Pundits Playoff – The Semi-finals arrive

Drama in the Pundits Playoff, as the #1 seeded team get knocked out of the Champions League at the quarter-finals stage. But before I launch into the results and fixtures, it is first time to delve into the mind of Tets McGee, manager of team BSC Small Boys (in the park) FC, and winner of the much-coveted Best Manager of the Period award for Period 4.
Tets agreed to be interviewed by our very own Boris Bodega (that’s me…) –

Boris Bodega: How does it feel to be the Best Pundits Playoff Manager for Period 4?

Tets McGee: Thanks, Boris. Obviously, it is a great honour to be voted best manager ever of all time in period 4. I was not expecting it because going into the last game we were a loss away from a 50% record which wouldn’t have been as good. If I can take this opportunity to impart one bit of advice to any budding managers dreaming of hitting the big time like me, it would probably be just keep doing the same thing over and over, even if you are getting bad results and eventually you are bound to get a different result. This is proof of that. I have a saying I live by…“there is no I in team. But there is in Idiot”. I have never really understood that. But everyone says it to me, so to be honest, I have just taken it as my mantra ray. I have lost track of what I was meant to be saying…

BB: You absolutely nailed your H2H selections, not least in your quarter-final match where they proved to be the deciding factor in your win over Brazil Nuts. Are you prepared to reveal the secrets of your selection process for the H2H battles?

TM: The boys are bound to give me a bit of stick for revealing our methods here, but one of the lads, let’s just call him VanDijkstowatchoutfor (because that’s his name) had a great idea. We hold weekly piggyback races. The losing pair get benched, the winning pair and the “piggy” coming in second get captained. It keeps everyone happy except for our lad Ben Mee who has a broken leg at the moment and keeps finding himself on the bench along with his unlucky partner couldaBenMee. But he is due a run out so who knows maybe this is his week. I have considered breaking a couple of the other guy’s legs just to level the playing field a bit, but something doesn’t quite sit right every time I go to do it. I have also noticed that the team I submit, isn’t the one that gets played. My vice-captain Jubilanus puts our team in religiously and he says it’s just one of those things that somehow the team is reverting to the one he suggests we should have played…Apparently it’s one of those computer viruses or something.

BB: So your team are through to the Semi-Finals, which team are you most afraid of? And why?

TM: I would probably have to say the Neville Longbottoms or the Dowie Ducks. Never liked the cut off their Jib.

BB: How have you coped with managing your own personal FPL team through project restart?

TM: I have had to put the team first. Mainly because I have been doing so badly. It’s no coincidence I bottom scored for our team against the Brazil nuts. I very much adopt a do as I say approach definitely do not do as I do. Right, I am off to take a 16 point hit.

Many thanks to Tets for this fascinating insight into his team management (and his brain).

Quarter Finals Results

A quick reminder of the format for the knockout stages, each team of fifteen players has to nominate two players for the bench, whose scores are not counted, and three players for the H2H battles, the winners of which extra bonus points that are added on to their team’s final score – H2H A (30 points), H2H B (20 points) and H2H C (10 points).

Champions League

QF#1 of the Pundits Playoff Champions League (PPCL) quarters, was between The Keane Fifteen (1st seed) and Blame it on Rio (8th seed). The underdogs got off to a great start (lots of Antonios I am guessing), and the winners of the group stages never recovered. Blame it on Rio won all three H2H battles to gain 60 extra points, and won by an overall score of 981 – 835, and progress to the semi-finals. The Keane Fifteen, as second-highest scoring losers, progress down to the Pundits Playoff You’re Ropey League of Shame (PPYRLOS) semi-finals.

QF#2 pitted WhenTheOWENgetsTough (2nd seed) up against Nirvana Scott Talent (7th seed). Despite grabbing 50 of the available bonus points, WhenTheOWENgetsTough couldn’t cope with their high scoring opposition, and Nirvana Scott Talent won by a 40 points margin, 810 – 770, and they go through to the PPCL semis. As the lowest scoring losers, WhenTheOWENgetsTough drop down to the Pundits Playoff Wooden Spoon (PPWS) semi-finals.

QF#3 saw the 3rd seed, “15” Musketeers looking for revenge against Unbelievable Jeff FC (6th seed), who won the Classic League by a mere two points! Revenge is a dish best served cold, but someone clearly left the heating on. The H2H bonus points were split down the middle, but Unbelievable Jeff FC won by a massive 193 point margin, 966 – 773, and they find themselves in the PPCL semi-finals, “15” Musketeers drop down to the PPWS semi-finals.

