The Promoted

Can Pablo Hernández and Leeds’ attackers offer reliable FPL appeal?

Fantasy Premier League managers may have to wait and see whether a cast-iron attacking asset emerges from Leeds’ ranks in 2020/21.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men certainly have a wealth of talent going forward but in a team where the goals and assists are spread around and the centre-forward is somewhat wasteful, it may be difficult to pin down one key individual to invest in initially.

To get the inside track on this newly-promoted team, we have once again consulted LeedsLive reporter Beren Cross, who has covered the club for the duration of Bielsa’s reign thus far.

You can read more about Leeds’ tactics and their fluid 4-1-4-1 formation HERE, while we have also assessed their defensive potential HERE.

What is Leeds’ goal-scoring potential?

“Brentford are considered a high-scoring, attractive, creative, buccaneering outfit and United only scored three fewer goals all season in the Championship. Naturally, there are always what-ifs about how sides will transition from the second tier and it is impossible for me to accurately predict whether they will score plenty or struggle to do so. It has to be said, United are wasteful. If they tucked away the chances they should have done in 19/20, they would have scored closer to 100 goals than the 77 they ended with. The problem has been finishing and, as the striker, Patrick Bamford has carried the can among many fans.” – Beren Cross

For 95 per cent of the season, United have been faced with deep-lying, defensive set-ups which are happy to camp in their own box and ask the Whites to break them down. That will not be the case in the top flight. Teams will attack United and they have shown, when the opportunity arises, they are deadly on the counter.

This insight from the front-lines carries a specific warning for Fantasy managers to bide their time before investing too heavily in the Leeds attack next season.

While they might benefit from more space to exploit, it does seem evident that Bielsa may have to encourage better finishing among his players. Remember, unlike Norwich, they are not coming into the Premier League armed with a reliable 25+ goal-a-season striker. In this team, the goals are spread around a little bit more, something that Fantasy managers are less keen on.

The Whites’ 77 goals last season was the second-highest in the Championship, just three short of a free-scoring Brentford outfit. A feat not be scoffed at. However, it does represent the first time the title-winner did not also top the scoring charts since Cardiff in 2012/13. That total is also just below the division’s average for the last 10 teams to finish in the top spot.

If we were to feed Leeds’ total of 77 goals into the average percentage decrease of Championship winners in their first top-flight campaign immediately afterwards, we get a figure of 38.1. For some context, that equates to fewer goals than Sheffield United (39) and Bournemouth’s (40) tallies for 2019/20 although one of those teams nearly qualified for Europe and the other was relegated.

How much that counts for does remain to be seen, of course. Norwich went up with the second-highest Championship goal-tally of the last decade but ended up with the worst of any of them in the following Premier League campaign, with a measly total of 26.

A lot will, of course, depend on how other teams set up against Leeds, partly why biding our team seems sensible. As Beren mentioned, there could be more space to exploit for the Whites, but it is too soon to say.

If that were to be the case, away goals could be an area that Leeds look to target. After all, playing teams on their own turf usually opens the door a little more to counter-attacking sides.

Bielsa’s men scored 37 times on the road last season, more than any other side in the Championship and backed up by their ability to hit teams on the break.

They were no slouches at home either, finding the net 40 times at Elland Road, an impressive tally considering how many teams set up with deep lines when travelling to West Yorkshire. Only Brentford and West Bromwich Albion (44 each) scored more times in home matches.

Player-by-player

Pablo Hernández

  • Position: Central attacking midfielder
  • Starts: 27
  • Substitute apps: 9
  • Goals: 9
  • Assists: 9

“Naturally, the obvious asset at first glance is Pablo Hernandez after another Player of the Year triumph with nine goals and nine assists in the title-winning campaign. However, now 35, Hernandez’s minutes have become more and more managed by Marcelo Bielsa. If he is fit and the fixtures are not too congested, the Spaniard will be a very safe and astute selection, depending on his price. However, he did only make 27 starts in a 46-match season last time out.” – Beren Cross

Pablo Hernández has been a much-discussed asset in the Fantasy community since Leeds’ promotion was confirmed but it is interesting to see Beren pour some cold water on any forming bandwagon.

That is not to say the central midfielder won’t be a regular starter but there are still a few ‘ifs’ to consider ahead of the new season.

There are lots of things to like about the former Swansea man, considering his perfect balance of goal threat and creativity.

Last season, his total of 74 shots was bested only by three other players while only two colleagues managed to produce more goal attempts in the penalty area than him (38). Those numbers are especially impressive when you consider that Hernández played just 2,502 minutes in 2019/20, 10 Leeds players spending more time on the pitch than that on the way to the title.

For that reason, Hernández’s 82 key passes and 13 big chances also indicate how productive he can be when handed minutes considering only Jack Harrison managed more in each department than that.

