Scoutcast Episode 342 – End of season review

The Scoutcast trio of Joe, Andy and Az are back for one more time this season to assess the highs, the lows and lessons they should probably learn.

This episode is dominated by the community’s questions on a raft of topics from deadlines to reclassifications.

With a chaotic final Gameweek deadline for many, the Scoutcasters start off with tackling the difficulties around timing a deadline right in a global game, where not everyone is awake to make last minute moves. It is an issue which is further complicated in the 24-hour worldwide social media news culture that has emerged in recent years.

The proliferation of Fantasy Premier League manager numbers is also pondered. Is a high finish trickier than ever with so many engaged players enjoying the game?

Lessons learned features prominently. What pivotal moments in the season made them think differently about how they play the game? For Joe the importance of Double Gameweeks being married up with chips is a particular issue that will influence him next season.

Players to target next season also takes up a large part of this mammoth hour and a half episode. This discussion takes in reclassification of players like Manchester United’s Anthony Martial, those that are certain of a price hike as well as the potential low priced gems to target.

The five-substitute rule and the potential for an early Blank Gameweek, and possibly a Double too, are other additions to their chat.

They also assess how their traditionally goal strewn Gameweek 38 went and finish the show with some powerful words from Shirtless about family and FPL.

The Scoutcast will return along with a host of other video and podcast content for the next campaign. In 2020/21 Joe will be joined by Az as a regular co-host, with a different guest each week to help them make sense of each Gameweek’s inevitable twists and turns.

Best value starting players ranked in order of best points per million (starting price) with some notable others for comparison.

    Goalkeepers: Pope (4.5) = 37.8ppm. Henderson (4.5) = 35.6ppm. Schemeichel (5.0) = 31.2ppm.
    Defenders: Lund (4.0) = 36.0ppm. Baldock (4.5) = 31.6ppm. TAA (7.0) = 30.0ppm. Tarkowski (5.0) = 28.6ppm.
    Defenders: Dunk (4.5) = 28.4ppm. Doherty (6.0) = 27.8ppm. VVD (6.5) = 26.2ppm. Roberston (7.0) = 25.9ppm.
    Midfielders*: Martial (7.5) = 26.7ppm. KDB (9.5) = 26.4ppm. Traore (5.0) = 26.0ppm. Grealish (6.0) = 24.8ppm.
    Midfielders: Cantwell (4.5) = 24.7ppm. Willian (7.0) = 24.0ppm. Mahrez (8.5) = 20.6ppm. Mane (11.5) = 19.2ppm.
    Midfielders: Salah (12.5) = 18.6ppm. Son (9.5) = 17.8ppm. Sterling (12.0) = 17.0ppm. Siggy (8.0) = 11.9ppm. Pepe (9.5) = 11.2ppm.
    Forwards: Ings (6.0) = 33.0ppm. Ayew (5.0) = 26.4ppm. Jimenez (7.5) 25.9ppm. Vardy (9.0) = 23.3ppm.
    Forwards: Greenwood (4.5) = 22.9ppm. Rashford (8.5) = 20.8ppm. Auba (11.0) = 18.6ppm. Firmino (9.5) = 16.3ppm.

Best value way to spend £100.0m.

    Pope, (Henderson)
    TAA, VVD, Doherty, (Baldock, Lund)
    Mane, KDB, Martial, Willian, (Traore)
    Vardy, Jimenez, Ings

This team as a set and forget with KDB captain would score 2410 points with another 576 points sitting on the bench (I have not factored in auto-subs, vice captain or power chips).

*this would be completely different if Bruno Fernandes was here from the start. He scored 117 points in 14 games, which converts to a whopping 318 points over a full season. At a starting price of £8.0m his ppm would be a record breaking 39.7!

Conclusion: Defenders by far offer the best value, however we already knew that from previous seasons. Every Premium player with starting price of £10.0+ had a season value under 20ppm The mid-range bracket players were the big winners for FPL 19/20.

“.... Best value way to spend £100.0m ...”. Where did you get this team from?

      Henderson
      TAA, Doherty, Lundy
      Salah (C), KDB, Willian, Martial
      Vardy, Ings (VC), Jimmy
      (Pope, Evans, Manquillo, Traore)

Apparently (according to Reddit) if you’d picked this team in GW1 you’d be OR #3 (three!) with 2554 points

And that's without playing any chips, or making a single FT

      It wouldn’t even have cost 100.0 (99.5)

              In no particular order

              - Cut our the noise on here, I was looking for advice to often or following the herd often to my own detriment

              - Looking at fixtures in bulks of 4-6 for transfers in and analysing their performance over that period

              - Not kneekerking in the flavour of the week

              - Growing the balls to remove popular players at the right time if I genuinely thought their output would or was dipping ie Jiminez, Salah, Mount, Grealish, Rashford

              - Getting a settled rotating trio in defence that bar injuries or a Lundy, could stay in place for 12+ weeks at least

Thanks for this - really interesting. The one I really want to focus is on is getting defence settled as early as possible so that all transfers can go on chasing attacking changes and doubling up on City/Pool attacks during fixture runs.

