Vote for the best FPL goalkeeper of 2019/20

The Fantasy Football Scout end of season awards have officially been launched with the first poll now available to vote in.

As ever, we begin with the goalkeepers, assessing the key candidates on the strengths of their 2019/20 from a Fantasy Football perspective.

Overall points, price and value in Fantasy Premier League are all factors to consider.

It must be said that the goalkeeper position was a tricky one to navigate once again this season, although for completely different reasons than the previous campaign.

In 2018/19, the high-performing assets were largely more expensive ones from big clubs. But their respective sides, of course, required attention in other positions and most of the budget options proved reliable only for short spells at a time.

Arguably, 2019/20 was the complete opposite. This time around, the expensive premium options failed to provide the usual level of consistent returns allowing some of the cheaper mid-price assets to assume ‘set-and-forget’ status. Although, even then, it was a somewhat underwhelming year for goalkeepers in the £4.5m price bracket…

2018/19 Team of the Season Review – Goalkeeper

  • Goalkeeper: Alisson
  • Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson, Matt Doherty
  • Midfielders: Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah, Raheem Sterling, Ryan Fraser, Eden Hazard
  • Forwards: Raúl Jiménez, Sergio Aguero
→ Which team has allowed the fewest number of big chances this season (41)?

After securing a place in the 2018/19 Team of the Season, Alisson did not have the best follow-up campaign.

2019/20 began in the worst way possible for Liverpool’s goalkeeper, as he picked up an injury just 38 minutes into the Gameweek 1 win over Norwich City.

Even though that unlocked Adrian as a £4.5m option in the Reds’ defence, they still only kept two clean sheets from a possible nine before Alisson’s return.

And even the Brazilian’s comeback did not help stop the rot at the back as Jurgen Klopp’s men struggled to match the defensive heights of 2018/19, ironic considering they ended up winning the league this year.

After collecting 21 clean sheets during his first campaign in English football, it took Alisson until Gameweek 16 to secure one in 2019/20. With issues elsewhere in the defence, despite a return from injury in Gameweek 9, he went another seven matches before earning that all-important shut-out.

In the end, Alisson did manage to get a total of 13 but, as is to be expected with a big club, he could only supplement this with 58 saves.

Therefore, it was a score of just 122 points this season, 54 fewer than the year before. It also made for an inferior points-per-game total, Alisson averaging 4.2 in 2019/20 compared to 4.6 in 2018/19.

2019/20 CANDIDATES

DEAN HENDERSON

It was quite the debut campaign in the Premier League for Dean Henderson, whose total of 160 points was the second-highest among goalkeepers, making him a rare shining light among a drab £4.5m bracket.

With four double-figure hauls between Gameweeks 18 and 30+, that impressive overall score came from a total of 13 clean sheets, an impressive tally for a newly-promoted shot-stopper, as well as 16 bonus points and 97 saves.

Those additionals carried mixed value for Fantasy managers. While the 16 from bonus was the third-best in the division, eight different shot-stoppers produced more stops than Henderson.

It is that fact that probably denied the Sheffield United man the prize of highest-scoring FPL goalkeeper, but Fantasy managers should consider the quality of saves Henderson made this season, especially as he could be fighting for starts at Manchester United in 2020/21.

Across the course of this season, the Blades’ goalkeeper recorded an xG Prevented score of +8.30, behind only Hugo Lloris (+9.50). That means the saves he did make were mostly from very high-quality chances. Combining that with Manchester United’s 36 goals conceded in 2019/20 (third-best) could be a powerful pairing next year.

RUI PATRÍCIO

2019/20 was a season of improvement for Wolves’ defence, which was good for the roughly 10% of managers who backed Rui Patrício.

During their debut Premier League campaign, Nuno Espirito Santo’s men were certainly adept at keeping things tight at the back but they often struggled to convert this into clean sheets.

With just eight shut-outs in 2018/19, Wolves’ second season in the top-flight saw a continuation of astute defensive play but, largely thanks to Willy Boly’s return from injury, there was a much more mature approach to closing this out into clean sheets.

It was 13 of these, in the end, of Patrício, the joint-third-best in the Premier League.

