How to Play Sky Sports Fantasy Football – A Beginner’s Guide

With the start of a new Premier League season moving ever closer, we switch our focus to Sky Sports Fantasy Football.

£50,000 is on offer to the game’s winner in 2021/22, with cash prizes of £5,000 and £1,000 dished out to those managers finishing in the other two podium places.

The fourth and fifth-placed managers are awarded games consoles, as are the highest-scoring Fantasy bosses of the month.

If you’re new to the Sky game or merely in need of a refresher of the rules and scoring system, we will go over the basics of the game in the article below.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser

HOW DO I PLAY?

TEAM SELECTION

Just like in Fantasy Premier League, managers select a team of players that will either earn attacking, defensive or bonus points in an attempt to score more than friends, colleagues and/or the rest of the world. However, this is not a squad-based game: you choose simply a starting XI and do not have a bench.

The budget, like in FPL, is £100m. There is no quota for players from the same club, however.

TRANSFERS

Game Weeks run from Friday to Thursday with managers allowed transfers in between Match Days, allowing the maximisation of potential points by bringing in an asset yet to play for one who has already been involved that week.

Instead of one free switch per Game Week as per FPL, the Sky Sports game allocates 40 transfers that can be used at any time during the season – with a limit of five in one Game Week – creating the need for a more long-term strategy.

CHIPS

‘Overhauls’ (the equivalent of Wildcards) are also available in Sky Sports, with two being allocated every season in specific periods.

CAPTAINCY

In the Sky Sports game, you can name more than one captain in a Game Week so long as the players in question are in action on different days. For example, if there were fixtures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in any given Game Week, a Sky Sports Fantasy manager could name a different skipper on each of those Match Days, providing they did so before that day’s deadline. Managers can also schedule their captains ahead of a Game Week, too.

HOW DO YOU SCORE POINTS?

The points structure is largely similar to FPL in Sky Sports Fantasy but tends to award more points for the actions mentioned below.

ActionPoints scored
Starting XI2
Substitution appearance1
Goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender7
Goal scored by a midfielder6
Goal scored by a striker5
Goal assist3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper (must play 60+ mins)7
Clean sheet by a defender (must play 60+ mins)5
A penalty save by a goalkeeper5
Man of the Match3

CAN MY TEAM LOSE POINTS?

Unfortunately, just like in FPL there are a few ways to lose points too.

ActionPoints scored
Missing a penalty-3
Every goal conceded from the second goal onwards-1
Each yellow card-1
Each red card-3
Each own goal-2

HOW DO BONUS POINTS WORK?

Just like in FPL, there are additional points on offer for other events in matches – although the structure is slightly different, as you will see below:

Tier 1 ActionPoints scored
3 saves made (GK only)2
4 tackles won2
60 completed passes2
2 shots on target2
Tier 2 ActionPoints scored
5+ saves made (GK only)3
5+ tackles won3
70+ completed passes3
3+ shots on target3

head over to our Premium Members Area to see which players will potentially benefit from the Sky Sports bonus on offer for saves, tackles, passes and shots on target.

HOW DO I PLAY AGAINST MY FRIENDS?

There are a number of different ways to compete against others in the Sky Sports game. You can create or join a Free League with your friends and colleagues but there are ways to win money too.

Sky Sports can actually administer your money league for you to avoid any awkwardness post-season. You can choose the entry fee (either £2, £5, £10 or £20 per person) and the prize structure beforehand and Sky Sports will take care of the rest.

We have already set up our annual, free-to-enter Fantasy Football Scout mini-league, which you can enter by heading to the ‘Leagues’ tab and clicking ‘Join+’.

    Evening,

Thoughts on spurs players in other words kane & son. They have a decent set of games and arguably both these players could do well over the first 6-7 weeks.

Question is can a mourinhio team.be trusted to do well in an attacking sense, I like many currently have son in my draft but the mourinhio factor bugs me.

Thoughts on a mourinhio spurs would be appreciated

Great fixtures on paper, currently have son but Ive dabbled with a couple of kane drafts. I should learn to avoid spurs as they are often slow starters but this season feels different due to a much shorter break, Mou is a concern but with the fixtures they haveave I expect goals

I guess we are in the similar place. I dont have confidence that a mourinhio team can put a few goals past any team unless your daft like Leicester and play a high line with slow defence.

I have Son but I'm interested in Alli @ 8m.

If pre-season indicates he's likely to start I may gamble on Alli and use the spare 1m elsewhere.

I dont see how Alli @ 8m is worth it going on the last season or so.

