Son takes advantage of Kane absence to brace in Spurs’ pre-season opener

Three Premier League teams got their pre-season campaigns underway over the weekend.

Everton, Liverpool and Spurs were the clubs in action – and we’ve got all the information you need to know as you prepare for the 2020/21 edition of Fantasy Premier League.

As ever, we are tracking the minutes played by every single Fantasy asset during the pre-season friendlies as well as their goals and assists.

This methodical process helped us discover Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.5m) and John Lundstram (£5.5m) before they were everybody’s favourite £4.0m defender, so ensure you use our pre-season resources to the full…

SPURS 3-0 IPSWICH

  • Goals: Ryan Sessegnon (£5.0m), Son Heung-min x2 (£9.0m)
  • Assists: Dele Alli x2 (£8.0m), Juan Foyth (£4.5m)

Son Heung-min (£9.0m) has had the Fantasy community discussing his credentials for the new season after scoring a brace in Spurs’ routine 3-0 win over Ipswich Town.

However, we do have to consider that both of his goals netted in his 45-minute outing were came from a centre-forward position.

With Harry Kane (£10.5m) still in quarantine following his trip to the Bahamas, Son was able to lead the Spurs attack, picking up where he left off the last time he was asked to deputise for the Englishman.

Whether he will get to play in that position at the start of the season, when Spurs have a favourable run of games, does seem unlikely, considering Kane is expected to come straight back into the side after his isolation is over.

There was not much surprise to see Toby Alderweireld (£5.5m) as one of three players to register 90 minutes against Ipswich, but it is certainly interesting to see Ryan Sessegnon (£5.0m) as one of the others.

Classified as a £5.0m defender for 2020/21, the former Fulham man spent the whole game on the left flank of the attacking midfield trio, scoring the first goal of the game.

Admittedly, there was no Erik Lamela (£6.0m) or Steven Bergwijn (£7.5m) involved for Spurs over the weekend but it will be worth watching how often Sessegnon is used in pre-season.

Also of note was the fact that Gedson Fernandes (£5.0m) staffed the right-back position for the entire game as well.

After a disappointing end to last season, Dele Alli (£8.0m) played 74 minutes against Ipswich providing two assists from the number 10 role, although Giovani Lo Celso (£7.0m) was not in the match squad.

Spurs are next in action against Reading on Friday.

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Lloris (Hart 46′ (Gazzaniga 74′)); B Davies (Cirkin 46′), Alderweireld, Foyth (Carter-Vickers 46′), G Fernandes; Højbjerg (White 64′), Winks (Devine 71′); Sessegnon, Alli (Bowden 74′), Moura (Scarlett 71′); Son (Clarke 46′).

BLACKPOOL 3-3 EVERTON

  • Goals: Gylfi Sigurdsson x2 (£7.0m), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.0m)
  • Assists: Sigurdsson, Calvert-Lewin, Theo Walcott (£6.0m)

Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.0m) was the key man as Everton drew 3-3 with Blackpool at Bloomfield Road.

Operating in a central role for 76 minutes of the Toffees’ first pre-season match, the Icelandic international got himself an assist and two goals, the latter coming from an excellent direct free-kick on the edge of the box, won by Theo Walcott (£6.0m).

Tom Davies (£5.5m) was the only Everton player to stay on the pitch for 90 minutes, while Sigurdsson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.0m) each lasted 76.

The centre-forward also had a productive afternoon, adding a goal and an assist.

Mason Holgate (£5.0m), Lucas Digne (£6.0m), Anthony Gordon (£4.5m) and Alex Iwobi (£6.0m) all started the match too, brought off in the 62nd minute.

Those hoping to see Jarrad Branthwaite (£4.0m) claim a starting berth at Everton this season might be slightly discouraged by his outing on Saturday.

He started this match alongside Holgate but at half-time, Everton had conceded three goals to League One opposition.

