United set to face fragile Leicester defence ripped apart by Kane and Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 Leicester City

  • Goals: James Justin (£4.7m) own-goal, Harry Kane (£10.9m) x2
  • Assists: Son Heung-min (£9.7m), Lucas Moura (£7.0m) x2
  • Bonus: Kane x3, Lucas, Hugo Lloris (£5.3m) x2

Leicester City and Manchester United will square off at the King Power Stadium in Gameweek 38+ and, depending on how the Red Devils and Chelsea get on in their respective midweek fixtures, it could be a case of winner takes all for a UEFA Champions League qualification spot next Sunday.

Those of us on a Free Hit or with a transfer to burn might be considering whether to ditch a United asset or two given the magnitude of the fixture but based on what we saw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side could have plenty of joy against the Foxes.

Jose Mourinho showed his former employers how to do it: cede possession and hit a patched-up, plodding defence on the counter-attack.

Spurs saw only 29% of the ball in this match and had no penalty box touches in the second half, with Brendan Rodgers’ side registering more than three times as many shots over the course of the game.

But the damage was done by half-time, with all three of the Lilywhites’ goals scored on the break.

An in-the-mood Harry Kane (£10.9m) set Son Heung-min (£9.7m) free down the left flank for the hosts’ opener, with the Korean’s shot taking a telling touch off James Justin (£4.7m) and wrong-footing Kasper Schmeichel (£5.5m) after just five minutes.

Kane hit a quick-fire double as the game neared half-time, first rolling a finish past Schmeichel following a through-ball from Lucas Moura (£7.0m) and then curling a superb effort in off the upright after another pass from the Brazilian.

There could have been other goals and again, all of them came from quick passes from back to front, catching Leicester’s high line out all too easily.

Son forced Schmeichel into a save following a direct, 50-yard ball from Harry Winks (£5.2m), with the South Korea international later getting his feet in a muddle when played clean through on goal by Kane just after half-time.

Given Bruno Fernandes (£9.1m) and Paul Pogba‘s (£8.3m) ability to spot a pass from deep and United’s capacity to break at speed, Sunday’s match in north London would have provided Solskjaer – and Fantasy managers – with food for thought.

Mourinho talked through his tactical masterclass after the game, saying:

I think it was an intelligent performance. I knew that for them to play with this back five is not a very comfortable situation.

I want to be honest with Brendan. I don’t remember that someone was so honest with me when I was playing without a striker, but I want to be honest with Brendan and it’s easy to realise that to play without Ricardo Pereira, Soyuncu and Chilwell destroys a backline.

So we decided to take away from them where they can hurt us, which is basically behind us. We took away from them our defensive depth, we control the game by positioning our defensive block a little bit lower than we normally do.

Then we gave the ball to them, to their back three, because we wanted them to bring the ball and we wanted them to feel quite comfortable, leaving their comfort zone, which is where they are not playing many matches.

Bennett and Morgan, we wanted to take them away from their comfort zone to try to explore the counter-attack and fast transitions. So when we scored three goals in the first half, I think the game is over.

As Mourinho mentioned above, Leicester were without three of their regular back four, namely Ricardo Pereira (£6.2m), Ben Chilwell (£5.5m) and Caglar Soyuncu (£4.9m).

None of that trio will be available for the Manchester United game, although there is a chance that Marc Albrighton (£5.1m) could return to take over one of the wing-back slots.

In their absence, a back three with a combined age of 98 years struggled with the pace and movement of Son and Kane, while teenage left-back Luke Thomas (£4.0m) – who impressed going forward – had a real baptism of fire from a defensive perspective on his first away start.

That ragtag bunch of defenders had performed well against Sheffield United in midweek but Chris Wilder’s side aren’t renowned for their pace on the break and played into the hands of the Foxes, something Mourinho evidently didn’t do on Sunday.

Marcus Rashford (£8.9m) and Anthony Martial (£8.5m), in particular, will be licking their lips at the prospect of facing Wes Morgan (£4.1m) and co next weekend.

Rodgers said after full-time in north London:

It was a strange game because we were really good in parts. The parts we weren’t so good in was things that we’ve spoken about: dealing with the counter-attack.

The first one we’re disappointed with because we’ve got to have a better pressure higher up the pitch. Instead, Harry [Kane] turns and makes the pass in behind and they get a bit of luck.

The other two: obviously a breakaway from a corner and a great finish. That individual quality hurt us today, but it was strange. It didn’t feel that we should’ve been 3-0 down.

