Vote for the best FPL goalkeeper of 2019/20

The Fantasy Football Scout end of season awards have officially been launched with the first poll now available to vote in.

As ever, we begin with the goalkeepers, assessing the key candidates on the strengths of their 2019/20 from a Fantasy Football perspective.

Overall points, price and value in Fantasy Premier League are all factors to consider.

It must be said that the goalkeeper position was a tricky one to navigate once again this season, although for completely different reasons than the previous campaign.

In 2018/19, the high-performing assets were largely more expensive ones from big clubs. But their respective sides, of course, required attention in other positions and most of the budget options proved reliable only for short spells at a time.

Arguably, 2019/20 was the complete opposite. This time around, the expensive premium options failed to provide the usual level of consistent returns allowing some of the cheaper mid-price assets to assume ‘set-and-forget’ status. Although, even then, it was a somewhat underwhelming year for goalkeepers in the £4.5m price bracket…

2018/19 Team of the Season Review – Goalkeeper

  • Goalkeeper: Alisson
  • Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson, Matt Doherty
  • Midfielders: Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah, Raheem Sterling, Ryan Fraser, Eden Hazard
  • Forwards: Raúl Jiménez, Sergio Aguero
→ Which team has allowed the fewest number of big chances this season (41)?

After securing a place in the 2018/19 Team of the Season, Alisson did not have the best follow-up campaign.

2019/20 began in the worst way possible for Liverpool’s goalkeeper, as he picked up an injury just 38 minutes into the Gameweek 1 win over Norwich City.

Even though that unlocked Adrian as a £4.5m option in the Reds’ defence, they still only kept two clean sheets from a possible nine before Alisson’s return.

And even the Brazilian’s comeback did not help stop the rot at the back as Jurgen Klopp’s men struggled to match the defensive heights of 2018/19, ironic considering they ended up winning the league this year.

After collecting 21 clean sheets during his first campaign in English football, it took Alisson until Gameweek 16 to secure one in 2019/20. With issues elsewhere in the defence, despite a return from injury in Gameweek 9, he went another seven matches before earning that all-important shut-out.

In the end, Alisson did manage to get a total of 13 but, as is to be expected with a big club, he could only supplement this with 58 saves.

Therefore, it was a score of just 122 points this season, 54 fewer than the year before. It also made for an inferior points-per-game total, Alisson averaging 4.2 in 2019/20 compared to 4.6 in 2018/19.

2019/20 CANDIDATES

DEAN HENDERSON

It was quite the debut campaign in the Premier League for Dean Henderson, whose total of 160 points was the second-highest among goalkeepers, making him a rare shining light among a drab £4.5m bracket.

With four double-figure hauls between Gameweeks 18 and 30+, that impressive overall score came from a total of 13 clean sheets, an impressive tally for a newly-promoted shot-stopper, as well as 16 bonus points and 97 saves.

Those additionals carried mixed value for Fantasy managers. While the 16 from bonus was the third-best in the division, eight different shot-stoppers produced more stops than Henderson.

It is that fact that probably denied the Sheffield United man the prize of highest-scoring FPL goalkeeper, but Fantasy managers should consider the quality of saves Henderson made this season, especially as he could be fighting for starts at Manchester United in 2020/21.

Across the course of this season, the Blades’ goalkeeper recorded an xG Prevented score of +8.30, behind only Hugo Lloris (+9.50). That means the saves he did make were mostly from very high-quality chances. Combining that with Manchester United’s 36 goals conceded in 2019/20 (third-best) could be a powerful pairing next year.

RUI PATRÍCIO

2019/20 was a season of improvement for Wolves’ defence, which was good for the roughly 10% of managers who backed Rui Patrício.

During their debut Premier League campaign, Nuno Espirito Santo’s men were certainly adept at keeping things tight at the back but they often struggled to convert this into clean sheets.

With just eight shut-outs in 2018/19, Wolves’ second season in the top-flight saw a continuation of astute defensive play but, largely thanks to Willy Boly’s return from injury, there was a much more mature approach to closing this out into clean sheets.

It was 13 of these, in the end, of Patrício, the joint-third-best in the Premier League.

That was enough for 153 points across the campaign, the fourth-highest among goalkeepers.

However, what hindered the Portuguese international from taking his Fantasy value to the next level, perhaps combined with his starting price of £5.0m, was the lack of additionals.

With Wolves playing a style of football that largely protects the goalkeeper, he managed only 90 saves and eight points from bonus.