This is a really good personal target to set ourselves I think. More realistic. It highlights were we really are over five years, not the odd year.

      Mine's 26,315

I'll aim for top 10K next year but realistically if I beat 26,315 that'll be a good personal target I reckon.

Spurs are going to be challenging United and Chelsea for top 4 next season I think...

      Agree with these ticker rankings?

Tier 1: Title Challengers - Man City, Liverpool
Tier 2: Top 4 Challengers - Man Utd, Spurs, Chelsea
Tier 3: Europa League Challengers - Wolves, Leicester, Sheffield, Arsenal, Burnley/Saints
Tier 4: Bottom Half - Other 10 teams
Tier 5: Whipping Boys - TBC...

Torn between Burnley & Saints for that last tier 3 spot...

If Chelsea actually sort out their defence they may be serious title challengers. Man Utd could be one too potentially with some depth signings and 2 more world class players.

Do you see a 95+ point season from Chelsea? That's the level to compete for the title, let alone win.

          Previous winners: 99, 98, 100. Liverpool got 97 and finished 2nd.

I think Chelsea and United should comfortably finish in the top 4 but talk of title challenges is premature.

          - Klopp and Pep are the best in the world, Lampard and Ole nowhere near.
          - They're in the prime of the team's life cycle, Lampard and Ole in year 1.
          - Liverpool are elite defensively, City aren't so far behind given the fact they retain possession. Chelsea and United have average and above average defences respectively.

I'd be excited as a Chelsea/United fan but throwing names in the mix for a title challenge seems premature to me, and will only lead to disappointment from unrealistic expectations.

Both of them are still light years away from City and Liverpool, and as you mention it's not just the players/teams it's the managers too. They need to focus on closing the points gap which is doable, and keep making good signings to keep closing it

Absolutely. They should be ready to pounce once the cycle's come towards the end. I'd be amazed if City and Liverpool don't hit 95+ again - they've taken the PL to a different level with their winning oiled machines. Relentless.

                1. @persecuted_by_mods
                    3 years, 8 months ago

Can't see those cycles ending any time soon either with so many good players and young ones coming through too (Foden, Elliot etc, Pep and Klopp going nowhere and City will spend big as always. Chelsea and United should focus on cementing top 4 without letting a Spurs or Arsenal sneak back in, and focus on their own points totals getting closer to the City and Liverpool totals because I'm with you I fully expect 90+ from them both again. City have technically even had their "blip" this year and still finished well clear of them

Pep is in his last year of his contract and should he not sign, that is a chance for United/Chelsea the season after to get closer.

Fair enough, I see your points. No I don't expect either United or Chelsea to reach 95+, it will be more dependant on Liverpool and City not reaching this level of crazy consistency next season.

Do you think Liverpool will able to replicate this past 2 seasons again for the third time? I don't, City with insane depth that Liverpool don't have (and seems they aren't keen on having) failed to do so and collected 81 points after the 100 and 99.

Chelsea defences is behind that's true and that's why I mentioned they could potentially challenge if they fix that mess at the back along Kepa. United though you say above average defence yet they conceded 3 and 1 more goals than Liverpool and City respectively (stats my be skewed since the restart).

I agree that saying United and Chelsea winning the title next year may be a bit premature or wishful thinking but it won't be out of this world.

This. Might even do the Lloris + Aurier double-up. Mourinho second season is usually a defensive masterclass, especially if he manages to sign the CB of his choice.

Lloris sounds great, Aurier less so as Tanganga will fill in at RB in tough matches like his debut against Liverpool.

Lloris had the highest PPG and save percentage for all goalkeepers, I doubt he'll be cheaper.

I'd put Sheffield United in tier 4 personally. They overperformed this season, and well done to them for doing so, but I think they'll find their second season much more difficult. Burnley too I'd put in the bottom half.

I don't know about Everton - a bit of an enigma for me. Ancelotti will be completely wasted there if they don't back him up with transfers. I couldn't tell you in concrete terms which teams will finish above Sheffield United - just that my hunch is they'll suffer a bit from second-year blues.

Only 1 of the 10 newly promoted teams to finish outside the bottom 8 last decade have failed to improve on either their points total or league position in the 2nd season.

People have been underestimating Sheffield United for the past 4 seasons.

I think they might be dead last if Zaha leaves and they don't sign any attackers of note.

                  He’s class.

Selfishly, I want him to stay one more season. I think one more season in the Championship, where he’s now going to be the main man teams game plan for every week will make him better.

