Vote for the best FPL goalkeeper of 2019/20

The Fantasy Football Scout end of season awards have officially been launched with the first poll now available to vote in.

As ever, we begin with the goalkeepers, assessing the key candidates on the strengths of their 2019/20 from a Fantasy Football perspective.

Overall points, price and value in Fantasy Premier League are all factors to consider.

It must be said that the goalkeeper position was a tricky one to navigate once again this season, although for completely different reasons than the previous campaign.

In 2018/19, the high-performing assets were largely more expensive ones from big clubs. But their respective sides, of course, required attention in other positions and most of the budget options proved reliable only for short spells at a time.

Arguably, 2019/20 was the complete opposite. This time around, the expensive premium options failed to provide the usual level of consistent returns allowing some of the cheaper mid-price assets to assume ‘set-and-forget’ status. Although, even then, it was a somewhat underwhelming year for goalkeepers in the £4.5m price bracket…

2018/19 Team of the Season Review – Goalkeeper

  • Goalkeeper: Alisson
  • Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson, Matt Doherty
  • Midfielders: Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah, Raheem Sterling, Ryan Fraser, Eden Hazard
  • Forwards: Raúl Jiménez, Sergio Aguero
→ Which team has allowed the fewest number of big chances this season (41)?

After securing a place in the 2018/19 Team of the Season, Alisson did not have the best follow-up campaign.

2019/20 began in the worst way possible for Liverpool’s goalkeeper, as he picked up an injury just 38 minutes into the Gameweek 1 win over Norwich City.

Even though that unlocked Adrian as a £4.5m option in the Reds’ defence, they still only kept two clean sheets from a possible nine before Alisson’s return.

And even the Brazilian’s comeback did not help stop the rot at the back as Jurgen Klopp’s men struggled to match the defensive heights of 2018/19, ironic considering they ended up winning the league this year.

After collecting 21 clean sheets during his first campaign in English football, it took Alisson until Gameweek 16 to secure one in 2019/20. With issues elsewhere in the defence, despite a return from injury in Gameweek 9, he went another seven matches before earning that all-important shut-out.

In the end, Alisson did manage to get a total of 13 but, as is to be expected with a big club, he could only supplement this with 58 saves.

Therefore, it was a score of just 122 points this season, 54 fewer than the year before. It also made for an inferior points-per-game total, Alisson averaging 4.2 in 2019/20 compared to 4.6 in 2018/19.

2019/20 CANDIDATES

DEAN HENDERSON

It was quite the debut campaign in the Premier League for Dean Henderson, whose total of 160 points was the second-highest among goalkeepers, making him a rare shining light among a drab £4.5m bracket.

With four double-figure hauls between Gameweeks 18 and 30+, that impressive overall score came from a total of 13 clean sheets, an impressive tally for a newly-promoted shot-stopper, as well as 16 bonus points and 97 saves.

Those additionals carried mixed value for Fantasy managers. While the 16 from bonus was the third-best in the division, eight different shot-stoppers produced more stops than Henderson.

It is that fact that probably denied the Sheffield United man the prize of highest-scoring FPL goalkeeper, but Fantasy managers should consider the quality of saves Henderson made this season, especially as he could be fighting for starts at Manchester United in 2020/21.

Across the course of this season, the Blades’ goalkeeper recorded an xG Prevented score of +8.30, behind only Hugo Lloris (+9.50). That means the saves he did make were mostly from very high-quality chances. Combining that with Manchester United’s 36 goals conceded in 2019/20 (third-best) could be a powerful pairing next year.

RUI PATRÍCIO

2019/20 was a season of improvement for Wolves’ defence, which was good for the roughly 10% of managers who backed Rui Patrício.

During their debut Premier League campaign, Nuno Espirito Santo’s men were certainly adept at keeping things tight at the back but they often struggled to convert this into clean sheets.

With just eight shut-outs in 2018/19, Wolves’ second season in the top-flight saw a continuation of astute defensive play but, largely thanks to Willy Boly’s return from injury, there was a much more mature approach to closing this out into clean sheets.

It was 13 of these, in the end, of Patrício, the joint-third-best in the Premier League.