However, the ‘ifs’ begin with set-plays, which Hernández does not have much of a monopoly over compared to the architect of other teams. In 2019/20 it was defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips who took the bulk of these, firing in 227 corners to Hernández’s 51 while Harrison was also responsible for a further 44.

The former Swansea man did take five direct free-kicks on the way to the title but, again, it was Phillips who assumed the responsibility most often with a total of nine.

The defensive midfielder does have special set-play pedigree but one of the reasons why Hernández cannot quite compete with him for them is as a result of the aforementioned management of minutes.

The Spaniard picked up a knock ahead of the first Project Restart fixture against Cardiff which meant he only started twice during the final nine matches of the campaign, his more advanced central role often handed to Tyler Roberts during this period.

Hernández emerged as a substitute on six occasions following his return to fitness, replacing Roberts in all but one of these, so there is not necessarily any suggestion he is set to lose his place to the Welsh international any time soon.

But the way the 35-year-old finished 2019/20 is certainly an indication of the factors Fantasy managers must be aware of as it meant he contributed to just 23.4% of Leeds Championship goals.

Because of these considerations, it is hard to describe Hernández as quite as much of a talisman as a Grealish or the like, the sort of player you can be confident will start every single match without fail. That surety will be there if he’s fit and the fixture schedule is kind but, at this stage, neither one of those is completely guaranteed.

Five players registered more assists than him in the Championship, including West Bromwich Albion’s key man Matheus Pereira.

Jack Harrison

  • Position: Winger
  • Starts: 45
  • Substitute apps: 1
  • Goals: 6
  • Assists: 8

“Jack Harrison is worth investigating. Heading into his third consecutive year-long spell at Elland Road, Harrison is on an upward curve and improved massively in his second campaign under Bielsa. He delivered six goals and eight assists from out wide and, barring injury, will almost certainly start every week.” – Beren Cross

Fantasy managers could consider the more advanced attacking asset in Harrison, who largely finds himself stationed on the left-wing.

Much like what we saw with Luke Ayling and Stuart Dallas, Harrison is the more assured starter who offers slightly less according to the underlying statistics.

That is not to suggest the Manchester City loanee is a bad option. As already mentioned above, Harrison finished 2019/20 top of the charts for key passes (87) and big chances created (17) among Leeds players.

He was also the best of the rest for efforts on goal outside of centre-forward Bamford, registering a total of 78 shots, 61 in the box and 16 big chances, second-best in each of those categories.

However, Harrison shoulders some responsibility for Leeds’ wastefulness in front of goal last season. Despite lofty ranks for the volume of shots, four Leeds players managed more shots on target than 23-year-old.

Mateusz Klich

  • Position: Central midfielder
  • Starts: 45
  • Substitute apps: 0
  • Goals: 6
  • Assists: 5

“Mateusz Klich is another who is likely to start every match. The Pole’s streak of 92 consecutive league starts was ended by Bielsa in the penultimate match of 19/20 after some exuberant celebrations. Klich delivered six goals, five assists and might be on penalties next term.” – Beren Cross

Klich’s importance to the team is also in his favour considering he is a solid contributor to Leeds’ attacks.

Bamford, Harrison and Dallas are the only team-mates to have shot more times en route to Championship glory than the Polish international (76).

Most of Klich’s efforts came from outside of the penalty area (52.6%) but he was still in the top three Leeds players for shots on target (24).

He was also third for key passes (79) and big chances created (11).

On top of that, Klich took three penalties in 2019/20, the same number as Bamford, assuming responsibility for the only one Leeds were awarded post-lockdown, hence why he is the current favourite.

Patrick Bamford

  • Position: Striker
  • Starts: 43
  • Substitute apps: 2
  • Goals: 16
  • Assists: 2

It perhaps says something about Leeds’ array of attacking options that we come to their centre-forward so late in the list.

While Bamford had a hand in the joint-highest number of goals this season, his total of 18 attacking returns, level with Hernández, still only counts for 23.4% of Leeds overall tally.

He is also the chief culprit when it comes to assessing the chances the Whites failed to score on their way to the Championship title.

His tally of 128 shots in the box was the highest of any player in the division and yet Bamford still finished the 2019/20 campaign 10 goals shy of the Championship’s joint-top scorers in Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ollie Watkins (both 26). He was also 13 goals shy of the previous season’s Golden Boot winner Teemu Pukki, who netted 29 times in the Championship.

In total, the centre-forward was afforded 44 big chances but he only put 10 of those away, spurning the other 34 (77.3%).

For some context, the five worst Premier League players for big chances missed in 2019/20 were Diogo Jota (12), Jay Rodriguez (12), Michail Antonio (14), David McGoldrick (15) and Roberto Firmino (20). Those players, admittedly played a shorter campaign, but only six matches, while Bamford was playing in the best team in the division.