I’m also hoping that if Brentford don’t beat Swansea in the play off semi that one of the Prem boys buy Benharama and leave Eze alone.

Realistically, though, I can’t see us holding onto him this off season. He’ll be a joy to watch in the Prem next season. Glides past players for fun.

Best player we’ve had since Taarabt.

One thing with Wolves from last season.
They only won 2 of their first 11 games, probably due to starting so early in the Europa league.

If they aren't in Europe next season then they could be a serious shout for top 4

Nice! The table before & after Bruno is also suitably interesting:

League table *Before* Bruno came in (all teams 24 games played):

          1. Liverpool 70
          2. Man City 51
          3. Leicester 48
          4. Chelsea 40
          5. Man Utd 34

League table *After* Bruno came in (all teams 14 games played):

          1. Man Utd 32
          2. Man City 30
          3. Liverpool 29
          4. Arsenal 26
          5. Chelsea 26

Goal difference, goals scored, and goals conceded are all even more interesting...

If Man Utd make a good use of this transfer window, they could surprise a lot of folks next year

See also - FPL points since Bruno joined (GW25 onwards)
          - Bruno 117
          - Salah 47 (in games where Mane started - or 84 in total - neither are good!)

Yes, but would it be a fair generalisation to say that you play your second team in Europa and your strongest side in PL, but your strongest side in CL and have to compromise in PL?

There are some horrendous outfits in the CL group stages too though for sure

Plus the intensity of working around 6x CL group games on Tues/Wed's, versus 6 EL group stage games on Thursdays still shouldn't be a the same level as playing the 9 league games in 35 days they've just came through, or the 10 games in a month from Mid-Dec to Mid-Jan etc

Players can still come on after 60 minutes in games, and there's the cup competitions too. Plenty of opportunities to impress.

Ole has said in the past that it's hard to bench a player that's scoring goals. So if Greenwood performs better than Martial/Rashford etc, he'll start over them. Ole is ruthless.

Sure, he'll be brilliant playing twice a week up til Christmas, then burn out. To avoid that his minutes will need to be managed, to the detriment of a FPL owner, I reckon. Obv you sell him once he becomes jaded, but I'd rather get him with the intention of being a long-term keeper.

If this is for the purpose of influencing squads for next season, you've got to factor in the title-in-the-bag factor. I'd start with TAA and not be afraid to dump him if Liverpool hit the beach early again.

Just slightly dubious about MBP’s 117:100 point or the weight he seems to be attaching to it.

Extrapolating from an end of season run would have made Everton defence a slam dunk. And as you say the title in the bag skews all Liverpool data.

Bruno is a great option to be sure but there again Vardy got 140 odd points in half a season. Waiting on fixtures and pricing before I make up my mind

United have a fairly thin squad and we’re yet to see them put a season run in. CL will require full squads and not the fill in players used in Europa

Actually quite like Doherty if fixtures fall kindly and pricing is correct

Everton is bit of a strange comparison as they lost one of the best holding mids in Europe to PSG so were always going to regress defensively 🙂

Vardy also got hit with an act of God around about December in the shape of the baby, followed by injury - he picked right back up where he left off with 51 points from 8 GW's in GW29 - GW35... and remember he was also hit by the lack creativity with Maddison, Chilwell & Pereira missing...

For a 12.5 asset to be so far behind Bruno on points is mental - it allows Bruno to regress by 20-25% & still match/slightly exceed Mo's score from this season (assuming Mo's output doesn't continue to decline, or doesn't massively improve) 🙂

Surely you'd expect the output of most of Liverpool's players (including Salah) to improve when not on the beach?

If they play with the intensity of a team trying to win the title I don't know whether Bruno would have it all his own way in the comparison with Salah. (although tbh Mane is the one I'm most interested in)

Only dipped in and out of Mo so I essentially agree there.

I’m not dissing Bruno in any way. It’s just I can envisage fixture and price combinations which mean I go without. Two premium at the back for instance and KdB Raz in midfield could mean no spot for him

                    Waiting - that’s all

Oh yeah absolutely, if they price him at 15.0, there aren't going to be too many takers for example, no arguments there 🙂

With him only havnig 14 games under his belt i think he's avoiding anything mental in the form of price rises though - 10.0 would be my guess, maybe 10.5 (maybe 9.5 who knows)

Regardless of his price though - his output (the 117) has been jaw dropping compared to Mo's (84) in the same time period - lots of potentially serious implications from gaps like that

Wen you throw in the Mane factor, Salah's 84 drops to 47 which is where a big red siren should be sounding saying "Houston, we have a problem"... 🙂

                  It's also not 117:100

                  It's 117:84 (that's a big gap)

or 117:47 (that's beyond a big gap) if you look at Mo's games when Mane started (i.e. all of them bar three)

Mane's presence can be pretty poisonous to Mo's output generally!

Mo missed GW30 and played less minutes than Bruno since the restart.