There are so many better options at the 8m mark

Out of curiosity, who do you prefer at 8m?

Logic for Alli is he's a second striker in a top 6 team with great fixtures. New(ish) manager, fresh start. Formerly 10 goals and 10 assists level player, and still young.

Would you be that surprised if he got started the season and got say, 3 goals 3 assists in his first 8 games?

at the 8m mark ziyec, pulisic, greenwood, foden havertz if he comes even pogba. We are spoilt for choice in midfield and at that mid price

I respectfully disagree. That 3rd midfielder slot is the one I'm struggling with the most:

Ziyech - prefer Werner, and don't want two new arrivals - especially when they're in the same team

Pulisic - currently injured, uncertain to start the season

Pogba and Greenwood - blank GW1. Greenwood at risk of new RW being signed

Foden - as above, and nowhere near nailed

Havertz - not even in the league yet

Imho the best one in that range is Madison - but I don't enjoy owning him in FPL. I'd like Pereira too, but not as 3rd mid.

    Cheeky RMT:

    Ryan

    TAA / Vinagre / KWP

    Salah / Auba / Son / Soucek

    Werner / Jimenez / Mitro
    ----
    Button / Ayling / Ferguson / Gordon

Template I know, but please can you point out the weaknesses as you see them?

    All responses much appreciated.

GK in a team that concedes too much.
Two so-so defenders. Vinagre might get competition signed.
      Soucek in starting 11.

i like ryan button though perfect set and forget. not keen on switching keepers as it s a recipe for missing the "hauls". who would you suggest for 4.5?

I didn't like any of the 4.5 options like McCarthy or Ryan, so I went for Ramsdale.
But I have to keep an eye on him and if Sheff U. remains as solid as last season.

Wouldn’t say nailed but seemed to play most games towards the end of the season. Not sure about a move so you know more than I do. I’m currently on ASM and Armstrong instead as I don’t want to risk either of them but not sure where you could find an extra 0.5? If I had to pick one at 5 I’d give Ritchie a go and look to upgrade if funds free up.

You've got me thinking. He is on pens. And as you say, they have much better fixtures.

Not sure I'll start with him but considering him a viable alternative now. Cheers!

Delayed reply but couldn't leave this on my conscience - as was looking into this today and realised that most of his points came from being a D last season so when you adjust for that and 1 less for the (2!) goals he really doesn't look as great anymore 🙁

Haha thanks for the reply 🙂

He did get those 2 goals and an assist in very limited minutes though. Over the course of a season it works out to about 6 goals and 3 assists.

Not great, but not terrible either.

That's actually equivalent to an attacking return every 4 games.

it's an assumption based on a very small sample. But worth considering imo, especially if he's on penalties.

Probably coming across as a bit obsessive now, but his history suggests he actually averages about 10 attacking returns per season. Sample size 3 and a third seasons

Seems to get at least one spell out of the team per year though, usually due to injury.

But 5mis the lowest his price has ever been in FPL (was 6m in first two seasons as a midfielder).

I think we've unearthed an underpriced gem here. Probably won't start with him but for me, he's a viable option at 5m

Maybe get a Sheff U in or Taylor?

To get Soucek to the bench requires major surgery, perhaps a formation change, unless you are keen to down grade three of your main guns in MF.

You could do that if you plan to move to a Man U player, but transfers might cost you points. Injuries can arrive.

I guess it comes down to your plan, I've dabbled with both of the above, intention with mane is to hit that great fixture at the start then have easy routes to kdb and Bruno etc. Son brings more balance though but will need an extra transfer if you plan on have a kdb+Bruno+Salah mid.

Mbappe for me. I think PSG might pull a surprise and tear apart Bayern's high line which has looked shaky at times. They are the only team that Bayern have faced so far that have electric attackers capable of running at their defense. I think Mbappe can get two. The question is, will Bayern be able to score more than PSG? I'm expecting a high scoring match.

Yep those are the ones - I'll likely have some cash to move Vinagre out too by GW3 if it all goes wrong in the meantime, and will have decent cover otherwise...

Alright - gambling on Saints, Wolves and Pool clean sheets in GW1 with defensive double ups. Quite happy with the plan and don’t want to have people talk me out of it. Just need another 4.5 gk so really hope Martinez is first choice for Arsenal...

I will adjust the Martinez plan but not sure how yet. Cheers for the vote of confidence. Very different strategy this year. Doubling up on defences and attacks I rate as soon as I see them.

decent....dare I say a bit template which is not the worst thing.

I believe alot of draft will end up similar as everyone will have the same spine.