Michael Keane (£5.0m) replaced Branthwaite at the interval, with Seamus Coleman (£5.0m) coming on Jonjoe Kenny (£4.5m) and Jordan Pickford (£5.0m) replaced by Jonas Lössl (£4.5m).

Obviously, there is only so much we can read into this match, and there are two more pre-season friendlies for Everton to play, but it is certainly interesting that Pickford was beaten three times by lower league opposition in the first half at Bloomfield Road while Lössl came on and kept a clean sheet in his 45-minute outing.

Richarlison (£8.0m) and Bernard (£6.0m) missed this match as they have not yet returned to training while Yerry Mina‘s (£5.5m) level of fitness is still not enough to be involved in pre-season matches.

Everton XI (4-4-2): Pickford (Lössl 46′); Digne (Nkounkou 62′), Branthwaite (Keane 46′), Holgate (Gibson 62′), Kenny (Coleman 46′); Iwobi (Bešić 62′), Sigurdsson (John 76′), Davies, Gordon (Bolasie 62′); Calvert-Lewin (Simms 76′), Kean (Walcott 46′).

STUTTGART 0-3 LIVERPOOL

  • Goals: Roberto Firmino (£9.5m), Naby Keïta (£5.5m), Rhian Brewster (£4.5m)
  • Assists: Curtis Jones (£4.5m), Firmino, James Milner (£5.5m)

Jurgen Klopp named two teams for Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Stuttgart in Austria, one used in each half.

Of the two, it was the one used in the opening period that was clearly the first-team, featuring Mohamed Salah (£12.0m), Sadio Mané (£12.0m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) in the front three, the latter grabbing himself a goal and assist in 45 minutes.

Naby Keïta (£5.5m) also scored, operating as part of a central-midfield trio with Fabinho (£5.5m) and Curtis Jones (£4.5m), who assisted Firmino’s opener.

The back-four was mostly as expected, although Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) was not involved in light of a recent minor injury.

While the right-back was not fit enough to travel for the Reds’ first two pre-season matches, the Liverpool Echo are reporting that he has been given his own “bespoke fitness regime” as he aims to be ready by the end of the month.

As a result, the chances of the Alexander-Arnold’s involvement in the Community Shield final later this week are not threatened by this minor injury. The same applies to Harry Wilson (£5.5m) who also missed the last-minute trip to Austria.

That made for a 45-spell in the first-team for Neco Williams (£4.0m) at right-back against Stuttgart, with Andrew Robertson  (£7.0m) on the left of Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) and Joe Gomez (£5.5m) and taking some indirect free-kicks.

The second-half team was very much made up of second-string players, fronted by Harvey Elliott (£4.5m), Takumi Minamino (£6.5m) and Rhian Brewster (£4.5m), who scored the only goal after the break, assisted by James Milner (£5.5m).

There was a debut for Konstantinos Tsimikas (£5.0m) at left-back and, while he impressed Klopp, it does sound as if his integration into the team will take some time. If Robertson does require minute-management or is injured in the early part of the campaign, it is more likely that Williams will stand in until Tsimikas is up to speed.

“Good, good. (Tsimikas) is a pretty quick player and pretty confident, how you will hear in his [post-match] interview, but he is a good player – a really good player – and he did well. The next challenge for him is now to get used to our defending and things. It will take time, no doubt, but when he has the ball it looks not so bad.” – Jurgen Klopp

It was against Liverpool’s weaker team that Stuttgart offered more threat but Adrián (£4.5m) stood up to chances that fell to Philipp Klement and Tanguy Coulibaly.

First-half team: Alisson, Williams, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Keita, Jones, Mane, Salah, Firmino.

Second-half team: Adrian, Hoever, Phillips, Van den Berg (Koumetio 68′), Tsimikas, Wijnaldum, Milner, Grujic, Elliott, Minamino, Brewster.

Steer would be my choice over Nyland. He is second choice after Heaton I think? Nyland played because Steer was injured and was poor.

Any love for Calvert-Lewin as an alternative, probably in a 442 alongside Werner?

