Klopp decimates Fantasy teams in mass rotation of Liverpool assets

WRITTEN BY DAVID MUNDAY AND NEALE RIGG

Jurgen Klopp has gone from hero to zero for Fantasy Premier League managers in the final Gameweek of 2019/20.

The Liverpool manager has ripped up his usual team-sheet for the trip to Newcastle, consigning Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, Roberto Firmino and Trent Alexander-Arnold to the bench.

Andrew Robertson and Virgil van Dijk are the only two key Fantasy assets to keep their place in the side, which features Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi as the front-three.

After all the talk over potential rotation and midweek jollies to Saint-Tropez, Pep Guardiola has made only one change from the Manchester City side that beat Watford 4-0 on Tuesday.

David Silva returns to the team as expected, with Bernardo Silva making way.

Phil Foden, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling make up the three-man City attack, so that again means no place in the side for Riyad Mahrez.

Kevin De Bruyne also keeps his place.

Daniel Farke’s four changes are all enforced, with Emiliano Buendia and Josip Drmic suspended and Timm Klose and Alex Tettey injured.

Teemu Pukki, Marco Stiepermann, Lukas Rupp and Christoph Zimmermann all return.

Chelsea have made two changes, with Christian Pulisic in for the injured Willian in attack.

Frank Lampard has stuck with a wing-back system but has recalled Willy Caballero between the posts, with the out-of-sorts Kepa Arrizabalaga making way.

Adama Traore, Joao Moutinho and Daniel Podence drop out for Wolves, with Romain Saiss, Diogo Jota and Pedro Neto promoted to the starting XI.

Raul Jimenez makes his 37th league start of the season.

There is just the one change to the Manchester United side from Gameweek 37+, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka replacing Timothy Fosu-Mensah at right-back.

Brendan Rodgers has seemingly stuck with three centre-halves but has made three alterations nonetheless, with Hamza Choudhury, Kelechi Iheanacho and Marc Albrighton replacing Ayoze Perez, Harvey Barnes and Ryan Bennett.

Mikel Arteta perhaps has one eye on the FA Cup final as he has made five changes to Arsenal’s starting XI for the visit of Watford.

Sead Kolasinac, Bukayo Saka, Lucas Torreira, Cedric Soares and Eddie Nketiah drop out, with Kieran Tierney, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Nicolas Pepe, Joe Willock and Granit Xhaka recalled.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang starts in attack, as does Alexandre Lacazette.

The Hornets have themselves made two changes, with Danny Welbeck and Adam Masina in for the benched Tom Cleverley and Adrian Mariappa.

All appears as it should be for Spurs, who name Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura and Giovani Lo Celso as their front-four attacking players.

Those still invested in Serge Aurier can also be happy as the right-back holds his place in the side.

Crystal Palace are as depleted as expected, with Tyrick Mitchell starting at left-back and still no Luka Milivojevic in the starting line-up.

Michail Antonio owners will be pleased to see the West Ham midfielder holding down the centre-forward position for Aston Villa’s trip to the London Stadium.

Mark Noble is still in the number 10 role, supported by Declan Rice and the box-to-box option of Tomas Soucek behind him.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is the man to miss out for Everton, replaced in the front-line by Moise Kean, who plays alongside Richarlison.

Crucially, Jarrad Branthwaite gets a final start of the season in defence at just £4.0m.

John Lundstram may be out there in some Fantasy squads still as today he bids farewell to the budget defender category for good.

He starts in central midfield for Sheffield United today, alongside Sander Berge and John Fleck.

The Blades face a Southampton side fronted by Danny Ings, who has his sights on troubling Vardy for the Golden Boot.

Amid all the carnage elsewhere, there is familiarly reassuring news from Turf Moor as Sean Dyche sticks with the same starting XI that made the cut in the 2-0 win over Norwich.

Leandro Trossard, Aaron Mooy and Pascal Gross all drop out of the Brighton midfield, meanwhile, with Alexis MacAllister, Solly March and Aaron Connolly handed recalls.

Slipped to 30k after a disappointing gameweek of close call decisions going wrong - mainly this week keeping Vardy over a hit for Auba, and also removing Bruno for a sentimental DSilva(c) when I had KDB (vc)....

But we live and learn. 30k is by no means awful after a season of ups and downs, including being almost 2m OR 10 weeks in.