If Bamford is to truly cut it in the top-flight and offer Fantasy managers a reliable stream of attacking returns, some improvement in this area is sorely needed. Up to this point, he has scored just one Premier League goal in 27 appearances at that level.

It is no secret that Leeds need some competition for Bamford but the former Middlesbrough man will surely be handed first dibs at leading the line in the Premier League based on Bielsa’s management style.

“Bielsa only tends to change the team for suspensions and injuries, even during poor runs of form. They are so fit, fatigue is rarely an issue. The aforementioned Bamford would go 10 matches without a goal in the Championship and not be dropped, much to many fans’ dismay. However, Bielsa is loyal and his players run through brick walls for him.” – Beren Cross

Other options

An important member of the team, Kalvin Phillips offers more than the usual defensive midfielder considering that he takes Leeds’ corners and free-kicks. This, of course, is another detraction from Hernández’s credentials and may only count for Fantasy appeal if Phillips comes in kindly priced.

Helder Costa is another relatively secure starter for the new season, traditionally operating on the right-hand side of midfield. While he is the opposite number to Harrison, the former Wolves man did not quite match his colleague’s attacking returns totals for 2019/20, scoring four goals and assisting another four, the same as right-back Luke Ayling, with whom he usually shares a flank.

As already mentioned, Tyler Roberts was the central midfielder who played when Hernandez needed his game-time managed. In 1,086 minutes he managed four goals and one assist, although that still only works out at an attacking return every 217.2 minutes.

Ezgjan Alioski registered five goals and three assists from 2,253 minutes which is solid if not spectacular. However, his role across the campaign was one of impact substitute, 21 of his 39 appearances coming from the start and 18 from the bench.

The difference in Newcastle pre and post their formation switch in GW28 is crazy big. After switching from the 343 to the 4231 both their offensive and defensive stats improve massively. They had tough fixtures those 11 games too so the huge improvement is even more impressive.

Could be some bargains to find there next season...

AVL could also be decent option for cheap defs, they were quite tight after restart (or even slightly earlier?). We probably need to find some bargains to afford big hitters. Dunk at 5.0 is bit meh imo, but depends on fixtures.

They tightened up a little bit yeah, and their attack was stunted as a result.

But even with the improvement, Villa's defence was still one of the worst in the league. I'm expecting them to go down season tbh unless they have a good window...

Puzzled by this analysis if you look at actual results. Post restart they had a mix of fixtures - actually more friendly than not imo. Are you concentrating on team XG here? That's one metric I really distrust. The results were like this:

Liverpool City Spurs the tough ones

      For - 2
      Against - 11

      Other very decent ones were
Brighton Watford WH Villa all in serious relegation bother or close

      For - 4
      Against - 5

      Two big results

Others were Bournemouth in their really rubbish phase and SU as the one outlying result as a 3-0

      For - 7
      Against -1

Whatever the change in stats may indicate the results fell almost entirely into line with expectations imo. There'll always be a couple of outliers in a run of 9/10 matches. Perhaps I'm not looking closely enough but whenever I have looked at team XG it has misled. For instance United were iirc for a good while stat leaders in defence earlyish but were a horrible play consistently

Put another way the stats may have changed but I can't see anything unexpected in results at all and they fell pretty much exactly in line with what would have been predicted from pre-restart. Does that suggest the underlying stats are misleading?

If he’s not it’ll be by his own volition I’d say (he was a bit critical of the suits support of the team recently)

But he’s building something pretty good there - getting a much better tune out of Kaku & Young than any of the Utd managers were able to

Lautaro Martinez, Skriniar, DeVries, Handanovic - the new right wing back they’ve got from Dortmund etc

Eriksen is taking his time to settle but if he clicks they’ll win it I’d say

I see what you're trying to say but you could argue the same for 4th and 6th stature Bundesliga teams and below being the same for Pool/City. I think when people use the term "mickey mouse league", it's concerning the boring nature of them due to the same winners most seasons. There's no competition.

I guess depends on your definition of "Mickey Mouse league" - I find it disrespectful and for someone who's watching fair bit of German football I simply dont agree.
Good league with great clubs and amazing noisy fans.
Bayern is and always been above the rest (FC Hollywood) but clubs like BVB, Bayer or currently Lipsk are giving them run for their money.

That's fair. I've not really watched it myself. Just know that the lack of real challenge for Bayern is off-putting and doesn't excite football fans abroad. Same problem with Serie A and Ligue 1. I do appreciate that there are quality teams there though and I know the fans are great.

Yeah, I can see City and Liverpool both whipping the 4th and 6th Bundesliga teams. City and Liverpool are capable of giving Bayern a good game too imo. But those are just opinions.

