Aleksandar Antonov wins 2019/20 Fantasy Premier League crown

A fantastic Gameweek 38+ for Aleksandar Antonov was enough for the Bulgarian to leap from third to first in the overall Fantasy Premier League standings and clinch the 2019/20 crown.

Aleksandar scored a whopping 93 points without the aid of a chip, with his successful captaincy of Kevin De Bruyne (£10.6m) proving key.

Double-digit hauls for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m) and Bruno Fernandes (£9.0m) also boosted his score, with almost 70% of his Gameweek 38+ total coming from those three aforementioned players.

The two managers who had been immediately above our new champion, Joshua Bull and erstwhile leader Chris McGowan, both used chips in Gameweek 38+ but were edged out on the final day.

Joshua used his second Wildcard and racked up 68 points, overtaking Chris but finishing 18 points short of Aleksandar.

Our runner-up captained Harry Kane (£11.0m) on the concluding afternoon of football but even if he had handed the armband to De Bruyne, would still have finished in second spot.

Above: Aleksandar’s winning team

Chris used his Triple Captain chip on Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), meanwhile, with the Egyptian only registering a ‘one-pointer’ after coming off the bench in the second half on Tyneside.

Again, though, handing the armband to his vice-captain, Raheem Sterling (£12.0m), wouldn’t have stopped Aleksandar from winning.

Chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen had a Gameweek 38+ to forget after a memorable season, captaining Salah after taking a hit to bring the Liverpool winger in.

Magnus’s Gameweek score of 40 saw him drop from fourth to 11th in the overall standings.

Fantasy Football Scout Leagues

Aleksandar and Chris finished as first and second in our Fantasy Football Scout league, with Bill Wilkins claiming the bronze medal after a successful Free Hit on the final day.

Our Members League was won by Nathan Woollaston, who finished three points clear of regular contributor Lateriser.

Tom Russell claimed the third podium spot in that league.

Ismail Hossan Rasel was the victor in our post-restart mini-league, with TopMarx coming out on top amongst the Mods and Cons.

Congratulations to all of the above managers on their hugely successful seasons.

We’ll have more reaction to come on these success stories in the next few days and weeks.

Last season finished in the top 100, this season I just about managed to scrape into the top 200k. As much as I like to think last year was skill and this year I got unlucky, reality is probably the other way around!

Pretty happy though as I got back to 37k from 4.2m (!) - managed to forget about the start of FPL and had a complete placeholder team at the start as a result.

Way down (141k) and actually a reality check after finishing inside Top 10k for 3 consecutive years. But I've learnt a lot going into next season and a bad season was always due after so much luck past 3 seasons hopefully it's out of the way now.

Well done! I find this kind of thing really interesting. On the face of it, all the evidence was that Silva was a better bet than Bruno for the last week. Form, fixtures, the romantic last PL game narrative, Bruno looking tired in recent games, but it turned out to be the wrong decision. How should we as managers judge a decision like that? Was it still the right thing to do even though it didn't pay off?

My take and one which helps me to make sense of it all, is that it's very difficult to have a decision pay off in 1 gw. I class this as a punt, which can go either way, but on FH you have to take the gamble that the majority of your decisions will bare fruit. The hit-rate factor, if you will

dang, that must smart a bit. I did a similar thing, lost a 17 point lead in the final GW. He captained KDB, I went with Sterling. I sold Bruno for Son, he kept Bruno. I wouldn’t say I blew it, he made the better plays.

4 at the back will be big next year, potentially 4-5-1. Too many good attacking options to fit in and rather a 4.5 defender than midfielder or striker. Probably say the same every year and end up back at 3-4-3.

This time last year I was sold on big at the back following season value.

Can see 4 working if and when a new Lund Awb emerges. But for me there’ll be real interest around the 8-9.5 mark up top. Following form and fixtures could work with these who are likely easy enough swaps

      Ings
      Martial
      Rashford
      Greenwood
      Jim
      Werner
      Antonio etc

I am betting there will be position changes next season. All the top mids with very few exceptions are actually forwards. KDB and Bruno who are mids should be high cost. Moving Mane Salah Sterling Martial etc to forwards will improve the game. Also, wing backs should really go to midfield.

So interesting how the straegies change on here over the years. The rally cry used to be "cheap at the back", then "Power Forwards" and now it is 5 MF. Pricing is obviously the driving force, but so are the changing tactics on the field ( incraesed use of wing backs). It keeps the game fun and fresh!