There was a bit of encouragement at the other end, at least, despite the blank in front of goal.

Jamie Vardy (£9.7m) had a number of early sighters before seeing an inventive backheeled effort strike the feet of Hugo Lloris (£5.3m), while the lively Ayoze Perez (£6.0m) drew two flying saves out of the Frenchman and substitutes Demarai Gray (£5.0m) and Kelechi Iheanacho (£5.7m) both saw efforts from range repelled.

Lloris emerged with two bonus points to his name but the Spurs clean sheet was as much to do with the players in front of him, with the Foxes not registering a single ‘big chance’ despite all of their possession.

Serge Aurier (£5.1m) and co have now banked four shut-outs in the last seven Gameweeks, more than they managed in Mourinho’s first 18 matches in charge.

With an out-of-form Crystal Palace to come in Gameweek 38+, there could be joy to be had for Spurs assets at either end of the field.

Certainly Kane, for all our initial reservations about the premium forward ahead of the restart, appears to be hitting levels we haven’t seen in a long time, combining the deeper role we came to be suspicious of with the hitman status of yesteryear.

He may not be the classic ‘number nine’ of yore, but maybe a ‘nine-and-a-half’ is enough at present.

First attempt at 38 FH? Any improvements?

    Martinez
    Pietersen, Bardsley, Digne
    Dilva, Salah, Martial, Mahrez
    Auba, Jesus, Kane

Maybe Aurier instead of Digne and an Arsenal defender for Bards? Everton currently v poor and I see BOU scoring. Also Bur Vs Bri unlikely to be a goalless affair. If you are thinking of getting two from any team, ARS is better.

With no FH and a chasing position I really don't want to mess up my transfers for the final GW. I definitely don't want Vardy in my team, but I'm unsure what to do with him. My options:

    1. Doherty to Tierney/Tark, to fund Vardy to Auba/Kane (means benching Pulisic)
    2. Keep Doherty (Lascelles and Femenia on my bench so not much I can do there), Vardy to Connolly, Pulisic to Salah

    Morning,

Its been an interesting 48nhours I would say with kane and auba taking the limelight.

I find it interesting that alot of fh or wc for 38 now full blown attack with jesus kane and auba.

It was only last week that all teams where fully loaded in the midfield with only 1 striker.

Curious to know you all think will score more points next week? A loaded midfield or a stacked up attack?

I think the really juicy game is city vs norwich who will have a couple missing due to suspension. Suppose we need to see what Watford position is before making any judgement.

Also find it interesting that rashford isn't mentioned much even though Leicester will most likely need to win vs utd

Rashford capable of a haul against a depleted LEI defence. Game will be very open as in all likelihood LEI will have to go for a win with the sam goal difference Utd beats WHam. I'd keep an eye on the Utd game this week.. will determine the flow of the last game with LEI

For me Auba and Jesus are locked. So 343 vs 352 is Ings vs someone like Antonio for example. On paper Ings' fixture is worse. But he seems to be in great form and I wonder if that pen miss will provide more drive.

Why would you lose Jesus? He's getting enough good chances per game that it doesn't matter if he's had. He still gets returns. Against a Norwich team historically conceding to strikers? I'd keep.

Some interesting numbers to think on foe next season
With the season almost complete I found the following:
My defenders (538 pts) contributed more than my forwards (534 pts). I only played more than 3 at the back 10 times and I played 8 captains in my forward line over the period.
My goalkeeper has managed 186 points so far, which is a higher points per player than Defenders and Mids.

What above tells me is outside the lucky stuff (Captains BB TC's) more ground can be made up by getting the right keeper and defenders.
I shudder to think how much it cost Andy in ranking due to stubbornness in not changing to Pope earlier.
Get your defenders right before looking at "differentials" IMHO

With 186 gk points I’d be close to top 10k

From 1-29 I got (improved a bit since)

      6 cs
      6 1 pointers
      6 3 pointers
      11 2 pointers

Interesting numbers. If one sees a trend such as Pope or Henderson, don't let anyone tell you it is a wasted Tfr to change. I am 40k atm and my rank would be in the top 10k if I got the captaincy right.

That is interesting. I think generally a lot of people tend to look at defenders in the wrong way, almost as if any points from that area would be a bonus but not worth a transfer, a hit, a restructure etc. But defenders with attacking potential are capable of big hauls, in fact in some cases it might be more likely for the right kind of defender to score double digits than a striker. There's plenty of upside to chase in defence in my opinion.