NICK POPE

Even though he missed out on a share of the Golden Glove, 2019/20 was still an incredible campaign for Nick Pope, the only other £4.5m option to offer real prolonged value across the season.

16 clean sheets for Burnley, the club’s highest ever tally in a top-flight season and second only to Ederson this year, was the lynch-pin of Pope’s 170-point score, his best-ever.

But it was the additionals that made the difference for the Clarets’ rapidly improving shot-stopper.

His 120 saves was the fourth-highest in the division while nobody in the same position came close to matching his 23 bonus points.

Pope really does offer the complete package for goalkeepers. Some offer clean sheets without much prospect for saves or bonus, while others can secure those additionals on account of facing more shots but, inevitably, this means fewer shut-outs.

With Burnley’s style of play, which does allow plenty of attempts on goal to their opponents, helps Pope register saves and bonus, but because they are good at limiting these shots to outside of the box, the clean sheets are also much more achievable.

The question now is whether or not this will still constitute value for money in 2020/21 when Pope is likely to be as expensive as £5.5m.

AARON RAMSDALE

While not hitting the dizzy heights of Pope and Henderson, there was something on offer from £4.5m option Aaron Ramsdale for spells in 2019/20.

A total score of 126 points across the campaign does not look too special on the surface but it was good enough to finish in the top-five for the Value (Season) statistic on the official FPL site, working out at 28.6 points per million spent.

Bournemouth’s perennially porous defence allowed Ramsdale to rack up 128 saves, more than Pope and behind only Martin Dúbravka and Tim Krul in the overall standings.

The autumn was when Bournemouth’s goalkeeper was the most popular. Between Gameweeks 6 and 12, the Cherries kept three clean sheets and Ramsdale scored 41 points across the seven matches.

Averaging 5.9 points per game during this period, he also added an assist into the mix, one of just three goalkeepers to register one in 2019/20.

Ramsdale’s efforts have been good enough to earn transfer rumours of a purported move to stay in the Premier League despite Bournemouth’s relegation. Depending on what the future holds for him, Fantasy managers would do well to keep an eye on him moving forward…

MAT RYAN

It was another solid if not spectacular year for Mat Ryan, who was somewhat overshadowed in the £4.5m bracket by Pope and Henderson.

135 points was only just good enough for the top 10 among goalkeepers, and lower than his personal best of 146 during his debut campaign, but there was still something on offer for his 11.5% ownership.

Allowing greater spending elsewhere, the Brighton goalkeeper finished in the top five for points per million spent, his score of 28.7 beaten only by Patrício, Henderson and Pope.

It was also a top-five finish for Ryan’s total of 117 saves and 14 bonus. It was perhaps clean sheets where he came up short compared to the high-performers, with a total of just nine.

However, there is potentially a lot to like about the Australian for 2020/21, who might just be able to stay in the £4.5m bracket for a fourth successive season. If he can sustain his level of saves and bonus with greater conversion rate on the clean sheets could come a landmark season for Ryan.

KASPER SCHMEICHEL

Despite the disappointing finish to the campaign for Leicester City, Kasper Schmeichel was an important Fantasy asset during the first half.

In the first 15 Gameweeks of 2019/20, the Foxes’ shot-stopper produced seven clean sheets, two more than any other during that period. At the end of the campaign, his total of 13 was the third-best in the division.

Eventually, both Pope and Henderson overtook his season score and Schmeichel ended up finishing in third-place among goalkeepers, 156 points his best-ever FPL return.

His starting price of £5.0m and the cheaper option of Caglar Soyuncu in the same defence did stop the former Manchester City man from ever soaking up humongous levels of ownership but for a prolonged period he was one of the most reliable goalkeepers of 2019/20.

      10.5?

Awkward price point probably. He's right up on my wishlist. Favourable early fixtures and he's all but in.

Mou does love a cf and there was a stat a couple of weeks back (before his brace) that he has the best goals per game ratio of anyone in Europe this season once you factor in England games too.

          😉

Read it somewhere. Sure it's a cheat but it does point to the fact that he's a magnificent striker still. Cracking goal against Palace. And in FPL being the second greediest player around doesn't hurt and it helps that Mou seems to prefer him at the pointy end of the pitch.

Closed a 100 point lead to take one of my ML, but was unable to achieve that juicy sweet top 100k finish. Final standing was a respectable (but mediocre compared to some on here) 150k.

