Little to concern defences of Liverpool and Burnley after bore draw at Brighton

Brighton and Hove Albion 0-0 Newcastle United

  • Goals: None
  • Assists: None
  • Bonus: Dan Burn (£4.5m) x3, Lewis Dunk (£4.8m) x2, Mathew Ryan (£4.7m) x1

The two-word album review for Spinal Tap’s Shark Sandwich sprung to mind as Brighton and Hove Albion secured their Premier League safety with a goalless draw against Newcastle United.

Chances of quality were scarce in a desperately poor game that had a whiff of ‘pre-season friendly’ about it, although that was perhaps unsurprising given the frequency of fixtures over the last fortnight, the low stakes (Albion were pretty much already safe anyway) and the absence of a crowd.

Interest in these two teams is limited from a Fantasy perspective, with not one player on show having an ‘effective ownership’ of more than 4% in the top 10,000.

Brighton and Newcastle’s opponents in Gameweek 38+, Burnley and Liverpool, are much more in-demand, however, so this would have been a scouting mission of sorts for owners of Nick Pope (£5.1m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.7m), Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) et al.

On the basis of what we saw last night, there was little to worry FPL managers going big on the Clarets or the Reds – especially at the back.

The Magpies only forced one save out of Mathew Ryan (£4.7m), with the Australia international having to be alert to palm a Miguel Almiron (£5.8m) flick away from goal.

Most of the visitors’ threat came from set plays, with Dwight Gayle (£5.0m) glancing a header over just before half-time and substitute Andy Carroll (£5.4m) nodding an excellent opportunity wide late on.

So long as Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.3m) is fit, then Newcastle pose a danger to any side’s clean sheet and he’ll be the main concern for owners of Liverpool assets this weekend.

The Frenchman recovered from a calf problem to start at the Amex and showed glimpses of his talent but couldn’t do much with what little possession he was afforded, not registering a single shot or key pass.

At the other end of the pitch, Martin Dubravka (£5.1m) saved smartly from Leandro Trossard (£5.8m) and Adam Webster (£4.4m), with the Belgian also hooking a decent chance over in the final quarter of an hour.

A 0-0 was about right, though, and anyone targeting Trossard and Neal Maupay (£5.7m) for this meeting against a patched-up Newcastle defence who were without five recognised centre-halves were left short-changed.

That makeshift backline will be of interest to owners of Salah and Sadio Mane (£12.2m), who will no doubt give it a sterner examination on Sunday.

Danny Rose (£5.3m) and Emil Krafth (£4.3m) played either side of Federico Fernandez (£4.6m) in a back three, with Matt Ritchie (£5.3m) and Javier Manquillo (£4.3m) tasked with wing-back roles.

Steve Bruce said of his side’s display after the match:

Considering the problems we’ve had, I was delighted. The one thing you can’t deny about this group of players is their ability to roll their sleeves up and have a go.

We played two full-backs as centre-backs today and they were terrific. I was delighted with their attitude.

Emil’s got a really sore ankle and did well to carry on, but I think he epitomised the spirit of all them.

Three of Brighton’s backline hoovered up the bonus points, while Tariq Lamptey (£4.1m) has now started six of Albion’s last seven league games and is a budget defensive option going into Gameweek 38+, with Burnley themselves not renowned for scoring an abundance of goals.

The Seagulls may have been put to the sword by the two Manchester clubs and Liverpool recently but against the rest of the top flight, their defensive record is a bit better: Ryan has conceded 26 goals in 25 matches against non-big-six sides, keeping eight clean sheets along the way.

Brighton and Hove Albion XI (4-3-3): Ryan; Lamptey (Duffy 86′), Dunk, Webster, Burn; Bissouma (Propper 73′), Stephens, Mooy (March 58); Gross (Mac Allister 58′), Maupay (Murray 73′), Trossard.

Newcastle United XI (3-5-2): Dubravka; Krafth, Fernandez, Rose; Manquillo, Bentaleb, Shelvey, Almiron (Lazaro 86′), Ritchie; Saint-Maximin (Joelinton 74′), Gayle (Carroll 74′).

It says on FPL website that Taylor is 25% likely to play, but didn't Dyche say he'd be okay for the last game?