QF#4 was always going to be a hard-fought match between the 4th and 5th seeds of the competition, Brazil Nuts and BSC Small Boys (in the park) FC respectively. And fireworks is what we got, with both teams scoring two of the highest scores of the week. In fact, Brazil nuts had the highest overall team score with 1104 before subs and H2H bonus, but incredibly BSC Small Boys managed to grab an emphatic win, by winning all 60 bonus points, and benching just 68 points – Brazil Nuts saw 140 languishing on their sidelines. Final score was 1045 – 964 to the BSC Small Boys, who progress to the PPCL semis. As the second-highest scoring losers, Brazil Nuts move to the PPYRLOS semi-finals.

You’re Ropey League of Shame

QF#5 – Holly’s Hamsters (9th seed) took on Slaven’s Ball-itch (12th seed) and the result was the closest of all the quarter-finals. Both teams shared the H2H bonus points, and the Hamsters managed a nine-point win at the final whistle, beating Slaven’s Ball-itch 890 – 881 and progress to the PPYRLOS semi’s. Their defeated opponents will have a semi-final in the PPWS.

QF#6, the last quarter’s match pitted A Whole Lawro B*llocks up against Back to Square Owen. Despite grabbing 40 bonus points from the H2H battles, Back to Square Owen lost by a substantial margin to A Whole Lawro B*llocks, 859 – 779. The B*llocks move onto the PPYRLOS semi’s, Back to Square Owen find themselves fighting it out in the PPWS semis.

Semi-Final match fixtures

In the Champions League, Blame it on Rio will face BSC Small Boys (in the park) FC in SF#1, and Nirvana Scott Talent are up against Unbelievable Jeff FC in SF#2.

In the You’re Ropey League of Shame, SF#3 will pit Holly’s Hamsters against A Whole Lawro B*llocks, and in SF#4 Brazil Nuts will take on The Keane Fifteen.

In the Wooden Spoon matches, Slaven’s Ball-itch will be fighting Back to Square Owen in SF#5 to avoid appearing this final, and the same goes for both “15” Musketeers and WhenTheOWENgetsTough who face each other SF#6.

Link to the lievscores sheet, and the finals results is here.

Deadline for team submission is 3.30pm this Saturday! Good luck all!

Cheers Boris, and Tets McGee - All teams need an inspiring and wise manager, truly some words to live by there.

Top 4 seeds all gone! Fancy SF#1 to be a tight one.

Really strange to see a 22 week tournament not having any of the 1-4 seeds in the semifinal. Boris kept mentioning that 1 playing 8, 2 playing 7 is advantage enough.. How that was an advantage in a 1 week virtual FPL KO is beyond our imagination..

All of us thoroughly enjoyed the tournament and hopefully, all of us will be back stronger next season. Rule changes to help teams that end higher in the table can maybe be thought of for next season..

I will handle this lads. If I may impart one more bit of wisdom. I always find it best to win the game if I want to get through to the next round. Wingeing is fine and has its place but it doesn't tend to get the result overturned as much as I would like it to.

It was a pretty silly week, there were bad omens of the end times like McGoldrick and Solanke bagging braces. Sterling’s fall over, hit on the head, ball trundles over the line for the hattrick was the final nail that told me our luck wasn’t in!

Tets - BSC Small Boys have had a good run, but it’s well known amongst us Pundits that you win nothing with kids. We don’t want to see the young uns get hurt, so here’s our offer:

    Az v Lateriser - Mano a Mano

    Bring it on.

In that case we accept your challenge. The rules are as such. Neither can play wc or free hit. Neither must be a captain( except Az if he wins the piggy back race) and their points shall be added to the teams total score to determine the winner. Tets never runs from a challenge.

In that case we accept the proposed rules and suggest the following amendments: Lateriser can be our captain if he wins our weekly rock-paper-scissors contest. And only chips which have not yet been used by either manager can be played this gameweek. Game on.

Looking forward to the Semi's. Thankfully this shocking gameweek fell in the mid week break. Hopefully I'll bounce back strong in gw37 and help Blame it On Rio through to the final. Imagine if we met Nirvana in the final after the handbags in the group match. One game at a time though as we've a tough semi to get through.