City and utd missing the 1st week means its a little less headache picking the 1st team imo

Agreed. The opening fixtures aren't even great from an attacking standpoint so I prefer Vardy to Kane and don't care about Son. After GW4, sure. I can see Spurs keeping a CS in 6 of the first 8 fixtures so I've got the defensive double up in Lloris + Davies. Second Season Mourinho is legendary.

I personally like seeing different setups. Dull seeing so many in here that are so similar.

Who knows? Loads act as if they do. How many times have we seen so many get on a template and it doesn't pan out? Sticking to your guns is always more exciting. Rewarding when we chose wisely. Oh well if we didn't but the main thing is, we chose it.

All the best to you this season.

How many cs would you put Liverpool on before GW8?

That week is City Liverpool and after that Liverpool have a golden run - especially in defence.

Wondering about holding WC till GW9 to bring in power defence and running with more money up top before then.

I saw a considerable drop in defensive standards after lockdown.

3 clean sheets in 8 IMO

            Ty

That’s more or less where I’d put it I think. TAA etc aren’t just defenders of course but I am tempted to hold back

One of my first strategy ideas was just this - to WC into big defence. Part of the attraction is that it’s a touch cheaper when budget is bigger.

Not keen on budget 4.5s everywhere though

I'm doing exactly as you've proposed. Hold the WC and hit the fixture turn for the two best teams in the league. Until then, stick with TAA and invest up top.

I expect they'll concede to Chelsea. Aside from that, they can CS in any of the matches and all of the rest. They're a phenomenal team. 4/7 is my guess, I predict they'll concede to Leeds if Henderson does not play. But 6/7 is also a realistic scenario.

Reposting with corrections and now I have a moment to respond to the critics! 😀 Just for fun....

Dreamland for Arsenal fans if something like this happens. SO close but so far.

        Leno
        AMN+, Saliba, Gabriel, Tierney
        Ceballos, Partey
        Auba, Auour, Martinelli
        Lacazette

        Remaining squad: Martinez+, Macey+, Mari, Holding, Luiz, Chambers+, Cedric, Bellerin+, Xhaka/Torreira, Smith Rowe+, Saka+, Willian, Pepe, Nketiah+

Leaving: Iliev, Sokratis, Mustafi, Omole*, M. Dennis*, Bola, Kolasinac, Sheaf, Elneny, Guendouzi, Xhaka/Torreira

Loaned: Mavropanos, Medley, Ozil, Osei-Tutu, Mkhitaryan*, Nelson+, Willock+, [Balogun], John-Jules

Extensions from 2021 needed: Auba**, Balogun

New signings: Macey*, Luiz*, Mari*, Gabriel**, Ceballos (perm/loan), Auour (perm)/Coutinho (loan), Willian*

        * = done
        ** = nearly done
        + = homegrown

If no Auour, then keeping both Torreira and Xhaka will still work, promoting Ceballos to a more advanced role, potentially 🙂

Formation and preferences flexible based on opponents and your own biases. But the above approximation of Arsenal's state after a few more signings seems plausible and actually pretty exciting!

Cover in each position is solid:

        GK: Leno, Martinez, Macey
R(W)B: AMN, Bellerin, Cedric, Saka, Chambers
        L(W)B: Tierney, AMN, Saka
        RCB: Saliba, Holding, Chambers, Luiz
        LCB: Gabriel, Mari, Saliba, Tierney
        CCB: Luiz, Saliba, Gabriel
        DM: Partey, Chambers, (Xhaka), (Torreira)
CM: Partey, Ceballos, (Torreira), (Xhaka), Auour, AMN, Willian
CAM: Auour, Ceballos, Willian, Smith Rowe, AMN, Pepe
LM/F: Auba, Martinelli, Saka, Willian, Pepe
RM/F: Auba, Pepe, Willian, Saka, Martinelli
CF: Auba, Laca, Martinelli, Nketiah, Pepe

I thought AMN was being shopped (a decision I don't agree with). And wasn't Martinelli your first forward not too long ago, with Lacazette not in the first XI? What's changed?

The word on the street is that Arteta likes AMN, and didn't want him to be sold, but Raul Sanllehi was pushing the sale to raise funds. However, Sanllehi has just left the club, which could mean that AMN stays, but it's a wait-and-see.

