How to Play Sky Sports Fantasy Football – A Beginner’s Guide

With the start of a new Premier League season moving ever closer, we switch our focus to Sky Sports Fantasy Football.

£50,000 is on offer to the game’s winner in 2021/22, with cash prizes of £5,000 and £1,000 dished out to those managers finishing in the other two podium places.

The fourth and fifth-placed managers are awarded games consoles, as are the highest-scoring Fantasy bosses of the month.

If you’re new to the Sky game or merely in need of a refresher of the rules and scoring system, we will go over the basics of the game in the article below.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser

HOW DO I PLAY?

TEAM SELECTION

Just like in Fantasy Premier League, managers select a team of players that will either earn attacking, defensive or bonus points in an attempt to score more than friends, colleagues and/or the rest of the world. However, this is not a squad-based game: you choose simply a starting XI and do not have a bench.

The budget, like in FPL, is £100m. There is no quota for players from the same club, however.

TRANSFERS

Game Weeks run from Friday to Thursday with managers allowed transfers in between Match Days, allowing the maximisation of potential points by bringing in an asset yet to play for one who has already been involved that week.

Instead of one free switch per Game Week as per FPL, the Sky Sports game allocates 40 transfers that can be used at any time during the season – with a limit of five in one Game Week – creating the need for a more long-term strategy.

CHIPS

‘Overhauls’ (the equivalent of Wildcards) are also available in Sky Sports, with two being allocated every season in specific periods.

CAPTAINCY

In the Sky Sports game, you can name more than one captain in a Game Week so long as the players in question are in action on different days. For example, if there were fixtures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in any given Game Week, a Sky Sports Fantasy manager could name a different skipper on each of those Match Days, providing they did so before that day’s deadline. Managers can also schedule their captains ahead of a Game Week, too.

HOW DO YOU SCORE POINTS?

The points structure is largely similar to FPL in Sky Sports Fantasy but tends to award more points for the actions mentioned below.

ActionPoints scored
Starting XI2
Substitution appearance1
Goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender7
Goal scored by a midfielder6
Goal scored by a striker5
Goal assist3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper (must play 60+ mins)7
Clean sheet by a defender (must play 60+ mins)5
A penalty save by a goalkeeper5
Man of the Match3

CAN MY TEAM LOSE POINTS?

Unfortunately, just like in FPL there are a few ways to lose points too.

ActionPoints scored
Missing a penalty-3
Every goal conceded from the second goal onwards-1
Each yellow card-1
Each red card-3
Each own goal-2

HOW DO BONUS POINTS WORK?

Just like in FPL, there are additional points on offer for other events in matches – although the structure is slightly different, as you will see below:

Tier 1 ActionPoints scored
3 saves made (GK only)2
4 tackles won2
60 completed passes2
2 shots on target2
Tier 2 ActionPoints scored
5+ saves made (GK only)3
5+ tackles won3
70+ completed passes3
3+ shots on target3

head over to our Premium Members Area to see which players will potentially benefit from the Sky Sports bonus on offer for saves, tackles, passes and shots on target.

HOW DO I PLAY AGAINST MY FRIENDS?

There are a number of different ways to compete against others in the Sky Sports game. You can create or join a Free League with your friends and colleagues but there are ways to win money too.

Sky Sports can actually administer your money league for you to avoid any awkwardness post-season. You can choose the entry fee (either £2, £5, £10 or £20 per person) and the prize structure beforehand and Sky Sports will take care of the rest.

We have already set up our annual, free-to-enter Fantasy Football Scout mini-league, which you can enter by heading to the ‘Leagues’ tab and clicking ‘Join+’.

Morning all, how about this for a different approach to the Manchester problem in GW1 if you want 3 Utd?...

    TAA Rob Johnson Mitchell Ferguson
    Zychech Salah
    Obafemi Adams Mitro
    (Button Rash Greenwood Fernandes)

Depends on the 4.0 defs starting and maybe Obafemi going to Broom or Villa but rather than worry about price changes to the mids, I already have them ready on the bench. Plus, I will have the cheap players, of which, some could do well. I will look at reverting back to 4-5-1 so the cheap strikers are ultimately place holders for better defenders.Unless of course, 2 of the cheap strikers do well. Also 0.5 itb to fine tune this depending on friendlies.

If you want 3 ManUtd and 0 ManCity then why not. I'd look at maybe bench Greenwood and get KdB & Fernandes/Rashford with 2ft.

I thought about this, but if you go through who you would play instead of them, then weigh up whether they are likely to score 8 in the first week then I think it's better just to take the hit if you're that determined to get three from GW2.

