FPL relaunches for 2020/21 as Gameweek deadlines move back half an hour

Fantasy Premier League has reopened for 2020/21, four weeks ahead of the new campaign.

There are no obvious rule changes from last season, with the chips and Wildcards remaining as they are.

However, the main development is the moving of the Gameweek deadlines from 60 to 90 minutes before kick-off – evidently to combat the team leaks from previous seasons.

With the relaunch of the game also comes the remaining player prices, following the drip-feed on social media yesterday.

We’ll be sharing our initial thoughts below, while you can also join Mark, Joe and David on a reaction video:

GOALKEEPERS

→ Which team has allowed the fewest number of big chances this season (41)?
Most expensive
  • Alisson – £6.0m
  • Ederson – £6.0m
  • David de Gea – £5.5m
  • Rui Patricio – £5.5m
  • Dean Henderson – £5.5m
  • Hugo Lloris – £5.5m
  • Nick Pope – £5.5m
  • Kasper Schmeichel – £5.5m

As last season, Alisson and Ederson (both £6.0m) are the most expensive goalkeepers.

Nick Pope and Dean Henderson are two of six shot-stoppers available at £5.5m, meanwhile.

Chelsea’s defensives woes of last season sees Kepa Arrizabalaga move down to £5.0m, along with Jordan Pickford.

It’ll be interesting to see who gets the nod between the posts for Arsenal, with Emiliano Martinez (£4.5m) – who impressed in the run-in – half a million cheaper than Bernd Leno (£5.0m).

The goalkeepers from the newly promoted clubs all come in at £4.5m, along with Mathew Ryan and Alex McCarthy.

DEFENDERS

Most expensive
  • Trent Alexander-Arnold – £7.5m
  • Andrew Robertson – £7.0m
  • Virgil van Dijk – £6.5m
  • Marcos Alonso – £6.0m
  • Cesar Azpilicueta – £6.0m
  • Lucas Digne – £6.0m
  • Ricardo Pereira – £6.0m
  • Kyle Walker – £6.0m
  • Benjamin Mendy – £6.0m
  • Aymeric Laporte – £6.0m
  • Matt Doherty – £6.0m

Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s price was revealed on Twitter earlier today, with the Liverpool right-back the most expensive defender in the game at £7.5m.

His teammates, Andrew Robertson and Virgil van Dijk, can be snapped up for £7.0m and £6.5m respectively.

No other FPL defender costs more than £6.0m, with Matt Doherty among the cluster of options available at this price.

Joe Gomez‘s starting price remains at £5.5m and he is joined at that price point by Sheffield United wing-backs George Baldock and Enda Stevens and Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Reece James catches the eye at £5.0m, while Luke Ayling and Stuart Dallas of newly promoted Leeds United have been attractively priced up at £4.5m.

With Jonny (£5.5m) expected to be sidelined for a lengthy period, Ruben Vinagre (£4.5m) could be one to watch in the budget bracket.

Neco Williams, Nathan Ferguson and Ben Johnson are among the £4.0m bench fodder options, meanwhile.

MIDFIELDERS

using-the-top-10000-ownership-to-increase-your-fpl-rank-andys-article 9
Most expensive
  • Mohamed Salah – £12.0m
  • Sadio Mané – £12.0m
  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – £12.0m
  • Raheem Sterling – £11.5m
  • Kevin de Bruyne – £11.5m
  • Bruno Fernandes – £10.5m
  • Marcus Rashford – £9.5m
  • Son Heung-min – £9.0m

There are two major additions to the premium midfield pool in 2020/21, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m) and Marcus Rashford (£9.5m) having been reclassified.

Aubameyang is the joint-most-expensive player in the game along with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, with Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne half a million cheaper at £11.5m.

Rashford is a million less than Bruno Fernandes (£10.5m), while Mason Greenwood (£7.5m) has also been reclassified and rises £3.0m after his excellent end to 2019/20.

Christian Pulisic (£8.5m) and Hakim Ziyech (£8.0m) look appealing at the lower end of the premium market, while Dele Alli (£8.0m) is the cheapest he has been since 2015/16.

