Aleksandar Antonov wins 2019/20 Fantasy Premier League crown

A fantastic Gameweek 38+ for Aleksandar Antonov was enough for the Bulgarian to leap from third to first in the overall Fantasy Premier League standings and clinch the 2019/20 crown.

Aleksandar scored a whopping 93 points without the aid of a chip, with his successful captaincy of Kevin De Bruyne (£10.6m) proving key.

Double-digit hauls for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m) and Bruno Fernandes (£9.0m) also boosted his score, with almost 70% of his Gameweek 38+ total coming from those three aforementioned players.

The two managers who had been immediately above our new champion, Joshua Bull and erstwhile leader Chris McGowan, both used chips in Gameweek 38+ but were edged out on the final day.

Joshua used his second Wildcard and racked up 68 points, overtaking Chris but finishing 18 points short of Aleksandar.

Our runner-up captained Harry Kane (£11.0m) on the concluding afternoon of football but even if he had handed the armband to De Bruyne, would still have finished in second spot.

Above: Aleksandar’s winning team

Chris used his Triple Captain chip on Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), meanwhile, with the Egyptian only registering a ‘one-pointer’ after coming off the bench in the second half on Tyneside.

Again, though, handing the armband to his vice-captain, Raheem Sterling (£12.0m), wouldn’t have stopped Aleksandar from winning.

Chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen had a Gameweek 38+ to forget after a memorable season, captaining Salah after taking a hit to bring the Liverpool winger in.

Magnus’s Gameweek score of 40 saw him drop from fourth to 11th in the overall standings.

Fantasy Football Scout Leagues

Aleksandar and Chris finished as first and second in our Fantasy Football Scout league, with Bill Wilkins claiming the bronze medal after a successful Free Hit on the final day.

Our Members League was won by Nathan Woollaston, who finished three points clear of regular contributor Lateriser.

Tom Russell claimed the third podium spot in that league.

Ismail Hossan Rasel was the victor in our post-restart mini-league, with TopMarx coming out on top amongst the Mods and Cons.

Congratulations to all of the above managers on their hugely successful seasons.

We’ll have more reaction to come on these success stories in the next few days and weeks.

Playing for 6 years and never really had a scientific strategy. Making sure I have one for next season, starting with making more use of xG and xA. Any other advice?

My order of wants to bring in a player is:

      1. Eye test
      2. Oop players
      3. Penalty takers
      4. Players with a strong history over new/emerging assets
      5. Stats that back up the player you are targetting

A few more things to think about:
          • how good a team the player plays in
          • the significance of their role in that team (ie Talisman)
          • how nailed on they are
          • whether or not they are on set pieces.

you've just got to get the right players at the right time, the pool of successful players we have to choose from isn't actually that big - a lot of it is luck, but targeting teams that can't defend is a good starting point - and don't neglect your own defence/keeper (I'm massively guilty of this). Getting a nice start also helps massively, playing catch up in MLs can cause problems with OR seeking

Look at fixtures over form. Or in other words, "fixtures makes form!" Spot teams who are walkovers, like Norwich this year.

Would just be careful with xG and xA, remember they’re values for the average player. So someone like Aguero or Kane will consistently outperform xG, don’t be fooled into thinking they’ll ‘regress’.

Same thing the other way with below prem average players.

I think shots on target from inside the box combined with touches in the opposition penalty area makes an extremely good stat. High in both shows the potential for goals.

    5. FPL Theorist
      • 4 Years
      3 years, 8 months ago

At the same time, you have to know the limitations of xG and xA. Some players have a history of consistently outperforming their xG over many years, in which case you should expect them to keep doing so in the future. For example, Bruno Fernandes had a history of outperforming his xG when he was in Portugal, because he's really good at scoring long-range goals.

Also, xA doesn't count fantasy assists, so for example Pulisic looked statistically worse than Willian for a while because Pulisic wasn't getting any xA for winning pens and dangerous free kicks that Willian took.

Finally, xG doesn't take into account goalkeeper quality, so for example Chelsea's xG conceded has generally looked not that bad this season, but it didn't factor in how bad Kepa was.

Good luck picking a team next season

    In all probability:

    - TAA 8m+
    - KDB, Salah, Mane, Sterling 12m+
    - Bruno, Son 10m+
    - Mahrez, Pulisic, Ziyech (+pending Havertz) close to premium price
    - Aguero, Auba, Kane, Vardy 11m+
    - Martial, Jimenez, Ings, Werner 9m+

Value picks always emerge and become template ... someone who hadn’t performed last season and picked up form this year

Tbh I remember this time last year we had a similar feeling

How will we afford Salah, Sterling, Auba, Kane, Aguero, Wilson, Siggy, Fraser..... most of them fell out of favour soon ...