So one match explains a 33 point gap? Which would still leave a 12.5m asset only matching a much cheaper alternative?

I'm going to play devil's advocate a bit just because I don't think it's that clear-cut whether Bruno or Salah will be better next year.

                    Last 10 games:

                    Salah: 5.32 xG, 2.15 xA
                    Bruno: 4.58 xG, 2.05 xA

Salah underperformed his xG considerably with his poor finishing, and it's worth noting that this is an exception rather than the rule. In each of his previous 5 seasons, he had outperformed his xG, so it'll be interesting to see if this sample is an aberration or the new norm.

So I wouldn't put spurs in tier 2.
Spurs are like Arsenal in a tier 3 with wolves.
Plus with their Financial difficulties I'm not sure Spurs will be able to strengthen that much.

Leicester with Europe to play will end lower than Tier 3.
Sheff, everton, Burnley can hope to be in the tier 3 but at season start are lower imo.
It will depend of which team has a good season next year and can be added to Wolves-Spurs and Arsenal in that Tier 3

Over the VAR that denied Sheff Utd a goal v Villa? GW30+ wasn't it, where Nyland's arm on the post blocked the goal-line lens/laser of whatever they use.

Someone needs to answer for that goal decision vs. Villa in fairness - that was absolutely ridiculous - terrifying to think that it's just been let go without any real post mortem or follow up? (Maybe there was & I missed it)

In any other business if an error of that magnitude happened, multiple heads would roll, and deservedly so

I game finished 0-0 rather than 1-0 due to a technology error. That one point difference would have put Bournemouth above Villa. It relegated them.

If you change one moment in the game, the rest of the game is different. It doesn't pan out the same. They had 38 chances to survive. Or 37, if you want.

Liverpool are going to be screwed whenever AFCON happens if that's the case.

Mane, Salah and Keita already will miss out. Matip could always come out of retirement too. Add Sarr to the mix and that's very problematic.

The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (also referred to as AFCON 2021 or CAN 2021) is scheduled to be the 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, the biennial international men's football championship of Africa organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The tournament is scheduled to be hosted by Cameroon. The tournament was originally scheduled to be played in June and July 2021, but the CAF announced on 15 January 2020 that due to unfavourable climatic conditions during this period, the tournament would take place between 9 January and 6 February 2021. On 30 June 2020, CAF moved the tournament for the third time to January 2022 following the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I really don't think they will put Rash/Greenwood let alone Auba into midfield.

Just seen on twitter Auba and Mane have more or less identical heatmaps as is to be expected but it's an easier life to keep it as it is maybe.

I think Mane, Salah et al should be forwards personally. It's kind of ridiculous that they get an extra point per goal and clean sheet points.

But if FPL want to be consistent with their classification, they should make Auba a mid. I won't agree with that either, but I would at least applaud the consistency.

I agree - but I still think they won't go through due to the hassle.

Would you move all those that play in a front three - Pulisic, Son, Pepe etc - I think I would.

The likes of Mcneil can stay due to Dycheys 4-4-2

Not sure about Son and Pepe. But Salah, Mane and Sterling are more forwards than wingers for example. They're not the type of player to hug the touchline and put crosses in, and occasionally pop up in the box.

After GW18, he played CF once vs Liverpool.
Before 19, he played 14 at CF. Really depends on if FPL want to use his whole season or just the 2nd half.

If Antonio remains a kid I'd be interest to see how they see how they classify Matheus Pereira of West Brom this summer. Technically a rightwinger/attacking mid, with 8 goals and 20 assists over 42 games. If he's OOP he's straight in my starting 11.

yeah same with martial, sterling etc. cant see it happening though, not enough expensive midfield choice and too many expensive forwards. literally every team will have kdb if that were to happen

It would make for a lot more interesting choices in the forward line though. At the moment it's easy for a team to have Sterling, Martial and one of Salah or Mane. If they're forwards you'd actually have to choose between them.

KDB and Bruno would be in most teams regardless so that wouldn't change anything.

It would change from 'most' teams to 'all teams'! There's got to be sufficient competition of premium midfielders. Mind you, there was a lack of premium strikers this season so some tweaking would bring better balance. But whatever positions are changed are sure to provoke controversy.

That's what I mean - there's got be sufficient competition of premium forwards. At the moment the only choices are a left winger, a false 9 that's allergic to goals, two rotation threats, and a defensive midfielder! (see if you can work out who they are!)

Any player whose primary job is to score goals (and is their team's primary goalscorer), and plays in a front two or three, should be a striker. Salah, Mane, Sterling, Martial at the very least.

Putting Rashford as a midfielder would double down on the current problem. He is a striker through and through.

UCL fantasy always gets this right as I recall.