I think there will be some changes in that regard alright.

How will Lampard keep everyone happy? Willian, Pulisic, Mount, RLC, CHO, Abraham, Giroud, Werner, Ziyech and Havertz... 10 players fighting for 4 positions. Going to be some very unhappy players there.

He's doing the right thing. Liverpool approach under Klopp. First get the attack really going and then once you consistently score 2+ goals every game, bolster the defence. Much easier than the Mourinho approach of shoring up the defense first.

The difference is Klopp bought 3 players and he has only 5 real choices up top. Lampard will have 10. Far too top heavy. The big heads will start moaning.

It's the ManC model - must have 2 top-notch players for each of the attacking roles if you're going to remain competitive in Pl and CL. Makes perfect sense. Does seem like defense is still a bit weak and will be interesting to see if Kepa is kept.

Just realised that I have given away 140 points in transfer costs - mainly out of boredom and being radical!!!

I'm going to write down some rules for next season:
          - Hits are only for injuries
          - Only look at the long term; you can never know what's going to happen in any one gameweek
          - Don't waste your chips!

And I'm going to have a second team to mess around with - or do the Sky game for more tinkering options!

All my transfers recently were utter garbage. Like 4 weeks ago o took a -12. Removed Son and Jimi, both scored that week and my transfer in didnt.
For 38 I took a -8 which involved KDB>Sterling, that went terribly as well.
I got away with the -12, but the final -8 was pretty bad.

I took a -8 for the last week as well. Bruno, Vardy, Rashford -> Sterling, Nketiah, Kane. Not a complete disaster, but the 8 points cost me a fair bit of rank in the end. Didn't have all that much to play for by then, though!

Bittersweet end to the season for me. Won 2 cash mini leagues for £700 but dropped outside the top 100k by covering opponents players (i.e. KDB to Sterling (C) yesterday).

I tend to aim for the highest possible OR every year. If I play well I place high in the ML's. I'm not THAT good of a player, but a couple of years ago I did have a lot of luck and placed 718 overall. But I still didn't win my ML... 😀 A friend placed 225 overall...

Yeah that’s normally my tactic to aim for the highest possible OR and then ML’s look after themselves. I found out the guy 2nd had TC’d Sterling and I didn’t have him in my team so transferred him in for KDB. First time I’ve been outside the top 100k in 6 seasons but guess I was lucky this time that everyone in my leagues did worse!

Never ceases to amuse me, when fans of a team that's just been relegated to the Championship talk about coming straight back up as Champions.

It rarely ever happens and often the team that goes down ends up in another relegation battle the following season.

The Championship is no respecter of anyone, its a damn hard league to get out of.

The change in mentality is tricky too. It's well documented in the transition from the Championship to the Premier League - a lot of teams find it hard to adjust to losing most of the time when they were winning most of the time.

The opposite is also true for relegated teams - you go a full season of being the whipping boys, it's not that easy to all of a sudden be winners, even if the opposition is in theory less hard.

      1. Nickemon
        • 14 Years

        And the squads too.

Look at Bournemouth for instance. How many of Callum, King, Brooks, Aké, Lewis Cook, etc, will stay? Remove them from the squad and you're a typical Championship squad, imo, with players like Steve Cook, Francis, Surman, etc, etc.
Nothing wrong with them, obviously, but they lack the quality to be a top team next year.

Yes - I think a lot depends on how the club is run and the ambition and sorts of players they have. If you go down and then lose a large chunk of the squad because finances or player ambition forces it then you're probably in a worse position then a club who can hang on to a good nucleus of players. If Bournemouth kept all their current players they'd probably do well, but that's not likely, I don't think.

Seems like there are loads of uncertainties this year regarding both finances and transfer windows, due to Covid-19 too.

Bournemouth's finances should be fine, considering they've been a PL club for a number of years now, but to be fair, I've no idea if that's actually the case.

This - though the double relegation is fairly irregular tbh at least immediately

It's also a wildly fun league to be part of if you can shake the feeling of degradation and settle back to enjoy the rollercoaster. The quality of the football is decently high and in a typical season play offs are within sight until week 30 for about a dozen teams.

The elation of a promotion I suspect matches everything bar CL success and the PL title. The play off final is surely a much bigger game nowadays than the the Cup final.

I'm one Palace fan who is quite relaxed about looming relegation. The one real pitfall for me of relegation is the spectre of financial collapse - that bit is no fun.