I agree top4 will be more closely contested next season though

Wilson, Siggy and Fraser were all in my GW1 team. Could not have been more wrong there. But there was a lack of United and Chelsea appeal at the time (or the fact they were unknown quantities). Gonna be interesting for sure. Depending on how fixtures fall, could be a lot of variety.

Not a fan in general but a blanket statement on hits (either way) isn't the way to go.

Best thing to do is to do it with 2FT's, lets you have a major reshuffle for just -4. Problem tends to be that people who like hits are the same people who don't save transfers.

Took 5 and finished 7.7k. At least 1 that I can remember cost me points on top of the hit.

Hits for aggressive plays seem better than hits for plugging holes that are mostly 2 pointers anyway.

I went hit free and got my best finish (although it still wasn’t great by most people’s standards on here).
The big benefit for me was the way it forced me to plan my team for longer periods and target my wildcards at fixture swings.

I think one of the biggest factors this season was whether or not you had held the second wildcard until post restart. The opportunity to essentially play both bench boost and a 'wildcard' in 30+, and then change it all up again is the most powerful chip use we will ever see.

I wasn't in this situation unfortunately and have some regrets about how I played the back end of the season: played free hit in 30+ to cover the double because I thought I was happy with my squad at the time. Fair play to those who were avle to do this though.

All in all it's been a challenging season but good to learn from new situations.

Cheers to all on here for your insight and general banter. I hope you enjoy the break and see you next season

Ideally, this “restart” of the season is a one-off situation we never have to endure again.

I'm not sure there really was a good way to play it if you didn't have WC -- if you had acted differently, you still could have had lots of trouble. I played Bench Boost in 30+, made a big gain that week, but then had too much money tied up on my bench and benched 129 points in the remaining 8 gameweeks. I played my Blades defenders when they didn't keep CS, and benched them when they did (plus 2 Egan goals).

Annual public service announcement to suggest taking a screen shot of your final weekly rankings for this season before they disappear. Handy tool for comparing performance, TV, and chip usage from season to season.

Was just looking at my OR scores in the past seasons on FPL - I started playing FPL in the 2007/2008 season - was this the first season does anyone know?

No it wasn’t, it’s been going on a lot lot longer than that.

My account goes back to 2006/2007, although I definitely started in 2003/2004, so not sure what's going on there!

Free hit cost me 25 points, 80k overall and a few mini leagues.

    Livid.

I haven’t done that to myself but losing KDB and VVD not great. Only 4 of my FH team blanked so not a huge failure but still frustrating to take a rank drop on a chip

Which EPL teams will be signing the likes of Ake, Sarr and Krul?

These are 3 very capable players and would shine in better teams.

      None.

Liverpool rumoured to go for Sarr. Would make sense - he's Mane's protege.

Who’s the first player in your FPL squad next season regardless of price. (Assume 100% fitness)?

      KdB or TAA

Fernandes. Only week I had him was one of two blanks since restart. Almost single handily dropped me from 10k to 70k slowly over a number of weeks. Despite having martial assisting his pens! That and moving out KDB today of course. He’ll be second name after if fit

KDB - 5.58 points per game since August 2015.

KDB or Bruno I think, although if crammed season maintains post-lockdown frequency of fixtures, KDB going to get occasional rest and Bruno will get knackered!

It obviously won’t be the same frequency!

Probably two 4.5 keepers, maybe Pope if he’s 5.

      That’s just how I roll.

What a final day. Won ML, and 31k overall rank which I’m happy with. Hanging up my boots after this season. There’s been a lot of talk over the last year on the impact FPL can have on you, and I spend waaay to much time on it! Zombie team for me next year which should still be enough to win my family league. Keep up the good work FFS. Still the best podcast out there in my view (enjoy Joe’s commentary in particular). I’ll probably be back on here in a few months when I come out of retirement

I know the feeling. I now only play the global league and head to head leagues. I find it far more enjoyable.

Same here my mini leagues a joke though so just no point checking it much. OR is where it’s at but it’s getting tougher. Almost too tough to enjoy last few weeks since restart

Very happy with finishing at 2244th place! My best ever season, although I’ve probably chose wrong captain in 30 of 38 GWs. Was fighting for top 1k but lack of antonio and sterling in their big GW-hauls sent me further down the ranks. Also taken too many hits! Next season will be exciting.

Congrats that's brilliant! 8994 for me and captains have def been my issue this season, Mane 1pt TC being the poster boy and Dilva rubbing capping it off today. Partial to a fun hit tho!

Salah and Mane's price lower next season?
    Say 11.5?
