How to play FanTeam’s €1m Premier League Fantasy Game – A Beginner’s Guide

Sponsored by FanTeam

Fantasy Football Scout are again joining forces with FanTeam, Europe’s biggest daily Fantasy sports platform, for the 2020/21 season.

An astonishing – and guaranteed – €1m is on offer in their season-long Premier League Fantasy game, with €200,000 going to the winner.

There is no catch here, only a €25 entry fee – a payment you’ll make up just by finishing in the top 5,659.

Given that only 75,000 entries are permitted, the odds are favourable for those who know their stuff.

On top of that, there are also prizes handed out to Fantasy managers who perform well on a weekly and monthly basis.

So how do you play FanTeam’s game?

Our guide below has all you need to know to get started.

WHAT ARE THE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES TO FPL?

Here’s the great news: anyone with any sort of Fantasy Premier League experience should be able to pick up FanTeam’s game without issue.

The rules, scoring and prices are very similar to FPL, so skills – and indeed squads – are easily transferable.

It’s essentially FPL but with huge cash prizes. Given that paid entry mini-leagues are now strongly discouraged by the Premier League, the FanTeam game offers Fantasy managers a legitimate opportunity to make money from their management expertise.

As in FPL, managers build a squad of 15 players that includes two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders and three forwards.

A maximum of three players from a single Premier League team can be selected, with the budget for the initial squad set at 100.0m.

A starting XI is then selected for each Gameweek from that squad of 15.

One free transfer is allowed each Gameweek, with each additional transfer costing minus four points. Managers can roll a Gameweek transfer forward but can never have more than two free transfers in their locker.

FanTeam managers have two Wildcards to use, one for each half of the season. Unlimited free transfers can be used when the Wildcard is deployed and also ahead of Gameweek 1.

A captain (and vice-captain) has to be nominated every week; that player will score double points if they are handed the armband.

How to play FanTeam's €1m Premier League Fantasy game - a beginner's guide

All sound very familiar? That’s because the two games are largely the same – although there are a handful of differences to watch out for.

KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FANTEAM AND FPL
  • Player prices can rise and fall based on form and in-game transfer movement but, unlike in FPL, a player’s ‘sell price’ is the same as their ‘buy price’.
  • Other than the two aforementioned Wildcards, there aren’t any chips in FanTeam.
  • More than one team is allowed per person, with each entry costing €25.

HOW DO PLAYERS SCORE POINTS?

Seasoned FPL managers should have no problem in adjusting to FanTeam and running a squad with its familiar scoring system, which is shown above.

KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FANTEAM AND FPL
  • There is no Bonus Points System, which is replaced by plus/minus points if a team is winning/losing during the period a player is on the pitch.
  • Goalkeepers get 0.5 points for every save made, unlike the one point awarded in FPL for increments of three stops.
  • Committing a foul that leads to a free-kick goal or converted penalty is penalised by minus two points.
  • Midfielders and forwards get an extra point for completing the full match.
Win a share of €1m as FanTeam and Fantasy Football Scout join forces

We’ll be back over the coming weeks with a series of articles on FanTeam’s million-euro cash game, delving deeper into the player prices, fixture list and strategy.

Until then, head over to FanTeam and start tinkering with your team. As is the case in FPL, unlimited transfers are allowed before Gameweek 1 and the player prices don’t change until the season is underway.

Not really, you do seem to have an excess £2m on the bench though.

I don’t think Ake will be a regular starter so I’d downgrade him to Ferguson and upgrade Rodriguez and Bamford.

Who do you think city CBs will be. Ake was expensive buy to not start, especially if Garica leaves.

Almost all of the City defenders were expensive but Ake has always played on the left so I’d say he’s probably going to be more of an understudy to Laporte.

That is a good point but who you think plays on right as first choice.

Probably Garcia as it stands but the others will probably get games as well and the full backs will likely be rotated too so I think I would just avoid the City defence to be honest.

What formation are you trying to use?

It isn’t too mid heavy because you have 2 questionable cheap mids. But then you have 2 questionable forwards as well.

Basically it’s just too imbalanced when trying to get Auba and Salah together. Choose one and upgrade one of your mids or one of your forwards.