Lacazette was replaced by Nketiah in the lead-up to the corona break. Something like that was coming for Lacazette as he wasn't having the best season, and fans were starting to get on his back. For me, his attitude was one of entitlement, throwing his arms up in the air, displaying an "I" perspective instead of a "we" perspective, as some people like to say. However, he's said all the right things in interviews and got the chance after the restart to reclaim the spot with Nketiah suspended, and played much better. It's a similar narrative with Ceballos, AMN and Xhaka. Arteta has given them a redemption route and they've take it. Not the same for Guendouzi, though.

Martinelli was looking great, mostly on the left with Saka as LB, but he's played in a two once or twice, up top, to good effect, tactically. He wasn't being played at all after restart, even as a sub, which baffled me tbh, but then got injured in training and will still be out for the rest of 2020.

Nope, as an arsenal fan I want Laca out. Not a title winning striker and simply don’t rate him despite his work ethic. I’d also take Emi over Leno

Yeah I have no issue with either of those things, but then we would need a Lacazette replacement. That would either be out of our price range, most likely, or it would mean promoting Nketiah, Martinelli or Balogun to lead striker prematurely. Yeah, everyone's saying Aubameyang should be the CF, but he's comfortable and highly effective where he is, and Lacazette gives another option, tactically, which no-one else gives. He's a good finisher too, which is not easy to come by. If there was a readymade replacement, I'd take it, but I'm trying to be realistic with my expectations here. We may not even get a DM or AM/10.

Yeah I get you, apart from the keeper you’ve nailed the realistic ideal team, doesn’t mean we’d be happy with it generally.

Well those defensive signings are as good as done. It's not dreaming. So there are defenders that need to be sold unless Arsenal are to haemorrhage wages at the back 😀 I'm only really taking about making 1 more signing (e.g. Partey), or maybe 2 (e.g. Auour). Decisions on existing Arsenal players simply need to be made.

          Should be this:

          Leno
          Bellerin Mari Gabriel Tierney
          Xhaka Partey*
          Pepe Auour* Willian
          Aubameyang

          Martinez
          Cedric Holding Saliba Kolasinac
          Willock Torreira
          Martinelli Ceballos Saka
          Nketiah

          Sign: Partey, Auour
Keep: Macey, Luiz (only for a season then get rid), AMN
Sell: Mustafi, Sokratis, Chambers, Guendouzi, Elneny, Ozil, Lacazette, Mkhi (next season after loan to Roma ends)
          Loan: Mavropanos, Nelson, Smith-Rowe

          Martinez
          AMN Gabriel Saliba Tierney
          Cabellos Partey
          Pepe Auour Saka
          Auba

        A. Jimenez + Justin / 343 or...
        B. Doherty + VVD / 442

        Thoughts? Rate /10

        McCarthy
        Trent • Vinagre • Justin • Ferguson
        Salah • Mane • Auba • Armstrong
        Werner • Mitrovic
        (Nyland / Gordon / Taylor / Brewster)
        0.5ITB to prevent unnecessary hits

3 heavy hitters in midfield means easy transfers to KDB/Sterling/Bruno. Can do Werner to Martial GW2 if it looks like he’ll need time to settle or to Vardy if he looks in form

Neymar to Muller on a FT?

In the version i play you get - 2 pts for a lost game wether or not you lose in a penalty shootout.

Hi guys. What do you make of this draft?
        McCarthy
        Trent, Vinagre, Justin, Dier,
        Salah, Son, Auba, ASM
        Werner, Mitrovic

        Nyland, Ferguson, Davis, Greenwood

Looks very good Will - lots of firepower there & good fixtures for your cheaper defenders

I see Greenwood on the bench - that’s a nice move - Are you planning to hop onto any other Man Utd or Man City players after GW1, or just observe them first to see how they do?

Dier is an interesting pick, particularly if he managed a little OOP action in the early weeks

Thanks very much. I am unsure about benching Greenwood. He may become Ziyech but just don’t know if going into the first gameweek with two unproven players in this league is worthwhile. The reasoning behind Dier is that spurs have good fixtures from a defensive standpoint and we know how Mourinho sets out his teams!!

Greenwood should hopefully be a bit of fun to own this season - he has pretty high upside & value prospects all things considered

Hopefully his game starts to come together now as he gets more & more bedded into the first team setup

Need to keep an eye on any incoming RWF’s Utd might sign thouh as that puts his minutes in a bit of doubt again, but as things stand he should be nailed & close to OOP

Saw someone earlier pointing out Mourinho’s second season syndrome should really elevate Spurs this year - will be interesting to see can he carve out another successful second after all the others...

              Good luck!

UEFA Champions League Fantasy - am I crazy to go with Mueller over Mbappe?
I just don't want 2 of 3 Fwds to be PSG.