Thanks to all who gave advice over this long season. Will be nice having a bit of a break from football, take care all. x

Alright guys, signing off for the season. Finishing on a red arrow is a shame but it is what it is. Been good fun this year despite the ups and downs but that's the rollercoaster of FPL I guess. Thanks to all who have helped me out, especially to the people who run this site and create content including the videos and articles. I like to think I've helped some people on here as well, hopefully will be back next season with better advice than picking Jesus over KDB. See you all in a month.

I went for Jesus as 3rd City instead despite spending all week telling people not to. The reason for it was because team leaks convinced me I needed to prioritise removing Jimenez over Bruno because I fancied a Chelsea win - wasn't wrong. Unfortunately Jesus is still a donkey and KDB is class. Not even bitter, he's still coming in next month. Enjoy your summer too mate and congrats on a great rank

Yeah, being apprehensive about City players not getting 60 minutes is exactly what I had in mind when making my above comment, but that only happened to KDB 3 times all season.

Hulk incoming? I've been very trigger happy this season, would like to take less hits next time. I'm hoping to trial a transfer strategy of always giving new transfers in 4 GWs before getting rid, unless they get injured or suspended. In theory I should be able to catch a lot more hauls this way, might miss some bandwagons but hoping for a net positive.

A couple rung very clear this week to sum up the season, as others have mentioned:
      1) trust the gut - easy to get caught up in a sheep mentality and just relying on what others tell you, I’ve been all too guilty of that and regretted it massively
      2) this week being a chief example with David Silva in for Bruno and captained over KDB, don’t let sentimentality have any place in FPL! Granted dSilva was unlucky not to return today, but that was a mean points swing
      3) don’t be afraid to take gambles that others think won’t pay off - upon hearing Trent may have been benched, I was so close to losing him for Tierney and using the funds to bring Auba in for Vardy - another massive points swing!

Not necessarily new lessons (maybe bar #4) - but reassuring to see he same principles keep reading their head to me after almost every season - these are tried and tested, and over time - they really do work

      1. Watch the games, not the stats
      2. Every point counts - Treat your team like an investment portfolio - not so much in the old cliche of buy low sell high (which can be applicable at times) but much moreso in seeking at all times to minimise transaction costs (hits)
      3. Give your players time (e.g. Pope) but not too much time (e.g. Pulisic first time around)
      4. Give serious considerstion to a Perma cap for next season (482 captain points this season - and that was only salvaged by + 57 points for Sterling cap for his hattrick last week and Sterling Triple Cap today - KDB or Bruno perma next season)
      5. Don’t make early transfers or chase TV - there is ALWAYS another option if you get priced out (ALWAYS!!!)
      6. Don’t be stubborn - e.g. certain folk refusing to get Vardy, or refusing to believe Salah’s away hoodoo with Mane etc

      1. el polako
        • 6 Years

Perma cap and no early transfers at all take away 50% of fun playing this game for me.
I know there are different types of managers out there with different goals but perma cap and risk free transfers sound really boring - that's not to be say uneffective.

I’m at a stage now where I’m willing to try something new - in a way perma cap should be *less* boring after 13 seasons doing the opposite?

But it’ll be very hard to stick to, for sure, I’m only really considering it after such a bad year of captaincy picks

I know what you're saying, captaincy fails are real blow and there was a time when I was advocating that game without double captain points would be better.
Not knocking your idea and wish you best of luck with it just saying that for me getting up on Saturday morning and sitting dow with cup of coffee whilst thinking throu & making final decisions is best part of the game.

      Great topic. For me:

      1) only take a hit when you really need to (injury, etc) or to make a mini-wildcard. Most of my hits over the past 3 seasons have not had a positive return

      2) xG and xGI are powerful tools. Look at them.

      3) Don’t talk myself into short terms moves. (I sold TAA and Jimmy for Digne and Ings in 36. It cost me big in 37).

      4) Just because you have a transfer doesn’t mean you have to use it. I sold Pope for Ryan right before Pope went on the huge run.

      5) Hold on to your chips until you see an opportunity (I made up most all of my ground using FH and BB).

I finished 8.3k. But for 3&4, I would have been close to 1k.

Watch less matches. The eye test is deceiving. The best indicator of future points is the recent points. Kneejerk in form players earlier. Stop faffing about with City players. Only care about the game to a degree that makes it enjoyable to play.

Ended up with an OR rank of 282 after taking plenty of hits in the ending gws, etc -12, -8 and -4 in just the last 3... left with a feeling that hits can be for better and for worse though very rewarding and it makes it more fun 😉 Like to think I would have been all up in the top if I had managed to pick the captain right steadily over the season... so lets focus on that next season 😉

Don't overthink. Trust your instinct. Even if they don't work out, you won't have anyone to blame.