      1. cjhewitt92

I was looking at playing a midfield 5. In effect taking out the premium forward picked from last season to a midfielder.

        1. Tomerick
          • 9 Years
          3 years, 7 months ago

It’s not good enough to play 5 mids consistently there. Jota will get you a lot of 1 pointers as his minutes are not as guaranteed right now and Soucek is a good option as a 5th but more as an enabler to get more expensive team members. Looking at your team you need to either downgrade Auba and use the funds to upgrade Jota or downgrade Ake and see what you can do with those funds.

Even if Arteta deploys 3 at the back, it would be very brave to start with 2 young players who have never kicked a ball in the Prem. I imagine Luiz will start, one of Saliba/Gabriel and maybe Holding.

Was speaking to a Bundesliga fan about Werner:
      - Many of his goals came from balls through behind a high line of defence
      - High line much more common in Bundesliga, teams like Burnley don't do that
      - He played off another striker and sometimes played games on the wing much like Aubameyang

Isn't the striker curse sort of overrated. Shevchenko and Torres were ages ago. Costa did well, even Morata started off on fire before regressing massively. If Werner turns into Morata after two months I'd rather get the first 2 months worth of points

Yes that's his game but it doesn't mean he won't get chances to score goals. Ziyech, Pulisic, Mount and potentially Havertz. The supply like at Chelsea is better than RBL.

My understanding was a lot of his goals came like that, sort of like Vardy of few years ago. Scored hitting teams on breaking and pressing. Not sure Chelsea will suit his style.

Nagelsmann also said as much upon his departure:

        https://weaintgotnohistory.sbnation.com/2020/8/15/21369881/should-we-be-concerned-about-timo-werner-and-packed-opposition-defenses

Haven't watched much of him - but in the youtube clip below showing all 28 of his goals in this season, the player he reminds me most of is Pulisic - very pacy & direct. The Vardy comparison is also valid though - also seems similar to Ser Jamie, which is never a bad thing

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bRPncvNfgY

My plan is to start with both Ings & Jimmy & keep 1.0 ITB in case we get GW1 fireworks from Werner

If we don't - he'll fall in price pretty quickly & can be a good bargain then if/when he does get adapted

Pens could be the big swinger - with pens at 9.5 its probably going to be harder for him to fail than to succeed

Its just how quickly can he start producing - definitely someone I'm keepin in mind with a quick route to him if needed early on

If you haven't played before you are probably chucking 75 euros down the toilet. All the big money will be won by players entering the 100 max teams, and they wouldn't be investing 2500 euros unless they knew it was a sound investment.

Wait. Why was Armstrong rotated so often last season? I didn't monitor him as my attention was on Ings

Seems to do amazingly well when he starts... But why doesn't he? Were there injuries?

I don't see injuries here, but he's easily their best player after Ings: https://www.transfermarkt.com/stuart-armstrong/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/130765/saison/2019/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/180

I'll appreciate any answers about this, please

Hojbjerg is the answer. He started playing towards the end of the season once Hojbjerg got phased out due to contract talks.

        1. Ze_Austin

...but Armstrong started playing in GW10. Missed the starting XI ten times after :/

His goals and assists started in GW22. Missed the starting XI five times after

Then the restart was in GW30, where I think Hojbjerg's exit had become clear. Missed the three times after

I'm over here wondering if there's some tactical aspect to this from the coach, an injury that the site didn't report (happens often), or if it's based on Hojbjerg. I just hope it's not rotation

I'll check if Hojbjerg's starts directly affected his, as that would mean he's now nailed in S'oton and my team

            Hojbjerg: https://www.transfermarkt.com/pierre-emile-hojbjerg/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/167799/saison/2019/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/180

Looking at project restart only, to summarize:
Right off the bat: GW38, Hojbjerg out of squad but Armstrong still on the damn bench 😐
Before that: GW32, Hojbjerg not in squad, Armstrong on the bench

Seems when one started and the other was on the bench or out of the squad, it was more of a coincidence than rotation between both of them

Except if this is like Pep's system? I'm so confused now

An unknown variable, aka the Hassenhuttl shuffle. Make sure you have a decent bench if you're keen on Armstrong. Otherwise, JWP may be a solid alternative for 0.5m more. Nailed, on set-pieces, and massively underperformed last season.

