Fantasy Football Scout’s Mark and Az to co-host FPL BlackBox podcast in 2020/21

Two very familiar Fantasy Football Scout faces will be joining forces for a weekly podcast and YouTube video series this season.

Mark and Az will be co-hosting the latter’s popular FPL BlackBox podcast, which is relaunching for 2020/21 and which we are delighted to be partnered with.

Mark recently made a return to these pages and will be joining Az in a Pro Pundit capacity in the season to come, providing articles and video appearances throughout the campaign.

With 12 top 10,000 finishes between them, five of which were inside the top 1k, the pair certainly know their subject matter.

For the uninitiated, this is a podcast with a difference.

Each week, Az and Mark will look back on their decisions to reflect on what’s going right – and what’s going wrong.

The co-hosts will be analysing the mistakes they have made throughout the season, with the hope of learning from their errors to become better Fantasy Premier League managers.

There will also be assessments of other elite managers’ performances along the way, along with the usual chat on transfers and captains.

There is even the prospect of live Q&A sessions as the season progresses, too.

The first edition is anticipated to be out on September 3, with weekly shows to follow every Thursday evening.

Head over to the FPL BlackBox YouTube page to subscribe now and, while you’re at it, why not do the same with the Fantasy Football Scout channel.

Remember to take advantage of our pre-season Premium Membership offer in order to get unrestricted access to Az and Mark’s articles throughout the season to come.

We’ve recently added Hall of Fame number one Fabio Borges to our long list of contributors and there’ll be more exciting announcements to come in the next few days.

Only subscribers will be able to read everything from our elite team of pundits this season.

Full-year Premium Memberships cost just £17.50 until August 31st (the equivalent of less than £1.50 a month), with the price rising to £19.99 thereafter – so take advantage of that discount while you can.

Why don’t you like Salah long-term?

My thoughts on him -Proven top scorer and Liverpool (along with Man City) provided a fair amount more points as a team than the rest of the premiership.

Man Utd on the other hand were running out of steam towards end of last season and haven’t had the same rest as Liverpool (who pretty much took a break after winning the league). Bruno also had less xG (without penalties) than rashford. Appreciate Man U have strong front 3 who draw penalties, but surely they can’t get as many next year as they did this.

          All about fixtures mate 🙂
Don't want to be stuck with him for Chelsea Arsenal Villa Everton games. 3 away games. Only home game is arsenal who are Decent now. Surely I'm not going to © him.

Also helps me waiting for 2/3 gw's to make important calls in Greenwood/Martial/Pulisc/Werner etc ..... That's the plan. Let's see how it goes

This^ Last season he was almost essential in home games and good C option. Yet, if he is in form, eye test will tell it. So I won't start without him with plum fixture when his EO is 150% and he is best C option. Hattie and passing the eye test and I will keep him. Poor performance and out he goes and I use the money elsewhere. Unless injured, Auba for two first weeks.

Makes sense - especially waiting a few gameweeks on Chelsea / Man U. I’m excited about Chelsea, but a few gameweeks would be great to see how this new team works. A lot of new players to bed in and not much pre-season to do it.

I need to look into Liverpool / Salah away vs home. Chelsea, Everton, Villa defence don’t scare me as fixtures though

I see a lot of teams with a McCarthy Nyland 8.5 keeper combo.

I was one of those teams, but I switched to a Ryan Button 8.5 combo and here's my reasoning.

    1. Nyland being first choice isn't obvious. The manager has preferred Steer in the past, so there's a risk of picking a non-playing Villa keeper.

    2. Even if we knew which to pick between Nyland and Steer, it would be a short term option, given that Heaton will be first choice again by GW5 or GW6 unless Nyland or Steer show Neuer levels of form in the intervening gameweeks.

I see your reasoning, but I think there is a risk of overthinking sub GKs.

I think I will just play McCarthy because I think Southampton will get more CS's than Brighton in the medium term. In the unlikely event that McCarthy gets injured/dropped/suspended, I'll just use a transfer to change it up. I can see why people would pick Ryan/Button if they thought it was literally a toss of a coin, 50:50 type decision about if Ryan or McCarthy would get more points.

    5. Klaren
      • 6 Years
      3 years, 7 months ago

People choose Nyland because he and Steer are the only 4.0 keepers who might play but not necessarily because he’ll play. Just think of it as a fodder.

I don’t care much for getting the backup keeper for my first GK as GK injuries/suspensions are very rare.

We Chelsea fans have some very exciting times ahead of us. Bringing Lampard as a coach may turn out to have more positive effect than just him having good coaching skills:

    1. There will be no quick fire release for Lampard as for other Chelsea managers. He is in good personal terms with Abramovich and he is smart enough to accept the job only if owner promises him "couple of years for developing the project", something like how Klopp started at Liverpool. A luxury which Sarri and others could not have, because they were "just managers" to Roman. Lampard is not.