          It’s simple really.
Just visit the 20 teams official website. If a player is lister as a forward, the FPL should copy it (does not matter where the manager plays him. Managers are replaced anyway)

Curious. What is the view of United fans of AWB a year on?

This time last year I thought both clubs did ok from the deal with Palace perhaps shading it. That take has perhaps hardened. He’s great in defence of course but his attacking limitations are now even more obvious and - still early days - I cant see him developing much that way at all.

Looking around the top defences in the PL he feels like the full back least likely to. Amusingly to me in the Palace match CP were it seemed deliberately leaving him the free man in attack.

This is a good comparison. Look deceptively good defensively because of their tackles, and most of those tackles are made because they're constantly caught out of positions.

I think AWB could be moulded into a decent CB, with correct coaching. But that's be a RCB in a 3.

Akin to Maguire - the price tag is ruined by (A) English player tax and (B) United tax.
Both quality players, near but not quite at the top of their respective positions in the league, that we've overpaid by 15-20 million quid for.

Wan-Bissaka is clearly hugely talented but with gaps in his game.
7 league assists, while not in the territory of the LIV fullbacks, is hardly to be sniffed at.

Great at defending, although even that started getting worse after the season restarted. Attacking wise he has the energy to keep bombing up, when he's up there and can cross he's good enough and can get assists. His key fault is on the ball passing moving and dribbling, I'm not sure if I can think of another fullback in the top half who is as bad on the ball, I can't see him improving too much on that front but maybe it's Ole's lack of tactics combined with the lack of an actual right winger

AWB is quick but that is about it.

I see his situation ending up like Clyne. Did well at Palace and Soton but obviously Liverpool far to much of a step up.

I am a Pool fan and do not know what exactly some LFC fans saw in him. They always raved about Clyne. He was really bad.

The only reason why Brendan Rodgers kept on picking him was because of his pace. Klopp immediately saw the elephant in the room. Clyne was never good enough.

I'm with you, the only caveat to AWB is just how good he is at defending, and potentially could that free up a right ringer to maybe not track back as much but as it stands teams have figured out he's awful on the ball and consistently press him to make mistakes

Very pleased. He's been the most solid defensively in that backline which was much needed. I don't really mind the lack of offensive output if a quality right winger is signed. The problem has been no good RW/RM and a defensive minded RB/RWB.

Personally, I would also prefer if in the games that Ole plays 3-atb, he puts AWB as RCB and Shaw as LWB rather than Shaw as LCB and AWB as RWB. But I guess Brandon Williams played a role in that decision this season.

He's improved our defence and is great in defensive 1v1s, nowhere near good enough going forward and neither is Shaw. Leaving AWB free and letting him have the ball uncontested was also Arteta's tactic when Arsenal beat us.

Depends on how many of the big-hitters are moved to Attackers. Not sure I'll have space for Spurs players that aren't Kane/Son...

Will you have Chelsea assets from the beginning? With them buying so many attacking options is there a chance of heavy rotation like in Manchester City? Also the problem of how quickly players will adjust to the Premier League.

Absolutely yes. Especially if as expected, City and United progress in Europe and thus miss the first few games.

                Pulisic will be popular.

Pulisic, mount ought to play. Werner - now what troubles me is Chelsea's propensity for bringing in foreign strikers with great reputations who flop. I'll need convincing this one's an exception because he ought to be nailed and provided with quality service.

                For me its

                Auba- 3 goals 1 assist in 10
                DCL- 1 goal in 4
                Traore- 2 assists in 8
                Yarnolenko- 1 assist in 6
                Pulisic- 1 assist in 5
                CHO- 3 blanks in 3
                Firmino- 3 blanks in 3
                Tielemens- 3 blanks in 3

Could Danny Ings improve on his goals tally next term? He's fitter and Southampton as a whole a more cohesive unit than first half of season. (I'm only going on results and Ings minutes. Never saw the Southampton matches) And what will Ings price likely be? I'm guessing 7.5-8.

I'd worry his tendency to get injured will return. But he should be fine for a starting squad. One off Golden Boot - possibly 8.5m

                European questions

                1) If Ars win the FA Cup,they play EL next season?
                2) If Wolves win the EL and Che win the FA Cup,both play CL next season, but who (except Lei and Spurs) play EL?

Only 7 clubs can participate from one nation in European competitions. So if there are 5 in the UCL there will be only two in the Europa.

been reading about next years player classifications ,ie salah ,mane ,auba, rashford etc ...

like the nfl lets have offense and defence thats it

defender 4points cleanie 6 points goal and you can include rice, kante, ndidi in this group

                attacker 4 points goal

                everybody 3 points assist

                goalies stay the same

                so squad make up
                2 goalies
                6 defenders
                7 attackers

                systems
                4-6
                5-5
                6-4

tell you what why put that?,unless you are a detective ,i was only thinking aloud ,there are plenty of players unusable in fpl nobody said its a perfect idea ,but it would get rid of the imbalance of salah to say kane ,what would be your plan then poirot?