Thanks! Can't get myself to trust that I will KEEP a 5.5m mid if I see him on the bench twice in 6 GWs due to pure rotation (when he isn't, say, hitting the point heights the City boys can hit with rotation), so I'll probably make a needless transfer and miss out on the many points this dude is capable of long term

Would work for the more patient managers, but I'll have to accept that he doesn't fit how I play and he will make me make more backfiring transfers

JWP feels... Reliant on set pieces? Not sure. Guess I'll just let that S'oton mid slot go. Really love their attack as a team, though. One to watch for me

Anyone have FanTeam drafts/questions? I've been tinkering/reading through lots of FanTeam stuff prior to FPL launch, so can help out folks.

      Current standard draft:

      Lloris Meslier
      TAA VvD Saliba Vinagre White
      Salah KdB Fernandes Greenwood Soucek
      Antonio Kean Leko

      Basic tenets:
      - Pick top 6 teams. There are bonus points if your team wins the game. Players like Grealish and Ings are nowhere near as good.
      - Forwards suck. No bonus points hurts forwards. There are also 4.0 forwards so you can save some money there..
      - Get nailed on players. Bonus point if your mid/fwd plays the full 90 mins (I know I'm breaking my own rule there with Greenwood...)
      - Get a better keeper. 0.5 points for a save is huge. When a keeper makes 5 saves he gets 2.5 points compared to 1 in FPL. But again, better to get Leno or Lloris because of the bonus point for winning the game.

Hi Camzy, questioning the article really - what's your take on these two points, as doesnt sound right in the article. Wildcards, there are 2, one in 1st half and 1 in 2nd. Though I can't see anywhere in fanteam that states this, to me it looks like you get 2 and can use them whenever you want. Secondly, article says deadline is 1hr before kick off, but I expect its actually more likely to be upon kick off, as with their other games?

          There are 2 wildcards.

One in the first half and one in the second half. I dug into the rules a bit earlier, it definitely says that somewhere. I think it's GW19 last chance to use the first one.

Deadline is at kickoff in accordance with all FanTeam so yes, that's a mistake in the article.

Thanks, I saw that wildcard rule in the rules section but it was only defined under the 19/20 season, they don't seem to have any detailed rules for 20/21 as of yet, but suppose best to assume it will be the same rules apply. I was just going from the basic rules which seemed vague "In this tournament you have 2 wildcard(s) to be used"

Whilst I would have won some money had I played Fan team last season, I feel like, for me at least, it would suck the fun out of the game feeling like every mistake or bad week might have cost me some money. I like the prospect of converting success in the game to more attainable prize money but I feel that it is against the spirit of the game.

Controversial opinion: Fantasy Football is gambling. You get to decide how much you want to gamble, but it is ultimately a form of gambling. Maybe closer to poker than to slots, but it is ultimately a game of chance and managing risk.

Unfortunate if this is controversial. I think it is cold hard fact. I also don't have a problem with gambling , but can see why some do. At the end of the day its the choice of the individual to do anything and gambling is only a problem when the choice is removed, e.g. through addiction. Pretty sure FPL addiction is still very much a thing.

Totally agree. Personally my problem with gambling on sport is how the ads always try and make it seem like it’s a matter of skill and intelligence when really the overruling factor is always luck.

Skill vs luck has always been an age old debate though. It's really just playing the odds, even in games like blackjack there is a degree of skill involved but skill can only take you so far. FPL a lot skill involved than blackjack ofc, but still need that all important luck to seal the deal. So in that sense I think it's fine to imply that you can 'get better' at gambling through skill because it's true. However the masses who see the ads may not be in a position to understand this and/or actually take advantage of it, which is where I see the problem to be.