That was enough for 153 points across the campaign, the fourth-highest among goalkeepers.

However, what hindered the Portuguese international from taking his Fantasy value to the next level, perhaps combined with his starting price of £5.0m, was the lack of additionals.

With Wolves playing a style of football that largely protects the goalkeeper, he managed only 90 saves and eight points from bonus.

NICK POPE

Even though he missed out on a share of the Golden Glove, 2019/20 was still an incredible campaign for Nick Pope, the only other £4.5m option to offer real prolonged value across the season.

16 clean sheets for Burnley, the club’s highest ever tally in a top-flight season and second only to Ederson this year, was the lynch-pin of Pope’s 170-point score, his best-ever.

But it was the additionals that made the difference for the Clarets’ rapidly improving shot-stopper.

His 120 saves was the fourth-highest in the division while nobody in the same position came close to matching his 23 bonus points.

Pope really does offer the complete package for goalkeepers. Some offer clean sheets without much prospect for saves or bonus, while others can secure those additionals on account of facing more shots but, inevitably, this means fewer shut-outs.

With Burnley’s style of play, which does allow plenty of attempts on goal to their opponents, helps Pope register saves and bonus, but because they are good at limiting these shots to outside of the box, the clean sheets are also much more achievable.

The question now is whether or not this will still constitute value for money in 2020/21 when Pope is likely to be as expensive as £5.5m.

AARON RAMSDALE

While not hitting the dizzy heights of Pope and Henderson, there was something on offer from £4.5m option Aaron Ramsdale for spells in 2019/20.

A total score of 126 points across the campaign does not look too special on the surface but it was good enough to finish in the top-five for the Value (Season) statistic on the official FPL site, working out at 28.6 points per million spent.

Bournemouth’s perennially porous defence allowed Ramsdale to rack up 128 saves, more than Pope and behind only Martin Dúbravka and Tim Krul in the overall standings.

The autumn was when Bournemouth’s goalkeeper was the most popular. Between Gameweeks 6 and 12, the Cherries kept three clean sheets and Ramsdale scored 41 points across the seven matches.

Averaging 5.9 points per game during this period, he also added an assist into the mix, one of just three goalkeepers to register one in 2019/20.

Ramsdale’s efforts have been good enough to earn transfer rumours of a purported move to stay in the Premier League despite Bournemouth’s relegation. Depending on what the future holds for him, Fantasy managers would do well to keep an eye on him moving forward…

MAT RYAN

It was another solid if not spectacular year for Mat Ryan, who was somewhat overshadowed in the £4.5m bracket by Pope and Henderson.

135 points was only just good enough for the top 10 among goalkeepers, and lower than his personal best of 146 during his debut campaign, but there was still something on offer for his 11.5% ownership.

Allowing greater spending elsewhere, the Brighton goalkeeper finished in the top five for points per million spent, his score of 28.7 beaten only by Patrício, Henderson and Pope.

It was also a top-five finish for Ryan’s total of 117 saves and 14 bonus. It was perhaps clean sheets where he came up short compared to the high-performers, with a total of just nine.

However, there is potentially a lot to like about the Australian for 2020/21, who might just be able to stay in the £4.5m bracket for a fourth successive season. If he can sustain his level of saves and bonus with greater conversion rate on the clean sheets could come a landmark season for Ryan.

KASPER SCHMEICHEL

Despite the disappointing finish to the campaign for Leicester City, Kasper Schmeichel was an important Fantasy asset during the first half.

In the first 15 Gameweeks of 2019/20, the Foxes’ shot-stopper produced seven clean sheets, two more than any other during that period. At the end of the campaign, his total of 13 was the third-best in the division.

Eventually, both Pope and Henderson overtook his season score and Schmeichel ended up finishing in third-place among goalkeepers, 156 points his best-ever FPL return.

His starting price of £5.0m and the cheaper option of Caglar Soyuncu in the same defence did stop the former Manchester City man from ever soaking up humongous levels of ownership but for a prolonged period he was one of the most reliable goalkeepers of 2019/20.

What players are we thinking get their positions reclassified next season?

