How to Play Sky Sports Fantasy Football – A Beginner’s Guide

With the start of a new Premier League season moving ever closer, we switch our focus to Sky Sports Fantasy Football.

£50,000 is on offer to the game’s winner in 2021/22, with cash prizes of £5,000 and £1,000 dished out to those managers finishing in the other two podium places.

The fourth and fifth-placed managers are awarded games consoles, as are the highest-scoring Fantasy bosses of the month.

If you’re new to the Sky game or merely in need of a refresher of the rules and scoring system, we will go over the basics of the game in the article below.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser

HOW DO I PLAY?

TEAM SELECTION

Just like in Fantasy Premier League, managers select a team of players that will either earn attacking, defensive or bonus points in an attempt to score more than friends, colleagues and/or the rest of the world. However, this is not a squad-based game: you choose simply a starting XI and do not have a bench.

The budget, like in FPL, is £100m. There is no quota for players from the same club, however.

TRANSFERS

Game Weeks run from Friday to Thursday with managers allowed transfers in between Match Days, allowing the maximisation of potential points by bringing in an asset yet to play for one who has already been involved that week.

Instead of one free switch per Game Week as per FPL, the Sky Sports game allocates 40 transfers that can be used at any time during the season – with a limit of five in one Game Week – creating the need for a more long-term strategy.

CHIPS

‘Overhauls’ (the equivalent of Wildcards) are also available in Sky Sports, with two being allocated every season in specific periods.

CAPTAINCY

In the Sky Sports game, you can name more than one captain in a Game Week so long as the players in question are in action on different days. For example, if there were fixtures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in any given Game Week, a Sky Sports Fantasy manager could name a different skipper on each of those Match Days, providing they did so before that day’s deadline. Managers can also schedule their captains ahead of a Game Week, too.

HOW DO YOU SCORE POINTS?

The points structure is largely similar to FPL in Sky Sports Fantasy but tends to award more points for the actions mentioned below.

ActionPoints scored
Starting XI2
Substitution appearance1
Goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender7
Goal scored by a midfielder6
Goal scored by a striker5
Goal assist3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper (must play 60+ mins)7
Clean sheet by a defender (must play 60+ mins)5
A penalty save by a goalkeeper5
Man of the Match3

CAN MY TEAM LOSE POINTS?

Unfortunately, just like in FPL there are a few ways to lose points too.

ActionPoints scored
Missing a penalty-3
Every goal conceded from the second goal onwards-1
Each yellow card-1
Each red card-3
Each own goal-2

HOW DO BONUS POINTS WORK?

Just like in FPL, there are additional points on offer for other events in matches – although the structure is slightly different, as you will see below:

Tier 1 ActionPoints scored
3 saves made (GK only)2
4 tackles won2
60 completed passes2
2 shots on target2
Tier 2 ActionPoints scored
5+ saves made (GK only)3
5+ tackles won3
70+ completed passes3
3+ shots on target3

head over to our Premium Members Area to see which players will potentially benefit from the Sky Sports bonus on offer for saves, tackles, passes and shots on target.

HOW DO I PLAY AGAINST MY FRIENDS?

There are a number of different ways to compete against others in the Sky Sports game. You can create or join a Free League with your friends and colleagues but there are ways to win money too.

Sky Sports can actually administer your money league for you to avoid any awkwardness post-season. You can choose the entry fee (either £2, £5, £10 or £20 per person) and the prize structure beforehand and Sky Sports will take care of the rest.

We have already set up our annual, free-to-enter Fantasy Football Scout mini-league, which you can enter by heading to the ‘Leagues’ tab and clicking ‘Join+’.

A hyped up section on the right of this site (under the pic of a team line up) where a person on it debates an fpl question/idea to they have to thier hearts content. Normally a member of the scout team (management on site) create some 'wistful fpl meanderings' there as well. Normally a genesis of a full 'fpl pro pundit' article about thier fpl team.

TAA, Robertson, VVD averaged 190 points last season (20.5m / 27.8PPM) and 202 points (17m / 35.6PPM) the season before.

KDB last season scored 251 points (10.5m / 23.9PPM), Salah over the last 2 seasons has been 18.64PPM & 19.9PPM.

Even at their price, the defence still looks insane value. Maybe I won't get all 3 but I'm tempted, TAA perma-cap.

Definitely. Especially when you compare him to the likes of Werner (9.5) and Vardy (10.0). Martial looks like he'll provide amazing value and a great route into the Utd attack.

When you contextualise it like this he seems a bargain.

Contrary to early thinking I reckon there's actually loads of great striker value this year.

Agreed. I think people still have misconceptions of Martial from the early part of last season.

When you break it down, he's the nailed on number 9 for a free-scoring Utd side with decent fixtures from GW 2.

Who are you expecting the traps be early in the season?

I think Leicester assets, specifically Vardy.

Yes they have great fixtures. But the defensive absences could really undermine them. If they concede early goals they're going to have to chase games, opening them up to conceding more on the break. Not expecting them to make the most of those early fixtures and could be under pressure by the time their defense stabilises.

I was just about to mention this. I agree I think that the full backs will be a big miss, not sure whether the replacements can provide what Chilwell and Perreria did.

I had looked at Vardy but I think I prefer Ings / Ziyech over, say, Vardy / Traoré.

Chelsea - too much to integrate all at once.

0 points after 2 games and only a goal or so to show for it. That'll bring serious pressure to bear on big spending Frank

Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin says the single-game knockout format, used in the Champions League this year from the quarter-final onwards, has produced more exciting football than the usual two-legged games and could be revisited in the future.

