Jesus would be main differential...

    Henderson
    TAA Stephens Doherty
    Salah KDB Bruno (C) Foden
    Vardy Rashford Ings

    McCarthy; Soucek, Aurier, Lascelles

    1FT..0.5itb

    A) Vardy > Jesus
    B) Salah > Sterling
    C) Save FT and use 2FTs to set-up hopefully successful GW38 BB (Need to sort Lascelles, Aurier probably will play last game?)

10-15 points is a tiny lead and with a strong BB in 38 with a couple of players out of 4 getting returns you should manage. Hold strong.

My exact moves on fanteam game this week (not FPL but near identical with 250,000 prize pool), currently 28th overall there, i think it's a great move especially if setting up for GW38 and no FH? Auba & Dilva i think should be the 2 'most wanted' for the season closer?

Just hit top of ML but its tight (i started week 4 after a hiatus for a few years!). 10 pts clear and we both have 5 to go.
    My team
    Pope. Martinez
TAA, Doh, Ritche, Garcia, Aurier(out now)?
    Bruno, Marital, KDB, Foden, Son
    Vardy, DCL, Greenwood (Inj)
    1 FT 4M ITB

    Their team
    Schmichael, Button
TAA, VVD, Tark, Baldock, Soy* (Sus)
Bruno (VC), Martial, Mahrez, Salah (C) Cantwell
    Jimi, Ings, Maupay

They havent made any changes in the last 2 weeks, and only minimal activity since the restart. Was struggling to get past them and they have all the players I would want to get in Ings, Salah, Jimi etc. Open to a suggestions (i hide behind the sofa everytime Salah and Mahrez play). I was thinking maybe:

    a) Son to Salah to cover
    b) Getting wood in for DCL or Greenwood
    c) Getting SIlva in for the norwich game.
    d) something else!

    Thanks