Seems likely that Lundstram will, one of the more obvious. Antonio is probably going to be a FWD also. Kane in midfield 😉

I know it won’t happen but Greenwood/Rash as mids would be nice.

You think so? Would be great. If wide forwards are going to be reclassified as mids though then there would be an argument for the likes of Aubameyang too.

If Sancho signs for United, that adds another exciting option and I'm sure he'd be very popular as a pick.

As of today, I'd be going Bruno + Martial though.

Great - even more mids to join the famous 'midfielders' like Salah, Sterling and Mane. Of course Auba will have to join them if they're to be consistent. That would leave only a false 9 (Firmino), two rotation threats (Jesus and Aguero) and a defensive midfielder as the only premium forwards in the game!

Antonio will be interesting to see. Moyes has said that he was filling in as a forward because of the injury to Haller, but obviously he did very well so may get used there more next season. Unsure if he has played there enough to be classified as a forward in FPL yet, he could easily be used mostly as a winger again next season

One thing I've learnt from looking back through Magnus' season is that fixtures matter... A LOT.

Sometimes he'd have both Sterling and KDB during a strong set of City fixtures, then he'd transition to Salah and Mane for Liverpool's good fixtures (GW13 WC). He did this kind of thing constantly throughout the season, often doubling on attacks during strong runs, and then transitioning them out when the fixtures declined.

I won't be committing to any one player, but rather cycling through the big hitters depending on runs of fixtures.

True but it was a case of nullify his threat and Norwich quickly became a blunt attacking force. 5.5 wouldn’t be bad business if looking to build a cheap front three perhaps.

The problem is, this season they tried to price any starting attacking midfielder, winger, or striker at a minimum of 6.0, regardless of how bad a team they were on. A few fell through the cracks (e.g. Cantwell, eventually Greenwood), but most of these assets were useless when there were some players from the likes of Chelsea and Leicester for the same or only slightly higher prices.

Maybe they will rethink this policy, but I'm not holding my breath.

      Depends on Pep.

We also need to have an idea of who City will be bringing in.

I think Jesus is going to be a very good option next season and will feature much more. Aguero will be phased out due to his age.

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 12 Years

City need to replace Sane, right?

I don't think Aguero is finished just yet personally, he looked sharp before the injury. Would actually consider him if City's fixtures are strong.

They are loaded with options even without Aguero. Aguero always seems to get injured.

Sane was out the whole season so any attacking player Pep adds will reduce Aguero's minutes and increase Pep roulette with Aguero lurking in the background.

Reckon next season Jesus will be Pep's favourite pet. He has been racking up the minutes as Pep probably getting him ready to shine next season.

Yeh, I could've put him in - I just think most people would only risk a cheap 5th mid from the Hammers until they show reason for more confidence.

I've just been plating with the transfer page. On today's prices (I know, just a bit of fun) I can get this squad:

            Pope, 4m
TAA, Robbo, VVD, 4m (Thomas), 4m (Robinson)
            Sterling, KDB, Foden, Martial, Fernandes
            Jimenez, Greenwood, Ings
            itb 1.1

              True.
That's a very good squad. BUT, All of the attackers and mid (atleast) will be more expensive next season. And I'm guessing your team value is more than 100 + 1.1 itb.

Interested in seeing what Chelsea's offensive players will be priced at next season. They will have a strong mid and attack with Mount, Pulisic, Werner and Maybe Havertz.

Oh absolutely - my real squad will have to go without 2 or 3 of those key midfs/strikers.
My disastrous last-second hit to get rid of Salah left me with 2.9m itb.

Problem with Chelsea is with new signings clogging up an over-stocked attacking midfield, I'd be unconfident that the like of Mount or Pully would get sufficient minutes or that the newcomers would hit the ground running. You'd think their new striker would be nailed but new Chelsea strikers underperform too often for my liking. So I'd hold off until maybe first wildcard to get Chelsea assets.

                  Ah, right!

Regarding Chelsea, that could be the case. I guess preseason might show, although it will be short. I'm quite interested in Timo Werner if he is less than 10. But I expect him to be around that though. Mount 8, and Pulisic 9-9,5, maybe?