Would clubs give up on revenues from ticket sales for Champions League games? That would also mean there are 14 games fewer in the knockout phase and that would diminish the profits of both UEFA and the clubs. I doubt they will agree on that, but let's see.

If it wasn't for -4, then I wouldn't be asking the question to see what people think 🙂

I think I'd like Bruno plus one other Man Utd attacked from GW2 onwards. I could bench Greenwood and swap a biig hitter for Bruno with a FT, but not sure Greenwood is the one to have.

true... I can see myself having one of either Kane or Son for GW1, but don't get why I would transfer them out after one game. It's not like Everton is an amazing fixture, and Spurs are hardly explosive.

Guess I still haven't found the magic ticket yet.

I think I just prefer the cheaper Chelsea attackers as Lampard is more of an offensive coach. Also Brighton were do poor during the run-in, although they have got a million centre halves to chose from now!

Liverpool in GW2 is a bit of a spanner. I think I'll start with Werner, then consider a switch to Martial. If he explodes vs Brighton then obviously I'll find another way.

Ziyech is a wait and see.

That's the thing though, Fulham inspired very little confidence all the way through last season. I feel after 2 or 3 gws it will be quite obvious whether he can go on a sustained run with the team providing for him or whether we're buggered.

Some are planning this. I am not a fan. Gameweek 2 is definitely too early especially as 4 teams won't have played a single match!

What does all in on gameweek 1 look like compared to a normal squad anyway. Salah and mane with auba and pepe and triple chelsea attack?

I'm not sure tbh. I just tried putting a BB squad together and would certainly need a couple of the 4.0 defenders starting (Ferguson and Johnson).

The benefit I see is that you can have triple Man Utd for GW2 plus KdB, without having future transfers planned.

Yes, everyone should do this. So I'm the only one who hasn't wasted 2 chips with 36 GW's to go.

      Gedson if Aurier is sold.

Gedson is a £5m midfielder, I’d say Davies is your best bet.

Only issue is that Gedson is classified as a midfielder.........what’s the next best option if Aurier is sold?

Dier is apparently first choice centre back. Wait to see how preseason goes though.

Gedson is a midfielder, even if he played a kind of RB role against Ipswich. I'd imagine we'll be in for a new RB if Aurier is sold. We have Tanganga or Foyth, possibly Sissoko if desperate.

Different perspective: Alli scored 4.7 ppm last season, the 12th highest MID, a bit under the radar and higher than many other MID's talked about ad nauseum on this site. Against opponents with FDR of 2 (or better, although there were no FDR's of 1 last season), he averaged 6.1 ppm (+30%). TOT face FDR 2 opponents 6 times in the first 8 GW's. Could be a sneaky differential at only 1.2% ownership.
Ziyech scored 0 points in the EPL last season so he's anybody guess.
I'm probably going Son, and possibly Kane, so most likely won't have Alli in my roster, but just wanted to give you something factual to think about.

The trouble is that you don't know who you're getting with Alli - he can be world class or sunday morning pub team. No doubting his inherent quality but his attitude & form are all over the shop.

He’s rubbish now... had one good season at a push one and a half.. mourinho should sell him

Yes, Alli would be a high variance option no doubt. But I would venture that Ziyech, having never played in the EPL and not necessarily even nailed GW1 until we see more preseason, doesn't offer much more certainty. I also wouldn't say Alli is "rubbish", mainly because even though it may or may not be true, it would be a pretty useless comment based on opinion rather than analysis.

Views on this team- benching Martial for week 1 and ability to get KDB and Greenwood in week 2/3?

    McCarthy
    TAA Doherty Vinagre
    Salah KDB Armstrong ASM Soucek
    Werner Mitrovic

    Nyland Ayling Ferguson Martial

Current team - building around set/forget of Salah, TAA, VVD and Doherty - any thoughts?

    McCarthy
    TAA VVD Doherty Justin
    Salah Auba Son Ritchie
    Vardy Mitrovic

    Nyland Stephens Ferguson Wickham

    Only question I had was:

    a) Vardy + mitrovic, or
    b) Jimenez + Richarlison

In consideration, just unsure on a player new to prem until I have seen how he performs in first 2/3 games... rather put money on proven prem players initially!

Very good team, I’m looking at this but it’s a bit too rigid to get city and united in. Auba to KDB yes but it may have to be Werner/vardy to martial. A for now

I have possibly changed it to Jimi and Mitro up top. This then allows the following:

Son > Fernandes game week 2
Auba > KDB/Sterling game week 3 (don't fancy it for wolves away)

Don't like Ritchie, personally I'd downgrade him and VVD to get an 8.5 forward in place of Mitro. But it's decent.

Might change Richie for Hojbjerg, assuming he continues in pre season as he has done. Take the point, could downgrade VVD to Gomez and then get Ings for Mitro - a few options anyway.

Triple Liverpool D? ppm value is the best around and TAA is surely captaincy material for plum Liverpool fixtures. I'm tempted.

It’s a bold strategy and could prove very effective but there will be frustrating GWs where Salah and Mané haul and Liverpool win 4-1 for example. For a set and forget team it would be a great approach.

Set and forget defence which leaves me free to concentrate on value moves up top. Salah or Mane will punish badly some weeks though no doubt.

I like the double up but not from the start. Only see a few clean sheets to start the season. Will get extra defender on wildcard when we have a better run for defensive prospects.

i'm also tempted, excellent value, allows me to virtually set and forget defence (have doherty too) and then can just focus on swapping between city/utd/chelsea assets for my attacking output, however i might play safe and start with double pool defence plus salah, still mulling it over

Triple up is crazy talk.. just because it means you don’t have Salah or Mane in your team..

No offense but only a crazy fool would triple up, you would have to be a bit silly
