Hall of Fame number one Fábio Borges joins Fantasy Football Scout for 2020/21

We at Fantasy Football Scout are delighted to announce that we’ve added yet another high-profile name to our all-star cast of contributors for the 2020/21 season.

And Fantasy Premier League managers don’t come much more illustrious than Fábio Borges, who currently sits atop our Career Hall of Fame.

You’ll need a pretty impressive season history to claim first place in those rankings and Fábio boasts an incredible track record of five successive finishes in the top 5,000 of FPL.

Two of those have been inside the top 1k, with his best-ever overall rank of 95th recorded in 2018/19.

Fábio has never finished outside the top 20,000 in six seasons of playing the game and, just to underscore his prowess, he was also the winner of Ragabolly’s inaugural Virtual FPL competition over the summer.

The Lisbon resident will be involved with Fantasy Football Scout in a Pro Pundit capacity and will be writing articles throughout the season.

Fábio follows site founder Mark Sutherns in joining our star-studded team of contributors, which includes some of the best FPL managers in the world.

The likes of Lateriser, Zophar and Tom Freeman, who have multiple top 1k finishes between them, have come aboard for another year and we are thrilled that they will be writing for us once again in 2020/21.

While there will be our usual offering of free content from these elite names, only Premium Members of Fantasy Football Scout will get unrestricted access to all of their analysis and team reveals.

Full-year subscriptions are available for the pre-season price of £17.50 until August 31, while rolling monthly Memberships can be purchased for £2.99.

Matheus Pereira may resulted in a Buendia given how poor are the attackers around him. Can't understand the hype.

That's an excellent way to improve your English. The standard of English in the site's articles is very good.

A bit of constructive criticism. A better way of saying what you've just said would be "I have improved my English since reading and posting comments to this site."

Writing also only has one 't'.

I was only thinking about this the other day. I teach English and often think about correcting grammar on here (when English is clearly not the poster’s first language). I don’t do it, because it’s not really the place, but wonder if it would sometimes be appreciated.

My budget midfielder pick is Pereira. Yes he will be a promoted newbie but he is WBA's main attacking outlet. Looking at their opening fixtures could get some decent returns. At 6.0 and below there is not much choice to be honest. Could go Armstrong but then you may end up triple SOU which does not tickle my fancy. ASM another option but his fitness is yet another concern. I also do not want to punt Soucek as WHU fixtures are basically the worst.

Pereira is either going to be a hit or a total flop. Nailed though and if he does nothing early an easy swith to Armstrong or ASM or anyone cheaper etc without messing with the rest of my starting 11.

Sad thing here is that you're describing Buendia... Or maybe that's just the fear of an unrelated previous bad experience talking

To be fair, Buendia didn't start the season so terribly anyway

      1. FOO FIGHTER
        • 4 Years

Point is that that there is not much midfield choice at 6.0 and under. Anything mids at 6.5 do not look like hauling potential either unless anyone think Foden is nailed which he won't be.

Pereira is at a nice price point to switch him between Armstrong, ASM or cheaper if it goes wrong. I do not think upgrading to a 6.5 is worth it.

    The conundrum of premium defenders:

If you start without them, it might be hard to convince yourself to get them, as there are usually at least two 4.0/4.5 D and one 6.0/6.5 M/F with good form and/or fixtures in the league at any point in time, and it's quite easy to forget how fixture-proof premium defenders are, so their "bad fixtures" stand against them in these decisions

If you start with them, it might be hard to convince yourself to sell them and change formation (replacing a benched attacker with a 4.0/4.5 D) for similarly priced attackers who are more form/fixture based, as you'll (correctly?) believe they'll outscore the similarly priced attackers long-term

Either way, you might be right or wrong. Takes hindsight or some clearly significant predictive occurrences like an Alisson/VVD/Laporte/Boly injury

I think that decision should be more personal. What suits your style of play more? Are you naturally more patient than the other FPL managers who might (correctly) make those form and fixture based transfers? Are you more successful (or likely to go) with form and fixture based transfers?

Good luck with your decision here. I really feel it comes down to your style of play

I was sure I'd start with TAA and Robertson, but Chelsea and Arsenal in the first two - plus an unknown quantity in Leeds - has put me right off.

      I'm on 7.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.0 at present. There looks to be lots of value in 4.5m defenders this year.