                  Don’t like it.
Just copy the official website of each team.
Bruno, Pogba and D. James are listed as midfielders.
Rashford, Greenwood and Martial as forwards.
Whether or not you find D. James as an interesting OOP player is up to you

Mane, Salah and Sterling are listed as forwards on official sites. While Mahrez, Bilva and such are midfielders

I'd take that. There will be problems with any classification but this seems to make more sense than the FPL's classification.

If you Google a player's name followed by the word "position" it gives you their position, but no idea what their source is.

Or split midfielders into defensive and offensive midfielders.
Defensive midfielders (Kante/Rice etc) 2 points per clean sheet.
Offensive midfielders (Sterling/Mane etc) 0 points per clean sheet.
Pick any 5 across the 2 categories.

It seems like we have this discussion every year. I would be happy to classify defensive midfielders as defenders. At least then they may be of some value in FPL rather than everyone ignoring them - and thery don't need any change to the structure of the game.

But if defensive midfielders were to become defenders, then they would top the BAPS every time a clean sheet is achieved, since they tackle and pass more balls

He didn't do badly at all last time round. Sure, many people would've liked him to do better but he did score 11 goals, and would've had more if he didn't have Kamara as a team-mate!

                Pope 6
                TAA 7.5
                Robbo 7.5
                VVD 6.5
                Salah 12
                Mane 12
                Firmino 8
                Pulisic 8
                Havertz 7
                Werner 8
                Azpi 6
                Alonso 6.5
                Slabhead 6.5
                Martial 9
                Greenwood 6.5
                Bruno 10.5
                Rashford 9
                KDB 11.5
                Sterling 12.5
                Jesus 11
                Mahrez 9.5
                Son 9
                Kane 11
                Alli 7.5
                Auba 12
                Pepe 4.5 lol
                Saka 5.5
                Nketiah 6
Jimenez 9 (if he stays at Wolves)
                Boly 5
                Docgerty 6.5
                Siass 5
                The Lord 6

Could be a bit generous with Chelsea pricing but still think that is what they will be coming in at.

Interesting to see what price they come in at, preseason hype could play a major role.

Weak defence and Cabellero in goal the factors limiting a title push obviously, but would be good if we can make use of all the possession we get in games now with some proper attacking threats.

My biggest FPL flaw is I jump on Chelsea new signings too early and immediately break them - Pizarro being the one that comes to mind straight away

That being said.... Werner and Havertz play in the Bundesliga (ok so did Pizarro but ignore that) and Ziyech has shown how good he is during the UCL so the step up shouldn't come as a massive shock to them. Sure we've seen some new players take a year or two to settle in, but there are examples of players starting quickly and not slowing as well (Auba for example).

There again, the skill is to have 10 other good players, any of whom could offset a poor Captain performance.

So the skill is limiting stupid transfers and poor line-ups so a captain fail doesn't cause to much damage.

To make it simple for you 1 decision(captaincy) having much more impact than all of your other decisions(transfers, benching etc) isn't fair at all. I hope I am clear about my point this time.

I have already got your point, the captain chip is part of the game so everyone is in the same boat. Yes, it can make a big difference to your total points compared to rivals, all I'm saying is the best players find a way around the problem. I agree there's nothing worse than a casual rival having a rubbish team compared to you and then beating you because your captain gets 2 points and their captain gets 26.

I'm not a fan of the captain chip, it bears to much influence on a 'hail mary'.

Onto basis that you an spread your views across players though, I'd be happier if they kept captain at x2 and maybe VC at x1.5 - make that vice chip count for something.

If your captain doesn't play, then the vice stays vice. A player comes off the bench for your captain, but the double points are lost, just the 1.5 for your vice

                https://fplreview.com/season-review/

For instance, Magnus Carlsen had a projected rank of 4-5k and a luck factor of 99.3%... I had luck factor 40%...

Their luck factor is extrapolated from 3 separate models; xG stats, bookies odds and their own 'Massive Data' model which workings isn't disclosed but that they claim is more accurate than bookie odds. It's not like the number is pulled from the air...

Yes.. there are people beating the bookies at various sports too (like horse racing) but they don't do so because of the eye test but because of heavily stats based approaches. Basically 'outstatting' the bookies

Bookmakers can still make calculated risks (or investments). The odds will just be shorter. Gambling isn't a recent phenomenon that relies on detailed stats.

Don't you find that most prediction engines don't adequately account for the most recent form. And neither could they I guess. Like, RMT always seems overly biased toward long term trends to me. If a team has changed shape and kept 2 clean sheets... or got a key player back from injury... their season trend can be obliterated pretty quickly.

They mean how much less or more points you actually got compared to their data projections for your players for each game week. Of course those projections could be flawed but it's a massive indication of how much luck influences the game when you look at the scores for pretty much every high ranked manager.