The last time a Bundesliga team was in a Champion's League final was in the 12/13 season, 7 years ago. Whereas 3/4 teams in the last two finals alone were from the Premier League. A lot more money is coming into the Premier League, so it's hardly a surprise we're starting to see them be more successful in Europe.

Bundesliga still a quality league though, with exciting end to end games.

They should beat PSG on Wednesday night but Athletico will have too much for them in the semi final. Prob be a Bayern Atletico final. Athletico to shackle Lewandowski, and use their streetsmarts to win.

Actually yes. Willian is still in his prime but being treated like a has been by Chelsea, that could prove a bad decision.
Coutinho is quality. Just because he couldn't live up to a €190m price tag or whatever ridiculous amount barca paid for him, does not mean he isn't still the same quality player, he is. Cutting ties with Barca and coming back to the prem, especially with Willian and other quality players around him, that's a perfect fresh start for him. Not sure about fpl appeal, but he could do wonders for arsenal, especially if they lose Ceballos.

you certainly should not. At the very least these 2 should appease Auba, you're right. If your transfer window is Willian, Coutinho, Ceballos & Partey IN. Laca, Guendouzi, Torreira OUT... Then you've had a great window imo (still needing a CB though, but what's new, Arsenal fans have been crying out for a better CB for about 12 seasons now lol)

Really curious to see whether we'll see a rush of transfers before season start or the chain reaction will be more in October when we get to the deadline. Bit of both perhaps.

The late deadline is one reason why I'll be looking for solutions for avoiding early WC from DGWs.

      1. Amey

It's overrated tbh. Nothing changes drastically IMHO.

I'd take 30 points with early WC over late transfers in window.

Best clubs do transfers early enough too except for ... you know .. 🙂

          Fair point

Just anxious that if I don't wait I'll miss getting all 3 Villa and Palace essentials at best value 🙂

Agreed that you typically want assets who are settled in and not newbies. But - overcautious here perhaps - transfers work two ways. Players get transferred/loaned out too. How irritating will it be when your fodder gets sent to Turkey on loan for the season 🙂

            He's a fodder for a reason 😉
We know generally who's in the first team mix early enough.

I'm only saying i Don't want to hold on to WC for transfer window sake. If we can make our way past the blanks and double at the start, maybe holding on WC can be a masterstroke

The transfer window thing is an afterthought really

It may well be impossible to pull off but I really like the idea of Delayed WC. It would theoretically be in conjunction with early BB

Idea is to invert the traditional WC to BB structure to go BB WC. It’d work in principle by treating GW1 squad as WC to hit early DGW in 2 or 3.

It’s irritating and potentially non optimal to play a WC to get 15 in when you only want 13 or so going forward - you’re diluting the most powerful chip in the game.

Having used BB in Sgw last season for a whopping total of 5 points & getting blasted by other BB players in GW 30 (starting of decline for my season) I'm going to play safe. (Unless i reach another cup final that is 😉 )

Theoretically did very nicely from BB last time - until that is I take into account the weeks that followed BB - I gave back the gains pretty quickly.

Really dangerous chip imo - the risk (avoidable of course) is to focus on the week you play it in and forget the effect it will have in subsequent weeks. Brighton in 18/19 a classic I guess.

Treating it now exactly as TC - a nothing sort of lucker chip that can gain you 20 or so points extra when played luckily. But remembering that I can lose or gain 20 points in any given week when Vardy misses a pen or Pope makes a pen save in double defence!

        They should pay the money
And they should of done the business already. I love your suggestions of sarr/ndidi but at this late date you’re paying premium for those.
The problem with United is that they present themselves willing and desperate early and solely focused on one signing. Maguire took two windows ; Bruno two also and both rose in price as we didn’t close a gap on city/pool.
The pandemic discount idea is plain silly to Dortmund who have been a staple of the champions league and can afford to keep him ; and develop a great side.
I don’t want United to only get one player for a premium amount but they didn’t have to. Quiet negotiations during restart (see Werner, havertz) would have seen a price difference. Woodward irritates clubs and this a tug of war happens.
So in conclusion I can only see one incoming

        1. Amey

Only one incoming would be Sancho. If not him i can see United getting 2/3 signings done.
Fact that United are being bullied in transfer market & glazer's want to end this to spend more money out of their pockets makes me wonder whether United will still sign Sancho for suggested amount.

United's policy is to develop transfers for 3 players in each of the positions that have been targeted.

Sancho is No.1 for that RE spot, there'll be two others they're working on in case that falls through

Maybe we should start signing players with buy out clauses 😀

I don’t see any at a good price (cheer than Ake who isn’t close to world Class himself)

GK would be last signing if it's done. It's just done to sell articles/papers.

