How to Play Sky Sports Fantasy Football – A Beginner’s Guide

With the start of a new Premier League season moving ever closer, we switch our focus to Sky Sports Fantasy Football.

£50,000 is on offer to the game’s winner in 2021/22, with cash prizes of £5,000 and £1,000 dished out to those managers finishing in the other two podium places.

The fourth and fifth-placed managers are awarded games consoles, as are the highest-scoring Fantasy bosses of the month.

If you’re new to the Sky game or merely in need of a refresher of the rules and scoring system, we will go over the basics of the game in the article below.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser

HOW DO I PLAY?

TEAM SELECTION

Just like in Fantasy Premier League, managers select a team of players that will either earn attacking, defensive or bonus points in an attempt to score more than friends, colleagues and/or the rest of the world. However, this is not a squad-based game: you choose simply a starting XI and do not have a bench.

The budget, like in FPL, is £100m. There is no quota for players from the same club, however.

TRANSFERS

Game Weeks run from Friday to Thursday with managers allowed transfers in between Match Days, allowing the maximisation of potential points by bringing in an asset yet to play for one who has already been involved that week.

Instead of one free switch per Game Week as per FPL, the Sky Sports game allocates 40 transfers that can be used at any time during the season – with a limit of five in one Game Week – creating the need for a more long-term strategy.

CHIPS

‘Overhauls’ (the equivalent of Wildcards) are also available in Sky Sports, with two being allocated every season in specific periods.

CAPTAINCY

In the Sky Sports game, you can name more than one captain in a Game Week so long as the players in question are in action on different days. For example, if there were fixtures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in any given Game Week, a Sky Sports Fantasy manager could name a different skipper on each of those Match Days, providing they did so before that day’s deadline. Managers can also schedule their captains ahead of a Game Week, too.

HOW DO YOU SCORE POINTS?

The points structure is largely similar to FPL in Sky Sports Fantasy but tends to award more points for the actions mentioned below.

ActionPoints scored
Starting XI2
Substitution appearance1
Goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender7
Goal scored by a midfielder6
Goal scored by a striker5
Goal assist3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper (must play 60+ mins)7
Clean sheet by a defender (must play 60+ mins)5
A penalty save by a goalkeeper5
Man of the Match3

CAN MY TEAM LOSE POINTS?

Unfortunately, just like in FPL there are a few ways to lose points too.

ActionPoints scored
Missing a penalty-3
Every goal conceded from the second goal onwards-1
Each yellow card-1
Each red card-3
Each own goal-2

HOW DO BONUS POINTS WORK?

Just like in FPL, there are additional points on offer for other events in matches – although the structure is slightly different, as you will see below:

Tier 1 ActionPoints scored
3 saves made (GK only)2
4 tackles won2
60 completed passes2
2 shots on target2
Tier 2 ActionPoints scored
5+ saves made (GK only)3
5+ tackles won3
70+ completed passes3
3+ shots on target3

head over to our Premium Members Area to see which players will potentially benefit from the Sky Sports bonus on offer for saves, tackles, passes and shots on target.

HOW DO I PLAY AGAINST MY FRIENDS?

There are a number of different ways to compete against others in the Sky Sports game. You can create or join a Free League with your friends and colleagues but there are ways to win money too.

Sky Sports can actually administer your money league for you to avoid any awkwardness post-season. You can choose the entry fee (either £2, £5, £10 or £20 per person) and the prize structure beforehand and Sky Sports will take care of the rest.

We have already set up our annual, free-to-enter Fantasy Football Scout mini-league, which you can enter by heading to the â€˜Leagues’ tab and clicking â€˜Join+’.

        This.

Do whatever you think will get you the most points. It'd be boring if everyone does the same thing.

Could be. Will be watching Son very closely vs Everton to see how far he gets forward, may decide to keep.

Try to spot where the masses are overlooking a decent captain option (Salah vs Watford (H) last season when Vardy had NOR and everyone had Mane instead was one, Aguero away at AVL was another) and transfer them in. Works a treat when they score 16+ points - will be a nightmare if you get it wrong. Double edged sword.

