How to Play Sky Sports Fantasy Football – A Beginner’s Guide

With the start of a new Premier League season moving ever closer, we switch our focus to Sky Sports Fantasy Football.

£50,000 is on offer to the game’s winner in 2021/22, with cash prizes of £5,000 and £1,000 dished out to those managers finishing in the other two podium places.

The fourth and fifth-placed managers are awarded games consoles, as are the highest-scoring Fantasy bosses of the month.

If you’re new to the Sky game or merely in need of a refresher of the rules and scoring system, we will go over the basics of the game in the article below.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser

HOW DO I PLAY?

TEAM SELECTION

Just like in Fantasy Premier League, managers select a team of players that will either earn attacking, defensive or bonus points in an attempt to score more than friends, colleagues and/or the rest of the world. However, this is not a squad-based game: you choose simply a starting XI and do not have a bench.

The budget, like in FPL, is £100m. There is no quota for players from the same club, however.

TRANSFERS

Game Weeks run from Friday to Thursday with managers allowed transfers in between Match Days, allowing the maximisation of potential points by bringing in an asset yet to play for one who has already been involved that week.

Instead of one free switch per Game Week as per FPL, the Sky Sports game allocates 40 transfers that can be used at any time during the season – with a limit of five in one Game Week – creating the need for a more long-term strategy.

CHIPS

‘Overhauls’ (the equivalent of Wildcards) are also available in Sky Sports, with two being allocated every season in specific periods.

CAPTAINCY

In the Sky Sports game, you can name more than one captain in a Game Week so long as the players in question are in action on different days. For example, if there were fixtures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in any given Game Week, a Sky Sports Fantasy manager could name a different skipper on each of those Match Days, providing they did so before that day’s deadline. Managers can also schedule their captains ahead of a Game Week, too.

HOW DO YOU SCORE POINTS?

The points structure is largely similar to FPL in Sky Sports Fantasy but tends to award more points for the actions mentioned below.

ActionPoints scored
Starting XI2
Substitution appearance1
Goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender7
Goal scored by a midfielder6
Goal scored by a striker5
Goal assist3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper (must play 60+ mins)7
Clean sheet by a defender (must play 60+ mins)5
A penalty save by a goalkeeper5
Man of the Match3

CAN MY TEAM LOSE POINTS?

Unfortunately, just like in FPL there are a few ways to lose points too.

ActionPoints scored
Missing a penalty-3
Every goal conceded from the second goal onwards-1
Each yellow card-1
Each red card-3
Each own goal-2

HOW DO BONUS POINTS WORK?

Just like in FPL, there are additional points on offer for other events in matches – although the structure is slightly different, as you will see below:

Tier 1 ActionPoints scored
3 saves made (GK only)2
4 tackles won2
60 completed passes2
2 shots on target2
Tier 2 ActionPoints scored
5+ saves made (GK only)3
5+ tackles won3
70+ completed passes3
3+ shots on target3

head over to our Premium Members Area to see which players will potentially benefit from the Sky Sports bonus on offer for saves, tackles, passes and shots on target.

HOW DO I PLAY AGAINST MY FRIENDS?

There are a number of different ways to compete against others in the Sky Sports game. You can create or join a Free League with your friends and colleagues but there are ways to win money too.

Sky Sports can actually administer your money league for you to avoid any awkwardness post-season. You can choose the entry fee (either £2, £5, £10 or £20 per person) and the prize structure beforehand and Sky Sports will take care of the rest.

We have already set up our annual, free-to-enter Fantasy Football Scout mini-league, which you can enter by heading to the â€˜Leagues’ tab and clicking â€˜Join+’.

    First post fixture release draft.
Any feedback to make it better - changes you would make?
Greenwood benched for GW1 but Probably a 451 after that. Any doubts on any of the 11 starting as GW1 does not have a bench?

    McCarthy

    TAA VVD Aurier Egan Vinagre

    Salah Auba Barnes Armstrong

    Werner

    Steer Greenwood Wickham Davis

Not a fan of 4-5-1. Would downgrade VvD to boost one of them up.

Also would pick up Doherty to start the season.

If Brewster gets a loan deal and is expected to start, I might go for 4-5-1. It has flexibility issues though.

For the whole season ultimately so I don’t have to move in it. I think TAA, VVD and doh are sets and forgets for the season so work with whatever you have left for the rest of the team. You only need a playing 4.5 def to cover in case one is out

Agree, TAA - VVD - Doh is set and forget for the season. My thinking is given that early on it is difficult having all 3 without sacrifices in midfield premiums, I would rather split my eggs in 2 baskets and go TAA + Doh. You can always add VVD down the line as the season progresses.

Yeah very true, especially if it means using the difference to get city and united in. Just think it’s one less headache to worry about that’s all

One less headache and about 3.5m less budget...

