How to Play Sky Sports Fantasy Football – A Beginner’s Guide

With the start of a new Premier League season moving ever closer, we switch our focus to Sky Sports Fantasy Football.

£50,000 is on offer to the game’s winner in 2021/22, with cash prizes of £5,000 and £1,000 dished out to those managers finishing in the other two podium places.

The fourth and fifth-placed managers are awarded games consoles, as are the highest-scoring Fantasy bosses of the month.

If you’re new to the Sky game or merely in need of a refresher of the rules and scoring system, we will go over the basics of the game in the article below.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser

HOW DO I PLAY?

TEAM SELECTION

Just like in Fantasy Premier League, managers select a team of players that will either earn attacking, defensive or bonus points in an attempt to score more than friends, colleagues and/or the rest of the world. However, this is not a squad-based game: you choose simply a starting XI and do not have a bench.

The budget, like in FPL, is £100m. There is no quota for players from the same club, however.

TRANSFERS

Game Weeks run from Friday to Thursday with managers allowed transfers in between Match Days, allowing the maximisation of potential points by bringing in an asset yet to play for one who has already been involved that week.

Instead of one free switch per Game Week as per FPL, the Sky Sports game allocates 40 transfers that can be used at any time during the season – with a limit of five in one Game Week – creating the need for a more long-term strategy.

CHIPS

‘Overhauls’ (the equivalent of Wildcards) are also available in Sky Sports, with two being allocated every season in specific periods.

CAPTAINCY

In the Sky Sports game, you can name more than one captain in a Game Week so long as the players in question are in action on different days. For example, if there were fixtures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in any given Game Week, a Sky Sports Fantasy manager could name a different skipper on each of those Match Days, providing they did so before that day’s deadline. Managers can also schedule their captains ahead of a Game Week, too.

HOW DO YOU SCORE POINTS?

The points structure is largely similar to FPL in Sky Sports Fantasy but tends to award more points for the actions mentioned below.

ActionPoints scored
Starting XI2
Substitution appearance1
Goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender7
Goal scored by a midfielder6
Goal scored by a striker5
Goal assist3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper (must play 60+ mins)7
Clean sheet by a defender (must play 60+ mins)5
A penalty save by a goalkeeper5
Man of the Match3

CAN MY TEAM LOSE POINTS?

Unfortunately, just like in FPL there are a few ways to lose points too.

ActionPoints scored
Missing a penalty-3
Every goal conceded from the second goal onwards-1
Each yellow card-1
Each red card-3
Each own goal-2

HOW DO BONUS POINTS WORK?

Just like in FPL, there are additional points on offer for other events in matches – although the structure is slightly different, as you will see below:

Tier 1 ActionPoints scored
3 saves made (GK only)2
4 tackles won2
60 completed passes2
2 shots on target2
Tier 2 ActionPoints scored
5+ saves made (GK only)3
5+ tackles won3
70+ completed passes3
3+ shots on target3

head over to our Premium Members Area to see which players will potentially benefit from the Sky Sports bonus on offer for saves, tackles, passes and shots on target.

HOW DO I PLAY AGAINST MY FRIENDS?

There are a number of different ways to compete against others in the Sky Sports game. You can create or join a Free League with your friends and colleagues but there are ways to win money too.

Sky Sports can actually administer your money league for you to avoid any awkwardness post-season. You can choose the entry fee (either £2, £5, £10 or £20 per person) and the prize structure beforehand and Sky Sports will take care of the rest.

We have already set up our annual, free-to-enter Fantasy Football Scout mini-league, which you can enter by heading to the ‘Leagues’ tab and clicking ‘Join+’.

    McCarthy (Nyland)
TAA / Robbo / Dier / Vinagre (Fergie)
Salah / Son / Auba / Pereira (Flash)
    Werner / Mitro (Davis)

I’ve never had a TAA/Robbo double up before and am quite excited by it.

I’m not 100% settled on Vinagre.
Anyone recommend a better 4.5 def to fit in?

    Any thoughts on this 4-4-2...?

I had it last season and rode through the tough patch at the beginning. Paid off fine for me.

I see a number of people with Dier. He didn’t exactly score or assist a lot. Didn’t have that many minutes last season either.

Was only tried at centre back towards the end of the season.
I think if he can stay fit and nail that spot, then he’s a good option.
Mourinho has a bit of a thing for him...

Had a weird dream I forgot to put McCarthy in my final team for his 10 pointer in gw1 and started lamenting after. For some reason I had Tim Krul lol.

Arnold also had 3 assists and i think Salah blanked. Matip scored though which probably makes it null and void

Anyone else struggling with who to drop to bring in manc players

I’ve selected a team that I like for fixtures and their ability to return

Aside from auba who is an easy switch in GW3 to Kdb/sterling there isn’t really anyone I want to drop

I guess greenwood is easy enough but as for further additions

Yeah same for me. I'll just go with the flow of the season. I can move out Kane for a cheapie and upgrade Mitrovic to Martial or Pereira to a Manc mid but if my players are doing well, not sure I'll want to rush to get them out for shiny new Manc toys

It's an extremely odd scenario that we're in where many of us have premium players intended as placeholder for Manc premiums. We kind of need them to fail in order to make the planned transfers easy. If they unfortunately haul, we give ourselves a problem!

I'm hoping Utd sign a RW soon to create uncertainty.

Ideally this would be in time for GW2, and Solksjaer's selection will sow uncertainty in who starts in their front 3.

