How to play FanTeam’s €1m Premier League Fantasy Game – A Beginner’s Guide

Sponsored by FanTeam

Fantasy Football Scout are again joining forces with FanTeam, Europe’s biggest daily Fantasy sports platform, for the 2020/21 season.

An astonishing – and guaranteed – €1m is on offer in their season-long Premier League Fantasy game, with €200,000 going to the winner.

There is no catch here, only a €25 entry fee – a payment you’ll make up just by finishing in the top 5,659.

Given that only 75,000 entries are permitted, the odds are favourable for those who know their stuff.

On top of that, there are also prizes handed out to Fantasy managers who perform well on a weekly and monthly basis.

So how do you play FanTeam’s game?

Our guide below has all you need to know to get started.

WHAT ARE THE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES TO FPL?

Here’s the great news: anyone with any sort of Fantasy Premier League experience should be able to pick up FanTeam’s game without issue.

The rules, scoring and prices are very similar to FPL, so skills – and indeed squads – are easily transferable.

It’s essentially FPL but with huge cash prizes. Given that paid entry mini-leagues are now strongly discouraged by the Premier League, the FanTeam game offers Fantasy managers a legitimate opportunity to make money from their management expertise.

As in FPL, managers build a squad of 15 players that includes two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders and three forwards.

A maximum of three players from a single Premier League team can be selected, with the budget for the initial squad set at 100.0m.

A starting XI is then selected for each Gameweek from that squad of 15.

One free transfer is allowed each Gameweek, with each additional transfer costing minus four points. Managers can roll a Gameweek transfer forward but can never have more than two free transfers in their locker.

FanTeam managers have two Wildcards to use, one for each half of the season. Unlimited free transfers can be used when the Wildcard is deployed and also ahead of Gameweek 1.

A captain (and vice-captain) has to be nominated every week; that player will score double points if they are handed the armband.

How to play FanTeam's €1m Premier League Fantasy game - a beginner's guide

All sound very familiar? That’s because the two games are largely the same – although there are a handful of differences to watch out for.

KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FANTEAM AND FPL
  • Player prices can rise and fall based on form and in-game transfer movement but, unlike in FPL, a player’s ‘sell price’ is the same as their ‘buy price’.
  • Other than the two aforementioned Wildcards, there aren’t any chips in FanTeam.
  • More than one team is allowed per person, with each entry costing €25.

HOW DO PLAYERS SCORE POINTS?

Seasoned FPL managers should have no problem in adjusting to FanTeam and running a squad with its familiar scoring system, which is shown above.

KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FANTEAM AND FPL
  • There is no Bonus Points System, which is replaced by plus/minus points if a team is winning/losing during the period a player is on the pitch.
  • Goalkeepers get 0.5 points for every save made, unlike the one point awarded in FPL for increments of three stops.
  • Committing a foul that leads to a free-kick goal or converted penalty is penalised by minus two points.
  • Midfielders and forwards get an extra point for completing the full match.
Win a share of €1m as FanTeam and Fantasy Football Scout join forces

We’ll be back over the coming weeks with a series of articles on FanTeam’s million-euro cash game, delving deeper into the player prices, fixture list and strategy.

Until then, head over to FanTeam and start tinkering with your team. As is the case in FPL, unlimited transfers are allowed before Gameweek 1 and the player prices don’t change until the season is underway.

Looks like you can't play Fan team in Ireland. Doesn't give you Ireland as a choice in the country drop down tab.

I have the same trouble (I'm a Brit in Indonesia). I asked them in an email and they said i could register in the UK

"Please be informed that you may register under the UK, but keep in mind that you have to provide us with your ID or DL (it would be better) in order to be verified."

    RMT:

    Ryan / 4.0
    TAA / Vinagre / Taylor (4.0,4.0)
    Salah / KDB / Fernandes / Maddison / Mount
    Jiminez / Mitrovic (4.5)

Don't like it at all. Effectively 3 non playing subs , Mount who won't start every game , better value players than Maddison and a weak defence.
Make a team when you have fixtures to go on.

You can get a midfield of Salah, KdB, Fernandes, Greenwood if you're determined which I think might be ideal.

A for me. Bruno. ASM is a great value pick imo.
Ziyech could be great but there with a few new players at Chelsea they could take time to settle/gel so that’s a wait and see for me. Teams with Greenwood in May need rethinking by the time transfer business is complete.

Nah. I never do. Just be mindful of price points. Avoid having teams that look like: 12.0, 12.0, 12.0, 5.0. 5.0 and you can have some ability to jump on upcoming bandwagons.

I saved money in the bank for weeks in the last two years. It served me well. I did well in those weeks and when it was time to make player changes, I was able to do it with ease not taking hits. This season I don't see being able to but if you do and happy with the team you are starting out with, go for it.

Looks like I missed this last night about the Manchester teams missing GW1:

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2020/08/17/manchester-united-manchester-city-miss-opening-premier-league/

That could shake things up a little bit. Currently have two (Rashford & Sterling) in my team, would I be bold enough to bench them for the first game or waste a transfer early on?

    Any gunners around?