I've stumbled on this. About the only squad I'm happy with that doesn't require a FT in GW2 (at least on paper).

    McCarthy
    TAA - Vinagre - KWP - Ferguson
    Salah - JWP - Son - Aubameyang
    Werner - Mitrovic

    Nyland - Greenwood - Taylor - Brewster

    Too weak for GW1?

I think it's boils down to this or swapping out Greenwood for fodder and leaving 1.5m ITB for Son > Bruno.

I would prefer Bruno over Greenwood tbh. If I knew Son was going to play centrally with Kane, he'd be a season keeper for me, but watching him stranded out on the left post lockdown was depressing.

I'm kinda with Doosra on this. We should be able to pick a player worth 7.5m that has a good chance of scoring 6 or more points, to make even a hit worthwhile.

      Have different solution

      MCCarthy (Steer)
      TAA KWP Vinagre Mitchell (AWB)
      Mo Auba Koucek (Greenwood) (4.5)
      Vardy Jim Mitro

Could put JWP in midfield but bigger upside I suspect to having free AWB home to Palace in 2

AWB plus Mitro to become premium defender when wanted.

Ah Keita - looking at a draft with Hendo to run to WC when heavy defence comes in. Lower ceiling I guess but otherwise king of 5.5s. Just don’t know enough about Keita

Don’t trust Mitro enough to have him as 2nd forward and not many places to go afterwards.

Do like Shaw though and may trade AwB in if he’s back and fit

Instead of chasing points and form plus taking hits sometimes to do so, wondering if anyone has instead, avoided players that scored that week previously and made transfers possibly of those who scored for ones who score well in seasons but haven't for a week or two.

Oh ok. I've only seen people saying they use transfers and take hits for players in form who scored the previous week and often the following week(s) they don't score for them but the player they transferred out does.
I'm going to give this a whirl more often and keep a record of how it goes. Good or bad I may write a post about it further into the season. Thanks for replying

My thoughts on Spurs and notes from the first pre-season friendly yesterday:

Ostensibly a 4-4-2 line-up but changes in attack, Gedson was playing the advanced right-back role.

Son up top with Alli, Alli playing a little deeper, seemingly given license to move around.

Sess started on the left wing, playing in front of Davies at left-back. Hojbjerg and Winks in the middle. Toby was the left-sided centre-back, Foyth the right-sided centre-back.

We played Ipswich, who were pretty dreadful.

A feature of the first half was Toby playing long balls out from the back, particularly towards Gedson on the right wing. Gedson improved as the half went on, I thought. He played that position a few times last season, coming on as a sub for Aurier (who could be sold this summer). I'm interested to see who ends up in the advanced right-back berth, particularly if that player is listed as a defender in FPL - Gedson is not. I'm not convinced about Gedson: too lightweight when I've seen him in the PL. But he could well have a role to play given the intensity of the schedule.

Kane missed out because he's isolating: his holiday destination, the Bahamas, was added to the UK quarantine list. He's expected back in training next week. I fancy him to start against Everton and he will hopefully feature in one or more of the pre-season matches. Therefore Son may not play through the middle as he did against Ipswich. The goals:

1-0 Alli played in Sess, who cut inside from the left.
2-0 Hojbjerg interception, ball fell to Alli, who teed up Son.
3-0 Foyth pass (he'd pushed up from right centre-back) Son nice finish.

    The goals: https://twitter.com/SpursOfficial/status/1297443460484456448
    The full match: https://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/tags/spurstv/

Good performance from Hojbjerg. He was energetic, he looks like a leader and encouraged those around him. For instance, applauding Winks following a well-timed interception. A round peg in a round hole, very much what we needed in that position in my opinion. Hopefully he improves our clean sheet count.

Speaking of leaders, Mourinho made an astute addition to his coaching staff, appointing Ledley King as First Team Assistant https://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/2020/august/ledley-joins-first-team-staff/ and Joe Hart's experience is another boon to the dressing room.