Will eliminate Greenwood from my thinking in the short term, and potentially Martial and Rashford too. Fernandes likely to be the only secure pick in that scenario, and hopefully his price limits his ownership - at least in the short term.

All this to buy time and not feel forced into early transfers before the landscape has had chance to settle.

Yes he is not a sure starter but 5.5 for naby Keita could be some real good value.

Since the restart he has looked good and is a different player compared to the other Liverpool midfield.

I do see him starting more and deffinantly getting more time off the bench.

Food for thought for anyone who wants a rotating 5.5 mid?

I agree with that, Keita has such a great potential. He had the 4th highest xA/90 (0.4) in the league last year, and xG/90 of 0.2 is pretty decent for 5.5 mid. If only he was fully nailed...

I'm not saying that he is nailed at all. Just saying he is priced really well and has the potential to be a bargain this year.

Yes he he may take up a pool slot but the best pool players cost alot and he has the potential to be a cheap way in...

I think he is definitely one to watch

Fabinho at defensive mid gives 2 places, shared between Henderson, Keita, Wijnaldum, occasionally Ox(injured) and maybe see more of Jones this year.

If Gini goes and we don't get a replacement, Keita will be straight into my team.

Can’t claim to have caught more than glimpses of Keita but nailedness is key for me

Were Hendo to start the season he’d be really high on my list as a long term play. It’d really come down to whether Doherty can match a Liverpool defender. Not seeing any 5.5 in attack I’d have ahead of him

Is a 5.5 you can just leave in place a priority when there’s so little there and we all need that makeweight?

Don't disagree with any of your points. Naildness is the main factor for me too and I currently have doherty too.

Was just pointing to the fact that naby is priced well and had the potential to be explosive. He has looked really good after the restart

That's interesting. I'm lost with all these strategies! Not played very seriously the last 3 seasons just enjoyed taking silly amounts of hits. I just can't decide the best way to go. What's your rationale behind wild carding so early? I would have thought increasing value so you've a larger amount to spend would make more sense but I'm open to any suggestions.

I always end up WCing around GW3 so why not plan it in this time instead? I want Bruno/Greenwood/KDB from GW2 and chances are I will play BB in GW1 cause it’s a chip I never score too much from and feel forced me to make suboptimal decisions later in the season.

Nothing wrong with Pepe aside from possible playtime issues. He was fantastic towards the end of last season, well worth the punt. Can't justify him over Ziyech myself right now though, who has better fixtures and in a stronger system offensively.

Not completely dead, no - those 2 are definitely Arteta's long-term CB pairing but it's unlikely he'll throw in 2 CB to play together for the first time, especially with a short pre-season.

Unless he plays with 3 CB again and goes with Saliba-Luiz-Gabriel. Still risky though.

I always had my doubts over Sailba starting the season anyway, so will avoid.

Even if he starts in the Charity Shield - it won't necessarily tell us much about Arteta's PL starting 11.

You can see why Arsenal want Gabriel, Partey and Coutinho. Would make their squad much stronger and then they have backup.

      Leno
      Bellerin Mari Gabriel Tierney
      Partey* Xhaka
      Pepe Coutinho* Willian
      Aubameyang

      Martinez
      Cedric Holding Saliba Kolasinac
      Willock Torreira
      Saka Ceballos Martinelli
      Nketiah

But there are a lot of players who need to be moved on such as Ozil, Lacazette, Mustafi, Sokratis, Elneny etc

Almost ident to mine. Prefer Mitrovic to Antonio though and he's cheaper. Antonio injury prone and hardly scores, all his goals were in one lucky game. Plus the double hammer's attack is horrible. 1m ITB for Auba Son to KDB Fernandes? I'm getting very tempted to downgrade Ziyech, completely unknown and Chelsea have a million new player's.

I struggle to play both Sky and FPL simultaneously, they're just too thought intensive.

I should really play Sky over FPL, for the cash prize. But the £50,000 is apparently not enough to lure me away from FPL.

It seems I value the prestige and social status that comes from winning FPL more than the monetary lure of Sky. Crazy when you think about it... my inner chimp is actually controlling my decisions.

Gomez isn't nailed. Expect more rotation with Matip as seen last season, bumps, form and appearances from other competitions mean the two are interchangeable, whih worked well for us last season.

    How does this look:

    Ramsdale (Nyland)
    TAA, Doherty, Egan, Taylor, Ferguson
    Salah(c), Auba, Greenwood, ASM, Stephens
    Jimenez, Werner, Brewster

Monitoring Brewster and Ferguson and of they will play.
Also keeping an eye on Ramsdale.

GW2: Salah or Auba to Bruno, unless they are on fire.
GW3/4: Salah or Auba to KDB.

Might also be a bandwagon or two, so who knows.

I would leave transfers till gw3. Auba has a couple of good fixtures and then it turns from gw3 so he’s an easier out. You just don’t lose salah full stop, he’s set and forget so for me it’s just auba > KDB in gw3 as you have united cover in Greenwood. Personally I would look at spurs to your team if you can

        Agreed on Auba.

I was pondering Son, but if I want Salah/Bruno and KDB long term, and a balanced team, it is difficult.

A downgrade of Salah/Auba to Bruno/KDB also gives me some cash flexibility to deal with issues the first game weeks.

If Bruno keeps up his form, he will be indispensable.

My issue would be the 1.5 ITB when the team is a bit light up front and with three prime defenders.

And if you look at it from a value for money perspective, putting 0.5 or even 1.0 in a set and forget GK returns more points based on last season.