That was enough for 153 points across the campaign, the fourth-highest among goalkeepers.

However, what hindered the Portuguese international from taking his Fantasy value to the next level, perhaps combined with his starting price of £5.0m, was the lack of additionals.

With Wolves playing a style of football that largely protects the goalkeeper, he managed only 90 saves and eight points from bonus.

NICK POPE

Even though he missed out on a share of the Golden Glove, 2019/20 was still an incredible campaign for Nick Pope, the only other £4.5m option to offer real prolonged value across the season.

16 clean sheets for Burnley, the club’s highest ever tally in a top-flight season and second only to Ederson this year, was the lynch-pin of Pope’s 170-point score, his best-ever.

But it was the additionals that made the difference for the Clarets’ rapidly improving shot-stopper.

His 120 saves was the fourth-highest in the division while nobody in the same position came close to matching his 23 bonus points.

Pope really does offer the complete package for goalkeepers. Some offer clean sheets without much prospect for saves or bonus, while others can secure those additionals on account of facing more shots but, inevitably, this means fewer shut-outs.

With Burnley’s style of play, which does allow plenty of attempts on goal to their opponents, helps Pope register saves and bonus, but because they are good at limiting these shots to outside of the box, the clean sheets are also much more achievable.

The question now is whether or not this will still constitute value for money in 2020/21 when Pope is likely to be as expensive as £5.5m.

AARON RAMSDALE

While not hitting the dizzy heights of Pope and Henderson, there was something on offer from £4.5m option Aaron Ramsdale for spells in 2019/20.

A total score of 126 points across the campaign does not look too special on the surface but it was good enough to finish in the top-five for the Value (Season) statistic on the official FPL site, working out at 28.6 points per million spent.

Bournemouth’s perennially porous defence allowed Ramsdale to rack up 128 saves, more than Pope and behind only Martin Dúbravka and Tim Krul in the overall standings.

The autumn was when Bournemouth’s goalkeeper was the most popular. Between Gameweeks 6 and 12, the Cherries kept three clean sheets and Ramsdale scored 41 points across the seven matches.

Averaging 5.9 points per game during this period, he also added an assist into the mix, one of just three goalkeepers to register one in 2019/20.

Ramsdale’s efforts have been good enough to earn transfer rumours of a purported move to stay in the Premier League despite Bournemouth’s relegation. Depending on what the future holds for him, Fantasy managers would do well to keep an eye on him moving forward…

MAT RYAN

It was another solid if not spectacular year for Mat Ryan, who was somewhat overshadowed in the £4.5m bracket by Pope and Henderson.

135 points was only just good enough for the top 10 among goalkeepers, and lower than his personal best of 146 during his debut campaign, but there was still something on offer for his 11.5% ownership.

Allowing greater spending elsewhere, the Brighton goalkeeper finished in the top five for points per million spent, his score of 28.7 beaten only by Patrício, Henderson and Pope.

It was also a top-five finish for Ryan’s total of 117 saves and 14 bonus. It was perhaps clean sheets where he came up short compared to the high-performers, with a total of just nine.

However, there is potentially a lot to like about the Australian for 2020/21, who might just be able to stay in the £4.5m bracket for a fourth successive season. If he can sustain his level of saves and bonus with greater conversion rate on the clean sheets could come a landmark season for Ryan.

KASPER SCHMEICHEL

Despite the disappointing finish to the campaign for Leicester City, Kasper Schmeichel was an important Fantasy asset during the first half.

In the first 15 Gameweeks of 2019/20, the Foxes’ shot-stopper produced seven clean sheets, two more than any other during that period. At the end of the campaign, his total of 13 was the third-best in the division.

Eventually, both Pope and Henderson overtook his season score and Schmeichel ended up finishing in third-place among goalkeepers, 156 points his best-ever FPL return.

His starting price of £5.0m and the cheaper option of Caglar Soyuncu in the same defence did stop the former Manchester City man from ever soaking up humongous levels of ownership but for a prolonged period he was one of the most reliable goalkeepers of 2019/20.

