Scoutcast Episode 341 – Final Day Planning

What is it like to be within a whisker of winning Fantasy Premier League? Joe and Az find out when they are joined by special guest Alexander (@TooGoodFPL), who is in third place and just nine points from the summit.

This latest Scoutcast episode devotes itself to planning for Gameweek 38, as this longest of campaigns draws to a close.

Alexander reveals what its like to be so high up the rankings and the players he is considering for the end of the season as he bids for the FPL crown. With chess champion Magnus Carlsen hot on his heels in fourth place and just 30 points separating the top 10, there is plenty for him to ponder ahead of Sunday’s matches.

There’s alot on the line for all managers too, be it overall rank, mini-league glory or just the chance to own David Silva before he departs the Premier League.

While Joe and Alexander don’t have a Free Hit to play they can at least dream and run through the players, who those lucky enough to still have that chip, could bring in.

Az is one of those lucky ones. But with a wealth of choice from the ranks of Manchester City, Tottenham, Arsenal, Liverpool and more ,deploying this chip is no easy task.

Elsewhere, Joe laments on his poor post-lockdown Bench Boost strategy and there’s some Rough with the Smooth tales of woe and joy to look at.

On Monday July 27th at 8pm UK time the Scoutcast will return for one more time this campaign, to look at the highs and lows and lessons learned from this odd season. Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel to get notified of this and future live episodes.

22pts behind in ML so need to take a big risk.

Got 2 fts thinking Salah and Jimi for Mahrez (c) and Kane?

    Pope
    Taa, Doherty, Saiss
    Kdb, Salah, Son, Bruno
    Rash, Greenwood, Jimi

    Bench foden then injuries

    Any other suggestions much appreciated

If Mahrez gets the game-time against NOR, he can do damage. Might want to wait until 19:50 on Sun to 'hopefully' get early team news. Have a plan A & B. BOL!

22pts probably isnt that hard to gain, does your competitor have a similar team to you ? are they free hitting?

Correction: +22 pts is hard to gain on a good rival - look back at your scorecard for the season

Agreed - You can average points over gw's on good players with fixtures+anomalies. You don't get to pick it out of a hat in 1 gw. That's luck!

Bruno(c) with 1 point screwed a lot of people over, somehow I don't see that happening again in GW38 unless something weird happens at City

I was 30 odd ahead a cpl of weeks back but he had silva cpt on free hit in 36 and cpt sterling hattie against brighton.. basically not having sterling has killed me

Bruno(C) is a punt, like any captaincy option for 1 instance. I don't disagree with the choice and may C him myself, but it's sport, where there are many unknown wheels within wheels, even before, and when the game starts. I don't describe as skill anyone who picks a C for 1 gw.

Get it right 7 times out of 10 and on a rolling average and you have my attention 🙂

My point was that Bruno was a popular captain pick in GW37 and his failure opened the door for a lot of chasers, this was the reason I was able to make up 30+ points in one GW. In GW38 the overwhelming consensus will be on a City (c) and I don't see that failing for most leaders, hence less opportunity to claw back a huge deficit.

Good rout, but not sure I agree if it happens, it will therefore happen again.

My C for chasers would be Antonio - yours?

His team has 9 players the same only differences are sterling and lamptetmy for my son and saiss.

No free hit he has 2 transfers like me.... i think he may bring in kane/auba but im not sure..

I have to do something have to hope for massive luck with mahrez and somehow sterling stays quiet?

Thanks to those who gave captaincy advice earlier. These would be probable team options (non FH so needs hit in either case which happy yo take as upside greater)- which do you prefer? If Mahrez non starter then becomes D Silva

A Mane (or Mahrez) capain team

    Martinez
    TAA Aurier Maguire
Sterling KDB Mahrez Mané (c) Martial
    Ings Wood

    Pope Nketiah Williams Fernández

B Kane (or Mahrez} captain team-

    Martinez
    TAA Aurier Tierney/Alderweireld
    Sterling KDB Mahrez Martial Antonio
    Wood Kane (c)

    Pope Nketiah Maguire Fernandez

If a leak reveals that both D Silva and Jesus start, which would you go for?