The hardest thing about early on in the season is having the means and transfers to get on the bandwagons that appear. If you handcuff yourself to a premium defense early on, you severely limit your abiility to get on the emerging bandwagons.

Why not just wait until GW3?

LEE che ARS aren't exactly amazing transfers for defense. Frees up 2.0m that you can use to chase good bandwagons. If everything goes up in smoke, you can WC in GW3 or 4 and get back your premium defense (especially since they are highly owned and won't go up in price...)

*fixtures for defense. I think Liverpool can easily concede in all 3 of those games.

Maybe but it all comes down to trying to minimize the amount of transfers over the first few weeks and not taking hits. If I can get away with Auba to Sterling in GW3 and one more transfer then happy days.

So what I am trying to say is I am trying g to have at least 5-6 set and forget and only use transfers for the other positions.

Replies very much agree with the slightly different drafts I was looking at - most had Doherty And it would have to be for VVD. That .5 spare might be useful for price changes etc. Double Wolves defence might be good but I don’t know about it for the first 2 weeks. Should I get a different 4.5 for Vinagre if getting Doherty for VVD?

    McCarthy - 4.0
    TAA - Doherty - Justin - 4.5 - 4.0
    Salah - Auba - Son - Armstrong - Ritchie/Soucek
    Werner - Mitro - 4.5

I don't like Son for one week vs playing the 4.5m defender + a transfer.

Just get Fernandes straight up. Son would have to score more than the 4.5m defender + 4 points. And if he does manage to do that, will you want to make the Fernandes transfer at all or just keep him?

It is but weigh the odds. I reckon at the start of the season, better to get nailed on players you'll want long term right away. You can have a few slots for speculative picks. But hokey cokeys I just really don't like.

It costs a transfer. That transfer might be free in GW2 but it is worth 4 points and you will need it. It's way short term thinking to force a GW2 transfer at the start of the season when you can prepare adequately without it. Furthermore there are no outstanding one week punts that I can see. Everton are not a mug side. If say Spurs had FUL or WBA maybe it would be worth it, but there is no one worth a one week punt.

By getting Bruno right away, you open yourself up the option of rolling in GW2 and then in GW3 you have 2 FTs to do like Auba out + use the money.

Point is, that transfer is an opportunity cost and is worth 4 points.

It's not worth -4 if the rest of your team are long term picks a d you can easily save up 2 transfers again

Start of the season though with this much uncertainty? I highly, highly doubt that things will go according to plan. Someone will get injured or one of the touted 4.5ms won't start. Transfers are a premium at the start of the season. Always.

I've considered benching Bruno but in the end I think you end up less safe because with the tight budget at the start you won't have a bench for gw1 if you bench Bruno and play your first bench player. That looks risky to me because there could always be a surprise benching and then you have 10 players.

You have a point there... I guess it comes down to how confident you are in your 4.5m selections. We need to get closer to the start of the season, have reports come out, new signings etc. Still a lot of time where things can change.

I will be very surprised for instance if Vinagre remains first choice LWB. And if he doesn't start, a whole lot of drafts are going to be ripped up and started again...

Part of the reason why ultimately I decided to splurge an extra £1.5 and get Doherty from the get-go. Vinagre may be good, but minutes aren't guaranteed if they got another LB

Werner is nailed on for me, the only other dilemma was Ziyech or Pulisic. In which case Pulisic would have taken it every time, he was genuinely looking like Hazard since the restart. Insane dribbling, end product, effectiveness, the complete package. Also was listening to FMLFPL and they noted how Ziyech crosses benefited the LW of the Ajax side, so much so that the players playing CF and RW swapped goal tallies depending on where they played. Pulisic is very underpriced this year and I doubt we'll be seeing that again anytime soon.

Ziyech. With Pulisic, however, what concerns me is his fitness. I agree with the poster above saying that lw benefitted from ziyech's through balls. His left foot seems deadly and people with pace i.e.: Werner and puli should reap the rewards, maybe even Alonso also, I can even see giroud getting on the end with some headers. Ziyech should be on free kicks also. Could be the new kdb if all things click for him

How much reliance do players put on the RMT valuations? The Captain Sensible articles seem to give it short shrift among the different analysis tools and the choices in the Scout Squad and Scout Picks – other than the obvious Salah, KVB etc. - often are a far cry from the RTM ratings for the week.

Interesting it was you who wrote that because as long as things can be kept to plan I am going with a front three that you had at one point but I believe I saw you had moved off of it.

          Ings, Jimenez, Werner

It caught my eye because I had them in for a couple of days before I saw yours plus I'm always looking for it in managers teams posting. I immediately scanned the rest of your team when I spotted yours. Actually can't recall seeing anyone else doing it but no doubt I missed their RMT's.

