Improved Villa defence brings goal difference into relegation battle

Aston Villa 1-0 Arsenal

  • Goals: Trézéguet (£5.2m)
  • Assists: Tyrone Mings (£4.4m)
  • Bonus Points: Mings x3, Trézéguet x2, Jack Grealish x1 (£5.9m), Ezri Konsa x1 (£4.3m)

Aston Villa put the club’s Premier League destiny in their own hands with a massive 1-0 win over Arsenal on Tuesday evening.

It was a result that took Dean Smith’s men above Watford, whose goal difference had taken a battering at the hands of Manchester City, setting up a relegation showdown on the final day of the season.

Villa will travel to West Ham knowing that a win will keep them up, as will bettering the results of Watford and Bournemouth.

The Hornets have perhaps drawn the short straw in that they travel to face an Arsenal side that might want to produce a reaction to their Gameweek 37+ defeat at Villa Park, while Bournemouth face an out-of-sorts Everton side.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m) is sure to have felt Tuesday’s loss most keenly, especially as it left him three goals short of Jamie Vardy‘s (£9.7m) tally in the Premier League Golden Boot race.

With Watford managerless and conceding a minimum of three goals in four of their last six outings, the Arsenal striker could be a force to be reckoned with on Sunday… We know Aubameyang is capable of man-of-the-match displays, as he showed in the recent FA Cup win over Manchester City.

“We need to transmit this enthusiasm and passion. There’s going to be some ups and downs but it’s good sometimes to see the reality and improve.” – Mikel Arteta

It was their continually improving defence that secured the win for Aston Villa against Arsenal, although they did ride their luck as Eddie Nketiah (£4.3m) struck the inside the post late on.

Villa have now kept two clean sheets in the last three matches, each one leading to a massive three points for the team. Without the changes Smith made at the back, they would not be in the position they are ahead of the final weekend of the season.

And now that goal difference is set to play such a key factor in the Premier League relegation battle, the Villans could play conservatively, opting to utilise the pace and guile of Jack Grealish (£5.9m) on the counter-attack as they did on Tuesday evening.

“We have to make sure we win at West Ham. We knew we had to show a lot of courage and work rate. It was a real team performance today. We defended the box very well, I don’t remember Pepe Reina making a save. The players all grew in stature tonight. Jack had his best game since the restart, Ezri has gone onto another level. It was a real team performance and it had to be.” – Dean Smith

If Villa were to execute their Gameweek 37+ gameplan at West Ham on Sunday, it could make life harder for assets such as Michail Antonio (£7.1m) and Jarrod Bowen (£6.4m), who have been in decent form of late.

However, relying on Villa for goals themselves might not be the smartest move for Fantasy managers in Gameweek 38+. After all, they have scored more than one goal just once since the return of Premier League football.

As much as Smith’s men managed the win over Arsenal well, there were few moments of real danger posed by their attackers.

Trézéguet‘s (£5.2m) winning goal was a stunning effort although it might be hard to replicate at the London Stadium.

Outside of that strike, Villa and their Arsenal counterparts were mostly feeding on scraps.

The home side came closest to pressing home their advantage in the 74th minute when Grealish went on a powerful counter-attacking drive. His pass into substitute Keinan Davis (£4.3m) was perfectly weighted to allow the striker to get one-on-one with Emi Martínez (£4.4m), only to pull his effort wide of the far post.

John McGinn (£5.2m) then had a powerful shot saved in the 77th minute, the Arsenal goalkeeper able to stand up to the effort.

Aston Villa XI (4-3-3): Reina; Targett, Mings, Konsa, Elmohamady (Guilbert 25′); Hourihane (Nakamba 73′), D Luiz, McGinn (Lansbury 90+3′); Grealish, Samatta (Davis 72′), Trézéguet.

Arsenal XI (3-4-3): Martínez; Kolasinac, D Luiz (Pépé 60′), Holding; Saka (Tierney 60′), Torreira (Xhaka 46′), Ceballos, Cédric (Willock 79′); Aubameyang, Lacazette, Nketiah.

There is something wrong with this team. It is far too dull imo. And there is no Salah. Yet I cannot find clever way to get him in. Any ideas how to improve her?

It's a good side. Salah is the only big miss and I personally like the Spurs players as differentials. If you really want Salah, I'd suggest KDB->Salah and downgrade either Rashford, Son or TAA. I'd probably do TAA->fodder and KDB->Salah.

Oh, and I'd probably have Nketiah instead of Connolly unless you really need the 0.1. Don't expect much of him, but if you do need one off the bench I'd prefer him.

Since chasing downgrading TAA is something to think about. Vardy may score and he hasn't been himself lately. Thx. Will have to see how they perform.

With a number of individual narratives at play for Manchester City’s final Premier League match of the season vs Norwich — which assets are you considering for inclusion in your Gameweek 38 squad?

David Silva has averaged 8.8pts per start since the restart and is keenly expected to feature by the community on what will be his final league appearance for the sky blues. Penalty duty has been mooted for Silva, but will Raheem relinquish the responsibility after eagerly snatching duty from De Bruyne yesterday evening?!

Kevin De Bruyne’s output has dropped over the past 5 game weeks with just two attacking returns — but he as the current overall top scoring FPL asset this campaign with 11 goals and 22 (FPL) assists this season — and an opportunity to record break the assist tally record — can we afford to ignore.

Raheem Sterling has turned his “mediocre” (—ok, whatever—) season upside down since the restart with 8 goals and 4 (FPL) assists. Sterling publicly turned his target from Golden Boot to “just” a 20-goal season yesterday, but the stage could be set for a GW8 style mega-haul, with a City team eager to exact revenge on a now beleaguered Norwich side who earlier this season turned the blues over 3-2.