In attack, Alli and Son interest me for FPL, as will Kane when he returns. No surprises there. Alli, at £8.0m, could be a bargain if his hamstrings don't let him down. I think Mourinho's first match in charge against West Ham last season is still a good indicator of how we can expect his attack to function. Alli could also support Kane in a front two.

Also worth noting that Son took corners from both sides of the pitch.

Whoever is the advanced right-back, especially if they are listed as a defender in FPL, will be on my watchlist.

It's been suggested that Sess could play as an advanced left-back if Mourinho decided to get a more defensive player at right-back (or perhaps Foyth could play there?). This would suit Sess's qualities well, but I'm not sure it works: none of our centre-backs are left footed, and if you have the left-back charging up the pitch, the left centre-back needs to cover the left-back position - having a right-footed player playing left-back feels wrong (although this happened when Davies was injured last season).

Mourinho's system works well with an advanced right-back because Sanchez or Foyth have a bit of pace and can cover the right-back slot. If you were feeling creative, you could try Davies as left centre-back and Sess as an attacking left-back. With maybe Toby and Foyth on the right side of defence. But an attacking left-back with Son ahead of him? I don't like it.

So I think Sess will offer back-up for Son in the left wing / inside-left position. Lots of matches to play this season and Son does get tired. I think Sess will get opportunities there, of course there is also Steven Bergwijn. But Sess has the advantage of being naturally left-footed, Bergwijn is right-footed.

I would like to see Spurs add cover for the left-back position because I don't think Sess is a good left-back. He's not a natural defender imo. 18-year-old Dennis Cirkin came on for Davies at half-time yesterday. And he did ok to be fair, but I'd want someone else as the reserve left-back for the start of the season. When Davies was injured last year it caused problems for the defence.

But I expect our defence to improve this season, and players like Davies, and perhaps Dier or Foyth - if either of them can secure a starting position - could benefit in terms of clean sheets. I don't expect much attacking output from them. But for £5.0m (or £4.5m in the case of Foyth) that could be good value. Although, we have a number of players to come back and it will be interesting to see how we line-up in the upcoming friendly matches.

Spurs play on Friday and Saturday v Reading and Birmingham, then play Watford on Saturday 5 September at Vicarage Road.

Final thought, he's not listed in FPL (yet) and there's plenty of competition ahead of him, but Jack Clarke looked good when he came on in the second-half. Signed from Leeds last year, it would be nice to see him get more minutes. If he goes out on loan to a PL club he could be one to keep on eye on.

Bit of a mix really, Alli found himself on the left once or twice as well. It wasn't a Shearer-Sutton type partnership nor was Alli a strict number 10 either.

Great stuff. Seems like Hojbjerg is a much better ballwinner and fit for that CDM role than Sissoko or Winks, which is a big benefit to a Mourinho side.

      Great post mate!

If I remember it right Dier was starting every game before his ban. I think he's the most nailed CB there. Alderweireld, Sanchez and Vertonghen all were rotated

      Thanks for this

Son is locked in to my team barring incident, and I think he's potentially horribly underpriced. He's pretty comfortably a 200 point player if he ever gets the same minutes as the premiums, and that's evidenced by his points per minute over multiple seasons....

I think Alli could get over 200 points if he plays 3,000 minutes or close. And Alli is only £8m!

I think Son, when he looks sharp and fit, is excellent value for money. Slightly worried about the effect of an intense fixture schedule on him, but hopefully Mourinho will use him more in PL matches than cups. He's in my team for GW1.

Yeah he did start well when Mourinho came in and then his performance level, and the team's, dropped after a few games.

In the case of Alli, he started last season with a hamstring injury and I don't think he got the running into his legs in pre-season to ensure his body was strong enough to sustain a high performance level for the whole campaign.

Hamstring problems are a real concern and have been for some time - I count six hamstring injuries over the last three seasons. It's fairly obvious they are hampering his career.

After his latest set back during the restart, I think it was wise that Mourinho didn't bring him back into the team - apart from a 10min appearance in the final match. Alli needs to get his body strong, he needs a good pre-season to give himself a foundation to build on.