OGS did say that United are 2/3 signings away from competing for title (not saying I'm in agreement with that), it show's he must have identified those positions to strengthen.

But United can't back off now. Have to back OGS in market !

        Sensible thoughts.

But for United Sancho just isn't a world class player he's also a way to earn loads of money with shirt sales etc which will be unlikely with any other low key signing. United also will want to monetize that No 7 shirt asap.

You can understand United's temptations to sign Sancho for sure.

That being said, with good negotiation and identification of targets, United could sign a world class talent CB and a very good FWD for the price of Sancho.

That way, United could aim to concede 10 goals less and score 10 goals more - the points swing is potentially 15+.

For example, I think 100m (maybe plus sales) could get you a combo of Gimenez, Koulibaly, Hernandez, Akanji + Sarr, Bailey, Jimenez, Coman, O.Dembele, Vinicius

That wouldn't completely destroy the wage structure either.

Chip strategy thought. My favourite move last season was TM taking a minus 16 on BB.

Really great lateral thinking imo. BB can be a 3rd WC in disguise - all you need to do is accept you can get a 20 point swing in any given GW and it’s not worth wasting a chip to get one in a designated week and crucially a WC is worth more over a run of games.

Slight danger of course that the -16 remains -16 after BB but hey ho 🙂

          🙂

Some risk to this strategy already noted. Just checked he got 5 transfers in for a minus 6. Tough to get only 1 point from Egan Taylor - but you can get that luck using BB in any week.

Taking a -16 for BB can look good in a vacuum but in the end it's a result of poor long term planning if you make a move like that

Well WC & BB next week is the safest way to PLAN a good BB.

If you're saying you WC in GW 30 & playing BB in 35 and 3 player's in the team gets injured that has nothing to do with planning. That's plain bad luck.

WC & BB is boring/safe/traditional/template whatever you call but it's only way you can safely plan for a sure shot BB IMO.

I find it difficult to get out of that BB team (bench to be specific) after GW. Keeping too much value on bench is boring

Even if 3 players get injured that's a -8 to fix, not a -16, and in all my time playing I have never had more than 2 players get injured/suspended in the same game week. 3+ injuries is incredibly unlikely

True about 3 injuries I guess

The thought I’m working from is different though - not fixing an injury crisis - or not necessarily.

The thought is a well played 5 man WC has a bigger likely upside than a well played BB. You’re looking at a strategic gain over several weeks rather than a 20-25 point boost in one.

Will there come a time midseason when you’d really like a change of direction? Perhaps, perhaps not.

          Reasonable point

Don’t imagine he’d be going there again - all chip strategy post restart was thrown out by lack of DGWs mind

Still tantalised by the thought of using BB as WC. It would be more effective - or likely to be effective - when not played in 36 with just 2 more weeks to play.

Even he won't defend his move IMO.
I'd rather play in a sgw with whatever i have than that (mind you that's how i used to play before two seasons back. Didn't know hits cost points. LOL 😀 )
I did -20 ish in 2 seasons back i Guess where Kane disappointed me. If you remember Swansea were supposed to have 2 easy home games but suddenly the tables turned & fixtures changed. I never knew this Hits thing tbh. So used to make 2/3 transfers anyway every GW. But that GW i did 5/6 transfers i guess.

          Ok here’s the scenario

You play an earlyish WC and you’re planning on a late WC for DGW season

Around week 20 a team sets on fire and another team dives. You can see 5 likely looking transfers that could be very good midterm. You use BB to get an advantage that could very easily be worth much more than a putative plus 20 in one week

This is hardly a reach as a scenario. Just theorising of course

General point I’m making is that there can be 3 separate times when a WC looks desirable and BB is theoretically a way into it. Risk attached and dim view of value of BB required (see our discussion above)

I'm not expert at anything. And even if anyone says he's an expert in Sgw BB, don't trust him. Those cheap players are cheap for a reason.

I have learned this over last two seasons: © & chips aren't a thing to punt.

Differential attackers maybe worth the punt. I'm becoming boring player i guess 😀

Agree on C but any one week chip is a punt even if it’s a DGW. FH TC and BB are all remarkably chancy. WC is the one chip that has strategic value and can help strategic players. Connection there to be made 🙂

But why does it matter which week you do it in? You could say that spreading across multiple weeks as long as it nets out.

So then comes down to what you’re using the hits for - are you strengthening the bench for the BB (presumably not as it defeats the point of the ‘false WC’) or strengthening your main squad (if so per above you’re taking the hits anyway and it doesn’t actually matter which week you play your BB to Try and make up for it).

              1. pingissimus
                • 5 Years

You have a point you could do it asynchronously but then you take the position you’re going to accept an instant massive ranking fall due to hits.