Auba @12 vs Willian @8! Is Auba really worth 4 mil extra?

I basically have 3 slots - 2 mids and a forward which I think I'll be interchanging throughout the season. 27.5m. The brilliant thing is, I can double up on basically any team with these 3 slots so I'm already very happy with flexibility.

I have Salah and KdB nailed on and then I can do:

    Chelsea: Werner, Pulisic/Ziyech, Rashford
    City: Sterling, Foden, Werner
    United: Fernandes, Greenwood, Martial
    Arsenal: Aubameyang, Son, Nketiah
    Spurs: Kane, Son, Ziyech
    Pool: Mane, Antonio, Son

    Mix: Sterling, Rashford, Antonio
    Mix 2: Fernandes, Greenwood, Werner

That's all of them. I can get an attacking double up with every team and still have great options to fill in. Once the fixtures come in, I'll just attacking double on the team that looks best and I'm all set!

    Core:

    4.5 4.0
    TAA 4.5 4.5 4.5 4.0
    Salah KdB Soucek XX XX
    Mitrovic 4.5 XX

I’ve done exactly the same. The first thing I’m going to do as my TV increases, however, is upgrade the 6.0 forward anchor to 6.5 so I’m not limited to Mitrovic/Ayew/Adams. I find this part of the structure annoying.

There's also McBurnie and Kean. I think Kean might be the dark horse here. Ancelotti says he'll play more and he started the last game of the season over DCL. I think if he has a strong pre-season, Kean could actually come good...

I know it’s hard to pick a team with no fixtures, but can I get advice on this draft. Have I spent to much in defence and not enough up to or have I got a good balance ?

    Ryan
Ake TAA Wan B Dunk (if he goes Chelsea)
    Salah Ziyech Fernandes KDB Lallana
    Mitrovic

    Subs:
    Button, Taylor, Davies, Wickham

      Really don't recommend 1 forward, 0 flexibility.

You can save a bunch of money in defense by downgrading Ake and Dunk to playing 4.5s.

Lallana for 6.5m is probably one of the most overpriced players in the game. He has a history of injury as well. Would prefer Foden at 6.5m but maybe better to get an extra 0.5m to get Grealish, Mount or downgrade to 5.5 where you have ASM, Harrison, Armstrong, Klich as options.

    2. Shatner's Bassoon

Probably too much in D yeah. Downgrade AWB,Ake and maybe also Lallana -> Soucek and you could fund a much better 2nd striker in a 3-5-2.

Because PPG wise, he's still among the best players in the game. I would not rule him out yet. We'll see how Mourinho's Spurs look with a full preseason. He could be great but I won't be starting with him that's for sure. At 9.0m he can greatly overperform that price if things click.

Mourinho being a 'defensive' manager is so overblown. He scored a record number of goals with Real Madrid a few seasons back. Mourinho is a manager who focuses on results. If that means parking the bus, if that means attacking, if that means playing a compact team with very few shots, that's what he'll do. With a (mostly) full pre-season behind them, and some nice warmup games for reserves in the Europa League, I'm very keen to see how Spurs do. They may surprise this season.

Hardly seeing Doherty in any teams. For 6m, he's the second name on my teamsheet after Trent. I understand about Vinagre but at 4.5m he can be used as a great 1st sub or a double up. As we know premium defenders are brilliant value source of points, just really surprised people like Doherty (and him in particular) are being overlooked given what they offer.

      !00% agreed

That run from 24/5 on is enough to have him in almost come what may for me. Any player who could can return 6ppg over a long run of games has to be serious contender especially when they're also 0.5 underpriced.

Not many teams are heavy in defense. I do think Doherty is overrated though. 6.0m is really premium price.

And Doherty occasionally gets injured/benched/rotated due to the demanding nature of his position. He only played 2836/3420 minutes. Vinagre also covers Wolves defense right now for 4.5m.

I don't think that means he'll be rotated less sadly. His position is extremely demanding and the schedule is tight regardless of Europe.

He’s been consistent last 2 season, averaging 155pts a season. Plays as a wing back, so essentially a mid.

I don’t think you’ll find a mid for £6m that will outscore him

I can envisage a few people suddenly looking at their 4.5m defences in the cold light of day when GW1 is active and kicking themselves for not at least starting with a couple premiums, be it Doherty, double Pool or whatever. Just feels a bit to me like everything we've learned about defence last 2 or 3 years is being overlooked because there's some potentially half decent 4.5s.

If you plan up doubling up, yes he is still a good option but for those who don’t, Vinagre is too good an alternative to miss out on for 4.5. While he doesn’t have the same level of attacking threat, Vinagre tends to do very well with bps.

You might want to check that assumption

Vinagre is a good 4th defender option. Doherty is a set and forget

I think you might want to check Vinagre if you don’t think he is a good set and forget 3rd or 4th defender option.

I’m fully aware Jonny is due to undergo surgery on his ACL and Bibagre will start. But he doesn’t offer half as much goal threat as Doherty.

For that reason, Doherty is nailed in my team and Vibagre will offer a good 4th/5th defender to double up on wolves when cleansheets look a good possibility

I said it’s fine to double up anyway. But Doherty doesn’t offer as much attacking threat to justify additional 1.5. Traore limits his attacking runs, he overperformed his underlying stats with assists post restart.