Finding the forwards up to 6.5m a bit uninspiring, and the jump up to the likes of Jimenez and Ings means losing my fund for Son > Fernandes.

I guess Mitro is the sensible option with some reasonable fixtures. Not feeling Wood/Burnley this year.

    Hello guys,

Do you know if it's possible to download the FDR for the 2020/21 season from the Official FPL website (PDF format), similar to what we could do in previous season?

    Cheers!

Nice article David. Son looking like value for me over Kane. September is going to be a crazy busy month for Kane, what with Nations League, potentially Europa League qualifiers, Carabao Cap and the League. I don't want to take the risk with his fitness and another injury.

Doubt Kane would play in the Carabao cup or Europa league qualifiers. If anything Son might be more likely to play them as a striker alongside Moura.

Why would he do that? You do not want your 4th mid to be a 5.5 or lower cheapie. Very hard to move from it and you get stuck week in week out with a player mostly scoring 2 pointers

Because everytime pool keep a clean sheet (which will inevitably be often), it will be a red arrow because of TAA ownership.

There are some promising options at 5.5 - ASM/Armstrong, arguably even Soucek at 5.0.

Of course it’s a double edged sword because when Pool do do concede you lose out.
But they’re attacking threat (VVD for goals/BAPs and Robbo assists) means I think it is worth it.

Disagree - every time I did the defensive double up with Pool last season it ended up being a very expensive fail. The midfield is where the investment needs to be prioritised this season, his defence looks fine with TAA & Doherty as the big hitters.

Sounds like Kean isn't giving any competition to DCL, who I still believe has a lot to give as a FPL asset. Signings of Dalot and Allan could make a significant difference to this Everton team.

I'm confident Son will be an excellent option, well worth the bargain 9.0 price. I also don't think that Kane is worth 1.5 points more than him, though I believe Kane is the better option overall. However at Son's price I prefer Ziyech at 1M cheaper and I am not getting both. Kane is also at a convenient price point (Agueroooo) and a more reliable captain than Son, who has a tendency to spend games holding hands with the touchline. That GW5-8 run of West Ham (H), Burnley (A), Brighton (H), and West Brom (A) is excellent and I suspect Kane will be handed the armband 3/4 times.

People expecting Spurs vs Everton to be a blowout will be mistaken, imo. I expect it'll be like the match after the restart - cagey, defensive, focus on the counter from two pragmatic world class managers. 1-0, 2-0 Spurs is my very early guess.

I dont think Chelsea bought a 50m striker to have him sit bench for Giroud or Tammy

I assume with Pulisic out it will be a front 3 of Ziyech Werner and Mount, I have no idea though. Not a Chelsea fan, just dont see their big new signing sitting bench

Prob best XI will be something like this with Havertz playing a little deeper

              GK
              Azpi/James Rudiger/Zouma Silva Chilwell
              Kovacic/Mount Kante Havertz

He might be eased in though. We have 0 idea what could happen. What's worse, is that Germany have Nations League right before. I really think he might not start GW1...

With all the news (and there's so much of it) on Chelsea business in this transfer window, I thought I'd share my thoughts and educated guess and predictions with you lot on how Frank Lampard would setup this new Chelsea side.

A few pointers on Lampard first.

          - Lampard has played many formations this season, 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3, 3-4-3, 4-1-4-1 etc.

          - He has never fielded 2 strikers together in the same lineup last season. Although this could change with Werner equally adept to playing as an inside Left Forward (similar to Mane/Sterling etc.)

          - Lampard has mostly used 3-4-3 in games where the opposition also plays the same lineup, or where he needs stability and an additional defender.

          - It's important to note that Lampard decided to play 4-3-3 in the Super Cup and against Manchester United in his first two games in charge. He only shifted to 3-4-3 later in games after Chelsea's defence was getting ripped open. Although the Liverpool Super cup game had a lot of positives. I personally think 4 man defence would be what he'd be aiming for right now.

How I think we will lineup with every player fit.