Also, FPL is very dynamic, some seasons being dullard works some season, you have to go for the maverick picks or get left out.

      1) Defenders are worth as much as attackers and typically more vfm. Get attacking defenders from teams that keep CS and have decent fixtures coming up (TAA, Doherty, Chilwell, Digne, Lundstram etc)

      2) Select 2 big hitters for captaincy and rest of the squad on vfm basis.

      3) Don’t be shy of hits at the beginning of the season when there is more time to payoff, avoid them toward the end.

      4) GKs get you decent points even in hard fixtures ... choose a mid price one and stick to it (Ederson is 10th highest scoring keeper despite winning the golden glove).

      5) Try not to let recent results influence you too much ( I would’ve had sterling(c) in GW37+ but changed to Bruno after being stung by sterling benching in GW36+).

      6) Save a FT where possible ... 2FTs are gold

      7) Chase team value in the beginning of the season but wait as much as possible for the transfers in the latter half of the season.

      8) Form and fixtures both matter equally. Try to in form players where fixtures are decent rather than just focusing on fixtures... fixtures turn and TV build up matters.

Big mistake this season was not having the guts to give KDB the armband - was surprised to find I didn’t captain him once. Huge oversight on my part.

The downside of owning a player that is highly owned is not climbing the ranks when he hauls. Simply owning him is not enough - to get any real benefit you have to captain him.

A cheap 3rd striker for 3rd place on the bench (i.e. sub 5m, allowing 3rd and 4th Defenders to be much improved, and allowing transfers to focus on the big hitters / inevitable midfield reshuffle.
Point per £M again Def > Strikers

This could though be because the lockdown break caused a plethora of cheap attacking options to become available from the restart. :/

Go back to playing my own game. Since I disengaged from FFS and FPL quite a bit this season, I trusted the opinions of a few pages on FFS too readily in an attempt to make decisions efficiently, rather than deliberate for hours. However, I'm going to try and make my decisions first, and check them against news and alternative views afterwards, which means setting a bit more time aside to make decisions, if I can find it. No mo FOMO! I just hope I don't find a new job too quickly!

Go back to a few of my basic principles. Avoid tame options in search of value in the mid-price and upwards. Trust and prioritise the higher-scoring and bigger teams. Do what it takes to get my favourite players in, according to my assessment of their value, even if it makes the team "structure" or strategy seem weird or unorthodox. Aim for longevity at the start of the season, instead of chasing bandwagons, so you can save transfers for bigger points swings and WC later. Have fun or quit.

Trent definitely going to be minimum 7.5 next season. KDB 12.0.

My focus will be on midfield and the defence to the forwards, in that order. Points in midfield without a doubt!

Putting your team together for next season is going to be tricky. Pick wisely to try fit in 3 big hitters. Fitting 4 is going to be a big push and will probably mess with your structure.

So this season I decided not to have 3 Arsenal players in my team every week (my rank history sucks cause of this, was a complete casual) and play sensibly, whilst also making ballsy captain choices. Was 700 in the world in GW6, fell back down to 280k at Xmas and clawed it back to finishing 12k (6 points off top 10k ugh) but never mind, and also won my ML. The Mane TC injury in the DGW will always burn though, lol.

A rollercoaster season. See you all in a month 🙂

Dropped from 500 to 6k OR since startup. I think that's fair with using most of the chips up. 8th top 10k finish. Gets tougher every year I think. We'll done everyone on here. It's been a ride.

Thanks to everyone over here for all the advice they have given me over the season.

It's been a tough and challenging season for me. Managed to get my worst ever rank after finishing in the Top 10k 3 years in a row. Fortunately the new season isn't far away and I'll come back stronger.

    See you soon guys! 😀

    To all:

I know I can moan a fair bit during matchdays - today was a particularly tough day for a number of reasons. Just generally (so it obviously leaks into FPL) I am a very competitive person, and also an over thinker which doesn’t help when it comes to FPL moves either.

I appreciate most ( 😉 ) of you for all your wisdom, and I hope on occasion I’ve provided you with some useful advice too (probably not during games of course, I’ll work on that lol). All the best

Yep, I don't care about ITK people having an advantage but it's annoying to only get some lineups leaked but not others. I don't want to feel compelled to disproportionately target early games next season (e.g. if I can't decide on Salah or KDB for the captaincy, but only one lineup has been leaked, then I'll just captain the one who's already confirmed to be starting).

There are some leagues with prizes (both cash and non-cash) that are free to enter - look for them on Twitter after the game opens. I'm not sure how many will actually pay out without a contract in place though.