The concept of lesser teams doesn’t really apply though.

There are teams who are on a bad streak but just about everyone has a huge financial backer and there are loads still with PL parachutes in place,

Bottom beating top is commonplace. My Stokey brother-in-law was most relaxed about Brentford Leeds and Forest in the run in to avoid very real chance of relegation.

    Magnus Carlsen... I'm baffled.

    GW1:
    Sterling (v) - 20pts
    KDB - 7pts

    GW2:
    KDB (C) - 22pts
    Sterling - 6pts

    GW3:
    Sterling (C) - 16pts
    KDB - 5pts

    .
He seems to prefer Sterling, yet captains KDB in GW2, catching his haul. What made him decide to switch? HOW DID HE KNOW?!

I had a look at the expected data for GW1, which I know he rates highly, but KDB's was crap and Sterling's was great as usual, so that can't have influenced the decision to switch... why'd he give KDB the armband...

Problem with Fernandes is if UTD do not get as many penalties next season, that already sees his hauls reduced. He is not the kind of player to just pop up out of nowhere and score. Pulisic settled now and full season with hopefully no injuries I reckon will be one of the most explosive players next season.

14 pens is 9 more Liverpool and twice as many as Chelsea. Don't see any particular reason why that variation should continue. Either his value as pen taken falls or the pen taker for another club rises.

I wouldn't try not to get distracted from the wood by the trees

Even in the scenario where they didn't get fouled in the box & awarded as many penalties as this season - some of those incidents would then by definition go on to be goals

And remember Bruno hasn't had 14 penalties - he's had 4 penalties (3 of them were right imo, one was wrong)

And in addition to those four penalties he's gotten 4 goals from play, 8 assists, and hit the woodwork at least another 2-3 times if not more - he's also a baps magnet

Not a player I'd really want to be going without tbh - I don't even think he'll cost mega bucks, reckon 10.5 max, if not 10.0

Man U getting so many pens is down to Martial and Rash, Puli will also pull a lot of pens for Chelsea, and now Willian is gone it will be interesting who the Chelsea pen taker will be.
How many pens have Palace had? Zaha typically draws a lot and feeds Mili.
The number of Man U pens will drop but not by much, Chelsea’s number will increase.

As for Pulisic - he;s going to have so much competition - see the post further above.

You shouldn't be blind to team value but as you suggest it should be considered a metric of very low importance indeed.

You do need to think about whether price rises/falls have the potential to get in the way of your plans. But if price changes are ever any kind of starting point for your transfers, you're very unlikely to do even moderately well overall.

The guy who won my ML ended up at 3,408 overall and had a TV of 109.8! It's not the be-all and end-all, but he used it really well; he was able to have Salah, Sterling, KDB, Bruno, TAA and Robertson for most of the run-in. His GW 38+ free hit included Robbo, Bruno, KDB, Salah, Dilva, Jimi, Auba, Kane (plus Pope, Aurier and Pieters). Not having to choose between them and not having to use transfers juggling around meant he missed fewer hauls and did really well over the last few weeks.

I build TV first part of the season (107.4). Helps for FH, WC in DGWs. This year TV didn’t help me after restart. To many cheap options: Greenwood, Foden..

First two names in my team next season

      Greenwood 8.5m
      Foden 8m

      Will they be in yours?

Yh that would complicate things. I like to see Greenwood uptop. He's more natural striker than both Rashford and Martial

Plus longterm Sancho will be a threat to Martial than Greenwood

          Green - 7 mill
          Foden - 7 mill
If greenwood is 8.5 what do you think rash and martial will be? I think both will be 10 mil and I prefer both massively to Green. And Foden I don’t really care about

I've used it for 2 seasons without issue. Mainly use during the live matches to compare my real-time score to other managers that I'm tracking in my various ML's. It has some useful tools which you can use to compare against the tools provided on this site - it's uses different algorithms but where they overlap with this site then generally it's a good help to make decisions.

Up to this season it had a great premium tool "transfer spy", but now that FPL aren't revealing the team value of other players until GW starts, it isn't worth paying for. #propercheat

I've made a provisional list and it looks like this:
            Foden
            Saka
            Greenwood
            Tierney
            Pulisic
            TAA (possibly even at 8.5)
            (Stuart Armstrong)
            (Lamptey)
            Brackets indicate requiring further investigation

Depends on signings, Soucek if his price stays low. Interesting to see if Jimenez stays at Wolves, Grealish stays at Villa, whether Haller regains spot from Antonio or if West Ham sign a new striker, if not Antonio for sure.

