How to play FanTeam’s €1m Premier League Fantasy Game – A Beginner’s Guide

Sponsored by FanTeam

Fantasy Football Scout are again joining forces with FanTeam, Europe’s biggest daily Fantasy sports platform, for the 2020/21 season.

An astonishing – and guaranteed – €1m is on offer in their season-long Premier League Fantasy game, with €200,000 going to the winner.

There is no catch here, only a €25 entry fee – a payment you’ll make up just by finishing in the top 5,659.

Given that only 75,000 entries are permitted, the odds are favourable for those who know their stuff.

On top of that, there are also prizes handed out to Fantasy managers who perform well on a weekly and monthly basis.

So how do you play FanTeam’s game?

Our guide below has all you need to know to get started.

WHAT ARE THE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES TO FPL?

Here’s the great news: anyone with any sort of Fantasy Premier League experience should be able to pick up FanTeam’s game without issue.

The rules, scoring and prices are very similar to FPL, so skills – and indeed squads – are easily transferable.

It’s essentially FPL but with huge cash prizes. Given that paid entry mini-leagues are now strongly discouraged by the Premier League, the FanTeam game offers Fantasy managers a legitimate opportunity to make money from their management expertise.

As in FPL, managers build a squad of 15 players that includes two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders and three forwards.

A maximum of three players from a single Premier League team can be selected, with the budget for the initial squad set at 100.0m.

A starting XI is then selected for each Gameweek from that squad of 15.

One free transfer is allowed each Gameweek, with each additional transfer costing minus four points. Managers can roll a Gameweek transfer forward but can never have more than two free transfers in their locker.

FanTeam managers have two Wildcards to use, one for each half of the season. Unlimited free transfers can be used when the Wildcard is deployed and also ahead of Gameweek 1.

A captain (and vice-captain) has to be nominated every week; that player will score double points if they are handed the armband.

How to play FanTeam's €1m Premier League Fantasy game - a beginner's guide

All sound very familiar? That’s because the two games are largely the same – although there are a handful of differences to watch out for.

KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FANTEAM AND FPL
  • Player prices can rise and fall based on form and in-game transfer movement but, unlike in FPL, a player’s ‘sell price’ is the same as their ‘buy price’.
  • Other than the two aforementioned Wildcards, there aren’t any chips in FanTeam.
  • More than one team is allowed per person, with each entry costing €25.

HOW DO PLAYERS SCORE POINTS?

Seasoned FPL managers should have no problem in adjusting to FanTeam and running a squad with its familiar scoring system, which is shown above.

KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FANTEAM AND FPL
  • There is no Bonus Points System, which is replaced by plus/minus points if a team is winning/losing during the period a player is on the pitch.
  • Goalkeepers get 0.5 points for every save made, unlike the one point awarded in FPL for increments of three stops.
  • Committing a foul that leads to a free-kick goal or converted penalty is penalised by minus two points.
  • Midfielders and forwards get an extra point for completing the full match.
Win a share of €1m as FanTeam and Fantasy Football Scout join forces

We’ll be back over the coming weeks with a series of articles on FanTeam’s million-euro cash game, delving deeper into the player prices, fixture list and strategy.

Until then, head over to FanTeam and start tinkering with your team. As is the case in FPL, unlimited transfers are allowed before Gameweek 1 and the player prices don’t change until the season is underway.

    McCarthy Nyland

Any Fulham fans here can shed light on Neeskens Kebano?
Scored 5 in 800 mins since restart, started loads of games towards the end, including 2 whoscored MoTM performances and all thr playoff off game, but didnt play much before that. Looks interesting on paper but didnt actually see him play last season. Is he an FPL option?

I think he's one to watch and not one to start with. Three of his goals were free kicks (scored 3 in a row) but he might be a slight rotation threat. But for 5m could be worth a punt. Another to watch is Onomah. After restart he played just behind the striker and was really on form, looked an absolute handful. However that was with Mitrovic out so his position might be slightly affected by him being back in the side.

    Hodgson on Ferguson (4.0)

“We are congratulating ourselves on having signed a top-class young player who, we think, is the right way forward for us and a player who, even from the offset, will be a real candidate for a place in the starting 11.

Hmmm. Licking my lips right now. If Ward is not fit for opening gw Ferguson could start from the very go and cement his position if he plays well.

Is Mitchell nailed while PVA is out?