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 7 months ago

Yes, there are good 4.5s out there

But they aren't known to be fixture proof or exactly long term, so they are transfers waiting to happen (much) later, and it is very possible that you'll time that transfer/rotation right, so it can very easily work for you

My point is that someone with 7.5 7.0/6.0 4.5 4.5 4.0 might score fewer/same/more points than your team, by replacing your benched 4.5m attacker with that 7.0/6.0 D, but the best way they can maximize the points from that decision seems to be some serious patience

I can't even attempt to guess which of you will win on the long run if the rest of your XI and captains are identical, as I think they're both viable strategies. That's why I said it comes down to you as a player

Also, you've brought something I talked about in my post: premium defenders don't really have bad fixtures, as they belong to the kind of defences that can keep out those scary attacks coming, and can also chip in with random attacking returns in the worst games... And, again, they're meant to be there for a very patient period that runs beyond fixture swings. Even with this, will they outscore the 4.0/4.5 combination with cheap attackers using form and fixtures? I have no idea

There's a grey area here, where there are teams who have 5.5m M/D and no 6.0 to 7.0 slot in defence or attack. This post doesn't apply to those teams

        1. Twisted Saltergater
          • 14 Years

Agree with everything your saying 🙂 If Liverpool's fixture run of Leeds, Chelsea, Arsenal came at any point into the season, then I wouldn't be considering selling Robertson and just going with TAA. But we effectively have a wildcard now so can choose the defence we think is optimal for the start.

With that in mind, I hope I prioritise bringing Robertson in GW4. I am likely to have other pressing matters though!

      Good post.

I'm absolutely set on TAA, VVD, Vinagre (unless they sign a LB) and Ferguson.

Last spot comes down to a 4.5m + Werner or Doherty + Ziyech.

      1. goriuanx

On paper the latter sounds better but it locks me into a heavy defence and little room to manoeuvre with my forward, so I'm probably going with the former at the moment with the view of keeping Martial, Aguero etc at an arms length.

    4. FOO FIGHTER

VVD, TAA and Doherty are mean machines for points and will most likely outscore the likes of Mitro, Soucek, ASM etc over the season.

I guess it is just the way you setup your starting 11.

Are Wolves and LFC opening fixtures that bad?

Wolves no Europe and LFC only CHE and City to get by.

Doherty over any current mid up to 6.5 all day long.

Yep, having a crap GW1 then playing your Wildcard in GW2 is a bad idea. Agreed. Also, even if you plan your team to maximise GW1 fixtures, with the intention of playing your WC in GW2 ~ it's still generally considered as a bad idea. Again, agreed. This season however, it might not be. Copping a deaf'un to the usual rhetoric might be a worthy differential this year. How many points does a wildcard normally save you? Let's say 20 points. How many extra points can I make with the following team? And how useful when building my team for GW2 will the knowledge be from having seen GW1? Also, after a few weeks, not having the escape route of a WC helps keep your focus ~ and removes the temptation!

          Verdy - WBA (A); Ings - Cry (A): Kane - Eve (H)
          Bench:~ Nyland + Ferguson + 2* 4.5 mids.

I may not do this myself yet but it maybe shouldn't be dismissed as an option. And yes, not having Trent would be a worry!

A bit risky only having 2 premium mids as its the mids that are going to get most of the points this season. Too much spent up top but could work out

I’m going with WC GW3 instead. It gives an additional GW to observe and there is a slight fixture shift for teams like Man City, Wolves, Arsenal (good time to get rid of Arsenal assets).

Downsides vs GW2 WC is possibly fewer Man Utd players (I’ll get 1 with the FT) for the Palace fixture and Liverpool Chelsea playing each other. However Liverpool Chelsea games last season had a lot of goals so unless you are doubling up on Liverpool defence in GW1, it shouldn’t be a big issue for attackers.

Yes it's true, GW3 is a good time to drop Arsenal assets - so I can see your point.

Planning to use the wc that early is a really awful decision. If someone's starting squad is a disaster and its needed then fair enough, but planning it? Woeful.

We clearly don't agree on this one, as I think that having a disastrous GW1 is not a good reason to play your WC. Best of luck.

Didn't mention using it after one week. For me a bad start would be a horrid 3 or 4 weeks where it's obvious the squad isnt going to turn it around. Planning to use the most powerful chip we have after one or two weeks though....awful imo.

I prefer to think of the WC as a lifejacket if things go wrong early rather than have a dedicated week to use it

Yes that's what everyone thinks. I'm just suggesting that as there is a staggered start this season that other options are considered.

Better option to start with? Want to keep the pair for as long as possible....