How did you season go? I had my second worst season in 8 years of playing (the official game, used it to win the Scandinavian in '13), but still feel like it went alright due to an appalling start.

I ought to be pleased. My best season in 6 years, finishing 25K.
But for a day during GW30+ I broke into the Top 1000. After that I went on a downward spiral.

Oh wow, never been in the top 1000. Still a great finish, but can understand the frustration.
I threw away a 50 point ML lead from the restart. A lot of it was down to bad luck/VAR as well.
I've always had a strategy of very few hits, which seems to have worked. But I wonder if I should try and play a bit more agressive next season. So many of the changes that I wanted to do took 3-4 gws and cost me so many missed points.

For me, there are many strategies that can be successful - I don't like those pundits who insist their way is the only way.
I had a 100+ point lead in my ML after GW30+ and blew it on Sunday to finish second. I can't put it down to bad luck - what happened it that I played FPL as an obsessive until the interruption. Over those 3 months I never paid any attention to football, PL or FPL. When the games resumed I was cold, like a player who hadn't trained during lockdown. Never got my mojo back, made too many bad transfer, benching and captain decisions. I looked through the winner's transfer history - postGW30+ he played a blinder, every weekly 1FT spot on.

I feel the same way about being cold when it all started again. But there was nothing to go by. I had all the inform players before the lock down and it felt like a reset. And I was then too hesitant to take hits to jump on inform players.
Yep, captaining is so damn important. Got half of them, but my rival got all.
The winner will probably always have a history like that, otherwise he wouldn't be the winner. I feel like a played better this year, but still ended up a lot worse than last year.
Luckily I defended my 2nd place in ML with 2 point difference before the gw against a rival that had FH. So feels like a small victory none the less.

Imagine if Sane never got injured and Bayern never chased him.

Pep made more changes than any other manager this season.

Imagine how bad Pep roulette would have been in City's attack with a fit Sane lol.

So Pep has a space open now and whoever fills Sane's spot, how keen would be going more than one City attack next season?

Roulette hell hole to get worse next season with Augero returning from injury and replacement for Sane incoming...

It wasn't that bad the year before - Sterling was the most nailed of the front 3 like he was now, Aguero was first choice in the centre, and Sane was the 'slightly risky but explosive differential' pick that Mahrez was this year. (Mahrez was pretty much a non-factor for most of 2018-19 FPL-wise)

It won't change very much if there's a Sane replacement - Sterling will still be the safest pick to start most games. I guess maybe Aguero will start to be phased out? But we've been saying that for a few years now and he's remained Pep's top choice.

I read that Aguero's contract is up end of next season. Not sure they will renew it with him getting on with age.

If Sane was never injured and did not throw his toys wanting to leave, he would have eaten into others minutes on the pitch. As it is, you will be swearing Pep for not starting the City player you picked for GW1. More than two you will be smashing your TV.

I doubt it - Sterling as I said was a safe pick even with Sane healthy. A KDB and Sterling double-up looks very much on the cards for me.

Just about the worst thing you can do is flip-flop between City options - even the most nailed ones will be rested here and there, but you have to stick to avoid those TV-smashing moments.

You may be right about Aguero though. However, he's still so much better than Jesus so it'll be interesting to see how much Pep will trust the latter.

Sterling played less minutes this season compared to last. If things were still good with Sane not wanting to leave and injury following, each City attacking asset would have seen less minutes this season.

Who ever you get you have to be patient when they got benched.

This year, Mahrez was playing the Sane role and Foden was playing the Mahrez role from the previous year. Nothing has changed.

Also Pep's tactic of ultimate rotation has shown the worst result for points.

Players need to get use to their teammates.

That's why Liverpool are champions and United started getting results when the lineup become a standard one

For me it's unexpected that Bernardo Silva, their best player from the previous season, became so marginalized. Sterling + Kun + Bernardo was their front three when they won the league ahead of Liverpool. In Pep's team a lot rides on pre-season training and preparation. Maybe that's what got Bernardo behind everyone else. I feel it would be wrong to assume he will stay a 2nd-tier player, or in midfield.