Sounds like there is a doubt over Ferguson still ("real candidate for a place" is encouraging but still doesn't scream "nailed")

          Nope

"He’s still recovering from injury, so he wouldn’t have been able to join in training even had we wanted him to"

Perhaps significant omission here from the same interview a month ago on 25 July. This was a talk to welcome him to the club - not recent. Still more cautious than optimistic.

Nobody can give a good answer without knowing your team. I'll run through the pros and cons though

      Werner
+Brilliant stats, amazing striker, has a fantastic system around him with plenty of creativity. 9.5 looks underpriced, could hit 20+!
-Needs to adapt to the PL - a full preseason helps - and to playing as a lone striker in Lampard's 4-3-3. Also apparently not as lethal against deep defenses, which is the reason Bayern avoided him and he struggled for Germany. Watch the friendlies closely.

      Ziyech
+World class creative stats, you can see a full article here on this site. On set pieces, extremely selfish from long range. Also looks underpriced and could have a Bruno-esque impact on Chelsea's offense.
      - There aren't many, but I've heard that he can take it easy in matches. Also more of an assister than a goalscorer. But I don't see any real downsides to him.

Basically Werner seems to have the higher points potential with a lot of explosiveness, whereas Ziyech is the kind of player you set and forget, enjoying the returns along the way.

Wow, thanks for the long reply mate!
        Really informative.

        Here is my current team:

        Ryan
        TAA Vinagre Ayling
        KDB Salah Bruno Ziyech Soucek
        Martial Mitro

        Button Taylor Davis Ferguson

        Cheers!

Don't really do RMTs as everyone has their own opinion but your team looks fine enough. It's not what I'd do but per the template it looks decent. I'd consider digging up .5 and moving Martial to Werner if the fixtures are great for Chelsea though.

    3. LangerznMash
      • 7 Years

I think they are both under-priced and borderline essential if you look at their statistics.
Ziyech won't be far off KdB and Bruno.
Werner will score similar to what Auba has the last two seasons.
Both of those statements are based on articles on here.... I've got both as I think the pair will total around 400 points for only £17.5m

Son only didn't because of the two red cards.

My take is Werner is the safer option - Ziyech only really works if Werner works while Werner can still function nicely as CF even if Ziyech doesn't reproduce stats as per Pepe

This. And I would like to highlight that Ziyech Eredivisie's statistics may not translate into PL statistics . Recently here was published article about Ziyech but unfortunately did not present IMHO the most important comparison between Ziyech numbers and player, who went in oposite direction from PL to Eredivisie, which means Tadić. Tadić numbers are similar or even better than Ziyech's. I don't remember when last time any import from Eredivisie had a real impact in PL. Jahanbakhsh was a star there and has not produce anything in PL. So Werner for me

          Suarez?
He showed the can do it in the Champions League (5 goals 8 assists in 17 apps) and his recent international record is also good.

Hard to compare Tadic who was the standout player in a very poor Saints side, with Ziyech going into a new attacking Chelsea side.

Playing with Shane Long and Gabbiadini is a bit different to playing with Pulisic and Werner.

In other words, you downgraded Taa to a 4.5 that is in must teams anyway, and updated a mid to premiums. That not enough in my book for being differential. And the ones you choose both have high ownership, depending and which template you take

Getting four heavy hitters in midfield is quite a feat. No TAA is a bit risky though. My team is very similar atm but instead of Auba I have TAA and Robbo in defense.

I think my strategy this year is going to be a bit different.

In over 10 years of playing this game, I have wildcarded without fail by wk3, often wk2 just to jump on bandwagons / transfer out deadwood before the price changes kick in. With this in mind, why bother spending hours tinkering on the "perfect" lineup. What Im going to do this year, is set up my WK1 team like a free hit team - fill it full of short term options based on Wk1-3 fixtures and use the bench boost chip straight out the gates.

nice. I wildcarded in wk 2 this past season as well. Was last minute decision the evening before the deadline.

It'll be difficult to get 15 starters to make your bench boost worthwhile. They've also got to be reliable points scorers. That'll be very hard with the price structure this season. You'll likely lose points from your first 11 just to accommodate a bench of starters.

I’m sorry but the irony is too strong to resist. Huge banner articles on this site advertising gambling whilst the FPL Terms and conditions strictly forbid this in leagues and have been pointed out in great detail last week. Should this site not be more judicious in its advertising partners?

I understand this has been discussed previously but I do think the update T&Cs should have some impact on what this site chooses to partner with.

PL is saturated with gambling money. How many betting companies do you see on shirts in PL?

I can understand if you wanna hold ffs to a higher standard. But loyalty to FPL / PL shouldn’t imply no gambling .