I've had Ritchie since GW30+ and he's scored my 38 points from 6 starts. Totally unfashionable pick but he's the true definition of OOP, gets forward, takes shots, puts crosses in, on set pieces, throw in the odd clean sheet and he feels like a player that could do contribute returns in any fixture. Throw in the likes of TAA, Robertson, Doherty, Alonso when likely to play etc and there are plenty of opportunities available all season. Yet we almost look at defensive transfers as boring or not worth the effort.

And then goalkeepers is a whole different story again. I've been extremely guilty in this department, stubbornly refusing to bring in Pope because I think the run is due to end. And it rolls on and on and on costing me points to my ML rivals almost every GW. Lessons to be learned.

Exactly. Sure there have been standard defenders to get (egTAA) There is every year. There are a multitude of reasons why this happens but the fact that it does happen is reason enough to think carefully about the back line.

The 10 times you played more than the 3 the back is probably minimum 20 points (probably more!) and with TAA on board (who has outscored every forward in the game except Vardy) its probably intuitive enough that defs scored so well - Andy sold TAA before Leicester so would have taken a big hit for that!

Lundstram is the other factor - in the first half of the season he was destroying mids & forwards with his scoring

Bad year for strikers though for sure - but if any of Salah, Mane, Martial, Sterling, Son, Richarlison etc get moved up to join Rashford, Ings, Jimmy, Vardy, Kane, Auba then things could look very different again next season

      Should be interesting!

It's so difficult to actively look away from mids and forwards to employ any formation that doesn't include 7 attackers (because scoring goals is fun and protecting clean sheets is horrible to watch), but from a purely numbers-based perspective I'm pretty sure an optimal 4-5-1 / 5-4-1 could destroy the old 3-4-3. Of course like anything else you'd have to get the right defenders at the right time, but the value compared to the forward line is almost undeniable. And if you commit to putting the captaincy on premium mids for the upside they have over forwards, there would almost be no reason to spend any more than absolutely necessary upfront. Yet despite this view, when the new season rolls around it's almost impossible not to load up in attack.

Value for money leads to 4/5/1 4/4/2 etc. The captaincy bucks are with mids for sure. As you say, it becomes a psychological thing.

TAA and Lund stand out for sure. We have no idea of price points at the moment so it is hard to call. I am talking about embedded attitudes when playing FPL. It is easy to do.
I have last season's numbers and they are even more extreme. Doherty WanB and Pool defenders made the difference and I definitely made lots out of 4 and sometimes 5 at the back.

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years

Its part of the thinking that led to a mass of 5 at the backs at the start of this season - quickly fell by the wayside though as Everton's defence went from keeping 8 cleansheets in their last 10 to losing Gueye etc

Around Christmas i swapped to 3 liverpool defenders for their mad run of CS's & helped with a lot of green arrows as Mane & Salah delivered points, but ate up 25.0m of budget - but those were the expensive defenders rather than cheap

GK's & cheap defenders always look good on pure value - a big part of that is that ~80 appearance points for ~4.5m is something that a forward at 7.5m+ is just never going to be able to compete with

For me - it' TAA & 4x rotating 4.'s next season - either Pope at 5.0-5.5, Leeds at 4.5 (Casilla or that new guy whichever Bielsa goes with) or Brentford's GK if they get promoted - both Leeds & Brentford have conceded less this season that Sheffield united did last year

Martial & Rashford are also turbo nailed in, regardless of price & position - probably KDB as well - Bruno if budgets will stretch

One of Ings or Jimmy depending on prices and postional reclasses above for martial/rashford

Then will see how the land lies after that - not super fussed on Mane or Salah at 12.5m - unless they get a price cut i think i'll swerve

Hit top 10k for the first time last week - dropped outside again this week so far though - but basically if Rashford (c) can haul this week & Dilva (TC) can haul next week should be good for a top10k

Worried after seeing Rashford get so many minutes yesterday though - but if they don't then them's the breaks I guess 🙂

Overall have left A LOT of points on the table this season though (as have we all i'm sure)

GW8 playing Otamendi over Lundstram still haunts me as Pep brought him on in the 90th minute for a 1 pointer to block lundstram's 21 points from the bench... captaining Son for his red card in GW18... Captaining Vardy for his missed pen in GW23... last minute captaincy switch from KDB to Kun in GW30+, Klopp benching Mane away to Brighton messing up Salah > Sterling that week, etc etc - 52 points of hits as well - but it's been fun on the whole

I always think the first week with new prices is the most interesting.
After a few years I came to a conclusion.
            1) Don't buy brand new assets.
            2) Put in your fodder first so you can clearly work what players you can take on.
            3) Avoid captaincy punts and differentials. They are what they are for a reason.
            4) Let history work for you, not price.