Personally I'm looking at just Fernandes and Greenwood in GW2 for a -4 then KDB in GW3

Obafemi is unlikely to start and so is Ferguson (and if he starts it will probably be in place of Mitchell). So you run the risk of playing with 9 on GW1 with that team.

I think WC is the best strategy for those who want to get a lot of Manchester players right away.

And Liverpool wins 4:1 in GW1.
      Salah assist only.
You can even end up with only 4/5 players on the pitch.
Suddenly, you’re happy to be within top 7 million at the start of the season.
Think this is worst plan so far tbf.

Am I the only one going for mané instead of salah?

Still rate mané higher than salah on the eye test even with even price tags.

Yes salah might be on penalties but mané tend to so better on the BPS

Mane tends to be better away from home so yes you could argue he’s a better prospect but salah is greedier would therefore he will just shoot all day and eventually they go in. You nailed it though the pens are the deciding factor

      Coin toss

Leeds I suspect will be really awkward opponents. Foresee a game with fewer chances and those coming perhaps on the breakaway. Possession will likely be fairly even and Leeds will try and play a lot in the Liverpool half. Not a standard promoted side at all.

No Leeds will run around like they do under Bielsa and Liverpool will just play around them. I expect a high scoring game

          We’ll see

Leeds may of course be entirely outclassed. But they were the class of the championship by a distance - had they had a goal scorer they would have steam -rollered it.

White is a big loss but they’ve kept the team together and will only be adding a few - not doing a Villa or Fulham. They’re an extremely well drilled side and know their plan inside out.

What interests me is how they will present a challenge by playing up the pitch. They won’t be sitting back and waiting for waves of Liverpool attacks.

Imagine if against the odds Leeds actually win that first match.

However unlikey, wonder if it'll see people piling on their assets in expectation of them being the new Wolves (or more)

Could see the likes of Bamford, Hernandez and Ayling in everyone's GW3 wildcard 😉

Mane could always best Salah for points, but last season was Salah's worst, and he still came out on top. My money would be on Salah reverting to a higher score this year

Going Mane over Salah at two key points last season lost me 50 points in 2 weeks.

      Not gonna do it again.

Also, Salah is just flat out superior when they're the same price. Last season the justification was that Mane was cheaper.

With Mané having such low ownership compared to Salah I like the idea of rolling the dice there. If he bags a couple and Salah gets two points you get a nice early advantage over the hive mind.

Today's task for me is to see what happens if I don't get any Manchester players in in week 2 🙂

Fixtures aren't so very compelling really and this sort of has the air of pre DGW planning on here - with the wrinkle that the DGW players being planned for don't actually have the second fixture!

Also as AS pointed out earlier - there could be considerable angst when placeholders for Manchester fire in week 1

    Just looking

Personally I think you could do without city in gw2 when they play wolves and then get in gw3. Its united that’s more of the head scratcher as they have palace and although palace can be tough to break down, United look very good when they’re on it. I’m waiting to do the Manchester moves in gw3 and I can do it for free or a -4 for a band wagon

Palace were wretched in defence away to top 6 last year. Not really a function of injuries etc but just the overly passive set up. Don't really expect that to change this time.

The Palace game is good one for United for sure - I'll almost certainly get one in anyway. Just want to look at other options - haven't delves that deep into fixtures yet.

Ideally it's a wait and see for United against Palace.

United looked very tired towards the end of the season and the goals had dried up (though not the chances)

I think it's a gample to pile in on United assets before seeing what kind of form they start the season in

Waiting on preseason to see who is back from injury. I'm expecting this right now

            Mitchell Kelly Dann Ward

Fairly sure Dann is around even if not on FPL and think Ward will start season at RB. Ferguson has played LB for WBA but says himself he's more comfortable on the right. If PvA is out it's between him and Mitchell. I'm guessing Mitchell there - it's his natural side and he knows the defensive set up and hasn't been injured for months as Ferguson has

Thanks. Yes I noticed Dann had vanished, assumed he'd retired actually. If one of the 4.0s is a starter would be a big help. Couple of sides that Palace rotate pretty welll with.

              Let's face it mate.
If United don't sign anyone, he'll be a dead pick just like Taa 🙂

From United's point of view, Sanchez is off the books. Lukaku left last season with No real replacement. I can't see United not signing a winger this summer.

One of Lingard and Pereira also looking like leaving. Mata is too old to rely upon now. All pointing towards a winger signing !

But they're likely to sign a RW.