Also there’s a discussion further up on difficulty of BB. BB can not just be a damp squib it can backfire and be positively dangerous. For me it’s a chip to get out of the way rather than use strategically and influence transfers.

Very standard strategy in normal season is WC to instant BB - I’m questioning that slightly as BB perhaps tends to overinfluence (for me) the WC selection. If you decide that you’re not committed to late DGW BB it at least opens up the possibility of using it to pay for transfers sometime else.

Not saying I will go down this route by any means - just saying I’d consider it if circs fell right. Preseason theorising from someone who hasn’t yet pencilled in TAA as he could well blank week one,

Can anyone breakdown the idea that the Manchester clubs maybe others may miss GW 1 or 2 or both. And what other clubs also might miss out.
This would be a headache for the premierleague Going forward.
Would they not make that the GW 1 fixture instead to ensure other teams don’t miss out. The derby GW1 (rearranged for example)

If United & Wolves reach Semis they both will miss GW1. Only one of them can reach the Final and whoever does will mist the first 2 gameweeks.

If City reach the Semis they will miss GW1 and if they reach they Final they will mist GW1&2.

I think PL is waiting to release fixtures to see how the cup runs goes for those 3 tbh.

They can easily make it a long GW (like winter beak if you remember) GW 27 i guess ....

It's lots of guesswork and speculation at the moment, it's been reported that Chelsea will also miss GW1 for example because the international break before GW1 means that they can't have 30 days rest and play preseason friendlies. We also don't know if the PL are going to apply the 30 days rest rule to all clubs, or when GW2 is going to be, if it's midweek more GW's will be lost by those still in the CL or EL.

      3. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

        Basically looks like:

        - Team Makes it to Final: Assuming GW3 is Saturday 26th then they miss GW's 1 & 2

i.e. 30 days from 21st Aug (Europa League Final) is Sunday 20th September... and from 23rd Aug (Champs Lge Final) is Tuesday 22nd September

        - Team Makes it to Semi-Final: Assuming GW2 is Saturday 19th then they miss GW 1

i.e. Semi finals are 16/17th for Europa & 18/19th for CL - which is 15/16/17/18 September after applying 30 day rest periods - would allow them play GW2 (19th Septemeber) & only miss GW1

Going out at Quarter Final stages means they would make GW1 I think

There's International fixtures the week before GW1 - so presumably all players from clubs involved in Europe are unavailable for selection for those... It would kind of contradict the whole 30 days rest logic if they were required to go on International Duty 2 weeks after the Euro Club competitions finish for example!

You'd think Sheff Utd having a bid for Ramsdale rejected means they know that Henderson returning is unlikely, I think he has other suitors that he'd prefer to move to (Chelsea) if he doesn't stay with us.

Chelsea would be a very likely move. Why would they go for a 2nd world record transfer for a keeper when they can get Hendo on loan. But alternatively Ole could keep him on the basis that if DDG screws up just once, Hendo is in.

Apparently Henderson either wants to stay as number one or a permanent move away, no more loans. I had the same thought as you and I hope he can be convinced with that, there's no way we'll promise him number one immediately.

I don’t think Laca has much to do with Auba not playing in the middle. Laca was on the bench plenty of times since Arteta took over and Nketiah started in the middle instead, not Auba.

It seems like Arteta just prefers him to play as LW rather than CF.

Dallas is the best option if he's a 4.5m defender of the lot by my reckoning. He had the 3rd or 4th most shots of any Leeds player and plays extremely high up the pitch. He's like Leeds' left-sided Doherty.

When I saw Leeds win the championship I thought, Great, I'll be taking 3 of their players (As I've always loved the promoted teams for good cheap options) but after doing some research I'm not sure I'll start any.....
It's like their squad is too even. Their star attacking midfielder is 35 and limited minutes, their defensive midfielder takes their set pieces, they don't seem to score loads of goals or that tight defensively.

Also, I have a feeling because they're champions and glory days of late 90's, early 00's are still fresh in our minds, the brains at FPL are gonna price them a tad high.

I will consider a fullback if priced $4.5m (like they should with comparable stats to Sheffield's wing backs) but I just have the feeling they will be $5.0m, which will be a no-go zone for me given that Aurier was priced at that last year.

West Brom & Fulham just seem to me to have 1 really good stand out option

        GK: Fabianski
        DF: Dunk
        MF: Richarlison
        FW: Ings

GK - Fabianski (please be 4.5m), if not, McCarthy.
        Def - Dallas
        Mid - Pereira
        Fwd - Antonio

I think Antonio will be underpriced somehow. If he comes in at less than 8.0, he's absolutely worth it. He took the last pen, his xG stats are overwhelmingly good and when fit he's a bulldozer.

The break has given me chance to reflect on my decision making process across the last FPL season. Taking a glance at my season history a few big occasions where I’ve made the wrong choice for the wrong reasons have really torpedoed my chances of a decent finish.