We know he has the talent, Mourinho knows he has the talent, we saw him show his talent when Mourinho joined the club. Now he needs his body to support him, and he needs to support his body. I expect the club are doing all they can to help him physically and mentally - it must be very hard for him to keep having these hamstring problems.

Forget FPL for a moment, thinking of Spurs and England, a fit and strong Dele Alli could be a world class talent, I think he's that good, he makes a big difference to both teams. And he's still only 24! There's so much more to come from him, I hope...

The rumours are that he will be sold, Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan the two clubs interested. The international transfer window doesn't close until Monday 5 October (the domestic transfer window closes on Friday 16 October, so PL clubs can still trade with EFL clubs until then). Hopefully Levy breaks the habit of a lifetime and concludes the transfer sooner rather than later to give time to buy a replacement. We might see other players used in the RB role until that situation is resolved: maybe Tanganga or Sissoko even. Or maybe the transfer doesn't happen and Aurier stays, who knows.

          Thanks TopMarx,

          That's typical, and I didn't know.

Do you think Mourinho won't play Aurier until the 5th of October then?

Have to find 0.5 for Doherty.

I think if he stays at the club he's the best player we have in that position - although certainly better going forward than defending. But I'm not sure how Mourinho would deal that situation, hopefully it is resolved before then. It will be interesting to see if Aurier features in any of the pre-season matches.

I'm on Doherty and Alli currently, and I will add one of Kane or Son.

As I mentioned in that members article on Doherty, I questioned whether he's been bought to replicate Aurier's role or for his own attacking qualities, namely getting into the box and scoring goals. And the answer is I think he will get into the box and score goals (as well as assist). It's what Ivanovic did, it's what Maicon did, it fits Doherty's skillset and I think he will prove to be excellent value for money. And it's a relatively easy tactical shift, Moura (or whoever is right-wing) can pull wide so Doherty can underlap. I don't think they will do that every time, but I think they will do it.

Alli as a support striker who assists and scores, who has the confidence of his manager, is in my team. The only doubt is fitness. But around his price point there are decent options, so very happy to start with him and hope he stays fit.

Son looked good but I'm worried Kane will return centrally and that will diminish his appeal. Although I do find it interesting that Son played down the middle in all three pre-season matches so far. Hopefully he plays v Watford this weekend too.

It's annoying that Spurs have been drawn away twice in the Europa League but i'm hoping the main players are kept fresh for the PL.

So I will be listening out for more clues.

The good thing about getting Kane is that he's an easy swap to Aguero (same price), so again if it doesn't work out I could get Aguero for GW3.

Dier and Davies I think will both be good options too.

Well I'm asking myself similar questions about formation.

But I do think we have a bias towards mids and forwards when that's not always the best value. For instance, I heard someone say the other day that if Ings got 80% of last season's points then he would still be good value. Well I don't agree, I think he'd be ok value: 160pts at £8.5m. I expect Doherty to get 160 or 150points and at £6.0m that makes him significantly better value.

Ings last season was £6.0m and got 198points, that's exceptional value! So in terms of formation it's identifying those players who will do much better than expected. Are there mids and forwards who are under valued? Doherty feels like a safe bet to do well for his price. But a £6.0m player getting 200 points would better!

I'm approaching this season thinking 25 points per million is a good guide to price. So an £8.0m player gets 200 points. Obviously captaincy changes things, so this only applies to non-premium players. And I know points aren't consistent in the season, so changing players at the right moment is important. Anyway, those are my thought!

Fair points mate. The one thing i think about is, yes the likes of doherty could be exceptional value but he will get the majority of his points through clean sheets and if you can try and cover his clean sheets with budget defenders and if you have a cheap midfielder that gets a decent amount of assists and goals he can match/better the premium defender.

Yes, Davies is nailed imo. Cirkin probably too young to be trusted in the PL, Sess more an attacking option, not as good defensively.

Final query 🙂 I love the prospect of Doherty but my current views on it are that if Aurier doesnt leave, I'm going to avoid for gw1 due to potential rotation. Is that in your thinking as well or do you still think hes worth the gamble?