Yes I agree fully. You can definitely understand the odds more and give yourself a better chance of success but that can encourage you to overstretch and as you say it always comes down to luck in the end. I definitely agree that the average person isn’t gambling based on stats and analytics too.

when i go in a shop if something doesnt sell it gets reduced in price ,prime example this year is 10.0 for vardy ,id like to see fpl have a sale where you get 10% off a player and maybe pay a 1 point per week price for this purchase .
      eg vardy 9.0
      plays 2
      scores 4
      baps3
so 9 if you paid in full
8 if you bought in the sale
would bring more players into the pool and a bit of variance .

also players to rise or fall whenever they hit the threshhold ,so what if someone goes up 5 times in a week of falls by the equivalent and not waiting till 2am for the rise ,let it happen at 7pm if the threshhold is reached ,same for all would massively encourage desicion making.

Not sure if this has been covered here.

With a international break before season starts and Man City and Utd season only just finishing. Will Man City and Utd season start later than rest of division and is there any sense in avoiding some internationals, if they are travelling miles.

Could be some surprise selections for Gameweek 1. Would love people thoughts.

It's been covered to death, the general feeling is that both Manchester clubs fixtures will be moved to midweek which will give them the required 30 days between seasons but the fixtures will still be part of GW1.

Anyone know what sort of attacking threat Vinagre has? Not sure just looking at team and positions works. AWB at United for example is more or less the worst attacking option among any top team. I'm wondering whether it's useful to consider different scenarios for Vinagre as a more and a less attacking threat to see where he stands in value compared to Doherty. I'm also thinking it's prudent to look at good and bad spells for Wolves when looking at value - their players are much less likely to be those illusory season holds - so why not look what happens when there good or poor?

Apologies if maths and/or reasoning is out

Checking weeks 25 on for Wolves at current prices we get a best case scenario for Wolves for when they're hot

      Doherty 90 points at 6.0
      Jonny 67 points at 5.5
Vinagre [67 points at 4.5] - inheriting Jonny points
Vinagre [60 points at 4.5] - projected guesstimate returns with one haul less - still gets attacking returns

Jonny actually did well in that period with two double digit returns and his returns are more than minimal. He's never matched Doh but has always liked threatening, More Shaw than AWB 🙂 So there are two numbers for Vinagre depending on how he turns out.

Looking at value over that period using points over price we get

      Doherty = 15
      Vinagre as Jonny = 14.88
      Vinagre adjusted down = 13.33

Those are optimal Wolves numbers. Realistically they won't reproduce those numbers over a complete season. Doherty would be over 250 points if they did!!

Looking at weeks 1-24 where Wolves were EL tied and Boly was mostly out we get very different numbers for a bad case scenario

Doherty 77 points giving value of 12.8
Vinagre as Jonny 56 points giving value of 9.33
Vinagre adjusted 50 points or so giving value of 8.33

What I'm taking this away from this is that Doherty is the best choice when Wolves are hot and is not far off the best of Vinagre even when in a poor spell. Vinagre at 4.5 may save money but it's not better value if these numbers stand up.

Doherty range from 15 to 12.8
Vinagre range from 14.88 to 8.33 (depending on how he turns out)

          Fair

Think there’s enough distance though between top end of Doherty and likely low end of Vinagre to make it worth it. May well end up with both.

Other benefit of Doh is he’s a route into 5.5 if Wolves look poor. Not many but enough options there to make me interested. Drawback with quadruple 4.5 is that 5.5 is harder to reach

I’m working on the assumption that Vinagre was second choice for a reason and won’t match Jonny. A leap clearly

        Nicely said

I've owned Vinagre almost every time Jonny's been injured, but never gotten an attacking return

        He's just not... That good?

I see him more like Saiss was last season after Europa: very cheap for a whole lot of clean sheets against lower opposition, then bench for a spattering of tough games or sell for a large block of tough games... Or once there's a Boly injury

I'm planning on both. I think Doherty is a good set and forget. Vinagre looks like a good 4.5 option for 4th/5th defender for my team.

Believe it or not - AWB actually got 81 points to Doherty's 90 points from GW25 onwards (including baps he must have been up on 90+ as well)

9 cleansheets & 3 assists in those 18 starts wasn't terrible... it was actually fantastic come to think of it

But yeah he won't be on anyone's shopping lists at 5.5

Doherty looks underpriced by about 0.5, and Vinagre looks underpriced by about 1.0 while Jonny is dead

        Both good options

Vinagre i suppose has the flexibility factor for those with a burning desire to put 1.5m towards someone more expensive elsewhere - but Doherty is a super FPL asset, no doubt

Have a blind spot with AWB 🙂

I’d have the underpricing with Doherty and Vinagre the other way around though not in 0.5 units. Doh I’d have as 6.7 and Vinagre as 4.8 in real terms.