    (a) D Silva for Martial/Fernandes
    (b) Jesus for Jimenez

    De Gea
    TAA - Saiss - Bardsley
    Sterling (c) - De Bruyne - Martial - Fernandes
    Ings - Jimenez - DCL

Need advice since last week came with a bang and made me push rivals away by 37 and 43 points in ML's. However they have FH and will be loading up.

    Current team is:
TAA / Aurier AWB or Doherty
    KDB / Sterling (C) / Dilva / Martial / Pulisic
    Kane / Greenwood or Nketiah

    1 FT and 1.5 itb.
    What should I do?
    A. Get Salah? Only way is -4 and getting rid of Trent, not worth It right?
    B. Doherty -> Robbo or someone else?
    C. Pulisic -> Antonio / Moura / X

I think he might be a sleeper hit. If Kane drops deep against the Palace block and Son can attack Ward, he's the better option. Can see it happening. Not that many going for him probably because Kane has the better recent form + abundant options in midfield

    Survival of the Fittest

I keep seeing a lot of Free Hit squads opting for players from Arsenal, Everton and West Ham. However, all three of those sides have nothing to play for, with their opponents Watford, Bournemouth and Aston Villa fighting for their lives.

On a Free Hit, I’d personally consider going with Harry Kane over Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. He’s in form and performing well for shots and big chances.

Michail Antonio is a man in form, with six goals in his last four games. Should we be looking to Jack Grealish as a differential instead? He will be playing for a move this summer and keeping the Villains up would be a huge feat.

All of the sides in the race for survival will have to go all out to score goals and get the result, so there could be big gaps for their relative opposition. Personally, I’ll be avoiding players facing a side still battling.

Holly, I don't quite follow which tactics you're suggesting.

You mention the upsides of "Battling" clubs, the downsides of clubs like Arsenal, West Ham & Everton, but then in your last paragraph allude to the possibility of the "battling" clubs having to play open games and giving Arsenal, West Ham & Everton big gaps, but immediately kibosh the idea.

It must be the Stellas I've just partaken of !!!

Not confusing - just not logical

Villa have found resilience and passion - no easy beat. West Ham have a bit of form but I see 1-1

Arsenal could really punish a Watford side looking for a result

Everton however have not looked convincing and i fancy Bournemouth to keep them busy at the other end

So you don't want Arsenal but want Kane who also has nothing to play for. Contradictory argument..

        • 13 Years

That wasn't the point, the point was to avoid teams playing against other teams that still have something to play for. So Auba faces Watford who have survival to play for, Kane plays Palace who were the first team to hit the beach back in GW31+.

I think it's easy to over-analyse the fixtures and motivation for teams. Sure, Watford, Villa and Bournemouth have something to play for, but it doesn't suddenly make them great teams. They've been trying to get out of the relegation zone since the restart and they are still there for a reason. Every team will have some motivation - you could argue for example that Palace will be desperately trying to avoid another defeat, or that Arsenal will want to go into FA cup final in best form possible, or Southampton will want to go all out to give Ings best chance to win Golden Boot. Reality is that the last GW is so unpredictable. Some players might be playing for their chance to stay at the club, some might naturally want to give 110% in every game, some squad players will be laying down a marker to secure a place in their team for next season, etc.

A fixture vs. the bottom clubs could be viewed as a negative or positive thing. Take Auba as an example. Watford being up for the match might either (a) Make them harder to score against or (b) Leave them more open as they push to score goals. If you are considering fixtures, I think it's important to look at all aspects and possibilities of the fixture. i.e. I don't think it's wise to avoid Arsenal, Everton or West Ham assets purely because of point (a) without considering (b) might happen also.

Two fixtures do stand out I think for me. City-Norwich for obvious reasons. Also Liverpool-Newcastle. Newcastle have looked poor for the last few weeks and are injury ravaged. But I can see why some people can see fixtures in different ways.