There are quite a few others but fundamentals I tend to use.
My greatest weakness is taking too many hits and using chips too early.

              Same with Haller

There were one or two others, and seem to be every season

We'll get the same with Werner (who's record in Germany looks very good) Ziyech (who's looked good in champions league) and no doubt some others

There are always exceptions and if we have lots of info such as Cost, Auba, Bruno etc then, fair enough, bring them in. The point is, it would be wise to find out about there chances of starting, fitness etc. Before the first week of the year, prices are not moving, so no harm in waiting a week. Bruno is an example of hitting the ground running; therev are a lot more that fail in this regard.

I did it manually. It takes up a little time but the spreadsheet tells a lot.
The simple version I have is a weekly record of:
        1) How many players played in each position (A captain would count as 2 players) Hence 12 each week and BB TZ and DGW' I add too.
        2) I record total value spent in each position. (Doubling up on captain)
        3) I record the points for each position and from that point I can formulate various situation from these figures.
        4) I continuously keep a running total of 5 weeks to see the change in trends.

The value of forwards has always been questioned but in seasons like this one when the premium forwards almost all fail to beat 200pts then value is the way to go.
The thing with forwards is intuitively I think they are more fixture dependant so they can't hit massive ppg over a kind run of fixtures and become serious cap options for those runs. Even if you don't cap them at least if you have them it doesn't damage your rank massively.

Also there are loads of premium defenders that didn't score well for no apparent reason, Chelsea, Spurs, utd, Leicester went on a miserable run between gw16 and gw28. It can be much harder to predict when defenders will score their points. Hence the investment in attacking defenders and hoping for cs

We sing from the same hymn sheet. There are many factors that create situations. I feel Wing Backs have been the big difference . Baines and Coleman "sort of" started it and 5/ at the back became fashionable when Conte arrived. With Covid in the mix, tired legs play a part. Alonso great and shocking at the same time if you know what I mean.

I'd say Red Lightning will arrive at some stage with the stats showing which perma formations & ghost teams would have done well over the season vs. the averages & 3-4-3 etc

      Agree, defence is very important.
It’s not coincidence that whenever I do well it’s when I have a decent defence.

      Pope is a no brainier.

Think I’ll be going four at the back next season. Might not start with it but will shift to it once we know who

The other thing were mentioning is how people wrongly classify attacking defenders as just defenders.
The likes of TAA, Robbo, Alonso, Doherty should been seen as midfielders. Then compare them and their points to real midfielders in the same price brackets. The only midfielders that would be is sub 7.5 and mainly 6.5s. So your talking the likes of Traore, Mount and players like that which are no where near the returns of these defenders.

Thats not strictly true though as you have to have 3 midfielders at least. You are firstly comparing defenders to other defenders so how much extra points will you get from your defender spot over the viable cheaper 4.5m/5m alternative and then you fill out the rest of your team. Once you have all the slots filled you can question whether its worth putting in another exp defender and playing one less cheaper midfielder. There are lots of exp defenders who haven't scored as well as mid priced midfielders too and if you are sitting on a big priced def from a team who aren't getting cs it can be very draining on your rank.

Team structure depends a lot on pricing and player classification. If there are several OOP defenders it’s a no brainer to play 4 at the back. It may be a sound strategy for the start of the season when TV is low and hard to find value. However if we have so many mids playing OOP I’d rather have 3-5-2 structure than 4-4-2 or 3-4-3 further through the season

Spot on,I always used to go with a cheap backline and rotating keepers but it hardly ever worked. This season, I went in with a single playing keeper, Henderson for most of the season, and now Pope for the last 10 GWs and this strategy alone has given me 189 points.. I invested a fair bit in my defence as well this season, with double pool def along with SHU/Leic for most of the season and managed 546 points so far, which is 100 more than what my front line has got...

Don’t even get me started on rotating keepers. The logic does not work.
I play the home one and he concedes while the away one hauls. I play the one with the better fixture and the one vs City gets a pen save.
Beyond ridiculous, I think I rotated for like 8 weeks and got every single call wrong 🙁

I actually go by the eye test most of the time. I was just passing on an observation that is not tied to value at all.
Sure, you can go in that direction, but I was pointing out how making the wrong choices there can be pretty dire.
Defenders Vs attackers are almost the same points over 36 weeks where I had 10 more defenders and 7 more attacking captaincies: effectively it could be wise to invest in defense more than one would expect.