    2. Invaluable effect on transfer market. Players like Havertz, Ziyech, Werner are not coming just to play for Chelsea, they are coming to play under Lampard, whom they idolised as a teenagers not so far ago (not my guess, all of them said exactly that in their first interviews at Chelsea).

    3. Too early to judge, but he may well turn out to be a really great and succesful coach in the future

    1. R.C
      • 6 Years

      1. I think roman may be thinking he owes Lampard for last season (not being able to sign players and get the champs league) so owes him a decent window.
      2. Don’t think this at all, more like the money is good and it’s another step in the career direction.
      3. Could be but so would I if I was spending about £250mill on players this window

    3. Collie01

I think there is some truth in this. I also think that in a strange way, the transfer ban may have come at the right time for Chelsea. No pressure on Frank going into the job, he gets praised for bringing through academy players such as Mount. Now that the transfer ban is over, they have huge money to spend when lots of other clubs are tightening belts due to Covid-related loss of revenue. So little or no competition for great prospects such as Werner and Havertz.

I think what will really be the making or breaking of Lampard and Chelsea though will be their defense. It needs a big overhaul and Pep and Man City have shown that throwing money at defenders does not necessarily solve defensive problems.

lol what did you expect them to say in their first interviews?

"Fat Face Frank ate all the pies and is an unproven manager at the top tier. But I'm very happy to have signed a 200k a week contract."

      1. Silecro
        • 6 Years

well i dont recall hudson odoi saying "it was always my dream to play under Sarri." The point is that some of those new players genuinely want to play for the Lampard because of him, not because of Chelsea as a club or money which they could also get elsewhere. What I want to say is that Lampard can make deals happen just with his name, which others could not.
Hell, Gimenez from Atletico also praised Lampard and he is not even a chelsea player

Fair enough. I always take those type of comments from players with a pinch of salt.
It's not as if they will play above their capabilities just because they admired the manager when he was a player.

I like Frank but he blotted his copybook with that childish outburst Vs Liverpool. And his apology wasn't an apology, it was one of those politician type apologies - I regret if anyone was offended, rather than I'm sorry.

Don't think that your #1 is necessarily true...
      Roman, well, likes Russian Roulette!

If Chelsea fail to add any silverware this season, I don't think Frank will get to keep his job. Roman kicked out Mou too who Roman valued highly.

For your #2, I'd take those interviews with a pinch of salt. You can't expect an incoming player to not praise his new club, manager of team members?! I think its more that they are coming for the lure of PL than only FL.

which team would you like by gw 3 this is if all goes well

    team 1
leaves 0.5 itb to upgrade to a 4.5 so ive two rotating 4.5s
    mccarthy
    taa, doherty, justin
    salah, kdb, greenwood, son, soucek
    werner, mitro

subs- button, ferguson, 4 mill davis

    or
    team 2
    0.0 itb
    mccarthy
    taa, vinagre, justin
    salah, kdb, bruno, ziyech, soucek

In short both could be good, but hard to tell until we’ve seen some games. I would try to find a team structure of price points that allow either of these as a possibility - who knows Ziyech might have a flying start or Greenwood starts scoring for fun or Bruno gets injured...

I know this is weak in the middle but thinking TAA and doherty are like mids. Have money in Kane and auba to upgrade others to utd/city/Chelsea.
    Any thoughts?

Midfield a bit weak for me, but presuming you play a 4-4-2 it could work. I think the issue for me is if Armstrong and Soucek aren’t playing well of Gordon doesn’t start you’re going to find it hard to get away from them and are committing to playing probably both Armstrong and Soucek every week. This means if you’re big hitters don’t fire you could see some very low scores. Spread the funds around a bit imo.

You can tell that Leeds is a promoted side overrated etc... But if -and I say if because it's not sure- but IF they sign Rodrigo from Valencia then all those 5.5 mids will be absolute FPL gems and if this guy up front costs 7.0m or less he is gonna be in my team from the start.

True but tip only for you: don't go for Dallas. He won't play mid and there is where he gets his attacking returns. Ayling will surely be more of a threat imo, unless he plays at the back if they don't sign a CB as you said.

If they don’t sign a CB soon, Ayling is likely to play CB, Douglas LB and Dallas RB. And Dallas RB stats are better than Ayling CB stats last season.

I’ll WC early though so I only care about short term. I appreciate Ayling can become a better option playing RB later in the season.

    Hey, thoughts on this draft?

    McCarthy (Button)
    TAA Justin Dier (Vinagre, Ferguson)
    Salah Aubameyang Ziyech Armstrong (Leko)
    Werner Mitrovic Jimenez

Quite dependent on the Chelsea attack, but I believe they will start well. Saints seem to be on the up since the backend of last season, as Armstrong seems a better pick than ASM (his fixtures are better too). I considered Spurs assets but Mourhinos style is just too defensive for my liking, which is also the reason I'm considering Dier at 5.0. Very thankful for any feedback : )

I don't have Aubameyang in my current draft. Am I crazy?

Auba has two great fixtures. But, he's really expensive and I don't plan to captain him in the first two games (Salah then Fernandes). In GW3 I'm gonna get rid for sure because he starts a brutal run of games.