                          A..... ings and asm

                          B....jiminez and armstrong

Can't see Ings be worth 8.5m without penalties, at least compared with Jimenez.

                            City intrigue me this season....

                            A) will Aguero be first choice? Getting on a bit, but Jesus wasteful end of last season despite his hard work.

                            B) Mahrez - could be a great pic this year. Got 175 points last season, priced just 8.5m this season with no Sane or Silva.

                            Thoughts?

I think KDB/sterling is enough this season

Sane has been replaced by Torres but he isn’t a threat to sterling than sane was so i think sterling is a safer pick. I wouldn’t even start on the striker position as pep will rotate

With the strikers I don’t think there has been a clear first choice for a while now unless one of them is injured or seriously out of form. They just get rotated and you’ll have to accept that if you for Aguero. The upside is he tends to play more in easier home games in which he is more likely to haul though.

Mahrez could become an option at some point in the season but if you look at his recent minutes both in CL or PL, he hasn’t started any of the last 5 so doesn’t seem to be 1st choice anymore. They also have Torres added to the rotation in his position.

Looks decent enough, Spurs don’t keep clean sheets so i would be wary of that and i would look to find the extra .5 to get Doherty. P.S love the wakka grav

Leeds to consider a move for Origi if a move for Edouard doesn't materialise. Also want Brewster on loan.

Bar City! 3 of his 4 goals last season came against City

That's the game I would be targeting!

Regarding the City midfield, Will Ferran Torres and Mahrez interfere with each other FPLwise? It seems to me that they perform the same function in the team, which makes me not want either.

Aguero and Jesus probably interfere with each other for similar reasons.

What will Bilva's role be? He's quite cheap at 7.5, so if he starts, that's a huge saving over the cost of Sterling or De Bruyne.

Unfortunately, they and Rodri seem to be the only nailed mids for City, so I might have to stump up the De Bruyne cash. Bilva is still quite tempting at 7.5 though.

Bilva too much of a rotation risk, Sterling and KdB the only 2 serious options imo

Soucek is at such a handy little price isn’t he?

West Ham’s fixtures are horrific after GW1 - but you can’t beat a 5.0 starting mid with a bit of sporadic goal threat thrown in for good measure

Im definitely considering. The fixtures are not as awful as they appear at first glance. Hammers went pretty well post lockdown and at that price you can’t ask for much more.

What does Soucek need to deliver over (say) the first eight games to have been a success?

28 points would be 3.5 per game. That's:
                                          16 appearance points
                                          - 1 yellow
                                          5 points for a goal
                                          3 points for an assist
                                          5 points bonus

Just about plausible for me. And what he enables elsewhere makes it a risk worth taking. Don't feel confident picking a more expensive (5.5/6) alternative will necessarily guarantee more points. So he's in (for now!)

                                          I'm just thinking out loud..

                                          1. Werner- everyone says that the price is lower in relation to the quality of the player- and I agree! But CFC has 4 strikers at the moment, of which Abraham has to get minutes, and Ziru has a excelent end of seasson and the Euro is waiting for him this year.

                                          2. Kane or Son? Mostly everyone takes Son because of the price but don't forget that Mourinho style games suit him better. Also, Kane's game schedule this season is terrible, because he doesn't have a worthy replacement.

                                          3. Wardy. I haven’t seen him in many teams, and he’s the league’s top scorer to have fantastic fixtures.

                                          4. Placeholders. You all have a plan to trade Auba or Mane for players from MU or City in GW2 or 3... but what happens if placeholders explode? This seson is not like last when a of us had same players...this time there are much more great options.

                                            4. I'd like to think I still sell them (hopefully with a little price profit). Because if they did well the opposition is a significant factor. And in Auba's case the fixtures 3-8 are far less likely to deliver returns

                                            1. I expect Abraham to mainly get minutes off the bench and in the cups. No way Werner signs unless he's a guaranteed part of the XI. Plus he's several levels above his competition

Seson is long and heavy...And Lamps have players to rotate. Timo will be #1 but not with minutes as Kane or Vardy...so the difference in price is 1M

Probably, but perhaps not until Xmas period. Realistically we're building teams for first eight weeks max

                                            3. I would like Vardy but prioritising Werner (ownership, exciting new toy) and Jimenez (Mr Reliable at 1.5m less).

And at Leicester I think it's Vardy or nothing

Same, so i got Zyich and Vardy. Too many mangers took Werner and there i see my oportunity