    Keys to success (imo):
Watch more games - the eye test is real, unfortunately I've been preoccupied this season
'value chasing' in the first few weeks - my TV peaked at 103m, all the big boys are 105+
More passhun and aggression - Again was unlucky and too conservative in the early weeks (i.e Sterling/Auba not performing). I only took two 4pt hits all season, definitely could have squeezed in more risks.

Sterling 11.5. He started this season at 12.0 and he scored fewer points and had a worse points per minute ratio too.

Mahrez 9.5 looks about right, and will be too much for me sadly.

Mahrez's price can't be too high considering how often he is benched or subbed off.

It would be easier if the 5 subs rule was scrapped.

Chelsea seem to be buying half a new team.

There's unlikely to be any preseason to speak of. Assuming Havertz happens and they get a goalie and a defender is this a bit off an avoid early on? Known quantities come first?

      1. Greek Freak
        • 8 Years

I'd love to have Pulisic but with him, Havertz, Ziyech, Willian staying etc. there will be too much rotation. Maybe Werner since he's the only recognised striker? (don't think Giroud or Abraham will be threats to his starts)

        1. pingissimus

Werner is the asset that most interests me. Agree on that midfield - worse than City's for options. God knows what RLC is thinking.

Werner would not have signed to play second fiddle to anyone. He probably will be nailed unless he does not hit the ground running.

My thinking too. Would be an interesting pick depending on price. I have hope he'll be able to accompany an expensive mid without too many sacrifices elsewhere.

Has that post about the move to win fpl via ‘cheating’ been removed?
The original poster I think is getting confused between cheating and exploitation of what the problem actually is, which is leaks.

The leaks are the problem here, not the player, quite simply. It’s not cheating to exploit using the leaks but I do agree it is somewhat ‘gamebreaking’. Changing the deadline as others have eluded to might help the matter.

For the last time, the winner didn't even have Salah in his team. He didn't make any transfers or captain changes based on leaks. The poster was either trolling or posting wrong information.

I don’t think there is shame in using them but I do think they ruin the game slightly.

The one hour deadline is there for a reason, for us to choose our teams and captains etc based on personal judgement, before team sheets are officially out for the first game.

The leaks create panic, rushed moves/changes and are also not always accurate.
Not to mention the fact that exploiting it requires constant checking and research in the hours leading up to the deadline every week, which realistically not everyone is able to do.

To sum it up better, leaks come from insider information, which in my opinion shouldn’t be used in a game based on judgement.

Nah - leaks are part of the game. Like debatable VAR decisions and broken goal-line tech that directly influence which team was relegated. Adds flavour and talking points - would hate a perfectly sanitised game.

Who were your successes and failures this season?

      For me.....

      Getting greenwood around 32+
Keeping Trent through the Xmas “tough” run
      Lundstrum from gw1
      Auba on Fh38

      Flops....

Son captaincy for his Chelsea red

Very broad topic. Too many failures to recall 😀

Successes were a crazy -8 hit in GW35 that involved selling Salah and KDB - this led to getting and captaining Sterling for his hat-trick. Also Auba captaincy vs. Norwich was pretty sweet.

          • 8 Years

Just for a short list of failures: clinging too long to clearly bad picks earlier in the season because 'maybe next time they'll score' - Pukki, Tielemans, Lucas Moura, Cantwell...

Captaining Sterling a lot when he was blanking mid-season.

Benching Lundstram for his 21-pointer. (this was compounded by the fact that he was about to come off my bench until Otamendi came on for 30 seconds vs. Southampton...)

Successes. Got all theses early at just the right time and as they started to hit and all at base prices or just 0.1 off.

        Vardy
        KdB
        Mane
        Ings
        Grealish
        Pukki
        Lund
        Bruno
        Mo!
        Greenwood

        Failures.

Also had a combo of Guaita Hendo and Pope for 20 weeks at an average of just over 3 ppm - then got Ryan in for even less.

Ripped up a perfectly good team in WC21 and never capitalised on my early scouting.

Actually just went back and had a look at how I started the season and wow. Sterling and Salah captained let me down way more than I actually remembered. Blank after blank after blank, even when they got points it was just an assist or two

Yup the same happened with me and the problem is that I never got out of the hole those two dig for me early season. Since I was chasing from the start I started ignoring template players Ings, DCL and also sold KDB every now and then which didn't go right at all.

Definitely learnt some lessons key lessons though!