Phil Foden returned to the scoresheet last night and has featured in every game bar one since the restart. Having offered a budget friendly route into the City attack, the scene may be set for an emphatic ending — or perhaps simply a symbolic substitution for Silva is on the cards.

Gabriel Jesus has started in each of City’s last 8 matches in all competitions, however returns have been low key given City’s output, with just a single double-digit FPL return since the restart. Similarly, Riyad Mahrez sizzled in DGW30+, but has since underwhelmed — with owners arguably suffering the brunt of the Pep Roulette.

Finally, City’s defence shouldn’t be ruled out by any means — Walker and Laporte both adding attacking returns to their tallies in GW37+, in a squad which has turned over 6 clean sheets in the 9 Premier League matches since the restart. Here however (Ederson aside) the Pep Roulette is perhaps at its most unpredictable! Click on the link below (sadly can’t post images here) for a matrix detailing minutes for each of City’s key squad members — enjoy!

David Silva and Sterling are certainly two best options. Including KdB costs a lot and the amount of midfield slots is limited. So including all three and likesbof Salah, Kane and perhaps Auba is an issue without compromising too much elsewhere imo.

      KDB & Sterling on board

Planning Pulisic > Dilva FT this week

I don't like the Silva (c) or TC over Sterling. Players don't magically play better on their last game. Sterling is the one who got a rest, who's chasing goals and the GB, who's playing more advanced and will get more big chances.

It's going to be Sterling (c) for me unless for some reason we find out he doesn't start (which is extremely unlikely bar injury).

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

People either seem to really get, or really misunderstand the Dilva situation - it's not the direct appeal of it being his last game though (because by itself - that's meaningless)

But rather it's what that last game very likely infers - i.e. that he is guaranteed (?) a start - which combined with the juicy opposition is all we can really ask for - rightly or wrongly, I just don't feel that Sterling carries that same certainty with the way Pep has been managing him (going for the golden boot & yet again Pep hooks him on a hattrick after 60 minutes yesterday!)

Now, if I had a teamsheet, and they were both on it, I'd think more about Sterling - that's for 100% sure.

But even then, Dilva has got 90's in his last three league starts whereas Sterling (even though he's doing mega damage) always seems more likely to get the early bath

Plus Dilva has absolutely knocked it out of the park from an FPL perspective this season - he has 18 attacking returns in about 20 starts - and none ofthose 20 starts came at home to this Norwich side

So he's got the big white TC armband for me at the minute (or least he will when i make the FT 🙂 ) but let's see how things develop between now & Sunday - particularly on the old teamsheet front 😉

            • 14 Years
            3 years, 8 months ago

Although in fairness - I really do have to acknowledge that with Sterling's form and the early bath yesterday, maybe doing anything other than backing him with the armband is trying to be too clever - so need to think about that

But I really do see Dilva as a lock-in for serious minutes - and serious minutes against that Norwich team would 9 times out of 10 translate into FPL points

Sterling surely has to be the number 1 target, goal target and form, as well as a short rest.

Nostalgia, rest and price dictates that we pick D Silva next.

Pep’s comments about everyone playing indicate Mahrez may start, whereas Benardo and Foden may drop out after 90 mins.

KDB chasing assist record but played 90 mins, however we all know what happened last time he was benched against Norwich... but the relinquishing of pens and price comes to fore.

Jesus is the one I can’t call

        Continued...
Jesus I just can’t say - he played 90 mins, Sterling can play up front and he is their only centre forward who will play against Real in the champions league. So there are for and against points for him, which is enough uncertainty to avoid.

I think Sterling and D.Silva are fairly obvious

Not sure about KDB if he loses set pieces to D.Silva and pens to a Sterling ...

Mahrez probably better option ... likely to play more mins given the rest too

    Rash - 10

You’d probably expect so, but I think FPL will retain him as a forward in some vein attempt at putting people off from having both Rash and Martial. Don’t ask me why they would want that but I think they just like to be tricky like that fr the sake of it

        1. FPL Theorist
          • 4 Years

If they do that, then the actual CF should definitely be priced higher than the guy that usually plays on the wing. Perhaps Martial 10.5 and Rash 9.5.

I think that's a bit high for Rash if he stays as a forward. If he's a mid with 5 points per goal and 1 point per CS, it could be reasonable.

Reasonable? He'd be a complete steal at 10.0m as a mid.

    Martinez
    TAA Doherty Bardsely
    Mane KDB Son Bruno
    Vardy Rashford Greenwood

    Fodder Guedouzi Taylor Holgate

    1ft 0.5 ITB

Mini league is sewn up (yeah yeah humble brag) so I can have a free punt really but id like to break into the top 25k. I want Dilva and rid of Vardy but how to do it?
    A) Vardy > Jesus for free
    B) Vardy > Kane & Bruno > Dilva -4
    C) Guendozi > Dilva & Vardy to any sub 6.9 forward and either bench them or Greenwood
    D) Something else....

In a very tight battle for league. Is it worth swapping Salah and Foden for Sterling and DSilva/Mahrez? 4pt hit if so and rivals all have salah none have sterling. Any other ides on transfers gratefully received.

    Team currently is Martinez - patricio - Doherty - Gomez - VVD - maguire - Justin - Foden - Salah - Martial - Pulisic - KDB - Jiminez - Gayle - Greenwood

Just a couple of worries. Watford needing to desperately win and Arsenal now being in FA Cup means not much interest in getting involved too much for fear of injuries. Also Auba is pretty much out of GB

Newcastle had a back 3 of Krahft, Fernandez and Rose against Brighton. I imagine they'll struggle against Liverpool with only 1 fit recognised centre back. Also no Hayden or Longstaff to shield the defence in midfield.