Was only 71 points excluding baps too - not 81 as he didn’t get those extra 5 games of appearance points in 13 vs 18 game samples

So a fair enough gap, but post baps he must have been close to 80 in that spell to docs 90

Just need to watch the 6.7 & 4.8 pricing

            (1) that’s in an environment where everyone has 108m+ TV
            (2) it’s also in an environment where Vinagre isn’t starting because of Otto

As things stand today (I.e. new game, new season, 100m budget, Otto dead)

Vinagre should be otto’s 5.5 & doc would be fair at 6.5

Re pricing I was simply thinking that each of their prices was exaggerated by the 0.5 price system preseason. I’d have best case Vinagre at 5.0 whereas Doh would be at least 6.5 and I suspect more

Are there any viable players at the lowest price brackets this year?

      GK - 4.0
Nyland could get some game time for Villa if they don't bring any other keepers in, but other than that looks like back-up only like Button.

      Def - 4.0
Bernado, Branthwaite, Douglas and Ferguson popular. Of those looks like Ferguson could get game time while Palace have defensive injuries?

      Mid - 4.5
I've seen Stephens, Leko, Gilmour, Smith-Rowe in teams but not many options.

      Forward - 4.5
Only players are Davis and Vassilev at Villa, Brewster who could get a loan move, and Wickham. Not sure any of these are going to get many minutes?

I asked earlier what people thought Lewandowski would cost if he joined Chelsea. I estimate that 11.5m would be a fair price although I guess 12m wouldn't be totally out of the question. My point - simplistic as maybe - is this; based solely on their goal involvement in last seasons Bundesliga (38 Lewandowski, 36 Werner) doesn't that make Werner a bit underpriced at 9.5m? If nothing else there's definitely a bit of margin for error there.

I don't think FPL have an algorithm or formula to determine player prices based on past returns, there's clearly a lot of subjectivity involved. As such, Werner who has been a top-class forward for maybe around 3 seasons and had 1 arguably world-class season is clearly not in the same league as Lewandowski who has consistently been one of, if not the absolute best, no. 9 in Europe since about 2013. People are clamouring for him to win the Ballon D'Or this season (unfortunately scrapped), it would be a travesty if he's any less than 12. But that doesn't automatically make Werner a 11.5 forward as it's based on more than just last season's numbers.

Another thing, does anyone else think the FPL have dangled a carrot for the forwards? I done a bit of crude arithmetic and I reckon that most of the premium midfielders are 0.5m over priced while there's quite a few up front who could easily have been assessed 0.5m higher.

I don't know if im allowed to ask this but if you want to put some money and learn more about FPL. Where is better to do this?
Here on FFS Member or Fantasy football Fix? Or anything else

No one's going to ban you for asking (hope not anyway) but you're not exactly setting yourself up for fair and unbiased answers xD

FWIW there are pros and cons to each. I paid for membership here this year for easy access to the data, despite being fully aware that I can get everything I need from places like understat anyway. Also, perhaps more importantly, as a way to support the site as a user of close to 10 years. Never used FFFix or Hub or any of the other ones so not sure what they offer, but I'm not overly bothered about 'advice' or articles as such because most of those are freely available anyway, from the comparatively few sources that are worth listening to. I wouldn't even pay for LateRiser's articles on here to be honest, I just follow his twitter and he tweets his thoughts way more regularly. So it's down to what you personally are looking for as a return for your money.

You don’t need to pay any individual that’s mad. But if you want just become a member here.
What’s fix do? Do you have to enter your fantasy log in details into their site? If so I wouldn’t join any service that requires that, no doubt how Andy, Neale etc got “hacked”

Ah ok, but still I don’t understand why any website needs your actual log in details. You could just manually pick which players are in your team.
I see absolutely no reason why a website would require your log in, maybe they put that feature in innocently thinking it’s easier to use. But from a security point of view it’s terrible, it’s like giving a financial advisor all your bank details
