Who will start for Man City in Gameweek 38+ after win at Watford?

Watford 0-4 Manchester City

  • Goals: Raheem Sterling x2 (£11.9m), Phil Foden (£5.5m), Aymeric Laporte (£6.3m)
  • Assists: Kyle Walker (£5.6m), Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne (£10.7m)
  • Penalties missed: Sterling
  • Penalties saved: Ben Foster (£4.9m)
  • Bonus Points: Sterling x3, Foster x2, Walker x2

Raheem Sterling (£11.9m) has all but cemented himself in Free Hit squads for Gameweek 38+ with his latest double-figure haul.

The premium midfielder’s 20.1% ownership got exactly what they wanted in the big win over Watford, as Sterling secured three attacking returns in a scintillating display and came off just after the hour-mark too.

Between the massive haul and rest time Pep Guardiola was able to give him, Sterling already looks likely to be a relatively sure starter when Norwich come to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

There was already plenty of interest in the Englishman before this latest Premier League outing, his score at Watford the fifth double-digit haul from a possible eight since the restart, but he has also added another feather to his cap. Penalties.

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.7m) has been the spot-kick taker for Manchester City since solving the club’s issues from 12 yards in February.

However, it appears that Sterling’s late charge for the Premier League Golden Boot award might have influenced the pecking order, with the Englishman taking the penalty against Watford which he won. Admittedly, he saw his effort saved by Ben Foster (£4.9m) but was savvy enough to bury the rebound.

“I seen I was on, I scored the first one and knew I was on 18, I knew if I got the second one and I was on the pitch for 90 I knew I had another chance of getting a hat-trick. So I wanted to try and get a hat-trick today but it didn’t happen but I’m really happy with the two goals. A winger to score 20 in the Premier League is a great achievement, we have one more game left and hopefully, I can do it then.” – Raheem Sterling

While Sterling has been involved in eight of Manchester City’s last 16 goals, De Bruyne has had a direct hand in just two, the latest an assist for Aymeric Laporte‘s (£6.3m) headed effort on Tuesday evening.

However, the Belgian was certainly unfortunate not to come away with a bigger score at Watford.

Just before half-time, Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) got to the dead-ball line and cut the ball back for De Bruyne, who was arriving at the back post, but he could only hook it high and wide under pressure from the defence.

The two players swapped roles after the break, De Bruyne pouncing on a loose ball from a Foster save, squaring to Bernardo, who could not find the target.

Then, on the hour-mark, the Belgian won a free-kick in a prime position on the edge of the box. Stepping up, De Bruyne always looks like scoring direct efforts from this sort of range and he went incredibly close against Watford, finding the top corner perfectly, only for Foster to produce a fantastic stop.

De Bruyne would have also received the assist for a Sterling in the second half, were it not rebounded to Foden to convert.

While Sterling was able to get on and off with just over 60 minutes to his name, owners of Gabriel Jesus (£9.9m) might be a little more concerned ahead of Gameweek 38+.

The Brazilian striker, who was arguably a little unfortunate to blank at Watford as a late goal was ruled out for offside, has now played 90 minutes in each of the last two matches in all competitions. That fact, combined with Sterling’s managed minutes at Vicarage Road, could see Jesus drop out of the starting XI against Norwich, especially as his English counter-part can play the centre-forward role and is potentially on a late charge for the Golden Boot.

Similarly, De Bruyne and Phil Foden (£5.5m) also lasting the entirety of the Watford perhaps concerning their respective owners, especially in light of Riyad Mahrez (£8.6m) and David Silva (£7.4m) earning rests in Gameweek 37+. The Algerian came on for Sterling for the last half-hour, while Silva, ahead of a Premier League finale against Norwich was an unused substitute. A start on the last day of the league campaign looks even more assured now, and the Spaniard has double-figure hauls in each of his two most recent home matches.

Silva has played alongside De Bruyne recently, but 90 minutes in each of the last two in all competitions could be enough for Guardiola to consider benching the Belgian.

Foden’s case is harder to assess, especially after he stole in to convert Sterling’s rebounded shot in the second half. Manchester City’s number 47 got his rest in the FA Cup semi-final, playing just 24 minutes of the defeat to Arsenal and has started all but one home Premier League match since the return of football.

With Jesus also getting sufficient game-time to place a question mark over his starting berth, there is a chance the Manchester City front-three could feature Sterling as the spearhead, leaving room for Mahrez and Foden either side.