I’ve been scouting the BSC Small Boys piggyback trials. Excellent technique and good to see they’re using the latest safety harnesses, but they still can’t hold a candle to Latriser; he’s been carrying our team for half a season.

If one of my boys was that far ahead of the others I'd have no choice but to break his legs and you know what he would thank me for it. When he could speak again. My methods get a bit loose. That's why I will be leading the team out this week in the first captains' match, to show that I expect no one to outscore me and embarrass themselves and believe me there will be a price to pay for any1 in my team who gets out of line and scores even a single point more or less than me. Even if I get 28 points. Again.

Nirvana Scott Talent (7) v Unbelievable Jeff (6)

I'll do the proper overall differentials tomorrow night, but the H2H matches are as follows (both 30 pointer and 10 pointer H2H of UJ tripled-up on Burnley defence......) - according to my calculations.

30 pointer: NST = Saiss, Foden, Salah, Martial, Jesus, Rashford. UJ = 6 points + Sterling x 2, Ings, Jimmy, Auba
20 pointer: NST = 8 points + Doherty, Foden. UJ = TAA, Boly, Sterling
10 pointer: NST = Patricio, TAA, AWB, KDB, Mahrez, Jesus. UJ = 17 points + Mane, Sterling, Auba, Maupay.

In the overall, NST are on 110 points after 16 players played, UJ are on 127 (131 minus a 4 point hit) after 19 players played.

Doherty has given you a fighting chance. The game between the 2 H2Hb players is interesting. Their remaining players are so similar but another substitution could go either way. I'm tempted to quote one of my heroes Doh!

I know! It's a nervous wait for the City line-up. We need Sterling to outperform the rest of their attack.

I have us at +40pts, before tonight.

Hey folks, I've got to report that WhenTheOWENgetsTough's lineup is wrong. We submited 40min prior to the deadline.

    Hi Boris,

Looks like the default lineup has been selected for WhenTheOwenGetsTough fixture. Narcos (Team Manager) says that the lineup was submitted 40mins before deadline but its incorrectly showing as default lineup on the google sheets. Can you please check?

    1. Sizzlers (@FPL_SMR)
      • 4 Years

Also, realised the H2H live scores for WhenTheOwneGetsTough aren't reflected on the google sheets. So, if our opponents are leading H2H A, B or C, the document shows their LIVE H2H score as 30, 20, 10 BUT if WTOGT are leading the H2H, the score shows as ZERO!

Anyone care to explain why such ambiguity?

    Hi there
I've checked to see what happened and your manager forgot to enter a second sub, unfortunately, which is why the default team lineup ended up being submitted. We did give him until 55 minutes after the deadline, and sent a reminder email about 10 minutes before finally importing all the lineups.
Apologies but the rules have been made very clear, and the issue with the lineup was clearly highlighted on the sheet at the time.
I am looking into creating a pop up warning on the sheets if a manager tries to close it without all H2H and sub slots completed correctly, so hopefully these honest mistakes are avoided next season.

As happened with the previous team that had this issue, we will have to stick with the rules, and your team will forego any of the H2H bonus points you may have won, and your default team lineup has been used. Apologies if this seems unfair, but if we do not stick to the deadlines it defeats the purpose of having them in the first place.

Note to all team managers - CHECK your team lineup is showing correctly before you close your team sheet.

Thanks for the reply. However, in this scenario, can an exception not be made ? The manager submitted the playing 13 and 1st sub on time and merely forgot to add the 2nd sub as you say. Sub scores are anyways irrelevant to the fixture. So, penalizing the entire team and forfeiting H2Hs seems way too harsh. Can this be reconsidered ?

Thanks Sreeraj, despite forfeiting 25 H2H pts! Also, we just realised that had our original lineup been approved, ALL the H2Hs would've been a TIE! Who could have guessed that?

Sorry Boris but this is pretty weaksauce. There is no ambiguity in our intentions and punishment to our alleged error is completely disproportionate.

Why even bother have us in H2H match ups if we can’t win points? You are giving a completely unfair advantage to the other team in the match up. I don’t care if “that’s the rules”, that’s a stupid rule and I’m calling it out.

We are not trying to change anything post deadline or take any advantage once results or opposition teams are known. Whose going to cheat to win a wooden spoon competition?