          (4-2-3-1)

          Caballero*

          James Thiago Silva Rudiger* Chilwell

          Kovacic Kante/Jorginho

          Ziyech Havertz Pulisic

          Werner

There could be a lot of rotation since the season will have 1 less month than usual and games coming in every 3-4 days for sides playing in Europe for months.

          Set Pieces

Ziyech will be on corners imo. Mount on them after Ziyech if on field. Pulisic only took 4 corners all season, he's an option but last resort maybe.

          Penalties

Jorginho has been the preferred penalty taker when on field. Willian was next in line. Now that Willian has left for Arsenal, my best guess would be Werner. He has taken a career total of 16 penalties for Leipzig, scoring 13 and missing 3. He took 5 penalties last season, scoring all of them.

Kai Havertz is also an option, who has taken 13 penalties, scoring every single one of them. He took 4 penalties for Leverkusen last season.

Personally, I think Werner is still the go-to option at 9.5m. The Atletic earlier reported that Werner has been told he will be played as the center forward at Chelsea.

Havertz's price is important here though, if he comes in at 8.5 or less, he could be in for a really strong shout. Especially if Lampard gives him the penalty duties seeing he's never missed one in his senior career. A total of 29 goals and 9 assists in the last 2 season in league alone is very good for a player of his age, although these goals were scored in the Bundesliga where we see a lot more goals than in other leagues.

In a nutshell. It's Werner > Havertz and Pulisic > Ziyech for me for FPL.

As for the defence, the signing for Thiago Silva could be a very shrewd one imo. With all the funds being tied up in other signings, Chelsea needed to sort the defence with low investments (until they sell more players) and Thiago Silva on a free is an upgrade on any Center Backs Chelsea has, even at the age of 35 right now.

Silva, if signed, would play on the Right side of the CB pairing. Assuming he nails his spot for the start at least, he'd be partnered by Rudiger/Zouma, since Christensen only plays RCB and Tomori is rumoured to be going out on loan.

Azpilicueta will still see a lot of gametime imo, but he will be phased out since the long term full back partnership seems to be Chilwell/James.

Lampard could further use 3-4-3 where he could play any 3 of the front 4 in any combination. But I am thinking/hoping it will be used to a much lesser degree this season.

Only just realised after writing that this has been a really long post, but I wanted to give you much more than just FPL picks to base your decisions around Chelsea.

Thank you if you made it this far and apologies for a really long post.

          Any further inputs always welcome

            One thing I missed out.

It's strongly rumoured that Chelsea will sign a Goalkeeper in this window and also, if we sell a Center back, aother one could be coming in. Hence the Asterisk on Caballero and Rudiger.

All very good points but just one thing to note about Havertz is that a considerable amount of his goals and assists came when he was playing CF as opposed to AM or other positions in midfield.

Great post, thanks! I've gone just for Werner at present, think he starts from gw1 or eased in?

I see you put Havertz after Werner, what price is this assuming he is, 8.5?

How many of these are you going with from the outset?

I think Werner will definitely start in GW1. He has been training since after the Wolves game in GW38 (end of July), same as Ziyech.

I'm assuming Havertz will come in at 8.5, yeah.

At this moment, I have ZIyech and Werner, although I'd easily pay 0.5 more for Havertz if the price is indeed 8.5 over Ziyech.

I feel it's more likely Havertz partners Mount/Kova as a free eight in the 4-3-3. Lampard's experiments after the break seem to indicate that's his optimal formation, and it seems like he wants to replicate City and Pool's attacking play and pressing respectively.

Indeed, the 4-2-3-1 mentioned above could easily be a 4-1-4-1 with the same players too.

Kovacic has been out best player this season and I think it will be very difficult to drop him, he is very important to how we play. Even in a 4-1-4-1, I'd think it'd be Kovacic and Havertz with Mount getting a few games there.

Think you nailed everything there, not sure there's anything I'd disagree with!