If likely template is TAA and 4.5s or Double premium Liverpool is Tierney at 5.5 the most likely template buster if Arsenal start well and he fires.

Tricky to fit him right now. Downgrade from a misfiring Doherty Robbo looks most plausible route not wasting transfers. Gomez could become Tierney if you start him

TAA + 3 x £4.5m (rotation of 3 from 4) looks great though and enables an extra premium mid.

      Would rather Aurier than Tierney

But I think 5.5 is a good price point with Aurier, Tierney, AWB, possibly Ake all great potential options once form and fixtures reveal themselves

I see ASM/Armstrong and Soucek in many RMTs

Good options, in their own right. My problem with them is that this is a new season, where we don't know how the game will START off, and what bandwagons will emerge. Playing the price points (was it Joe?) gives you a problem with these guys because a 5.5 or 5.0m mid is pretty impossible for a direct switch without downgrading elsewhere, especially since there aren't other 5.5m or 5.0m slots expected to do well in midfield or ST. This means a switch to a defender... Or just pick and stick with your 5.0 or 5.5m mid until a wildcard? I think they'll work out with patience or perfect transfer timing, but I'm not sure either of those is as easy as a 6.5m attack price point

Still, if one or both end up being the new Fraser or early-season McGinn or 4.5m Kane, you'd have hit gold as the masses will flood in enough to give you a price rise that can afford an upgrade later if form drops. So, I think it works well if it does work, but don't really see an exit strategy from them if it doesn't

Maybe it's just my GW1 Locadia punt of last season ringing personal warning bells, but I know the 5.5 mids and Soucek are different because they have the stats and starts to back their inclusion, so I expect both of them to do better than Locadia's GW3/5 transfer to another club while in my starting XI 😐

Also, about exit strategy: look at the price points in your starting XI. If you want to upgrade a 5.0/5.5m mid, you're selling a premium... Except if you shift that 1.0/1.5m into defence and get a 4.5m benched mid. But if you were the type to consider shifting it into defence, you wouldn't have a 5.0/5.5m mid

Haven't read your whole post but you've got ASM and McGinn to switch to for Armstrong. Not to bad.

At that price they really are just playing enablers - doubt anyone is really expecting regular returns

I think you're a bit overly concerned here.

Soucek at 5.0m has no direct replacement, true. But he's also only 0.5m more than absolute fodder. So worst case scenario, he's a dud and sits on the bench.

The 5.5m slot is decent because you have options to jump to. You have ASM, Harrison, Klich, Armstrong, Saka all who could get off to strong starts, and most likely at least one will so you can move.

Last season, your Locadia pick was particularly poor because there was not comparable value at the 5.5m slot. That isn't the case this season.

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years

The other 5.5s are also very dependent on things going right more often than they might go wrong. Last season, there were other 5.5m starting strikers by GW1, and I was sure I could switch to whichever of the promoted strikers at 5.5m. This didn't happen. It just simply refused to happen, as any form of
attacking form early in the season started at 6.5m

Will this certainly happen again this season? No. The unproven 5.5m mids just might start off well and make that slot very viable. I'm just saying it looks less likely to happen than the expectation I see here, but I might be wrong

5.0m: Soucek or nought. Explains itself there, but can end up on the bench. The issue I have with benching Soucek is that his goals aren't fixture dependent, as they come from set pieces and happen against literally anybody in the league. This is a lot less reliable than rotating 4.5m defenders for clean sheet potential. For Soucek, I think you set-and-forget him as an enabler, but my problem is that he takes a 6.5m attack or 4.5m rotating defence slot in your team. Works with patience, I'm sure

If any of these guys start off brilliantly, my point is gone and I'll move my 6.5m attack slot to them... Just like what happened with Fraser

So many good options at 5-5.5 though so easy swap

They are neither so good nor so many, and they were all around last season but were quite unpredictable. Hence my point that you either have patience or time the transfers well... Which CAN work

But when it comes to form-based attackers, you'd have to go up to 6.0 or 6.5 ST, or 7.5+ mids... Or shift to defence, which, again, can work well with proper transfer timing... Or can lock you into a premium downgrade decision you didn't expect to see yourself making so soon

Again, this all goes wrong if Armstrong is the new Fraser, and I'll quickly downgrade my 6.5m attack slot to him, giving me an unexpected upgrade elsewhere

Takes couple of transfers to solve this problem but yes, I wouldn't bother to get more than one mid below 7m unless fixtures are tasty...

I'm not seeing any Tierny love on here, do people think he's to much of a risk?? I like the idea of him bombing down the wing for Arsenal, at points he looked very good on the eye test last season.

He played in the back 3 several times this season rather than LB or LWB but arguably that could be because they lacked CBs. He could be a good option but would rather get him on my WC after seeing how Arsenal performs, where he plays and whether he is nailed

I like the look of Werner, but he's unproven in the PL and I'm not sure how all of Chelsea's signings will settle. Could be awesome but I'm trying to be more cautious this year. Great potential for a risk taker!