For the last few years the FPL “value” order (points/GBP) has been (higher to lower):
          - GKs
          - defenders
          - mids
          - forwards

The defining moment for many I think was Man City putting 5 past Pope early doors, prior to many playing Wildcards. Might of thought that without crowd Burnley would struggle - they really only used to do well at home and be very average away.

I looked at Watford resurgence under Pearson, good fixtures and a decent showing v Leicester first up as my 'evidence' to get Foster. In fact bar the Southampton game (who knew they would become so good away?) it has just been the odd goal conceded in the favorable games of Burnley/Newcastle/Norwich. But still a mistake when virtually every other usual suspect sub 5.0 keeper has done better.

Not so much that bud. Pope had been doing well anyway. Most looked for an alternative when politics reared its ugly head. Andy could have seen this earlier and "waste" a tfr on a keeper.

I definitely got my GK wrong this season. Had Matt Ryan and Gazzaniga for the majority of the season. Both looked ok on paper but both flopped. Ryan a bit unlucky perhaps as he went through a run of conceeding 1 goal per game.

There is always a train of thought out there that investing in a strong defense early in the season and sticking with them is a good way to go. There is probably a highly ranked dead team who will have a backline of something like Pope, TAA, VVD, Doherty, Tarkowski.

The difficulty of course is picking the right defenders and GK. It is difficult to pick who will be the highest scorers over the course of a season. Ok, most would have predicted TAA to be up there, but he might be 8mil next season. Going heavy with defense requires an awful lot of patience and the fact that an expensive defense impacts budget elsewhere has to be factored in.

      VVD for instance this season:
      GW1-13: 2CS, 1GS total points 42.
      GW 14-26: 10CS, 3GS, total points 91.

This game is all about timing. I held him with TAA until maybe GW11-12. In hindsight I shouldn't have sold, but it was probably the right decision at the time based on the info available. Pool defensive double up wasn't working and was draining funds from the rest of my team. It comes back to the 'due' argument - how long to keep an under-performing asset? At what stage does it become stubbornness to refuse to sell?

The real winners were those who brought VVD in for GW14 onwards. Even though that may not have been a move that looked good on paper at the time. As with any pick, a lot comes down to luck.

Well done on getting so many points from your defenders and GK this season. But does that mean that defenders overall are undervalued or that you were skilled/lucky to have the right defenders at the right time? I'm sure there are plenty of other managers who had forwards score more than their defenders, for instance.

Overall I think there is good value in defenders when looked at the season as a whole. The relatively higher price for forwards is due to their ability to be more explosive and therefore more captainable. Goalscoring defenders such as VVD, Doherty, etc might score 3-5 goals a season but these are impossible to predict and these goals could come vs anyone.

      Sorry for the essay!

I get what you are saying and, of course, it is timing and luck. Of course one looks at budget but on many occasions we find a gem. (Greenwood ManU recently)
There are 2 points I am making really. Firstly, wing backs have made an impact and defense has become profitable to invest in.Secondly, whether a player is more explosive or not makes little difference. Over 2 weeks a 12 and a 2 is the same as 7 vs 7. If you get what I mean.
In conclusion, many of us are guilty of going by price etc. I for instance played TAA over Sais, even though I knew Sais was the wise pick, hoping TAA went mad on assists.
At the start of the season pick 2 nice rotation captain picks (home/away or fixture difficulty.) Look back at last years numbers and get those who are high on points per minute and choose easy fixture difficulty. There are many other ways of going about it but I think that is fundamentally sound.

I agree about wing backs for sure. Great potential value in wing backs. Generally, oop players are great. The right/left forwards are probably the best options in the game as they are classed as midfielders. The likes of Salah, Sterling, Mahrez, etc. FPL towers have a few tricky decisions to make in relation to positioning and pricing next season.

Regarding your 7+7pts vs 12x2pts example. This is true but how explosive a player is does come into play with captaincy.

Price can be misleading also. Definitely there is a voice in your head saying 'I can't bench him as he costs 6.5mil' but sometimes it is warranted. This week I benched TAA for Long so I'm hoping that doesn't come back to bite!

I'm looking forward to next season when I think I'll try to keep value more in mind.

As some posters recall, we had a furious debate about this pre-season, and we'll doubtless have it all over again next pre-season. The stats sure did show better value in defence, and I stuck by them with 5 at the back in the first few GWs. However, after smashing it with triple Everton in the first couple, I quickly fell away and abandoned my principles for a cliched 3-4-3. I guess if I'd cottoned on early to the value of Sheff Utd defenders early on, I might have maintained 5 at the back. Next time eh?