Only couple of things I'd add:

            - Very much expect Zouma to start over Rudiger, given the difference in the quality of performances between them at the end of last season. However, form is temporary etc etc so a lot harder to call long term.
            - Kante should be comfortably ahead of Jorginho, he's dropped down a long long way recently
            - You'd have to be a brave man to call James vs Azpi, but do agree this has to be the season for James to really step up his minutes! Far to uncertain for me to want to buy James though, that's the point.

            Great stuff AK! 🙂

Yeah I can see where you're coming from with Rudiger and Zouma. My concern with Zouma is that he can only play in a low block defence. I think Lampard wants to be able to play a higher line of defence than what he did last season, since there was so much space in between the lines (Defensive line and Midfield line), and it was easy for players to get in between and run directly at the defenders with Chelsea midfield a bit behind.
Also, I've seen Zouma being linked to other clubs such as Tottenham and even PSG recently.

Kante is someone I want as well, but I do want to point out that in a 4-2-3-1, it was the double pivot of Jorginho and Kovacic that looked really good against deep blocks, since Jorginho's build up is one of the best out there. Kante against teams that have pace and pose a greater threat on the counter attack.

Obviously, it could be very different to what I think. So we'll have to watch this space.

              Cheers RAE. 🙂

Very much agree on kante, reports of his demise are definitely premature. Kante and Kova are going to play most games when fit. We need to offload Barkley..but that’s another matter.

I think it’s now or never for Zouma, Silva is a dream partner and he has to show the potential his athletic ability has always promised. Rüdiger is going to have Lamps trust based on experience and I think he and Silva are a great partnership in their own right, but we need Zouma to be the player we’ve seen glimpses of if we don’t want to get beat by the quicker counterattacking teams.

Big squads are needed these days. Willian and Pedro are gone replaced by Kai and Havartz basically. They are upgrades over Mount who is a good option off the bench. Werner is a massive upgrade over Tammy and Giroud and Giroud will be gone next summer anyways

I'm really excited about Chelsea this season, at the moment I'm on a triple up of Werner, Ziyech and Pulisic, injury permitting in Pulisic case. That's why Havertz at 8.5 or less could be great as he can just plug in for Puli until he's fit again.

He was just being brashly overpolite. Very rare in todays informal world

              Thank you Rumour Mill!

Chelsea's pre season schedule hasn't been released yet, but the squad has come back for their first training session for the pre-season today. Ziyech and Werner took part in it. The friendlies should be relased soon.

The one change I could see to these insights is that Azp could easily be slotted in at CB to partner Silva if Lamps decides to start James @RB; Azp is our captain and has typically outperformed all of our current CB's at their position when asked to play that position. As a very versatile, reliable and consistent performer who can play LB, RB & CB, I doubt Lamps will drop our captain from the starting 11 from the seasons start.

I've personally thought about it, but no manager has ever tried Azpi as a CB in a 4 man backline, certainly Frank hasn't. I don't see it changing this season either.

Agree, he will play a lot at RB until Reece ups his game, Reese Tammy and Mason will be making a lot of sub appearances this year

            Great post, cheers AK!

Do you think Abraham will want (or be allowed) to go on loan, not being first choice? He strikes me as the sort of player who wants to play every game.

No chance; he’s going to have to prove himself again, not just good enough for PL, but good enough to start in a world class team. Going to play cup games and be an impact sub imho

Great read! I think Lampard would ease in new players tho, so it might take a few Gameweeks to see the above lineup, esp Havertz as he is young and could take some time to get going in the PL. Lampard took some time to integrate Pulisic as well.
Also, I didn't see Mount mentioned as much. I think Lampard loves him and played him in the majority of CL and PL last season. So, Mount should be in the starting XI the first few gameweeks and then we have to see if someone else would be preferred.(Havertz/RLC/Barkely)

            Cheers, great post.

I had been set on Pulisic since the last season ended, however this widens my eyes as to the increased rotation risk, and that letting Chelsea's formation settle before selecting any players may be the dullard approach.

Who would you rather have for GW2 onwards?

          A) Rashford + Ziyech
          B) Fernandes + Maddison