One thing about this season I will say is that I found myself chasing points too often. Biggest example was GW38+. I transferred out KDB and Bruno thinking that Sterling’s GB motivation coupled with DSilva pushing KDB deeper and Martial’s speed on the counter would be more important than sticking with 2 players who had been for the most part very consistent (albeit Bruno in much less time). Will keep this in mind when I get the itch to hit that confirm button!

Yes me too. I paid too much attention to Sterling / Silva hype so transferred out De Bruyne and Bruno. I lost twenty points right there. I compounded this by keeping armband on Salah. When to hold my nerve and when to change my strategy are two lessons to keep learning.

What’s your fantasy team of the season? Just use the FPL player positioning

          Pope
TAA - Lundstram - Soy (Robbo, Aurier)
KDB - Martial - Salah - Traore (Bruno)
          Ings - Jimi - Vardy

Mane over Mo - easy to forget how offbeat it felt to prefer him when he was a full million cheaper. Mane KdB was quite out there as a variation of Mo Sterling and it was ultimately way better value.

Greenwood sneaks in as 8th attacker and Bruno surely starts.

VVD gets in ahead of Robbo

Bruno is beast yea, I only benched him due to playing a short period. And this is kinda based on what these players did for my team really. Don’t think I ever had VVD this season, but yea probably better pick then Robbo in reality.

This isn't my dream team, but rather the players that did me well over the season, obviously wouldn't pick them all now. By time I got Bruno he was owned by most of my rivals so kept me afloat but didn't help me gain ground.

Fixture ticker / RMT tool combo. Basically all i use in there other than the odd comparison. Spotting holes in your team weeks in advance is really beneficial. Could do the same without it by creating your own ticker and making your own predictions but ain't got time for that. Not a stats based player at all but if you are then theres a heap of that in there too. Seems almost endless tbh.

Anyone browse the transfrmrkt.co.uk site much? They've a very nifty feature where you can set the league table to different time ranges ... For example:

League table *Before* Bruno came in (all teams 24 games played):

              1. Liverpool 70
              2. Man City 51
              3. Leicester 48
              4. Chelsea 40
              5. Man Utd 34

League table *After* Bruno came in (all teams 14 games played):

              1. Man Utd 32
              2. Man City 30
              3. Liverpool 29
              4. Arsenal 26
              5. Chelsea 26

Goal difference, goals scored, and goals conceded are all even more interesting...

If Man Utd make a good use of this transfer window, they could surprise a lot of folks next year

Martial as a forward next season around 9.0 really going to spice things up next season. Green as a mid could be the biggest bargain of all. Some are suggesting 7 to 7.5. Will his price increase by that much? I am thinking around 6.5.

FPL will try put people off the Martial and Rash double up imo. So will classify both as forwards. I know people like Greenwood but he is not an alternative to either of those two for me.

7.5 at most I'd say. Robertson moved to 7 after 213pt season. TAA 7 also and got 210pts this season. 8 would be really unfair. I think they'll both stay at 7 but 7.5 wouldn't be a huge shock.

I posted about TAA yesterday, and on why I expect him to be 7.5.

He started the season at 7.0 after scoring 185 points in 2460 minutes. This season he's scored 210 points in 3173 minutes (actually worse points per minute ratio), I think a 0.5 increase is fair.

One of the replies offered a nice counter-argument as to why he should be 8.0, but 8.5 doesn't make much sense in my opinion.

If it really is 7 or 7.5 mil, he's such a bargain. Liverpool concede goals but only like 1 goal per match so many times

If they do priced him based on his performance before Liv win the title, it would be 8 I'd say. From GW 18 onwards

"After just one explosive season, they're usually cautious about the price, but two seasons in a row will give him a good boost. Plus he's already reached 7.7 now with almost all FPL managers keeping him the whole season, so I doubt they'll start him at lower than that."

That makes sense too, so I would understand 8 (even though personally I think it should be 7.5 as I said). More than 8 I don't agree with.

Other than KDB and Bruno, this looks about right to me.

                        think KDB will be 12/12.5?
I cant see Bruno jumping to double digits so soon, not enugh data to go off to justify it, same price as Son imo. 10 Mil is possible

Saka, Foden and Green may be some shrewd picks next season. 7.5 is too much for me in regards to Foden, Green I can hack that