Anyone looking to Guardiola’s defence for the final Gameweek of the season were given a helping hand by the Manchester City manager.

After he had found the net in the second half, Laporte was handed a brief resting period at the end of the Watford win, replaced by John Stones (£5.3m) in the 74th minute.

That should see the premium centre-back start against Norwich, who have conceded more goals from set-plays than any other side this season…

“Laporte had a tough tough injury important player for us a lot of time out. a big guy, needed more time to regain condition. today was one of the best games he has played int he last month.” – Pep Guardiola

Watford XI (4-3-3): Foster; Femenía, Dawson, Kabasele, Mariappa; Hughes, Doucouré (Chalobah 82′), Cleverley; Pereyra (Masina 87′), Deeney (Welbeck 67′), Sarr.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Cancelo, Laporte (Stones 74′), Garcia, Walker (Zinchenko 64′); De Bruyne, Rodrigo, B Silva; Sterling (Mahrez 64′), Jesus, Foden.

      I think either B option.
Robbo has been in good form. Also for VVD the magpies conceded a stupid amount of headed chances. Salah will still try for the boot so I would have him over Mane.
Just eye test wise neither Mane or Trent have not been on it the last few weeks.

I think this is decent but KDB and Foden might not be the best City options. Not taking more hits so this is it for 38

        Yeah but already on -8
-8 this week too which worked ok so far with Salah out and Sterling in and C.
But now no Salah for 38 and Foden probably not getting many minutes it’s not looking great. But Kane and Auba combo I hope will compensate for that.

The love for DSilva on here for GW38 is a bit OTT. Not saying he's not a good option, ofc he is but once the confirmation bias gets going, it gets out of control.
Wonderful player but always prone to being an assisting the assister guy in FPL.
I prefer Sterling, KDB and Mahrez over him this week and that's just City.

Martial and Fernandes Vs that OAP Leicester defence/ Mane and Salah Vs that injury ravaged Newcastle defence/ Son Vs Palace are all better options too (in my humble opinion).

1 He is cheaper than other options that you mentioned, Also people have most of those players + Dilva, not Either/Or
2 I disagree when it comes to the comparison with KDB, I think he generally plays ahead of KDB and is slightly more central to fantasy points when both start

It’s the guaranteed (?) start against Norwich Roy

      That’s no ordinary fixture

He’s also been excelling from an FPL output perspective his year hen he plays - he’s only started less than 20 games yet has 18 attacking returns & 15 baps

And none of those games were home to Norwich in his last ever premier league game 🙂

Very good chance of 8-12 points - with a fair bit of upside if city score 10 - that’s all you can really ask of your captain

Fair points as well. I just have a feeling he'll get taken off with just one assist. It's how these things tend to turn out after so much hype.

          Yep that’s entirely possible

But something tells me he’s getting a 90 minutes vs Norwich, which should give him more than enough chances to get involved - that’s probably the single fixture with most potential for goals in the entire premier league calendar (on paper)

His last 3 league starts have all been 90’s too

Is triple City midfield equivalent to Mo Mane?

Mo Mane essentially never haul together - one simultaneous double digit haul in 2 seasons. Likewise with 3 City mids you are almost inevitably factoring in a relative failure or quite possibly 2

Yes you’re covering more bases in looking for the big haul by having 3 but more efficient perhaps to go 2 and get more points elsewhere.

    1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • 14 Years
      3 years, 9 months ago

      Depends which triple

KDB, Sterling, Dilva should be beautiful - you basically get a “bonus” CS too 🙂

      1. pingissimus
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 9 months ago

Only one of KdB and Sterling will be on pens though 🙂 Know which one I’d want if I were Pep. Likewise Dilva has been stealing DFKs. Poor old KdB

Points get spread. Even with City there’s a finite number available

One of them will surely hit. Two quite possibly. All three?

        1. tokara
          • 9 Years

Not if they tear Norwich 8-0 to end the season

          3 years, 9 months ago

Same dilemma surely if you go with 2 though? One will quite possibly hit, but both?

Home to Norwich, you want as much attacking representation as you can get there imo

          1. pingissimus
            • 5 Years

There is of course the danger you go 2 and miss. Posted on last page how with 2 prime mids I missed almost completely in the 5-0 against Brighton. Had I flipped the coin the other way I would have crushed it with RazC - still only with 2 mids though.

Wondering whether it’s possibly optimal to get 2 - the right 2!!! - and then spread funds elsewhere. Any number of juicy fixtures after all.