Interesting comment re pool defenders, I was on the verge of selling VVD before fabinho injury then I looked at pools cs while fabinho was out last season and decided I'd hold on and see how they go without him again. Sure enough a string of cs followed then fabinho got back in the team and the cs dried up again. Not sure if its just coincidence but its happened in two seasons now. So basically if fabinho is fit I won't be doubling on pool defence next season.

Interesting because this is a year I feel that defenders did NOT score how we hoped them too.

At the GK position, many backed Pope and at 4.5 he's been incredible value. And yes I agree with the comments above that rotating GK's doesn't work well.

But I've been a huge fan of big at the back (defenders) for the last 3 years after looking at the data and I have to see this year has been an aberration where it did not work. This year, mid priced and (upper middle priced - not a work, I know) performed better than premium defenders.

      Ings, Jimenez, Vardy, Rashford, Tammy

I wasn't expecting Pool defenders to hit the 200's like last year, but this really wasn't a great year for defenders. Outside of TAA, Robbo, VVD, you have Doherty who only turned it on beginning GW 27 and Tarkowski (wow!) who is 5th highest scoring defender at 142. Obviously Blades defenders were tremendous value but that's said in complete hindsight as I never would have loaded up on them at the start of the season.

Look at the popular picks in the beginning of the season:
      Digne= 113
      AWB= 119
      Lei fullbacks had injuries tbf
      Mendy= injuries
      Azpi/Alonso= 125/89
      Laporte= injury

And let's not forget Pool's inability to keep a CS in the beginning of the season.

I'm a huge fan of big at the back with premium defenders (probably to a fault) but this was not the year for it. I'm surprised no one else shared the same thoughts.

      Cheers for the discussion.

I will try and anwer best I can'
Liverpool took an age to get a clean sheet. Many doubled up and got hurt. That sticks in one' mind. Citeh with no Laporte and Doherty/Digne going up in price made a difference. Wan B went united with a 1.5mil increase was never a wing back. No need to go Alonso not getting a game and so and so on.
Throughout the season it looks better though and the mid /low priced mids could never keep up with expensive backs, albeit similar pricing.
Ings and Pukki tell their own story but Kun Auba Vardy Firmino Kane with Sterling Mane Son KDB and Sterling, you could only really have 2 or 3.
Don't get me wrong, the numbers surprised me too.
In Conclusion; no it was not as good as last year but gems did come forth like SUTD.
Top points scorerds are split 4 10 and 9 respectively across the positions. But look at the prices.

I'm surprised your defenders scored better than your forwards this year. Which forwards/defenders did you own for the majority of the season?

Excellent comments, that was more or less what I was thinking with the perils of going for big defenders and having the suck on your rank for ages if they are not getting the returns you predict them to get. This season has been brutal from a big teams defenders point of view even with all the help from var chalking off goals for spurious handballs and offsides. I guess thats the randomness of the thing though, next season we could have several big defenders on 150+ points. We will likely have Jose defenders 5.5m or less next season after spurs poor performance this season, same for arsenal, united, chelsea and city (to an extent) so could be great value without having to go big big at the back. Interesting next season ahead me thinks.

Don't know how it will turn out this season, but for the previous two seasons the optimal dead team squad was in 4-4-2 formation:

Optimal Dead Team Squad 2018-19 (4-4-2):

      (Lossl (HUD,4.5), Jimenez(WOL,5.5), Deulofeu(WAT,5.5), Digne(EVE,5.0))

Optimal Dead Team Squad 2017-18 (4-4-2)

Similarly, I had triple Burnley and felt the same way. Wanting defenders to do well is like praying for no goalmouth action while with attackers it means goals goals goals. It goes against entertainment.
Because FPL doesn't reward good tackles, clearances and interceptions without a clean sheet to boot, we cheer for defenders to have an uneventful game. Exceptions are when everyone gets excited seeing Alonso getting at the end of crosses by azpi

This is the difference between the decent and the great FPL players; the 12-16 points a set of clean sheets across your back line every week can be the difference between scoring in the 50s and in the 70s on a regular basis.

I think Manchester City are going to score a barrowload of goals against Norwich and that's where I'll be concentrating my captaincy. It will be one or two high profile players turn to earn their haul and likely end up GW38's top points earners and one or two other players turn to troll. It's all about luck really. You pays your money and you takes your chances.