I think at the end of the day, as always, you have to try to make the best decisions for you and based on what you feel will play out each GW.

Excellent comment. I would just add that if your chasing, as I am, you're not likely to make up much ground without taking a risk and bringing in or keeping some of the differentials that all the free-hitters are abandoning.

This is true. I'm looking at Trossard as a possible differential. Obviously risky but if he scores it's like a double win as he'll wipe the Burnley CS in the process. Hard to drop one of Dilva, Sterling, KdB, Salah, Martial for him though. So many midfield options.

I would second that on Newcastle - barely have a defence and if they employ tactics like against man city (ie invite pressure) it's really is liverpool's for the rout if they're not hungover, which at least they'll have a couple of that aren't

Picking players form those 3 teams is a gamble, the gamble is that if one of those 3 teams fighting in relegation battle, like say, Watford or Villa score then having Everton players could be good. This is impossible to know before the game starts, hence why you have to gamble on circumstances not known. Apart from Martinez in goal i´ve decided to avoid those games for exactly the reason i mentioned. But we all know some or other will get an unlikely haul, problem it could be anyone, it could be Stanislas banging in 2 goals in the first 15 minutes, it could be DCL scoring a hattrick, it could be Pepe with a hattie.

He got the three hottest City attackers for last game of the season. See early team news if Jesus starts, otherwise you may need to reconsider. To answer your question, it's hard, although I like his team a little more this gw.

    Salah or Auba ??

Irrespective of others in my team. Who will score more in your opinion ??

Auba looks prime for a huge haul to me. Salah away form playing with my mind too.

I have question marks about both... Arsenal will have one eye on the FA Cup final and Auba's minutes might be managed to that end (also would he play as intensely as he would if it was the last game of his season?).

Similarly, we know how Liverpool reacted last time they had a big party... Also Newcastle aren't playing for anything either, so there's nothing stopping Klopp from sitting a few of his big guns.

You can see why I'm undecided!

Mané, and Salah, don’t drink but their supply line from Robbo and TAA do. It’s tricky.

I see it this way. If both are going to be reckless. Spreading risk with Auba makes sense in my case. Robbo Taa should help me getting some of Pool points.

Watford were so poor vs City & my rival has Auba too (he has salah too 😛 )

That is why I'm undecided. Leaning towards Auba though surely. 6 days rest before fa cup final so can see him getting 70 minutes.

I think Auba might not get 90 mins with an eye on the FA Cup final for Arteta. Salah is in bad form but he's 4 away from the golden boot and if he gets on early, it could be a very long evening for Newcastle. When in doubt, take the safer pick. Thats Salah.

I think i would like to have salah

but this week is awful to choose among the big hitters

my hope is that Salah plays for Liverpool, last game of season vs a team that might just go out to play for fun with a lot of injuries.

Arsenal won´t go anywhere and has their head in fa cup final, and if results are not going very badly very soon Watford will probably want to keep it tight for a while. all the ifs and buts in the world, just have to go for what you think is most likely to happen i guess

What would be the best move here guys? Really struggling and need to catch 20 pts (ML leader's key differentials are Salah and Auba)
    1) Vardy Martial/Bruno Doherty -> Ings Sterling Pieters for -4
    2) Vardy Willian Doherty -> Wood Sterling Pieters for -4
    3) Vardy Willian Bruno -> Rodriguez, Salah, Dilva for -4
    4) Vardy Bruno -> Kane/Auba Dilva
    5) Vardy Willian-> Connolly Sterling and play Greenwood

    McCarthy
    TAA - Doherty - Baldock
    KdB - Mahrez - Fernandes - Martial - Willian
    Jimenez - Vardy

might depend on how their records etc is going. Sterling aiming for 20+ goals as a winger and maybe golden boot depending on the outcome of the game and KDB will want 1-2 assist to equal/break the assist record of 20 assists a season