CPL / NEW is interesting for the first half of the season:

SOU, BHA, EVE, BUR, BHA, ful, EVE, LEE, bur, NEW, avl, WBA, lee, FUL, avl, LEI*, SHU, shu

Otherwise best I could manage was:

      1) Start with CPL / NEW defenders
      2) GW6 switch NEW to AVL defender
      3) GW12 switch CPL to NEW defender
      4) GW15 switch AVL to BUR defender

First 17 GWs will give you:

SOU, BHA, EVE, BUR, BHA, LEE, SOU, LEE, BHA, NEW, NEW, WBA, BUR, FUL, CPL, SHU, FUL

Meets the criteria of avoiding the Top 8 and having home fixtures. Very little transfer cost

Been reading comments from experienced community players and will probably go with team below for GW1.

    McCarthy
    TAA - Egan - Doherty
    Salah - Son – Aubameyang - Amstrong - Soucek
    Vardy - Mitrovic

    Nyland - Ferguson – Justin - Wickham

I’m not convinced on doubling up on either Liverpool or Wolves defenders for the early fixtures as others seem to be and don’t like benching expensive assets in GW1.

Plan to make double change in GW3 for MU/MC or Chelsea players depending on how early form looks.

    Any views?

Soucek is OK for me. Arsenal are pretty bad at conceding from set pieces too (GW2 fixture), and he has scored 24 goals over the last two seasons, so worth a gamble.

      Sound strategy overall I guess.

I disagree with two things personally, but this is just my particular view point and is not more correct than yours by any means.

      1. Doubling on Wolves defense. I think it's absolutely worth doing. Wolves had unbelievable defensive stats at the end of last year. They have no European commitments this year either. The fixtures they have are also outstanding for the first 8 weeks. Only MCI is a bad fixture and you can double up on Wolves and bench the one that isn't Doherty for that game.

      2. Benching expensive assets in GW1. Untied have Palace at home in GW2. One of the juiciest fixtures you could ask for considering Palace's current dilapidated state. Furthermore, they have 4 of the most underpriced attacking assets in the game to choose from. Value wise, all 4 of the United attackers are absolute gold. Bruno could be a 250 point+ monster, Rashford is a 9.5m OoP player proven for 200 points, Martial got MORE attacking returns than Bruno post lockdown, Greenwood is a relatively budget OoP player who posted elite goals/minute ratios. I don't think going without at least one in GW2 is wise. Preferably 2,

Anyone else thinking about United and City's lack of pre-season?

Likes of Liverpool and Spurs are playing pre-season friendlies with the season still three weeks away. Other teams have just started their summer break and will have 1 / 2 (at most) warm up games before being thrown in the deep end of a new premier League campaign. Versus teams who've had much better preparation.

Wonder if this means the Manchester clubs are being over priortised. Thoughts?

I'm keeping an open mind. I want to wait and see if I can avoid succumbing to early pressure to bring them in. Open to avoiding until a GW8 wildcard

I will probably WC before that. But MUN are in an unholy mess, and City's defence is all over the place. But we will see.

Maguire arrested in Cypress. The story has yet to come out. I would bet on the dressing room being pretty disturbed, and it is not the greatest place anyway.

Apparently a couple of United players were with him, at least earlier in the day - Rashford included.

Totally agree. We saw after Project Restart the increase in clean sheets that came from sluggish performances. Current plan is to only own Martial from each until at least GW8, after which a WC with triple City is the plan. Keeping an open mind though, if Aguero gets a clear (C) opportunity at Leicester or West Ham it would be a no-brainer switch. KDB in my thoughts too but I'm not bothered over missing out on him for a while. Nobody besides Martial from United entering my thinking.

Don't worry about him, as long as he is expected to start, it's worth a punt.

Who are you playing in B? Looks like KWP away at CPL?

If so, B by a country mile given that you want Bruno anyway.

      1. Flynny

        Yes. I'll play KWP.....

So I guess it is KWP v son for one week....

Clearly son likely to do better....But not needing to make the transfer gw2 to bring in bruno is worthwhile too...

        I don't know....could go either way

Reckon KWP averages out at around 3 points or so in that fixture - you're right in that there's a cost to bring Bruno in in GW2 (probably not the full 4 points for a hit, but probably not far off - it's the hit or opportunity cost of not making another transfer further down the line).

So you need Son to average out between 6-7 points in that one fixture. It's close, but he doesn't quite make it for me.

Incidentally the reason I think it's not close is because of your other two options - I think Doherty is so much better than Dier it makes it not a contest.

            Cheers mate.....

I generally don't like doubling up on defenders - and not convinced doherty worth the additional o we vinagre....plus I think dier is a good price....

No probs - Dier is a good price and not a bad option!

Hi, this probably sounds like a strange question but here goes! I’d like to join more ‘pay’ leagues, in addition to the ones I’m already in. However the obvious issue there is the money side, as in placing trust in complete strangers. Has anyone found a way of doing this? Like the prize fund being held in some kind of mutual place?? Thanks