Move the deadline 15 mins before the games. UCL FF can do it, why not FPL?

It will be massive excitment to the game.

Catching price rises or wait for the team news will be neverending argument.

Also a lot less people will be pissed of by not getting a 1 pt cameo from the captain or so

It won't actually affect the game that much because normally (GW38 aside) there's only one early game that we'd have the team news for before the deadline. (and normally it's not the one most people's captains are from)

I voted for Pope as the best goalkeeper. Hendo was second close. What you guys think?

On the other hand we all know who was the worse keeper in the league...

"Meanwhile, talkSPORT’S Andy Jacobs recently expressed a belief that Chelsea needed to sign a top centre-back and new goalkeeper when the transfer window reopens.

“I’d like to start with the thought that £71million can buy you the worst keeper in the English football pyramid, and including Sunday League,” he said.

“I reckon there are keepers in the Sunday League who are better than him.

“He makes Ross Turnbull look like Lev Yashin – he never stops anything! Nothing!

      “If it’s on target it’s a goal.

“If Petr Cech came out of the crowd in his suit we’d have been better off, we might have got a result,” Jacobs continued, still fuming.

“He’d still be better than Kepa in a suit. Honestly."

Thank you Andrew. Like you are reading my mind. Can't agree more.

I used to pay for it but just don’t see the point now.

So many free stat websites out there rather than the huge price increases they’ve put in here.

Don’t like the twitter-type way the site is heading so the ‘support’ reason is gone as well.

I tried not to be too hit-happy this season and managed to restrict myself to 7 and achieved my best-ever rank (although I did play it obsessively -monitoring price changes constantly, using tools on here- for the first time too, which probably helped :).

I've been looking through the records of this season's top 10 (+ Magnus) and what stands out is:

      1. These players took an average of 4-5 hits this season, so err on the side of caution if you think you can hit your way to the top.

      2. 9 of the top 10 took an early (or early-ish - up to week 10) Wildcard. I usually never do this but may have to think again next season.

      3. Team Value before the break:
      (Final rank) 1st = 107.9
      2nd = 106.5
      3rd = 106.3
      4th = 106.2
      5th = 105.4
      6th = 105.8
      7th = 109.1
      8th = 107
      9th = 105.1
      10th = 105.2
      11th = 104.7
Apart from some outliers from 7-9, the final rank order roughly follows the TV amount at that stage of the season.

I know this is obviously a minute data set, but just a little food for thought for those like me aiming to break into the higher ranks next season.

      Anyone made any other observations?

        1. I dunno, there's no hard-and-fast rules. During GW30+ I briefly broke into the Top 100 and I'd taken nearly 40 hits by that point. Clearly, hits are good if they come off. Went a bit Leicester after that though.

Had I known the season would be stopped and restarted, I'd have saved my chips, but you can't legislate for that. I'm one of those that never pay the slightest attention to TV.

        One more tidbit:

Magnus Carlsen didn't captain a City or Liverpool player only 9 times this season, and of that 9 he had 6 captaincy fails. And of those 6 captaincy fails, Salah or Sterling outscored them that GW.

To be expected really, we know Man City and Liverpool are going to score ridiculous amounts and for the most part we know their players who score the most.

So why don’t we captain them more? Haha

Excellent strategy. Liverpool and City players only made up well under 50% of the Top Players by gameweek, but more often than not your Red/City captain would score well even if they were pipped by the likes of Pukki or Tarkowski. I'll adopt the same strategy but add in United as a third option. Probably.

Simple, maybe not so. TV does not guarantee you a good rank. Greenwood at 4.5 made it fairly easy to have lots of spare cash. Early tfr's get a high TV but it can go wrong. However, with the limited info coming from managers these days, the need for last minute transfers is not so important.

excluding new teams: Who have I missed out apart from the obvious Pool, Citeh, ManU and Wolves

      (7 mainstays) Pope (5.5), TAA (8.5), Laporte (6.0), KDB (11.0), Bruno 10.0), Pulisic (8.5), Ings 8.0), =57.5 mil (perma cap KDB)

      (7 possibles) Tierney (5.0), Lamptey (4.5), Pieters (4.5), St Max (6.0), Soucek (5.0), Greenwood (7.5) Ihenacho (6.0) = 39 mil
      Goalie (Throw away(4.0), = 4 mil

Watch list: Stanislas (if someone buys him) Trossard Sakah McNiel Neto Rodriguez
The reason for the post is not predicting. It is a guess on my part to see if I could afford the players.
It goes out of the window anyway as it seems some sides playing in Europe and national teams will require a rest and there will be postponements. The 1st WC will be used week 3 maybe to account for players coming in.