In this scenario you've then benched a non playing 7.5 midfielder for GW1 - possibly at the cost of points elsewhere - and given yourself an unnecessary transfer

His price means it should be straightforward to bring him in around GW3/4 if you still want him.

He's also not going to be a captaincy candidate Vs Palace, so don't need to worry too much about others having him for that game. Not worth the risk for me.

I think it’s sensible. My initial plan is to save a FT in GW2 and make three moves in GW3 to bring in some City & United boys.

On the other hand I may just make Ings/Vardy into Martial in GW2.

The panic, benched premium assets and the wasted early WCs present an opportunity for people able to play without fear I think.

I think that you're right. You'll either be forced to make a very early transfer in GW2/3 or make an extra tranfer which might involve a hit. Having said that, sensible hits early in the season, just to set your team/squad in the right direction, is not necessarily a bad thing.
Maybe a prudent 0.5itb is the way to go?

      1. Salarrivederci

I’ve already planned a hit before the start of GW2.
I swap out 2 of: Son, Ziyech and Werner and I bring in 2 of: Greenwood, Rashford and Martial.

I can see that as a problem only if you’re selling let’s say 7.5 for player that was 7.5 and now is 7.6.
Most of people are selling 8 for 7.5 and 12 for 10.5 etc.
Not the issue in my plans.

One too many 4.0’s, ones ok as you can work around it but 2 and they don’t play is hard work and you’re then having to concentrate on getting one of them out which means downgrading someone to upgrading the 4.0. Personally I would downgrade mitro or Ings and spread the money around

Interesting one for me is that TAA and Robbo may be given little space to operate in

Whatever happens they won’t sit back and give Liverpool the freedom to attack. It probably comes down to how their Uber pressing game works - that’s their forte. Think Southampton and add a little.

With the value in the cheaper united and chelsea attack do you think it's viable to go only one big hitter in terms of their price because i think both of these teams players could end up being big hitters too and u could get 7-9 premium players that way i think.

New signings and Puli in attacking slots. Rumours of Kante leaving so maybe deeper role if starts at all.

Nah sorry, Chelsea have spent well so far and Chilwell’s signing for Chelsea next week so mounts going nowhere near the goal this season. If they sign havertz as well then mounts sitting deep with kante

If he starts regularly and doesn't get injured I really like the look of him. Some great totals couple of seasons back. Prefer Tierney as think you'll get better attacking returns but if you need the .5 Bellerin is an option. Hopefully Arsenal def will tighten up a bit, he's in my team for now.

Saliba and Martinez are the best value Arsenal defenders.

A lot more than last season which could be great value at that price. I think Foden each week with Soucek on the bench may be my approach.

Yeah, that's kinda my current thinking.

        Mccarthy
        TAA - VVD - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.0
        Salah - Auba - Son - Foden - Soucek
        Werner - Mitro - 4.5

352 or 442 depending on cheap defenders fixtures.

Yep that's what I've been thinking too. Effectively Foden as a 7.0m option but with decent chance of points off the bench when he doesn't play.

Would Soucek get enough extra points in the right weeks over a £4.5m though?

I’m looking at TAA, VVD and Doh as a set and forget for the season. You’re right can’t really find a better £6mill option, you could argue mitro but he won’t get cs points

      A. TAA + Rash
      B. VVD + Bruno

I always end up WCing around GW3 so why not plan it in this time instead? I want Bruno/Greenwood/KDB from GW2 and chances are I will play BB in GW1 cause it’s a chip I never score too much from and feel forced me to make suboptimal decisions later in the season.

I hear you, particularly on the BB chip use. I used it on the last day of the season and got next to nothing from it. Have you seen or heard many others taking the same strategy as you?

A couple are. A lot had success with the free transfer and then bench boost strategy after the lockdown but that was an exceptional circumstance. Only in GW1 can you make unlimited moves and BB in the same GW. The caveat being your squad value is lower and you have limited data to go off. But th Manchester clubs being out means there are enough value options elsewhere to use to balance out a decent BB team in my opinion.

And judging by your previous finishes in the game, I'm willing to take your advice on board as I want Man Utd and Man City players from GW2 but also want to take advantage of the first couple of GWs with the likes of Arsenal.

What's your opinion on Pereira and Vardy?

                Pereira from WBA or Leicester?

Vardy I’m not sure on and how time is taking its toll on his legs. Happy to start without and bring in if he hits one of his hot spells. Players like Vardy and Son have historically gone on spells of scoring so easy enough to time and get in once they hit form and have the fixtures.

McCarthy and need another 4.5 GK for BB which is proving tricky.