To be honest the term 'luck' is loaded and emotive. As La Roja has pointed out, someone with Lateriser's track record is not consistently lucky over the course of one season let alone several.

What this value really does is undermine the dataset - it's how much a skilled player can leverage the underlying odds to obtain the right outcome. It's kind of the opposite of luck, it should really be called something like 'manager value-add'. But that's not as catchy!

I was starting to write a long post about variance and comparing it to games like poker where it's pretty much statistically proven through Monte Carlo simulations that you could be a theoretically winning player skill wise and within reasonable probability still lose over very large samples (hundreds of thousands of tournaments depending on your actual skill edge over your opponents). FPL is very likely the same, and I very much doubt that a 10 season sample is enough to determine that Laterisers track record statistically separates him from someone with say, 50 or 100k average rank over the same 10 seasons.

Humans tend to overestimate skill and underestimate the effects of random variance, especially when assessing people who are doing well and seem to be beating the system.

It’s so similar to poker it’s unbelievable. I do think a 38 game season represents an OK sample of MTTs for example (certainly more than 38), but it’s def possible to experience a massive heater or downswing over 10 seasons.

Yes it's very likely that the 'Legendary' managers are just the outliers who have been favored the most by variance, considering the amount of people playing and the relatively small sample of seasons we have..

Jay eggdonk's horror season last year is a great example.

I have my doubts about this luck % thingy. Haven't delved into it but from what I've seen theres holes in it. Using the RMT on this site, as I've more experience with that, if a player has a points projection of 7 for a single game and you buy that player, and captain, and he scores a hatty, is that deemed as ridiculously lucky since the projection was 7 and the end result is 34?? Bringing in attackers that could score huge and capping them isnt really all that lucky but it smashes the projection. Weird one. Kinda brush it off myself.

Of course you are lucky if someone who statistically scores around 7 points scores 34... The double cap points are factored in so 7 projected would mean 14 projected if capped. If you end up with 34 that's massive overperformance aka luck.

Hmm, seems a bit iffy to me. We bring in players and cap them for good reason. A machine saying they should score 7 is one thing but we managers know that's almost minimum in some cases. Theres nothing unusual about an Aguero or a Salah or an Aubameyang wiping the floor with Fulham or Norwich. This is what were going for. It's not luck at all really is it...its putting yourself in these positions as often as possible and picking up as many hauls as we can.

Of course theres luck from time to time. But these types of "anomalies" to a projection will skew that to bits.

I mean, it’s just not the minimum.

See Sterling, Raheem for the first half of this season.

You are using anecdotal evidence for something that can be effectively modelled statistically.

I did say that in some cases it's almost a minimum. We can never know who scores what before the fact. But we can spot who is likely to haul and when and just go for it. Strategically planning for this is a skill.

Strategically planning who you think will get the most expected points in a gameweek and captaining them is a skill. If you bring aguero in vs villa for a hit and he scores 2 points whilst Kane who you sold smashes in a hat trick, is that skill or luck?

Could easily be a bad decision or an unnecessary risk. Other factors would determine that I suppose.

Same conditions as pre aguero’s 20 point haul vs villa, but this time he gets 2 points and is subbed at 62 mins.

It’s variance. He’ll score 20 some %, 13 some %, 2 some %, etc, etc - all contribute towards his expected points for that week of 7 or w/e it is.

Fair point raised. But what is the fixture for Kane in this hypothetical situation? If it's a highly favorable one them you're arguably running the gauntlet unnecessarily. What I mean is if Aguero vs AVL (h) and Kane vs NOR (h).....playing with fire. But Kane vs MUN (a)..... different kettle of fish altogether. The outcome could be bad luck or a good move depending on a few different factors.

Let’s say he’s home to Southampton, and your other captain options are KDB (also vs villa) or Vardy at home to Norwich.

How does the perception of the move differ if aguero scores 2 vs 20 points?

The only thing separating the two is variance.

In this situation, to me and how I play this game, the transfer is high risk as both have a fixture where they can reach their summit. A haul. Just (c) KDB. Think we're in danger of going round in circles now. The original conversation was about luck % based on a projection for a player. Let's keep the hypothetical situation as is. This site says cap De Bruyne at 7. You bring in Aguero and he smashes. Is this now massively lucky based on their criteria? If he blanks is it unlucky? I just dont think it's as easy as assigning a luck factor when theres so many variables. Perhaps we can agree to disagree. No harm in that.

Luck obviously comes into this game. I've had some unreal moments this year, good and bad. But to say a managers result is 98% jamminess or whatever is a bit unfair.

I don’t think it means 98% of their performance was down to luck, just that they were in the 98th percentile of luck relative to other managers.