        TAA, VVD, Robbo (2x4m)

        Midf KDB, Bruno
        Str Jimenez, Greenwood

          Leeds?

Bielsa sides have that record of starting really quickly. They look to be a team that could (underlined) cause a bit of a stir. A bit like SU they have a clear and set gameplan and are likely to stick to it - it's just a very different gameplan,

I expect to be getting at least 2 in early doors - likely to be cheap as chips and great way to fund hitters elsewhere

Look at one defensive asset imo.

They had for a while just about the best defensive record in Europe. It fell off a bit second half of the season and the PL will be a tougher gig but they're likely to offer great value at the back

I'm going 3 at the back@ TAA, Robbo, VVD.

I'd be looking at a midfielder option.

That still leaves you a goalie - double Leeds might come in at 8.5 or perhaps 9,0 given it's uncertain who starts right now

I'm hoping Laporte comes in cheaper than VVD.

He was well above 50% for cs on starts and offers in attack too. City had a poor defensive year in some ways as he was so irregular but still got those cs.

Also did some really interesting research into Ederson versus 3rd City mid before 38. Ederson was simply better value as a 3rd City mid averaged at best 8 points and then you had to guess which one plays and scores. Even in the 5-0 in 38 he was just one point off Sterling and 2 off Mahrez. Laporte is more likely to pick up baps etc. He makes no end of sense imo

We still had the best defense in the championship though.. The reason why we started conceded more was because of Kiko and he seems to be gone for good.

I don't doubt there's quality in defence, but with TAA, Robbo and VVD nailed, my last 2 will have to be 4m fodder.
Even with a decent keeper, I'm going Pope+4m for that position.

As a leeds fan, there are several options that excite me. But have to wait for FPL pricing.

Pablo will be tempting but I see him making more impact off the bench than 90 min full games.

If we don't sign a new goalkeeper, Meslier could even come at 4m. For defenders, Dallas and Ayling are great options offensively and defensively.

I would stay clear of their attackers for now

LFC will be defending their title and expect them to be up for the challenge so I will try squeeze in 3 x Pool.

Lloris, TAA, KDB and Salah to start with. Will figure the rest once we can pick our teams.

            1) Always captain a big hitter, regardless of fixture

Manchester City have reached an agreement for the transfer of Ferran Torres, according to reports. According to GoalEspana, via City Xtra, the two clubs have agreed a fee for the 20-year-old in the region of €30-40million, though it's not clear how much of the fee would be bonus based.

Spurs are interested in Southampton's Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. It's all about that price tag, and potentially whether Kyle Walker-Peters is part of the deal.

Liverpool planning shock move for 22-year-old Watford forward Ismaila Sarr this summer. The 22-year-old winger is valued at nearly £22m, though Watford would surely ask for more than that to let him go this summer.

Arsenal are reportedly planning to make an offer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang a new £250,000-a-week deal in a bid to keep the Gabon international forward at the Emirates Stadium.

Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish fears being priced out of a move to Manchester United.Villa want a huge £80million for their star man.

Arsenal to trigger Joelson Fernandes £40million buyout clause 'in next 24 hours'.

Tricky thing is season starts before transfer window closes. I can see DDG starting then getting his transfer, with Hendo stepping up. Or Hendo leaving on TDD for Chelsea. Either way, if he's deemed United back-up when the price list comes out he'll likely be 5m. If he starts at United or Chelsea first choice, presumably 6m.