So if it’s not a big deal why did the FPL have this rule?

        12. Players (and Players on behalf of others and organisations) can establish mini-leagues in accordance with the Game Rules. The Premier League does not permit Players charging for entry to mini-leagues they have created, strongly encourages Players not to join such leagues and cannot be held responsible for their management or any loss suffered through Players’ involvement in such leagues. The Premier League reserves the right to suspend and delete Registrations of Players that charge entry to mini-leagues they have created

If that rule (which I strongly disagree with) is actually enforced then sites like this will need all the sponsorship money they can get because money & traffic will dry up rapidly. £15 or so for membership is a decent investment when you're playing for a few hundred in mini-leagues. But simply to finish 30k instead of 50k? Not so much.

The point is you can’t have it both ways ie be fully aware of the FPL rules on gambling and be a main proponent for the game saying 1 million pounds if you gamble 25 pounds .I would be interested to hear a moderator / site administrator reasoning for the inconsistency.

Sorry but I don’t see how the two are related. FFS is a different company and they are free to post about other fantasy games and have no legal obligation towards FPL. Even if they did, the T&C is very specific to running of money leagues.

By your logic, Sky and BT shouldn’t run betting ads either.

No that’s apples and oranges you are comparing. The PL encourages gambling and allows it. FPL doesn’t

        1. Klaren

FPL is owned by PL. So what you are saying is they encourage gambling with their main company and discourage it on one of their platforms. How is that any different to FFS promoting in a different fantasy game and not encoraging gambling when it comes to FPL?

You are missing the point. This site is built 99% around FPL that doesn’t allow and actively discourages gambling. Correct? If this site is 99% built on FPL content should they not be also actively discouraging gambling?

            1. Klaren
              • 6 Years
              3 years, 7 months ago

I don’t think they should because they promote it only on the remaining 1%, which is independent from the FPL content. Also as pointed out by the approach of their parent company, FPL doesn’t stand against gambling in general, it is a specific point about gambling associated with their leagues.

Let’s just agree to disagree on this.

I'm not sure you realise FanTeam is not FPL, it's a different game under a different brand just like Sky FF or any others. You say apples and oranges yet try to apply FPL's rules to FanTeam even though they have no relation?

Not to be overly sensitive I do indeed understand the difference. The point is if the FPL is actively discouraging mini cash leagues regardless of who fan team are and there gambling cops go the FPL game that is entirely legal is it morally correct for this site to encourage this legal gambling. I’m also aware people all have bills to pay which is why they are advertising it (maybe)

Probably mixing up two different concepts here - fraud & gambling - across two different entities - FPL & FFS

When it comes to cash mini-leagues - it's the potential for fraud & mis-management that FPL want to disassociate themselves from

When it comes to gambling - neither FPL nor FFS have any problems with legal gambling & both companies endorse that fact quite publicly

That’s a more nuanced way of viewing it however discouraging money leagues vs actively banning them makes it more definitive than previous.

Isn't simply a case that FFS covers lots of different fantasy games (FPL, Sky, FanTeam) but with a heavy leaning toward FPL so they are just showing whats out there.
IMO, i think FPL are throwing up the no gambling thing to cover their backs in case someone runs a dodgy league and steals all the entry money.
I don't see how they would be able to enforce it other than people reporting leagues they are in themselves.
Maybe it will cut down on the "big" money leagues ran by websites but leagues amongst friends or colleagues will likely continue as before

No one related to Leeds wants anything to do with Casilla.

Dubious about Duffy and Bryan - think better to be had as 4.5 or just one of them and get Tierney and 4.5

      What Pingissimus said.

Not a fan of the keepers - get a 4.5m in Ryan, McCarthy, Meslier and a 4.0.

That defense is also fairly poor. You have a lot of better 4.5ms to choose. Take 3 of: Vinagre, Saliba, Ayling, Taylor, KWP, Justin/Thomas.

That should allow you to upgrade Leko > Soucek. And you'll need the upgrade because that player will be starting.

Obviously things will change when we get the fixtures- but this a great overall spine to the team

    Ryan / 4.0
    TAA / Vinagre / Taylor (4.0,4.0)
    Salah / KDB / Fernandes / Maddison / Mount
    Jiminez / Mitrovic (4.5)

Will come down to fixture (who plays the strong defensive teams) for which premium mid gets dropped.
Without fixtures my logic is Salah gets dropped for three reasons; 1) Already have Liverpool cover in TAA 2) He is on the decline lol 3) Mane has been sharing his points.