I was the 2nd sub and in this knowledge I took an extra hit this week. I knew all this because our manager sent round confirmation of the team as uploaded so we can all see. There is already a confirmation box and it is green with yes in it. This issue isn’t at our end.

Honestly I think it is more likely someone has sabotaged it than we have made an error, we went through 20 weeks of tournament without issue but suddenly since the restart there have been at least three instances of teams being sure they are set up right but then finding out later they are not.

The way the rules have been applied (not just to ourselves but with the other issues for other teams since the restart) has shown that there is a shocking lack of community spirit in this “community” tournament compared to previous years (when I might add that yourself and Lord were fantastic in engaging with people).

Thanks for the honest and frank feedback. This is the first time we have run the community tournament. Apologies if it does not reach the standard you expect. We will look at how we set up the rules around team submission and deadlines etc. if we decide to run the competition next season.

        Much appreciated as always.

I wrote a very long response that has been marked for review (so will never see the light of day) so I’ll be brief here.

This is nonsense, you have our playing 13 and H2H selection, that is not in dispute.

Our punishment is completely disproportionate in reordering our team and handing our opponent a huge unearned advantage in H2H.

Blaming us when we know we have not erred is a weak move that very much lives up to your grav.

Thanks for your feedback. I have emailed you team manager about what has happened, I will let him explain. To be absolutely clear, the correct lineup was entered a good hour and a half after the deadline.
Apologies for not reversing the decision, but the committee have decided that we should try and stick to the written rules as much as possible, to be fair to everyone.

So are you saying that the Playing 13 + 1st sub was submitted pre-deadline and 2nd sub was added 90mins after deadline? If that's the case, it takes me back to my original question - Why penalise the entire team for a missing 2nd sub? Its not like that slot could have been filled my more than one team after all.

            🙂

One more reply and then I am dropping it.
            1. Without both subs entered you have a starting team of 14, not 13! Obviously if I could see the starting 13, the missing sub would kind of been obvious to work out.
            2. I cannot see what the issue is with the lineup when I am importing them as I don't look at the team sheets. I just see a simple 'yes' or 'no'.
            3. Have explained the reasoning behind the dropped H2H points before, but we may be dropping this rule IF we run it again next season. Dropping the rule at this stage of the tourney is unfair to the team that have already had to suffer from it.

Boris, thanks for replying and sorry for comparison to actual BoJo, though your old Salah grav was much harder to argue against 🙂

I don’t expect it changed now but based on what you have said above you had a complete team bar one sub so (pre-deadline) you had a selected 13 + H2H that was valid(even if the s/s as a whole wasn’t valid)?

As such there would be no doubt about what our intended line up was? So what I am asking is not to change our team post deadline, but recognise what was selected on our sheet at the deadline.

I don’t know if it is a coincidence but on Saturday morning the google sheet we use for our team went all funny. Several of us lost access to the sheet and until I lost access I was seeing peculiar effects. It seems a bit harsh if a team loses points if google had a blip.

I have also noted weird behaviour on the score form this week. It populates the cells briefly and then a few seconds later they all go empty and some are blacked out, then shows loading in the first score row (row 4) and sticks there. I've not bothered to figure out why yet, might just be local to me.

The whole thing above leaves a sour taste though, our manager clearly submitted the team correctly and has evidence yet we still being punished regardless. Ah well, only a daft little game at end of the day.

I have had that issue (where the live scores sheet shows "loading..." and stays that way forever) and have figured out how to fix it. Try this - enter any score into a green cell and hit Enter. All the other cells should show up. I don't understand how or why it works, but it worked for me. Actually took me a couple of weeks before I realized I had to do that. Hope it works for you, albeit a bit late at this stage 🙂

    Start the car!

Nirvana Scott Talent (7) v Unbelievable Jeff (6)

Latest situation after autosubs, chip adjustments, etc by my calculations........

    NST = DDG x 2, Bruno x 2, Rashford x 4, Greenwood x 4; Salah x 2, Alonso x 2, Giroud
    UJ = 69 points + Maguire x 2, AWB, Martial x 4, Fabianski; Mane x 2, Willian

30 pointer: NST = Martial, Salah, Rashford. UJ = 39 points
20 pointer: Already won by UJ by 9 points
    10 pointer: NST = AWB, TAA. UJ = 22 points + Mane.

Major hauls by Rashford and Salah appears our only hope. The other hopes are Bob Hope and no hope.