Hard to see Chelsea getting enough for Kepa either and having to loan there as well - I assume he's on something huge

Hendo to Chelsea rumours are triggered by most unreliable media outlet Sun and Mirror. I have never even read their heading completely since they put 'Messi to Manutd looks a done deal'. Manutd are no Arsenal and no way they will help their direct rivals next season like Chelsea as both will fight for 2nd spot next season and potentially title in 2 years

He might do better for them at SHU for another year

Guarantees Man Utd 6 points Vs Sheffield Utd, whilst simultaneously putting a brick wall in front of the other 18 teams who have to play Sheffield Utd...

I somehow see Mancity piping Liverpool for title next season and in 2022 if Chelsea,Manutd get their CBs right, fight for title just like old days which reached its peak with UCL final in Moscow. They both finishing this season in UCL places can make this very well a reality. Next season not strong enough confidence to challenge the mighty Liv/Mcity teams

I think Liverpool & City will dominate again. United will slightly narrow the gap without ever challenging for the title. I see Chelsea further behind but solid 4th. There will be a bigger gap between 4th and 5th which could be the case for a few years.

Abramovich eventually closed the tap on trying to buy the League each season.

They will spend big money in this window though. Going to have a pretty decent team with Werner and possibly Havertz being added and a few others.

            Yep

Comment above was how Frank loves an English player - tough love if he does. The one I feel most for is RLC - heck of a player but he really needs game time even if its slightly managed because of his back.

Still trying to work out what Frank is trying to build.

Ziyech and Pulisic both cut inside, which means both fullbacks have to push forwards to hold the width, right?

But if both fullbacks go forwards you need a more reserved midfield 3 like Liverpool's.

So if Havertz arrived would he be cover for Ziyech on the RW? He does play there sometimes. And does this mean Mount will be restricted to a backup for Pulisic on the LW?

        Pep roulette
To the frequent frustration of fantasy football managers, Pep Guardiola made a total of 144 changes to Manchester City’s starting XI this season — the most by a manager in a single season in Premier League history. Guardiola made only nine changes fewer than Wolves manager Nuno Espírito Santo, Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder and Burnley’s Sean Dyche combined (153).

Yet even with that many changes, 3 Man City players (KDB, Sterling, Mahrez) still ended up in the top 20 highest scoring players this season. A fit Aguero probably would have got into that list as well.

So is the moral of the story - Don't worry about Pep roulette, just choose their good players (KDB, Sterling and one of Aguero / Jesus depending on who is expected to get more game time) and the points will come.

Very true - KDB only ended up not starting 6 games, that's not too bad really

Sterling's 90 vs. Norwich was actually nice from Pep also, he could have gotten more

Kev is a must, even if priced same as Salah. With Dilva gone, I'd expect Foden to be a first team regular (ie more minutes than Bilva and Mahrez)

Bilva is a rogue element here

Not that long ago he was the go to player. Wouldn't be at all surprised if he had way more pitch time next season now Dilva is gone

It was the first few GWs of last season. He started games, on fire and cheap as chips. People leapt on his bandwagon and the wheels fell off!

Hang on, just checked and it wasn't quite like that. He was nailed from GW2 but it was the hattrick v Watford that got everyone salivating. Jumping on the bandwagon after that game was the classic chasing lost points faux pas.

Well after inking in Kev, I suspect I'll be pushed to afford a second Citizen. My preference for Foden is based on anticipated price. May just start with Kev.
I'd say Ederson, Laporte and prob Garcia will be decent value but I've already said I'm committed to triple Red defence so they're not for my squad.

Just can't bring myself to commit that heavily in defence - just don't have the game style for it. TAA and Robbo lasted all of one week last time before GW2 WC 🙂

Ha! Never considered this strategy before, but the trio have proved themselves for 2 full seasons now. Just doesn't seem a risk, only unorthodox. Ah yeh, I miss out if Salah or Mane are on fire.

Huge proportion of those lost minutes in post lockdown frenzy too.

For quite a while he had more minutes than Mane and Salah iirc - also seem to recall only Auba had more premium minutes than him for quite a while

          Please do - particularly defensively!

I'm just lazily looking at their goals conceded record, and seeing that it's below even Sheffield United's from their promotion year - and thinking that their GK (whichever one Bielsa goes with) or a 4.5 defender is surely going to offer value?