        Yup

One of Mo's big weaknesses is the sheer amount of shots off target he accumulates - very hard for him to get baps without a double return

Also Bruno is already talismanic, Salah is one of a few great and equally influential players.

It's that jobshare that has really eaten into his FPL output this season - that forward line just isn't big enough for two 300-points a season players

Bobby is already selfless enough, but the other two have to basically split everything two ways while they're on the pitch together

From what I've seen (not much - correct me if I'm wrong Liverpool fans) the difference is Mane plays for the team whereas Salah always looks to score for himself first.

                In other words -
                Firmino: selfless
Mane: averagely selfish, about the same as other forwards
                Salah: very selfish

Firmino is the facilitator that contributes heavily to them being those kind of players, I'll probably start with whoever is cheaper from Salah and Mane which means they'll be exactly the same price of course.

That's what I did two years ago when Mane was a good 2 million cheaper (or something like that). Worked out at the time, though tbh I think at most there will be a 0.5 difference, maybe even no difference (either both at 12 or both at 12.5).

0.5 difference sounds right, reflecting the fact that Mane never takes pens.

Lack of motivation for Salah? New club bounce for Bruno?

Although despite this, Salah looked to be quite unlucky not to score score goals in that time, and Bruno seemed a tad fortunate at times. I'd bet a lot of money on Salah outscoring Bruno next season.

Ah he was yeah (Salah that is), no doubt he could have filled his boots in quite a few games - Burnley springs to mind as particularly trouser filling as a non owner

But Klopp actually started him for about 7 games in the space of 2 weeks at one stage, they were trying everything to get him to score

If Pool sold Mane - we'd have a different beast on our hands all of a sudden I'd imagine - back to 300points a season mode, certainly back to 250 anyways, bringing him up to a KDB/Bruno level of output

I'd want KDB, Sterling, Bruno, Mane and Pulisic in the midfield, with a front 2 of Auba and Aguero.

At the back I'm not greedy, TAA and two cheap ones would do 😀

The problem with Aguero is that he is old and you've got to think this might be his final season at City. Even without injuries he still had plenty of rotation this season for that reason and it will be even worse next season. Can't just say because Jesus is crap Aguero will be first choice because Aguero is not the future, if Jesus doesn't improve markedly City will just go for someone else. Sure he's a legend of the game but David Silva was about 7.5 this season because it was his final season, I really wouldn't be surprised if Aguero got a similar amount of minutes next season yet people would be outraged if his starting price was 9 or below

That's kind of the premise of my comment - i.e. he's old and this might be the season where he deteriorates, plus there's rotation with Jesus etc.

Yet every season he has remained the most explosive option when fit. Last year he scored more than 200 points in a fraction of the minutes of other players.

Teams competing in Europe in August could get extended break before the new season, according to Sky Sports.

Man U, Man City, Wolves, and Chelsea (less likely as they're about to lose out to Bayern) could get a later start date than the rest of the Prem? Decision to be made in early August

pretty high imo. Need to give players some time of off season.

This new season is going to be extra difficult for players, especially without a winter break

What would be the point? United, City and Chelsea will be playing in Europe again next season, so a later start just means more fixture congestion for them.

Not about fixture congestion, more about giving all teams an actual break and offseason. Teams that will be playing in August are essentially going to be playing football for a year straight into next year. They need a proper pre-season period before the new season

I remember either reading or hearing that players are required to have a minimum 3 week break, I can't remember where that's from though unfortunately.

Yes I know that's the intention, but the effect would be fixture congestion later in the season. I think it should be recognised that the clubs that qualify for European leagues have large squads, decent youths and are expected to utilise them. Unfair on Wolves - their squad, having played a 365 day season do deserve a break, but the rest should start the season at the start, imo.

I think a break period is mandated too, for obvious reasons. It's not right for players to go straight from European football to pre-season. Would have been better to start the league season a little later.

Arguments both sides, Robbo with 213 points last season came in at 7m. I think the difference between TAA/Robbo and some of the big hitters up front like Sterling/Vardy is that Sterling/Vardy could have had much higher points tallies, 250 points for a big-hitting City mid or a golden-boot winner is feasible, would never expect that from a defender.