Made the same mistake, because of many early fails with those two I ignored template and also went a bit maverick with captains to try and catch up which only pushed me further back. Consistently chose terrible captains this year, even if they seemed obvious. Over reliance on Salah based on what he did in his first season and not recognising other than an early hatrrick sterling was playing very poorly

Strangely I managed to go Mane KdB as an alternative from week 2 but my early captain scores were pretty rubbish too. One great KdB C in week 6 when loads of others fluked him in as a VC and that's all really.

I had a fair few Sterling Sterling blanks too. Looked reasonable choices, e.g. at home to Southampton shortly after they got mashed.

That is a pretty similar trend to me -- yours is a bit higher. Mine peaked at 106.9, dropped by 2.0 when I played the wildcard, and then spent most of the rest of the season between 105 and 106.

I think I went for more differential players late in the season, which may have resulted in capturing fewer price rises.

Yes I definitely took a big hit in TV during WC but looks like it worked it's way back up again. I don't chase value but I do factor it in and will make a transfer early in week to avoid rises, but only if I planned to make it before the deadline anyway. I think the risk of potential injury in those few days is outweighed by the TV benefits, especially if you have a reasonable bench to cover the occasions where the player you bring in gets injured.

Yup, people who've always been rubbish suddenly had blinders out of nowhere. The crux of my leagues was Bruno became an option to them as perma cap as man utd players pretty much always seem to get instantly popular, and Bruno happened to return massively. And also I relied heavily on Salah sterling captain while they didn't return, whereas they jumped onto whoever scored last week, was painful watching pukki ings etc outscore Salah and sterling every week

Yes. I finished second this season in work ML with OR of 350k, my worst finish since I've been taking it seriously in 5 years of playing. Winner was 216K OR which was his best finish in 5 years. Luck was out this year for some reason, despite the extra effort I put in.

                There's no real template

Think of how many combinations of lottery numbers you can pick with 6 slots and 49 options for each slot

Now think of how many permutations there are for an FPL team with 11 slots and much more than 49 options...

Yes very true when you put it like that. The game still has a huge amount of luck, chance, variance, call it what you will associated with it. That said, players who have decent OR year in year out must be finding something extra from somewhere. I'll keep looking!

There is no actual template team. It's the players that seem to keep appearing in most teams posted by managers on here suggesting there is something about them which makes them worth getting.

The fpl site shows the PERCENTAGE ownership. Take the highest ownership combo that is affordable, that is the template team. You can subset that for rank tiers to give insight on active managers, cut out the dead teams with popular but Injured players.

They post the top 10K template on FFS most weeks a few hours after the deadline. Usually the article title is some variation on "What the top 10,000 managers did this week" and it contains a graphic representing the top 10K template of most owned players overall, on wildcards, and on free hits. I'd probably consider the "overall" one "the template", with the wildcard one more like an attempt to anticipate what the template will be in the near future and get ahead of the curve.

              Hi everyone,

I just had a look on anewpla.net and realised just how terrible my captain choices have been all season.

So, trying to improve that next year, and I’m wondering whether I can create some metric by following the Captain Poll here.

Does anybody know where/if I can access the history of all Captain Poll results for the season?

I have a feeling most managers on here had problems nailing captains this season. Maybe the FFS captains poll was the problem and too much reliance on it.

I'm sure somebody at some point did analysis that showed if you captained the person 3rd in the poll you'd outscore if you always captained 1 or 2 in the poll

*disclaimer* this may be totally in my head but I vaguely remember something along those lines

372 points if my calculations are correct.

                  Points since GW25:

                  Bruno: 117

Do you see Bruno returning next season as heavily as he has so far in half a season? Part of me says no, some assist were him laying it off to someone who scored a worldie, and some penalties were suspect will they get as many

On the other hand they genuinely earned a lot of penalties and we haven't really seen his full open play scoring potential yet

I don't think he can keep going at 117 points every 14 games, as that would leave him scoring 320 points on a 38 game season!

But he can afford a 20-25% regression & still be hitting in the 250's...

It's 130 points more than my Cap picks. By my own analysis I correctly captained the highest scoring player in my team only twice the entire season, whereas if you look at the top 10 guys they generally capped their highest scoring player around 9 times in the season.

Do you have the stats for Liverpool and United generally since then?

Vardy also springs to mind here. I40 odd points in the first half of the season when Leicester were a huge force. After that not a lot really and Leicester fell off a cliff too.

I do have Bruno listed but am mindful that United put in half a good season and it was a very strange season. This time last year Sterling was the must have. He wasn't really. Sterling was a must have in a City side that was flying.

                      United fly Bruno comes in?