Fair enough that comment was an error on my part. But still, is it not essentially suggesting that you need to be one lucky fecker to do well? That can happen, theres always some schmo who cant crack the top million that just has one of those years. But good managers get there regularly and it's not luck. Its skill. If these projections are legit then smashing them season after season is a sign of good play no? Perhaps I'm wildly wrong on all of this and the penny will drop some day. Just seems unfair to say thise doing well are jammy.

I think people can run at a very good expectation year after year, and deservedly make top 10ks etc, but it’s very fragile. You can be the wrong side of variance for 2 seasons and finish 300k twice and your record is ruined.

On the flip side, you can run very well for 3 seasons and get 3 top 200 finishes, and you’d be well above expectation.

It’s clearly impossible to tell the difference between someone that has 4 top 10k finishes deservedly, or 4 top 10k finishes through positive variance - but the longer it continues, the more chance there is that the person is a skilled player.

I think those kind of projections are actually based more on couple of fixtures average... If Salah scores 1, 14, 1, 21, 1, 1, 1 he averages around 7 points per GW and is predicted let's say 7 points next week.... By judging by every one of the GWs you would be either lucky or unlucky every GW. If you transfer premium options in and out there is more chance of "deviation" or so called luck hitting you, if you have one player for the whole season the deviation could be smaller too...

FPL is a high variance game, but expected points are all that really matter in the end.

If you captain aguero vs villa because you expected him to score a hat trick, you’re deluded. If you captained him because you thought he had the highest points expectation, that’s a good decision.

Some people finish regularly inside the top 5k so it can't be that much dependant on luck. Also many factors can contribute to the so called luck factor from that site like for example evaluating player's or team's confidence or motivation which isn't included in the xG models. Imho xG model should also be corrected by player's historical performance, like for example KDB always overperform xG so no wonder really he did it this season too. Their model would say you were "lucky" having him...

Doesn't mean luck isn't playing a part in FPL but I just don't like trying to attribute a certain number to it...

Obviously "luck" can't be measured or calculated 100% correctly but this statistical tool does a decent job of taking all things into consideration

My score is minus 68 for luck, I think this largely comes from early Salah and Sterling captains that were prime good home fixtures playing 90 and they blanked. Ofc you can argue it wasn't luck and I should have gone with someone else too

Arsenal and Spurs' xGC AND xG is bottom half of the table standard. Defence and midfield letting both teams down. Not creating enough, and not defending well. Awful numbers.

But the reason why they didn't finish bottom half was because they had a couple of quality players defying the data. Martinez/Leno & Aubameyang's saved Arsenal, and Lloris & Kane's saved Spurs. Those 5 outperformed the expected stats.

They have to keep those players at all costs!

There's a case for saying both clubs sacked their managers and hired the incumbents mid-season. With transfers and a pre-season, both managers will have a bigger impact and should get more out of their players.

There's a case. I'm not intending to start with a player from either club.

Yep, under Mourinho Spurs' xG goes from 10th to 7th, and their xGC from 11th to 10th. Still not great, but did improve them. Going to have to take back my previous comment about Spurs challenging... 😆

Arsenal's xGC went down under Arteta, and their xG plummeted badly! Not good data for Arteta...

Also, I guess technically their xGC went up, not down.

                                              Down the rankings though! 😀

Which Liverpool defender(s) are in your GW1 team if these are the prices?

                                        TAA 8.0m
                                        Robbo 7.0m

TAA, Robbo and VVD. I'm expecting 7.5, 7.0, 7.0, so same total.

At those prices, Robbo, VVD, but it entirely depends on pricing of other players

                                          Depends on the fixtures.

If they're strong I'd make room for Trent. If they're poor, probably none of them. When it comes to the top teams I want the best options to make the most of the fixtures. Value can be found elsewhere.

In what way does it depend on fixtures? If any club is fixture-proof, we're talking about it! Anyway, I'm intending to keep them for the season, injuries aside.

If Trent had a bad run of City, United, Chelsea within just 6 games, would you really start with him?

If he had average fixtures he'd be the first name in my team, sure, but there's always a limit.

Fixtures make a huge difference to average returns. HUGE.

I actually would. I'd have all 3 nailed in my starting line up. If they had no clean sheets after 4 games or so I'd admit defeat and WC. Given they'd be more expensive than any other defenders, I'd need 2FT to get each one in, realistically meaning waiting to WC. So it's all or nothing, and I'm going for all.

Like you, I would start with him.

Even without a CS he’s capable of getting attacking returns against any of those other teams.

The key for me will be finding good value in the £4.5m bracket next term. Other than TAA/Robbo/VVD, Doherty and Azpilicueta I don’t think I’ll spend more than £4.5 on defenders next season.

Interesting, we got every response from "the maximum possible amount" to "none".

For me, it would probably be TAA plus one other if they start with an above-average run of fixtures. Otherwise TAA only.