TAA at 8.5 is a long shot in my opinion, he’ll be 8 at max I think. In my case at 8 & 7.5, I’d have both despite clean sheet issue, their going forward potential is immense. Practically wingers and if they get the CS & attacking returns in the same week, can really cause upward swings I reckon.

    Here is an interesting one

    TAA or Pulisic?

TAA quite clearly thumps Pulisic with points. Sure Pulisic was out during spells in the season.

If TAA was to play the role of a box to box mid, keepers would be having nightmares with a beast surging towards goal and shooting at will...

Prefer him as a defender for cleanies and attacking returns though...

That's the thing - we don't know who'll be next season's Pukki or Lundstram, but we sure as heck know who'll be next season's TAA, VVD and Robbo!

Hey, for RMT of next season - by my estimate not that much over 100m

          Pope, 4m
          TAA, Robbo, VVD, 4m, 4m
          KDB, Foden, Bruno, Traore, Saka
          Jimi, Greenwood, 4.5

          Thoughts chaps?

cba to work out prices but looks decent enough to me, you can pretty much just focus FTs on the Foden/Traore/Saka slots

I estimated c 104m. i think Foden will be reasonably nailed with Dilva gone. Traore/Saka could be placeholders for emerging cheap mids, allowing possibly a bandwagon 4.5 defender or 5m striker to sneak in.

        Anywhere between 38.5m-40m for that.
I'd be tempted to get another good defender and play a 4-5-1

So Chelsea are due to sign Havertz for £90m next week. Talk of Oblak and Chilwell for similar fees and a new CB.

With Ziyech and Werner signed already they are due to spend £3-400m easily this summer. How the hell are they allowed to do this? I hate what they did to football when Abramovic came in.

Cheating City showed that no matter the rule its not really a rule if you've money to fight it and the tools to hide/not provide evidence.

FFP is dead and Roman wants to win again.

This, basically. I dunno, with their prior tran ban, did it allow them to build up a bit of credit in the bank?
I think the current Top 4 will consolidate into a new Top 4 with Top 6 withering away. Can't see Spuds or Arse challenging.

To be fair they had a ban last year and they have morata and hazard money to spend too. So 300 million doesn't seem that abnormal if u take everything into account.

    Total Captain Points : 620
Total Captain Points as % of Overall Score : 26.01%
    Total Vice-Captain Points : 236
Possible Captain Points if you Always used your Vice-Captain instead : 472
Possible Captain Points if you Always Captained Highest Gameweek Scorer : 1032
Total Actual Captain Points as % of Highest Possible Captain Points : 60.08%

Had a really smooth year with captain picks. My captain rarely scored monster hauls (32 being the highest and 48 for Salah TC) still had a decent 16-24 returns most weeks (15).

      Wow. Nice.

Only got 421 (c) pts (19 GWs where I had a (c) score less than 10 pts after doubling and only 6 where they scored 20+ pts after doubling). With your level of (c) points I would have finished in the top 100 overall.

      Shows how important (c) is.

Mods: Just got an email saying my current membership has expired with links to sign up for next year, but I already did that a while ago via PayPal. Does the fact I can still access the member's area mean I'm all set? Was the email sent to me by mistake? Is my membership going to auto renew as expected (from 2021/22 as I've already paid for 2020/21)? TIA

With PL starting Sept 12 & all clubs agreeing to minimum 30-day break:
PL side in EL final can’t play before Sept 21
PL side in CL final can’t play before Sept 23
PL side in Super Cup (on Sept 24) might not play until 3rd weekend

    Massive implications on FPL!

Yes. Means we build a team for first 2/3 GWs and then WC.

Could get very messy for Manchester players, Wolves too.

Pick a team for 3/4 weeks, IB usually after GW4 (not sure on that next season), then WC back in once everyone is back.

Triple on Liverpool assets early on could be feasible with others missing.

Apparently fixtures won't be announced until just 3 weeks before the season starts too. Doubt the game will relaunch until they've been announced.

Pulisic can be awesome value next season. I don’t think FPL will put his price above 9...purely due to his score in this season but he will be better than Hazard IMO.

I'm hoping lampard doesn't start rotating him now that he has so many options.