Dyche said he has a chance of making it.

He didn't say taylor was okay

Dyche ahead of GW37: "We are not sure because it is a low-grade injury so therefore he has a chance of recovering sooner rather than later it is just that this game has come too quick for him but he might have a chance for the last game."

The "might have a chance" bit is the key there. Could argue it should be at 50% but still a long way short of being passed fit.

        Any insight on Pulisic Skonto?

A fairly cryptic tweet up there ^^^^

Absolutely none, Maximus! I'm more "I don't know" than ITK. Even if he's fully fit, that display against United on Sunday is a bit of a concern re Pulisic. From my memory, Lampard doesn't often play him in a 3-4-3 - which is the formation he often reserves for 'tougher' opposition. Saying that, they beat City in a 4-3-3 with Alonso at left-back, so who the heck knows.

Given Dyche’s conservative approach in being players back from injuries, I’d be really surprised if Charlie Taylor is deemed fit to play on Sunday.

A hypothetical situation - what happens here?

Spurs finish 6th, Wolves 7th, Arsenal lower.
Arsenal win the cup, denying 7th placed wolves an EL place.
Wolves win the EL, qualifying for the CL, meaning there are 8 English teams in Europe.
I'm pretty sure that is not allowed - so would 6th placed Spurs be the ones to miss out?

    1. Rover
      • 7 Years
      3 years, 8 months ago

I'd think so, since Arsenal would have qualified on their own merit whereas Spurs would have qualified only because City had already qualified for CL. Probably that League Cup winer's spot will not get handed down to league position.

      1. BNMC

So basically, if Arsenal win the cup, all their fans will have to spend the next 3 weeks cheering for Wolves.

If you could keep only one of the following in a GW38 non-FH team, who would it be?

    A) Martial
    B) Antonio
    C) Pulisic

I am leaning towards B as Martial's away record is not as good and I will already have Bruno, and Villa will have to push for the win so that might leave spaces for Antonio, and Pulisic has the toughest fixture and lowest form and is just coming back from injury.

Starting to think that as good as Pope is - on a free hit is it not better to double up / triple up on the cheaper contingent of the Burnley defence and instead get Martinez for GK. If Burnley do keep a clean sheet, how many saves is Pope actually going to make against Brighton that in turn would usually give the bonus.

is anyone on a FH looking at the mane and mo double up? I think that might prove fruitful. Auba and Kane feel like FH traps and I can see man utd vs leicester being like a cup final and fairly nervy and not very open. Where as i can see the floodgates open at Newcastle

Three liverpool along with three city could be great

I'm not going to say Salah can't absolutely turbo haul away to Newcastle - because he absolutely could. But that being said - here's some numbers on Salah's season sliced up 4 different ways:

      1. Overall (Home vs Away)
      2. Overall (With Mane starting vs. Without)
      3. Home (With Mane vs. Without)
      4. Away (With Mane vs. Without)

      1. Overall (Home vs Away)

      Home: 143 points, 17 games, 8.4 PPA
      Away: 84 points, 15 games, 5.6 PPA
TLDR: He's a fair bit better at home, but not terrible away, on average

      2. Overall (With Mane starting vs. Without)

With Mane Starting: 151 points, 26 games, 5.8 PPA
Without Mane: 76 points, 6 hames, 12.7 PPA
TLDR: He's a lot better when Mane doesn't start, but again not exactly terrible (nearly 6 PPA) when Mane does start, *on average*

      3. Home (With Mane vs. Without)

With Mane Starting: 115 points, 15 games, 7.7 PPA
Without Mane: 28 points, 2 games, 14.0 PPA
TLDR: Scores nearly double the points at home without Mane - over a positively tiny 2 game sample size, but still...

      4. Away (With Mane vs. Without)

With Mane Starting: 36 points, 11 games, 3.3 PPA
Without Mane: 48 points, 4 games, 12.0 PPA
TLDR: You may as well have a bag of crisps in your FPL team instead of Salah away from home when Mane's about

In fairness, if you held him through thick & thin & perma-capped him you'd drown out a lot of the variation in his scoring

But my word, away from home when Mane starts, he may as well not be on the pitch - 3.3 points per appearance? From a 12.5m asset? Over 11 games (i.e. basically a full season of away games when you consider he got 0's from cpl, eve, mun away due to injury) that's just shocking:

This summary should be done on all big hitters. Players will not haul every game.