For example, using the TC chip on Mané that fateful DGW, instead of Salah, proved a real turning point. In my gut I had a hunch that Salah was the better pick - “he’s bound to get a penalty at least”, I thought. But after spending too much time engrossed in various opinion platforms, and worrying about what ‘everyone else’ was doing, I was swayed.

With this in mind, I’m looking to really overhaul my decision making process in FPL terms for the coming year. Here are some thoughts on an initial framework to follow...

      1) Digest your preferred FPL data. Watch full games, check highlights, dive into the stats.

      2) Follow your gut. After checking the data, what moves are you leaning towards? Model the changes (or non-changes) in your team and see how you feel about it.

      3) Let it sit. Leaves it a day or so, then come back to your team. Still got that happy feeling in your stomach? Set your mind on the decision.

      4) Consult the community. With your considered decision in mind, now’s the chance to engage effectively with the community for the first time this GW. Watch a few vids from trusted sources, ask a question or two on the forums. Don’t ask broad “what can I do with my team this week” questions, instead ask more targeted questions with your particular move (or non-move) in mind.

      5) Decide. Nothing revolutionary come up in your dalliances with the community? No glaring piece of evidence you’ve missed? Trust those initial gut feelings otherwise. Whether you have a good GW or bad GW, at least your fate will be in your own hands.

Essentially, I’m thinking about something like the Match of the Day challenge but with community opinions! It’s felt a bit like information overload this season whenever I’ve dipped into the FPL opinion-sphere without first doing due diligence myself.

Anyone else have any thoughts on decision-making in FPL going forwards? Does anyone have a loose framework they like to keep in mind?

I'm not going to do any of that. I'm going to just make moves I like and boast inordinately when they work, and stay quiet as a mouse when they don't.

I always try to get two positive changes for my team with FT. Sell a player I really don’t like anymore and buy a player I love. If the FT is just one of those changes, stop and think.

1st half of the season will be strategy based which I have already put together. Once we reach the 2nd half of the season I will see where I am in the ranks and adjust from there. Obviously strategies are difficult to keep to but if you have planned it properly then much better chance of it working.

My GW1 team will be to maximise my 1st team meaning no 4.0's or 4.5's in my starting 11. Bench as cheap as possible. All comes down to pricing and player availability.

Avoid hits at all costs and wheel and deal with budget bandwagons to increase TV.

Leave WC as late as possible, avoid hype of DGW's and use BB and FH when I can see my rank is taking a dive.

Just some of the things I will do differently compared to last season.

As humans we always remember our failures more than our successes. There are plenty of times when you were talked out of captaining Pepe based on logic rather than gut instinct. Your gut was so sure he was gonna come good this week and yet by listening to logic you did better.

It's all rubbish. Trust the data, make informed choices and take it on the chin when it doesn't work.

I captained Mane in GW24 because having weighed the data, it seemed a coin toss and wanted a differential. I had good reasons for trusting Mane, and did some in-depth members area work and his underlying stats were no worse than Salah. I can't control for an injury. If Salah was the one who got injured instead and Mane went onto score 15+ points I'm not a genius either. It's just a decision I made with the choices I had in front of me.

Sometimes the game will swing against you and sometimes for you. It's just how it works. Keep making the most logical, informed decisions. Stop making wild 'gut instinct' punts and you'll do better over the season.

Some of what you've said makes sense, although I can't help feel that points 2 and 4 are a bit contradictory.

Whilst I value the input from the site, I'm aiming to be more independent in my decision making next season. No-one makes top 10k by following the herd.

Check the season history of managers who "advise" you and tread carefully.

          Ask less questions.

Avail of articles, members area, YT content and figure it out for yourself. It's more fun that way and

For me the RMT tool and season ticker are great, as well as the odd player comparison. That's all i use and its still worth the membership fee. Articles too of course.

Price dependent, how many premium mids are you aiming to start the season with?

Guessing the majority will have 3 to allow for sufficient funds in other areas. I have a feeling that pricing will be quite harsh next season.

I'll have either 3 or 4 provided I can make it work with enough left over for TAA, etc.

Yeah 4 would be a stretch if you're talking Salah, KDB Sterling, etc. More likely that the 4th will be in the 7-8 price range with a cheapie in 5th position. Ritchie or Soucek could be good 5th options.

LFC defence is a gold mine for points. Only thing is having 3 players without a cleanie when they concede but attacking returns makes up for it.

Probably 2 real premiums and then one around 9.0-9.5.

                Something like:

                4.5 (4.0)
                Premium Premium Premium 4.5 (4.0)
                Premium Premium 9.0 6.5 (4.5)
                8.0 6.0 (4.5)

If three premium defenders aren't affordable, then downgrade one of them.