Better odds of 2 hitting than 3. The third one may help improve odds of getting haul but also perhaps increases odds of a relative miss.

Think it might apply this week given Kane and Auba have huge GI in favourable fixtures.

                Like it

Think Son could be the pick over Mahrez anyway. Haven't checked but I'm going to assume he has much higher GI and I really like that fixture for him

I'm stuck with KdB - not the worst of course but he seems to have lost key dead ball plays

It’ll all be team dependent, hits should be taken with caution for example

But it’s not intuitive how you would want *less* of an attack playing home to Norwich rather than *more* tbh

How often do 3 players hit simultaneously? You need a monster score - they happen but Watford were completely hapless and only let in 4 - soothing like that seems most probable to me.

It's risk reward but I'd suggest the higher reward was likely getting only 2 - the right 2.

Don’t know if I would Keep both Bruno and Martial on a FH.
I would want 3 City mids
I would consider both out for Mahrez and something bounty like Moura or Richardson.
Oh I just saw Ederson. Get Martinez and get that cash into attack or even to a an attacking defender like Robbo. We all play different and it depends if you are defending ML leads etc but it’s the last week go attack and have a punt - traditionally there are lots of goals in the last week

    Bench boost team:

    Henderson
    Tarkowski Doherty AWB
    Salah Bruno KDB Dilva Foden
    Jimenez Ings
    Martinez Greenwood Egan C Taylor

If Taylor is still a doubt best replacement for 4.3.
0.1 ITB. Would be for a hit.

    Kane Ings Nketiah

Current FH draft, would appreciate any thoughts. I’m chasing a ML rival by about 30 point:

    Martinez

    Beardsley / long / pieters

    Salah / kdb / dsilva/ sterling / Antonio

    Kane / auba

    Button / nketiah / Williams / branthwaite

I guess one thing to consider
might be KDB to Son and Antonio to Bruno/Martial but even if you can stretch to that, it’s a coin toss whether it would work out better.

Yeah good suggestions, I’ll have a tinker and see. I was going KDB less in some previous drafts with Jesus in and slightly beefed up defence but figure he’s going to go all out for the assists record.

That’s the only change I would consider too.
KDB to Mahrez allows an Antonio upgrade not that Antonio is a bad selection.
All risk reward defence for that attack- gotta love it. I hope it’s works for you. GL

Yep very true and works budget wise leaving 0.7 I could use in defence if I wanted to move away from the Burnley triple up. Hmmm decisions! Appreciate the feedback

I love the way you are going for this with the attack.
I think KDB to Mahrez probably not enough cash for Antonio to Son
But allows Bruno or Martial I think.

Yep mahrez over kdb works and allows either Bruno or martial. Need to weigh up if worth it as think kdb will get the assists record

    Pope
    Doherty Trent Garcia
    Raz KDB Mané Bruno Martial
    Ings Greenwood

    Button Nketiah Lamptey Saiss

    1 FT. 1.3 itb.

    1) Bruno/Martial to Son
    2) Doherty to Robbo/VVD
    3) Saiss to Digne and bench Greenwood (4-5-1)
    4) Something else

Is Auba a good pick for FH 38 given that Watford will battle for their lives now?

    1. BNMC
      • 4 Years
      3 years, 9 months ago

It's a question of how much Arsenal will want the win. They can't finish above 8th now, but surely they wouldn't want to end the league campaign with a defeat. And I don't get the talk about FA Cup rest because there are 6 days between the Watford game and the cup final.

      1. George Agdgdgwngo

Very good point. The cup final shouldn't be a factor. If anything, the full team should play for match fitness. Feeling uneasy having Auba now.

Currently have Kane and Auba. Not sure about Jesus because I have him for weeks and he has been rather disappointing. Might be rested as well.

    3. Andy_Social

Do they have a battle in them? Their defence is hopeless. On the other hand Arsenal and Auba in particular seem to be focused on the cup final.

Personally I've been bricking myself at the top of my ML being rapidly hunted down by the guy in 2nd. He has Auba, I have Rashford. I'm feeling calmer than I was a few hours ago.

I'm chasing my ML leader who does not have a FH while I do. Thinking to stick to Rashford instead of bringing in Auba. At least Rashford has something to play for!

    GW 38 team

    Pope

    Armstrong Egan Basham

Taken a -4 to get sterling in, would you take anymore hits, had a bad season so just tempted to take one more.. Maybe Mendy/Tierney for a bit of fun!!