Salah is the highest points scorer. That is all which matters.

        1. Rover
          • 7 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

Not really. Salah is the highest points scorer across the whole season. But we are not picking for a whole season now, we are picking for one GW, so pointing out that Salah has consistently flopped away from home when Mane has also started is a relevant piece of information.

It is similar to when Martial's prospects are boosted when at home, and when KdB's are boosted when D.Silva does not start, and when Pulisic's is boosted when Giroud starts. All factors to be considered for a single GW's selection.

            • 14 Years
            3 years, 8 months ago

Yup - It's also missing the point that you don't have to keep a player all season, or even rely as heavily on them in certain fixtures, or certain types of fixtures

If a player has a very obvious points scoring deficiency (like Salah has had in away games when Mane has started - BACKWARD LOOKING) then we have to decide whether or not we should tailor our approach accordingly, forward looking

But that's not the same as saying that Salah will blank vs. Newcastle, because that's a very different statement

          • 14 Years

They do happen from time to time (Like Liverpool keeping 2 CS from their first 15 games, despite basically topping the league for XGc AND goals conceded followed by about 10 cleansheets in a row, without any real change in their underlying defensive stats - personnel, in particular Allison & Joemez helpd a lot)

And the above should be caveated with the fact that many of Salah's underlying attacking stats *DO NOT* follow the same deterioration as his "overlying stats" i.e. FPL points

          1. Greek Freak
            • 8 Years
            3 years, 8 months ago

Yes that's why I was wondering - his stats suggest underperformance for whatever reason as opposed to him being genuinely bad away, or genuinely bad with Mane. Personally I can't make my mind up on who to have for GW38 - Auba is currently in the front seat vs. Salah, but I might even just keep Mane, who is already in my team. Just because I can swap him on a FH doesn't mean I should necessarily...

In a once off GW its the toss of a coin - there's too much variance in a single GW to think that there'll be a very strong correlation between your decision's underlying logic, and it's result 🙂

Also thanks for reminding me about Liverpool's clean sheets - I started the season with double defence and kept getting punished for it, and as soon as I dropped by second defender they went on that crazy run of clean sheets 😆

Didn't you post it right before Salah's game with Brighton away? He scored twice and got one assist, plus his biggest haul ever came away to Watford if I recall it correct.

We know his stats are worse away but in any given gameweek he has potential to be highest scoring player, simple as that.

Possibility of Carson (4m) starting one of MCY's next two.
Pep did say he wanted all his players to get a go and Bravo is injured

Bilva and KDB have also played false 9 on occasions along with Sterling

I don't think Pep would play Gundogan and Rodri together vs. a bottom team. I'd go along with the rest of your predictions, but would put Bernardo in the midfield and a front three of Sterling, Mahrez and (hopefully) Foden.

How do these moves look for next week? (-4)

    Doherty > Aurier

    Mahrez > Dilva

    Jimi > Auba

Next week cap will be hard, especially when everyone has the likes of Kane, Auba, Salah and Sterling in their team.

    What looks nicer...

    A. Mahrez, TAA, Pope

    B. Sterling, Tark, Martinez

Leaning towards A personally but I suppose like almost every other Man C decision is completely guesswork right now.

No idea what to do with this team, want Dilva, Kane, Son or Robbo, don't really want to take more than -4:

    Henderson, Dubravka
    TAA, Tarkowski, Boly, Taylor, Williams
    Salah, KdB, Bruno, Sarr, Foden
    Jesus, Jimenez, Greenwood

    which one is better?

    A. Doherty and Foden > Dilva and Pieters for free (Would have to start either Greenwood or Jimenez)

B.Salah,Foden and Jimenez > Sterling,Richarlison and Wood for -4 (will have to start Doherty in this case but can then play Wood and bench Greenwood)

Quite like Aurier for 38. Could look at a cheaper Burnley defender to pair with Pope.