    Pros to Auba
    - Good shield
    - Two strong fixtures
    - Cash cow in GW3

    Cons to Auba
    - Super expensive
    - Forces a transfer in GW3
    - Could leave money on the floor after the above transfer

Not keen really - an awful lot rides on Chelsea there. Fixture couldn't be worse week 2 bar being at Anfield. Can see Brighton being a handful away on day 1 too.

Believe in Chelsea and it's winner though 🙂

You're too caught up with forward planning. Just pick him if you think he will do well. How do you know it will be a forced transfer, what if he double digits both GWs?
Even mentioning shields in GW1 smacks of conservative play.

I would think you of all people would be in favor of it. Auba + Armstrong vs Ziyech + Son. I think the latter does better. They have better fixtures, they have higher potential.

I would get rid of Auba even if he got double digits in both the first games with those fixtures and other emerging options.

Is he super expensive though? If he had been classed as mid the last 2 years, he would have scored approx 235-240pts each of the last 2 seasons. Obviously he isn't cheap, but I think he's quite fairly priced.

Anyway. In answer to your question, I don't think it's crazy to go Auba-less, however I think it's a sizeable risk considering some of his obvious replacements (Sterling, KdB, Bruno) won't play GW1. Having either of those 3 benched in GW1 seems a real waste and it would be painful if Auba hauled. Also, presuming you want to get the likes of KdB and Bruno in GW2/3, you will need to use transfers anyway and it won't be easy to get any of them without using 2 transfers, unless you want to sell Salah/Mane.

Not that brutal. He scored 2 goals against City in the FA Cup, and though he didn't score the goals against Liverpool, his team scored 2 goals in their victory over Liverpool in the league.

I've had drafts with both. It's doable. I think this might be preferable though. Is Aubameyang really worth 3.0m more than Son at the start of the season with their respective fixtures? Really struggling to justify it...

I have been following your comments Camzy and thank you for sharing. It's much appreciated. I've had Werner and Ziyech in my GW1 draft since FPL opened and you've gone around in a big circle to get there. 😉

I totally understand your reasoning and logic on multiple drafts. It's sound. I'm slowly condensing down to:

          - Aubamayang? (Unwanted cash cow, binned after 2GWs who's trolled us both.)

          - Son? (Hmm... He's another troll for me. I just don't see the value with Kane fit.)

          - No MCI until GW10? (I'm really not sure about this and without the Auba cash cow I think I'll be struggling without WCing.)

So basically, I still don't know what I'm gonna do but I thank you for sharing your thoughts and wisdom. Thank you. 😎

Rotation pairings, if anyone was looking for it.

    ARS -TOT
    AVL-CRY
    BHA-LEE
    CHE-FUL
    LEI-BUR
    LIV-EVE
    MCI-MUN
    SHU-SOU
    WHU-NEW
    WOL-WBA

    SHU-SOU & LEI-BUR stand out for me.

Palace & villa works fine too.

IF shaw doesn't get fit in time & Vinagre is out of favour I'm thinking about Targett Ferguson as pair.

Palace just have too many first team players out right now and not sure most of them will make it for the start. Plus, they don't have much of a threat going forward so pretty much sit in their half for most of the matches. Can see them really struggling this year. For Villa, they did tighten up after lockdown but really don't trust them defensively.

Palace aren't about players. They're about RH system 🙂

Hearing an echo of myself there but it's horribly close to the limit right now and early fixtures are tough

Interesting bit is Palace fixtures are absolute gold around 5 on and that's when we should have at least one first choice Cb back

Home and away I take it.

I'm think I'm going to look for non top 6 pairings if I go that way. Most interesting one I see there is SU and SOU

Not looking at my side currently

Still pondering main strategy decision in first few weeks. Thinking my logically perfect set up is a bit too logically perfect and may not be so perfect when I can't make the moves I want to 😉

Understand Brighton Wolves is dynamite for avoiding anything at all for several weeks. That would put me on Ryan though as Potter can't be trusted with anyone else. Don't suppose Vinagre starts either

Possibly Jimenez, just. As in 51-49% in my mind!

      - Wolves probably a better team and will likely win more matches.
      - Jimi on pens. Not sure Ings will be, and he isn't a very good pen taker anyway.
      - Jimi has form over last 2 seasons. In back of my mind, I'm wondering if Ings overachieved last season? Jimi has no Europe to worry about this year either.

Both look decent options and both tempting at the price.

      I'm now on Jiminez.

One consideration is that Ings has got plenty of potential alternatives in Armstrong, Adams, even JWP

Jiminez or nothing atm in midifield terms, though one of Jota/Podence could emerge

    Top Button draft:

    McCarthy Button
    TAA Bellerin Ferguson Mitchell Lamptey
    Salah Auba Son Ziyech Keita
    Werner Mitro Davis/Brewster

No thumbs up for a draft with no Wolves defense. Pretty much mandatory imo considering their opening fixtures.