Phil Foden will set FPL managers back £6.5m, with a reclassified Diogo Jota also at that price point.

John Lundstram is now a £5.5m midfielder, the same price as Allan Saint-Maximin.

FORWARDS

 1
Most expensive
  • Sergio Aguero – £10.5m
  • Harry Kane – £10.5m
  • Jamie Vardy – £10.0m
  • Roberto Firmino – £9.5m
  • Gabriel Jesus – £9.5m
  • Timo Werner – £9.5m
  • Anthony Martial – £9.0m

It’s been a while since we didn’t have a single FPL forward costing more than £10.5m but that is the case this season.

Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane have both dropped to £10.5m, just half a million more than Jamie Vardy (£10.0m)

Chelsea new boy Timo Werner is priced up £9.5m, while Anthony Martial is reclassified as a £9.0m forward.

Also changing position is Michail Antonio, who really stands out at £6.5m.

Danny Ings and Raul Jimenez both cost £8.5m, while newly promoted Aleksandar Mitrovic should be a regular starter at £6.0m.

There are currently only four £4.5m forwards, with Keinan Davis among that number.

FPL making us really consider the high end defenders by undervaluing defenders across the board

So much value in the 4.5-5.5 range

Game is asking the existential FPL question whether you as a player compare TAA to his defender peers (expensive) or to attacking players (cheaper)

    1. DantheManinaPan
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Logically he clearly should be compared only to defenders, but humans are terrible at understanding things logically.

Someone mentioned a clever way to see this recently.

Imagine we played the game, but every single defender's price was increased by 4.0, and our overall budget was increased by 20.0.

This game is EXACTLY the same as the current one, even though defenders are all more expensive!

      2. Klaren
        • 6 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

It’s not as simple though because unless you are already playing with 5 at the back, you could always play more defenders and fewer mids/forwards so comparison to them is also relevant.

Of course not. The selection is much more nuanced. I do think at a baseline, how you look at TAA and how you look at the value in defenders tends to shape how you adjust your formation. This has always been true but FPL have typically stuck more to relative pricing than a pricing scheme that makes more defenders attractive. Last year with prices like those of Pereira, Alonso, Doherty, all the city back line you had players who relatively speaking deserved to be close to TAA in a value sense which was reflected in their price. However, none of those players were season keepers (perhaps with the exception of Doherty though I wouldn’t say he was reliable in the first half). Those players are still in the game but it seems like the gap between TAA’s price and theirs has widened and that there’s an incredible pool of players beneath 6.0, making a 5-ATB genuinely viable.

He always finishes like that and never starts good.

Last season was kind of an exception with the brace in the opening game but he was playing against the worst defence and didn’t keep scoring after that.

Gameweek deadlines have now moved to 90 minutes before kick off of the first match of the gameweek.

This should eliminate any advantages gained from ‘in the know’ accounts leaking team news.

Thoughts? Levelling the playing field or hindering those who do the most research?

Agreed - TFF have been doing it right up until kick-off for years. It makes the game more enjoyable imo.

If anything the old deadline was a hindrance for those who did in depth research. It spoonfed people who happened to be free at a given time an advantage, without them having to actually think at all. It takes no skill to be on ffscout or twitter in the 15min before deadline.

Would’ve preferred the deadline being kick off like with the Champions League version of the game.

I live in Boston in the US and I typically set my alarm for 6:15am each Saturday to check the news. I guess I will still try to check it at 5:45am!

Defence already pretty much sorted for me...

    TAA/Gomez/Vinagre/Dallas/KWP

Could even downgrade Gomez but some real value there!

All these teams with united and city assets are going to be back to the drawing board when the fixtures come out...

Without fixtures everyone will be. It’s all well and good picking Salah over Sterling (For example) but if the fixture computer spews out Liverpool v Man City in GW1 then neither play.

Agreed. Here is my first effort without Utd and City.......

      Ryan (Button)
      TAA Bellerin Aurier (Vinagre Branthwaite)
      Salah Auba Tielemans Soucek (Stephens)
      Kane Jiminez Mitrovic

Will WC when Utd and City players are back.........