Hey all! Haven't played for 8 or 9 years. Looking to get back into the game. Just bought a membership. Question about the stats tables in the members section - is there a way to get "My Tables" to display the Stats per 90 minutes, rather than the players' totals over the season? I feel like I'm seeing misleading stats because they aren't corrected for the amount of time the player has played. Thanks!

I’m almost certain there will be flicking between the assets in midfield if both Aubameyang and Rashford (potentially sancho and havertz) join an already stacked roster (for example it’s hard to put in Son for a streaky month) if everyone is on form. I think there’s absolutely no chance Besides DW that I have two United or Liverpool mids knowing that they should be 10m plus the ones you want. I think I might use risk and go for secondary options and it could look like this early
                1. Mane-de Bruyne-ziyech-Rashford-
                2. Salah-sterling-pulisic-son
                3. Mane-auba-havertz-Mahrez

With a last spot starting 8m under chosen by early fixtures (Pepe, jota, saka, greenwood**, Traore, st maximin etc)

The idea is that it’s expensive but injury forgiven they are interchangeable but if the money is managed right that formation allows for

                Cheap defence x1 premium
Say ings - richalison (martinelli) as forwards

Saints or arsenal double keepers set and forget if cheap

I can't see myself risking Mahrez as a long term option, he's too unpredictably in and out.

I don’t expect sheff Utd to be as solid defensively this year but are they likely to bid for ramsdale again ?
That was a bit left field for me ; as if they’ve been told about Henderson’s status for this year already.
I open the question as I think there’s a chance (small) de gea will be 5m
Henderson 5m but ramsdale if he was the only sheff united keeper would he be 5m also ? I don’t hold interest in starting with any of these but that Merry-go-round is interesting if both united’s are good defenders this year

Ramsdale 5.0 at SU - if that's what he'd be - would tempt me early fixtures providing.

I can see SU regressing but not massively. A dip in cs could be balanced by increase in saves possibly? He's shown that he has a high save potential in any event and can save a pen too.

If Hendo stays at Sheff U, he'd be 5m, but in addition, the Blades' backline would be decent assets. Without Hendo, I'll swerve clear of all Blades - to start with, anyway.

I’d be all over SU Ramsdale at 4.5 - slightly got pooh poohed when I suggested that price on here.

Less convinced by some it’s Hendo per se - I’m seeing decent keeper decent defence good price with a possible Ramsdale there

I am waiting for Lloris price. If he was fully fit all season he might very well have been leading the saves department when looking at stats and definetely would have had more clean sheets compared to what he ended on being injured.

Most PPG as well from all GK's other than McGovern who only played 2 matches. 5.5m may be to expensive to start off with having a 100m budget but almost 5 ppg for a GK at that price is pretty damn good. Can't see Pope being less than 5.5 but may end up at Chelsea. Pope's clean sheets and bonus will regress.

Lloris should be bang on 5.5. Pope (either at Burnley or Chelsea) same price.

I will almost certainly go for Lloris whether he's 5.5 or 5.0 unless Meslier is by some miracle priced 4.0.

4.7 PPG with 6 CS in 21 are excellent numbers, and I expect clean sheets to only improve seeing Spurs improvement after the restart, the signing of a recognized DM, and the Mourinho second season effect. Also stylistically similar to De Gea - world class shot-stopper, difficulty playing out of defense - and we all know how amazing his season was in 16/17. Jose sets up his team - to use a crude comparision - like a world class Burnley, allowing shots when they sit deep and ignoring the play out of defense strategy, which suits Lloris's skillset very well. 170+ points is my prediction.

Hmmm Meslier could he start every game week
I can see him fighting all season if Leeds are conceding
But if he is a sure thing I think 4m is great business
Remember we won’t (Fpl pricing) won’t see pre season to evaluate
Everyone will be looking for cheap cheat codes like lundstram

If Ramsdale goes to Sheff Utd I'd expect him to be 4.5. His PL form last season was far inferior to Hendo.

I am probably somewhere in the middle when it comes to casual versus serious FPL player, I take an interest but don't pore over stats etc.

I was considering Fulham's Rodak as my 2nd keeper when the game starts (part as loyalty to my team, and because no-one else appeals that much at all!)

I came across a quite in depth post about our defence in the past season and his effect on it, may be of use to some-

I would be all over Coutinho at Arsenal at 7.5-8m.

He wont be that cheap and even then Suarez and Sterling dont play for Arsenal.

If Arsenal make those proposed signings Auba could be in for am amazing season

Alli, how much will he be at?

Still a respectable 4.7ppg, same amount as Willian with less minutes. Alli will most likely be cheaper compared to this past season. 7 or 7.5 could end up great value if the likes of Willian get hiked.