I know that United are literally top of the league since Bruno came in, and Unbeaten

City are second, but lost 4 games in that time period, Liverpool are third behind City

If you had 24 failures you must have had 14 hits.
what figure have you used ie + 20 points

Out of the fails (10 pts and below) there were only 3 that were actually 10 points (assist for 3 points and 2 for playing 60)

Some were even 1 and 0 points in the fails, wasn't even always 2's

Anything over 10 is a success so there were 14 of them

I want to start with Salah and KDB in midfield next season.

Going to cap which ever one has the home fixture that GW. If both play home the same GW I will toss a coin.

Reckon this is a good plan to follow and the 2 biggest points monsters in the game.

Salah was my main cap this season.

I bet I can easily switch between two set players each GW.

Obviously injuries etc will mix it up.

NAH. The reason I say it is it is most probable KDB won't play the opening game due to them being in CL. It will make it interesting if teams miss the first 2 or 3 gameweeks

Salah appears to be in the process of decline. His point totals over the past three seasons are as follows: 303, 259, 233. It wouldn't be unreasonable to suspect this will continue. I'm sure he'll still be one of the top scoring players in the game next season but if his price isn't reduced to a more reasonable 11.5-12 there will be some question marks whether better value can be found elsewhere. But I suspect price rises to the likes of KdB and Mane will offset that.

You might be surprised to know that Salah matched Mane in away games over the course of the season.

                                Home : Salah - 148, Mane - 136
                                Away: Salah - 85, Mane - 85

Mane did not feature in 2 away games and was benched in 3 away games.
Salah did not feature in 3 away games and was benched in 1 away game.

I presume you count the away games in which Mane was absent. That's the real takeaway. Salah's a monster when Mane isn't there, regardless of venue

Not many players get 32 goals in a season. His first season for LFC was increadible. Record points for an FPL player 303.

                            Followed by 259, 233 and 233.

How can that be in decline?

I think we should ignore his first freak season for comparatives. That performance of sheer points will probably never be matched by anyone again.
He was an unknown quality and flourished as a result, plus Mane hadn’t quite hit his potential in the red kit either.

He is still in decline however definitely, mainly due to Mane scoring a lot, he seems more wasteful and linked to this his bonus potential has suffered.

I don’t know the stats but I do feel he’s getting a similar number of chances.

His price next season will be interesting, specifically compared to Mane’s.

So what is the view on here about FPL moving the deadline to two hours before KO to avoid lineup leaks? No better example of what happens if someone sits and presses F5 constantly before KO to gain an advantage with the overall winner doing just that to come from third place to win (whilst the guy who was TC Salah and had no phone signal all day etc). Is that really in the spirit of the game?

Yes it is in the spirit of the game. The truly devoted managers will scour every scrap of information that can help them get an edge on their rivals. It's what separates FFScout users to the casuals. I have no sympathy for a guy who's top of the world going into the final gameweek of the season and decides to do something as reckless as go out with the missus to somewhere where he can't get phone signal. What was he doing? Hiking in nature somewhere? Sorry but that's either hubristic arrogance or an insufficient commitment to the game. It's the final gameweek. Sit yourself in front of your computer and be ready. The missus can wait. Next weekend there's no PL, which means no FPL. Why the rush? You know what? I'm GLAD he didn't finish top. It would've been an insult to those of us who love this game more than life itself.

                                FPL is divorce rocket fuel.

If they don't FPL Towers should be shot.

It should be moved to two hours before the first kick-off because it is fairer for those in different time zones.

I have seen the argument that you could move the deadline to the time of the first kick-off. I disagree with this in FPL because there is usually only one game that kicks off early. Compare to other popular fantasy games - NFL (there are multiple 13.00 (East Coast time) games all kicking off at the same time), Golf (tee times and conditions are known in advance), UCL (multiple games kicking off at 20.00 UK time) etc.

The way I see it is like regulation. Throughout history, businesses have tried to push the boat out with innovation, and then the public realise it goes too far and want it clamped down on. A good example of this right now is social media giants and data privacy / data use. FPL is the same. We have allowed the 'innovation' to occur by letting people get line up leaks before the deadline. Now is the time for the 'regulators' to step in.

Can't see it changing Mark & Jules both exploit the leaked team news to their advantage.
I read somewhere Jules had the Liverpool leak before it went onto twitter?!

She works in the media so presumably has access to the PL media site, which has all the PL lineups on it about 15 mins before the FPL deadline. The media site is there for accredited media people to prep for their media work (e.g. discuss who is playing, prepare their reports, sort out graphics for line ups etc.)
